need to know how to identify a turbo 400 tranny ASAP

    Going to buy a used turbo 400 tranny tomorrow but need to know how to identify one so that i know what i am getting.

  3. Easy way to tell is that a turbo400 has the vacuum modulator on the side, and a turbo350 has it on the rear. Turbo400 also has the electric plug for the electric kickdown, whereas a turbo350 has a cable for mechanical kickdown. The pan shape is also very different.

    might also want to know the difference between Chevy and other GM models,

    and long or short shaft and...

    ..slip yoke or bolted?.. or are all the output shafts drilled and tapped?

    car pan (shallow), truck pan (deep)..

    Another quick difference is the tailhousing..
    The 400 has a bolt on tail housing, i think 5 or six bolts around the perimeter, can't remember right now..
    The 350 dosn't bolt on at all, it's cast into the housing..
    And like stated before, no kickdown cable on a 400.
     
  8. it also will have an alum tag riveted on the right side that says GM Turbo hydramatic 400. [​IMG]
