Thumbs up What car first got you excited about customs or rods as a kid?

I've searched, and found nothing, so I'm asking the masses - What car do you remember as being your first inspiration about customs OR rods? How old were you? What was it about that car that really grabbed you?

I wish I had some pics! My bro-in-law's '56 Chevy BelAir hardtop was the car for me, in 1971. He had the car painted two-tone blue, with Marana pearl added for that color-change-at-any view look, and with the cobwebbed effect on the fenders, all done in Denver. The car looked damn near two-tone silver in the light! He and my sister then drove it to see friends in San Diego. While there, he got the interior panels and headliner done in TJ in classic black roll and pleat, to match the seats he had done in Denver. I was damn near out of grade school then, and seriously dug that '56! I've yet to see another just like it, anywhere. It was a gasser-style, with a lifted front end and air shocks on the rear. It sat on four Cragar SS wheels and Goodyear Polyglas GT tires. It had a very healthy, loud and strong 265 automatic. Hooker headers, old-style Thrush mufflers, and megaphone tips made that sound like no other I've heard since!

OK, that is my car that got me excited about hot rods in general. How about you?

For me it was mt dads 55 chevy.I was probaly around 5 the first time i remember it.I thought it was the fastest thing in the world cause it was so loud,he liked running open headers,i remember going around the block standing up holding the roll bar.It was no slouch either he still has some time slips and run a 10.92 fastest e.t. I'll have to dig in some old pics and scan them and post them up. That was the first car that got me wanting to go fast

Same story for me, but if I had to choose one probably '38 chevy coupe or maybe '48 Anglia.

As for basic stock cars, it was the neighbors' blue '50 bulletnose Studebaker...
As for kustomized or rodded stuff - both found their zenith in Stuckey's "Lil Coffin".
This would have been in the 60's.

My uncle taking me for a ride in his 396 68 Camaro drag car. It scared the hell out of me, but I was so happy to go. Then the ZZ Top and other videos with rods in them.

It was a car that no one would know....Number two was a Trend Automotive built '56 Lincoln with Orange Scallops over White. There were so many nice local customs in the upper Midwest that the magazine Feature cars were just icing on the cake.....Time was about 1957........Centurion9

It would have to be growing up around a garage and yard full of rusty cars.

A 1955 Chevy that came into town from California. Straight from the shows too. Bright yellow, straight axle, chromed everything, bad ass big block mill, 4 speed, the list goes on. I have no pics. It was 1967, I was 8. The car parked in front of an auto parts store, and I had to sneak across a 'forbidden' hiway to see it time and time again. It was always worth the trouble I could have gotten in had I been caught. I will never forget that car, that stance, that chrome....I think that's the point where I 'snapped'. I loved cars before that, read all the little books and mags my brother threw away, and kept them - til he found them and threw them away again. I built models from his scraps, and extras from the 3 in one kits. I had it bad. I still have it bad. And that's good!! :-)

I was 11 years old..1955...working on my bicycle in the front yard when I hear something rumbling up Mill Street and it turns into our driveway...The driver, a young man home on leave from the Navy goes back to our garage to borrow a torque wrench from my dad.....He comes back out steps over the side of the FLAT BLACK shortened bed T-ROADSTER PICKUP, fires up the red & chromed flathead V8 backs out onto Mill Street and fries the big whitewall tires...'cause he could... I had no idea what it was at the time BUT I WAS HOOKED from then on !!...(I hate to admit it but a couple of years earlier I was so happy when my dad got rid of the two old cars taking up room in our garage because I could play in the garage when it rained out....A 1937 Dodge 4dr; and a 1925 FORD ROADSTER PICKUP !!!...)

I was 7 yrs old in 1959 whe my brother came home with a stone stock 32 5W B. He slowly built it with a 348 3x2 but before it was done his daily became a new 61 Pontiac bubbletop (Canadian now, it was a Laurentien Sport Coupe, mechanically a BelAir). Power pack 283/ 3 speed which got, in short order, a floor shift conversion, strap on tach and an 097 Duntov cam and solids. First time for me hearing a SBC at 7 grand. God I loved that car. But the Deuce thing started in Grade 2 for me.

