There's a picture of two guys working together, each standing on the end of a plank. One is standing on the steel beam side of the plank, the other is standing cantelevered out over NOTHING bucking a rivet. If his buddy moves he's falling, of course neither has a harness on.

Hate to differ, but the Empire State Building took some time to construct, and the erection (sorry!) took place mostly while the "Roaring '20s" were still roaring.

The Chrysler Building was completed in 1928, the Empire State in 1930.

The stock market crashed in late-1929. The "height" (or deepest pit) of the Great Depression was 1933.

Anyway, I think your point was still a good one.

Anyone else notice the coupe in the center with a "bed" and the trunk lid removed?

I understand from steelworkers that you can work for 20 years @ heights and then one day just freeze so that others have to pry your hands loose from the steel so they can get you down.

I have to correct myself on a date, sorry. One source says the Empire State was oficially opened May 1931, not 1930.

The building and property cost nearly $25 million. And depending on your source from five to 14 lives were officially lost, though insiders in the construction industry said it cost about one life per floor.

But I think we all agree that guys working the high iron had balls of steel!

Yup, you're right.
I just double checked and it was started in 1930 and took just over one year to build.
That's all, one year. I can't even imagine.
