Karl and Veda Orr represent the first family of hot rodding. In 1940, Karl opened up what many to believe to be the first speed shop in Southern California. He built engines, sold heads, cams, carbs, you name it... And his business thrived well into ...

To read the rest of this blog entry from The Jalopy Journal, click here.
I wonder what Karl & Veda's family holds as far as treasures of Hot Roddings past. Anyone know if they had kids???
A little late history. When I was a high school kid in 1968 - 1970 Karl had moved the business (semi retirement) to Mint canyon, which was out on the original road they all took to the lakes (old Sierra Highway out beyond Tips restaurant.) I lived in Sand Canyon and went to Canyon High school, and we took that route home very often. We stopped in to the speed shop dozens of times to oogle the vintage goodies. It was a store front about the same size as the original in the picture. We were just penniless high school kids at the time and really had no idea who Karl Orr was, (the old man behind the counter) or his significance. Too bad as I was building a banger in the garage, Weiand finned head, Engle cam, single 97, Edelbrock balanced, lightened flywheel and Karl would have been wonderful to run all that by. In 1970 I was the only kid on earth messing with Model A's. That was definitely un-cool in that time frame. '55 Chevy's were cool. Does anyone else remember the Mint Canyon store. It was east of Newhall - Saugus. Anyone got a picture?
I love this kinda stuff...I used to hang around a place in Fort Wayne called B & B Speed Shop and then cruise my lemon peeler over to my uncle's bodyshop and get in the way there too...first paycheck (2 bux an hour working at the carwash after school) after I bought my 54 belair in high school was spent at B & B
Some Pics I thought I'd share from the 75th show. The one with Veda standing next to it was a recreation. The other was supposed to actually be her car but there was some question to it's authenticity.
There's a guy here in Orange County who has several of the original trophies.I believe there were 20 or so and the collection was for sale a few years ago.
Hey Ryan... I'll contact the guy who has them and see if he'll allow me to share the story of how they were found. I think so, and I'll let you know. Glad you were interested in the story. When I found the trophies, I thought others would enjoy too. Best.. Geoff
Some more pics of the Orr roadster. I don't recall where I got this first pic and I can't verify the info typed in the border.
Great pics and story. Karl and Veda are two of my heroes and being members of Albata doesn't help! I want to clone the Warth/Orr modified, so cool. In regards to Karl having the first speed shop, that isn't true. Karl did have one of the earlier shops. Jim White (Harrell) opened his shop in '32 (Bell Auto parts started earlier I believe). Jim advertised in Muroc Timing programs and either used "Jim's Speed Shop" or "Jim's Auto Parts" he specialised in Chev 4s and banger speed equipment. Jim was a member of Albata along side Karl and Veda. Jim & Karl were of similar age.
I too used to stop by in my Deuce coupe to visit Carl, I also had no idea of his history, he was just a neat old guy that could build a flathead like nobody! He once asked me to stay inside the shop while he went out front, when he called me out he asked me if I could tell whether or not the motor in his '49 truck was running? or not?... I couldn't tell (even by putting my hand on the hood) he opened her up and sure enough it WAS running! He sure new his stuff!!
I was showing my daughter the photo of Veda and the 32 roadster a few years ago and she was so taken with name that when her daughter was born she named her Veda... People always comment on the unusual name,,but ol' graybeard hotrods always get the connection. I have posted many times in the want ads looking for a Veda hubcap,,,no luck yet.