Saw it at the Alexandra Palace Custom Car show in 1979....It was a life changing moment.

Car is now owned by Edd Brown in the UK, and has been totally restored. It will be featured in the upcoming Rad Rods Vol 4 DVD too.

My parents first car, which mom still has, was a 1947 Lincoln Continental coupe, with a hot Cad V8. My friend Teeter Spath, his father had a ten year-old 1950 Ford in the weeds of his small back yard that I think was chopped.

When we moved to Carmichael, CA, in 1962, we lived around the corner from Bertolucci's Auto Body, where I definitely recall seeing the Ohanesian '40 Mercury, and that did it for me... been a secret sloper fan ever since, but I really love anything automotive.

It was the mid 1970s and we lived not far from SanDiegoJoe's house. My mom, dad and I were eating at Picnic-n-Chicken in Broadway in Lemon Grove when a group of early lowriders rolled in. There was an early 1960s Riveria that was ultra low, flake roof with patterns, some sort of velour interior and a set of what I assume were Supremes. I was mesmerized by that car.

When I close my eyes I can still see it in my head...

Definitely model cars got me started. Started with an early monogram model T I changed with a hot ice pick and lots of model glue. Then the Lil Coffin just sent me over. In the 60's in grade school, we all traded parts of models with each other and made our own creations. Used to save up allowance and buy the open kits at Woolworths and T.G. &Y to use as building material. I still seem to have a pile of parts laying around to throw together to make a car, only full scale now. Some things never change.

In the very early fifties, shortly after I was born, this spaceship appeared and out came these humanoid type beings with almond shaped eyes. They implanted something into me that caused this affliction for mechanical things. If this happened to anyone else here, please explain this to my family. On late night drives I have heard similar stories on 'Coast to Coast AM'.

well it's not really a hotrod or custom....more of a very Roth-Fink-inspired family vehicle we had in the 80's. I recall my grandpas old 50's Buicks and Pontiacs but it was our family Ford Econoline snub nose van that really got me goin. My dad bought it when i was in 3rd grade and it was one of our family vehicles for several years. It was bright blue heavy metal flake all over and dad had flames painted from the front to the back. It had a rake with the ass up a tad on American racing mags with skinny whites and chrome exhaust out the back. no seat belts. shag carpet inside. loud speakers. it was awesome and loud. All the kids and their parents didn't quite know what to make of it or my dad. My dad grew up in California so he brought back what he'd absorbed there and never changed. Neither him nor his cars ever fit in to small town Kansas, still don't to this day. If Ed Roth ever had a long lost brother, it'd have to be Johnny Ray Brown. I loved that van. That van was my dad.

I was born 20 years too late but the path of my life has been directed by a love, some would say obsession, with all things mid-century. But the first time I can recall anything other than stock fifties yank cars making me go "WOW I love what's been done to that" is Steve's '58 Impala from Graffiti. But the kustom that really made me wanna do one myself is Craig Hahnes '55 effie;

In the very early 60's there was local guy that had a chopped/channeled 32 Ford pickup that was painted kind of a drab green. It had a Hemi in it and I'd see it all over the place. I was around 8-9 yrs. old at the time. What i didn't know was that the driver had had polio and was driving with hand controls. He was a young man at that time but he still drives the same truck today. His three sons are all infected with the car disease and they rebuilt the truck for their dad a few years ago, It's now a beautifull metallic red. That truck got me going more than anything else, but I also remember wondering why the cars with the rear ends almost dragging on the ground sounded so cool.....It's been downhill ever since.

Cars - my dad's 1960 TR-3A in 1965.
Hot cars - Hot Wheels soon after.
Rods - Hot Rod and a little yellow full-fendered '29 A roadster pickup at the beach when I was 13, circa 1976.

Hooked since!

When I was young I fell in love with a junk 56 caddy. I remember being impressed with the 1956 sqript on the dash, and of course those fishtail fins and Dagmars.

I just picked one up a few months ago...

I was hooked on cars since playing with hot wheels. My addiction to hot rods came during high school as friend of mine had a 50 ford pickup as his daily driver and we built a 51 chevy in shop class for another friend.

My Dad has always been into rods so there was always something cool in the Garage. There were always friends of his stopping by with their cool stuff. One of the best was the neighbor who was into drag cars, usually late 60's big block Camaros. He would come by, have a couple beers with Dad, then take off....HARD! I'm talking wheels up, tire smoking, full launches! We'd go to lots of shows and I see cool stuff too.
Then it happened...The October 1980 Street Rodder magazine came in the mail, and I saw the COOLEST car ever! It was a black and flamed 40 coupe....I was in love!
It's the 40 coupe owned by Dave Mock. He's "DaveyDeuce" here on the HAMB now.
That car and the article written by Geoff Carter still get me excited every time I read it! Thanks Dave!

Going to the Clutch Attist's Autorama at the old Masten Avenue Armory in Buffalo and seeing all the rods and customs, but the most memorable were the Ed Roth Cars, and the George Barris Ala Kart.

Went right out and got model kits.............

I'm only 27 but have been into cars as far back as I can remember(hotwheels, model cars. etc.). I was mostly into lowriders until one year(I was about 11-12) I went to the Houston Autorama and saw Jimi Vaughn's 51 Fleetline and Mike Youngs 60 Impala. I had never seen anything as beautiful as both of them were(still are). That very night I when home and started dreaming of bias ply WWW's, tuck-n-roll, and flipper hubcaps. I haven't been right ever since.

The first car that got me interested in Hot Rods was my Uncles 1957 Chevy. It was stricktly a drag race car, he built it in 1969 when I was 9 years old. I followed him to the track every weekend for about 3 years. Here is a picture at KilKare Drag Strip in Xenia Ohio around 1970.

Other than that I would have to say the Munsters episode with the Munster Mobile and the Coffin car Dragula.

HMMM. Back in New York, in the mid 60's (I'm around 12 yrs old), this guy John was dating my beautiful neighbor Trudi. So, he was already my hero. But, he had an early 50's Chevy with nose-bleed stance, black with blue tinted windows, a 396, 3 speed stick and no front bumper. That's prolly the car that grabbed my attention

A couple of cars come to mind for me, a neighbor had a purple 54 Corvette with a 265 and a 3 spd. Another one was a 57 Ford 2 door post with Candy Pagan Gold paint, chrome straight axle, big block, 4 spd, Goodyear Bluestreaks with Cragars. That car was bad ass.

Dad's always been in to original restorations and I've helped him work on stuff/hold the flashlight/"go get me this wrench" since I was little...mostly English sports cars, which is cool, but they can't always throw you back in your seat. When I was in 4th grade one of my best friend's dad had a '58 Impala. White with silver interior, lowered, functional lake pipes, white line tires on Radirs, and a souped up 348 tri-power with a 4-speed. That thing was cherry. It was a boat, but it had some scoot. I remember three of us sitting in the back and the one in the middle busted the little emblem on the back of the middle seat with his head when we took off from a stop light in town. Good times, awesome car, probably won't drive anything with less than a V-8 from now on because of that car.

The whole early 60's hotrod scene Ed Roth was my hero. I mooched every felt fedora in the neighborhood to make "hillbilly crash helmets". Beatnik Bandit, Outlaw, Mysterion.... Wow! What a great time that was. The car I could touch, my older brothers 57 chevy, 265 auto, raked with ladder bars and keystones, black roll and pleat interior, custom midnite green paint. The best part of all... riding along for stoplight drag racing! I've been ruined ever since.

I don't know that I can point at one car, I sort of grew up with it all around as many others mentioned.

When I was a kid starting about age 4, my dad always had Corvettes, so I grew up riding in the back window to shows, swap meets, etc...

When I was probably 12 or so, I took a ride in a blown sbc powered T-bucket that gave me the bug for hot rods.

The very first magazine that I bought off the shelf of the local candy store was the May 1961 issue of Car Craft which I still have. On the cover was Ed Roth in a white shirt and tie leaning on the Beatnik Bandit. I was hooked. That is still my favorite hot rod. The same photo is on the recent book, published "Hot Rods by Big Daddy Roth". 25 years later I was on the road working car shows with him pinstriping and airbrushing t-shirts .Whenever I started to talk to him about one of his cars he said " "Don't talk to me about any of my cars. They were all junk.If you got one up to 60 miles an hour the wheels would fall off" I didn't talk to him about any of his cars again. I did say .." You still like to make money off them though, don't you?" He didn't respond.

When I was a kid this 36' Custom cruised around the Dearborn area,.... It was the first real Hot Rod/ Custom I had ever seen,.... It was built by Frank Taubits of Dearborn and won 3rd place at the first Detroit Autorama, first had a flatty followed by a 303 Olds in 53, a guy named Doug Stetterhome (sp?) then bought it. had it for a while and he sold it to a guy named Harry Vogal in 56. the story falls apart there as Harry died in the stands at a race track in 1957 (so I am told) .
It's a 1936 Ford 5/W coupe, Chopped, quarter windows filled, filled trunk lid, rounded door corners, solid hood sides, frenched fenders to 1940 Buick rockers, front fender seams filled, cowl vent filled, bull nose, shaved, 49 Ply. bumpers., appeltons. This car was painted Olds Green with a green and white tuck & roll interior, single bar flipper caps.

Listen to my father's '32 Tudor rumble away in the garage at age 3.

That sound hooked me on flatheads for life.

It also may have been the exposure to extremely high levels of CO2 that may have caused some brain damage and mild retardation since only fools still mess with flatheads!

My first car was a 63 Tempest and I remember looking at 40 Fords in my dads friends magazines. My dad had numerous cars (I particularly remember a 55 Ford F-100 black with traditional colored flames, along with a Triumph TR-3 as Brett mentioned above. We used to ride behind the seats with our heads between the seats and the rear cowl! (But as they say, that is another story). Funny thing was I really never thought of them as customs or rods, just old cars, or cars period because that is just what we had .

I bought myself a mini-truck in the early eighties (I know, I know) and a volkswagen bug because quite frankly I thought they were cooler at the time. I used to cruise Market Street in Riverside, I know some on here will remember it fondly as I do. Well, we were parked on the side of the street by the old Lou Miller's (of Miller's Outpost fame) just talking and looking at all the mini trucks, VW's, stepside Chevy pickups and muscle cars (camaros, firebirds and such). Then I saw it, it was the meanest coolest looking thing I had ever seen. It was a black, chopped 49 Merc coupe! It had Shake, Rattle and Roll painted on the rear quarters. (I would never do that to a car now but at that particular moment it didn't detract from the car at all) I was completely blown away! In my foggy memories it seemed as though the side window was a half an inch tall and there was a long haired tattooed biker in the passenger seat and he flipped us a peace sign. Thinking back now and to be perfectly honest, the car was all wrong, kind of like the Pharoahs Merc in AG, but that didn't matter. It came by low and slow, just absolutely blowing people away. It was the only time I saw it that night, in fact, I never saw that car again, but my buddies and I just couldn't stop talking about it. Remember this was the early eighties and at least in my part of So Cal you just didn't see customs like this at that time. From that moment on I knew I had to have a Merc before I took my final car ride in a pine box. I would have to say that car is the reason I became interested in rods and customs.

Sorry it is so long but it is a memory I will take to my deathbed, it affected me that much.

There have been so many. My dads 57 chevy in 1970 and a 1966 chevelle he had. Both cars were 4 speeds. I guess thats why I think all hot rods are supposed to have a clutch. I have always been a fan of the tri 5 chevys, but my dad has a 30 A model that we built together that I really like. I guess if it's got a choppy cam and a clutch I like it

Stuff like Ryan's post Ferrari Fascination from today and the "green pages" in Hot-Rod magazine when I was a kid. Here were guys building some really cool stuff. Then I'd jump right into "All's 'ya gotta do is..."

I've been crazy about cars for as long as I can remember. As soon as I could stand and look out the window in the kitchen, watching cars go by on the highway.

The first exposure to something more than stock was my neighbor's '57 Fury convertible with pipes. Later, like many here, it was model cars. Specifically for me, the Deora.

Only thing close to a hot rod in my family til I came of age was my dads 69 Skylark, it was jacked up so high in back we had to put our feet on back of front seat to keep from sliding off .
But I think one of my biggest influences beside hot wheels and plastic model cars was the 70 superbird and a few other badass chryslers that roamed the neighbor hood and the old lady who worked 7/11 who drove an Olds Rallye 350 everyday

I was a child of the 80's and I got no shame when I say the ZZTop Eliminator was probably my favorite then (Heck, I was 10. Who can blame me.)

I still looove the lines of the 33/34 Fords. I've got the Eliminator album hanging in my garage.

Born into it. I could tell '55-6-7 Chevrolets apart before I was three.

But what really sealed the deal (and influenced my infatuation with '50s Mopars) was Christine. I have hundreds of drawings I did as a kid of 58 Plymouths, hahahaaa.

My uncle had a '78 Malibu with an LS6 454 in it, so that got my attention. And that was about '87-88 when the muscle car stuff exploded, what was an 11yr old kid to do?

My brother was a bodyman at the local Chrysler dealer and picked up a one year old, low mileage '78 Volar. . . 'ehm. . . Roadrunner with a blown 318. Swap in a 360 with dual exhaust and we've gone from grocery getter to sleeper. I remember sitting in the back seat on the still new smelling fine corinthian leather, getting pinned back and giggling when he'd punch it off the line.

A bright yellow model A coupe. He drove by me every morning as I pedaled my bike to school. I remember it had a small block Chev and was loud and mean and had no fenders. I can still see the driver in his work uniform shirt smoking a cig, he was my idea of cool. Must have been around 66'. By the time I could drive all I could afford was an old 55' Chev station wagon from my paper route money. I was kinda bummed I wanted a coupe just like the one I saw every morning. Well I finally sold the old wagon around 2000, it brought pretty good dough, after all it was a Nomad, and now I have that coupe, not the exact same one but this one is all mine, and I shall never part with it.

At the age of fifteen I walked into the Fort Wayne Memorial Coliseum where they were having a car show. The first car at the entrance was editor Spencer Murray's Rod & Custom Dream Truck. I took lots of photos that got lost over the years. Later I found out that the truck was dropped off at Bob Metz's where it was revamped and the now-famous fins were added.

all my childhood I wanted a 55 Chevrolet ( still do ) I was born in 55 and really like that body style. My dad raced in the 60's at the Peach Bowl in Atlanta and he had a 55.... I can't afford one now but maybe someday.

Around 1960 7 years old there were these guys about 10 houses down the street from me that raced a yellow ford coupe gasser, not sure if it was a Model A or a '32. They flat towed it to Thompson behind a powder blue '57 Chevy ragtop. All summer I would go stand in their driveway and watch them wrench on the coupe. That is when the switch was turned on for me. The yellow coupe had yellow windows and its name was the "Bad Banana" I wonder if any guys in North East Ohio might have some pix of it. It was out of Maple Hts, Ohio.

When I was seven or eight, my Father traded a hog trough for a 1946 Ford. Gave it to my oldest brother for his first car. Paul spent hours and hours drawing different pictures of this car customizing it, and that ol 46 went thru all the "fazes" that a kid could do to a car in the mid fifties. Primer, flames, red wheels, baby moons, full moons, coon tails, you name it at one time or another that ol 46 had it. When my Oldest brother gave it to my 2nd oldest brother after the oldest enlisted in the Navy, Ben took several of the drawings Paul had done and set to customizing this car. Being the "little sister', I was there for all of it. Loving every second of it. By the time I graduated from High School, this car was one of the koolest kustoms on Douglas. Wish I had pictures of this ol car. This car is totally responsible for my love for cars today.

Thumbs up Re: What car first got you excited about customs or rods as a kid?

Seeing the 1953 Studebaker hard top Lorwe Coupe in the show room as a kid, that thing just looked so new and so better then every other make car.
The unvaling of the new cars was a really big deal,so Dad would take me with him as each new make showed.

Hard to say when it was for me, could have been the Munster's or the Batmobile, maybe watching drag racing or stock racing, have a few uncles that were body men and mechanics, Dad was pretty handy under the hood. Remember running back and forth to the toolbox all day on Saturdays when I rather would have been watching cartoons or wrestling.

My old man use to let me sit on his lap and drive his 57 Ford 2dr around the parking lot when we lived in Wis when I was about 4. I remember my Mom stitching the interior. That was the car that started my appreciation. After that it was always going to old car shows and watching him work on what he drove. But, the car that really helped shape my personal taste was seeing a Model A coupe for sale at Back to the 50's when I was about 13. I had just started working and had enough money to buy it ($2300) but Mom was saying how it wasn't a "safe" car. It was actually an early 60's drag car that had been left alone since it's original build. I remember seeing a sbc with 6 2's and an aluminum sheet riveted to the roof that had holes cut in it. It was chopped and soo badass looking. After that it was all about drag cars. I've always wondered what happened to that thing.

The eliminator coupe was the first street/hot rod that I can remember I didn't know what it was but I knew it was cool I was 9 or 10 at the time. I didn't know anyone who had hot rods or even muscle cars. so it was pretty limited to the exposure of what was on tv.

I've related this story before on the HAMB, when I was a kid a new car was a '49. My brother and I were looking at the magazines at Duckwalls drug store/soda fountain and we saw a Hotrod magazine with a fenderless roadster on the cover. We had a derelict model A pickup on the farm that had been discarded because the motor had shit the bed. Our dad had bought it's replacement already, in running condition for about $20.

When we got home we went out and started to strip the old A down, like in the pictures in the magazine. Picture this, a couple of dumb farm kids with no skills, taking the fenders, etc. off with crescent wrenches, screwdrivers, and fencing pliers. Of course, that car never ran again, and soon enough after that, we lost interest.

I went on for a career/family, etc., with a short venture into stock car racing for only a couple of years, until I realized my career and family came first, returning to hot rodding only after I retired. The last time I visited that farm, the hood from that old A had been flattened out and was part of a hog-pen fence. The headlight bar was hanging on a nail on the back wall of the old shed.

After retirement I restored a '31 Chivvy to original condition. My first custom was'nt inspired by any specific car. I simply wanted an old (early 30s) pickup truc, most likely inspired by my memory of the Model A farm trucks we had when I was a kid. I came across the derelict sheetmetal from a '29 Chivvy sedan and liking extended (space cabs), the result is obvious. I simply built it like I wanted it. The next, my Nash hot rod was inspired by any and all hot rods of the past that were made to look lower and lighter than it's production counterpart, channelled, lowered, big motor, loud pipes, fenderless, etc., possibly inspired by that first fenderless that I saw on a magazine cover as a kid. Now I'm a kid again.

In my initial post, I was not really asking about toys or models, although I certainly appreciate the response and can relate directly to that. I was able to point out the make, model, and year of cars when I was three years old - helped to live on a busy street in suburban Denver! My Dad always had four-doors and wagons, simply because there were seven of us kids and a rod or Corvette was not gonna happen then! The TV show Batman came out in 1966 when I was in kindergarten...believe me, I wanted to own that Batmobile! When the Hot Wheels cars came out in 1968, I had a lot of them...I do mean a LOT of them! Had a shitpot full of models as a kid, too! I'd been around cars my entire childhood, but my bro-in-law's '56 BelAir that I'd mentioned in the initial post was my first REAL car that I knew, rode in, and dreamed about!

All of the responses have been great - keep them coming in!

I would, but it would ruin that memory. I could never make the car as perfect as I remember that one. 30-plus years have polished all of the blemishes off that car in my memory and I want to leave it just where it is if that makes sense? That little chicken shack by the motorcycle dealership will always be there for me, with a parking lot full of the most immaculate traditional low riders I have ever seen. I just have to close my eyes.

I wonder how many kids we have done that to over the years with one of our projects?

Kinda born in me , Dad was a mechanic for almost 50 years. He always had some sort of hot rod or drag car, nothing really custom. I heard of a car called the moonglow when I was 14 and dreamed of owning a copy. I traded my project at the time and worked all summer to finish the payoff for a 54 chevy. Painted it silver and lowered it. Was as close as it ever came to being the clone .

It was a motorized Japanese tin toy Mustang coupe in 1966, my dear dad bought it for me, it was utterly fascinating to me, I was hooked forever.

A 46 ford coupe being built by my uncles house. Was maybe 7 years old and got to climb inside it and look at that dash and the split windshield, thought it was pretty cool.

I had no live influences - my dad was (and still is) not remotely interested in hot rods - he still can't understand why I spend money on them or get so excited when I talk about or work on them. My influence came from the first mags I saw, the very first being an issue of 1001 Custom and Rod Ideas (still have it somewhere) that had an article on Jake's yellow 3W and the Randy Bianchi-built T with the triple 4 bbl carbed, blown big block and mag Halibrands. I was hooked!

I saw the Kookie Kar on TV ( 77 Sunset Strip ), Tommy's car on TV in a movie, the hot rod in the Shaggy Dog movie - finally got a TBucket in 2003. Sold it last Feb to buy a '50 shoebox - now we will try the custom route and see where that takes me. At least my wife and 2 daughters can have fun with me now!

For me it was several things. My dad working on his 29 Hiboy roadster, model cars, going to the NHRA Nationals and also going to the NSRA Nationals when ever possible. I can still remember going to the Street Rod Nationals back when streaking was the fad....yikes!

Here is mine! Original picture scanned in. I have many pictures of me as a child standing around with a lot of old drag cars that my father owned at one time or another. I remember being surrounded by these giants in the driveway always and being interested at an early age. This is a Canso with a L88 427. I remember a couple times my father leaving late at night with this thing. (open exhaust) I wonder where he was going??????lololololol By the way look at my bad comb over fluttering in the wind! lololol

Probably going to the world of wheels as a small kid in the mid-70's and seeing wild and wacky stuff like the Mummy Machine and the like. Also when we would be at my aunt's and great grandma's house in Tipton, IN you would see a Steve Tansy creation once in a while!

For me it was, a model A with a 32 grill published in NZ hot rod mag in the early 80's - just a header pic on a page, but that sexy arse end curve caught my eye, and I've been wanting one ever since.
I will get there...

Likely the '37 Ford 2D we still used some when I was 11 or so and I was allowed to drive it, (living on a farm has some advantages). Always thought it was a good looking car and wanted to make a hot rod. Life moved on.

When I was growing up in Brazil I had a neighbor that drove around a Model A on the weekend ( when he could get it going ) for fun and my grandfather helped with get the thing started all the time. That was the first time I held a wrench around 8-9 years old. My grandfather was always driving old VW Buses and Type 3's. Since them I worked my way up from toys, to bicycles, to motorcycles and now all the above

I started first grade in Sept. 1961 My first grade teacher (Judy Smith) was fresh out of college and a newlywed. Her and her husband bought a new 61 Corvette for thier honeymoon trip to California during the summer of 61. Her room was the end room on the building and she parked on the end of the parking row right outside our windows. I remember setting looking at that car and thinking how cool that car was over all the others. It was silver and interestingly silver and its variations remain my favorite colors. Without a doubt that is the exact car and place it all started. Thanks Judy!!--JK

When we were kids, my buddy's dad had/has a 59 Retractable, black with pink and white interior that is a touch of a tail dragger with very few mods. Its got a CJ hood scoop and all the interior tin is chromed. I've always loved that car and it was the first non street machine that really turned me onto the customs. That car gets out once a year, and it was this past weekend, I'll post up a pic later.

As far as hot rods, its a tie between the California Kid and one of the original members of E'ville Iron, 33 Delivery. Fat Jack's orange coupe is a close second.

My Dads 48 Ford Deluxe Coupe, it was black, sunvisor, blue canvas folding window sunshades, chrome swan hood ornament with blue plastic wings that lit up, lowered in back, blue dot taillights, dual exhaust with smitttys, white walls, trim rings and small caps with all lettering in blue on the small cap. I was spell bound at night with the dash lights and "the radio" playing The Mills Brothers or listening to Jack Benny, we were in tall cotton! man what a great memory. ~Sololobo~

I was in the 7th Grade in the frozen Northeast when, in the dead of winter at the tiny newsstand at the back of the Kennebec Fruit Company store, I saw my first for-real custom car. I've not been the same since.

This is the car that did it for me then...and still does!

As a young kid my dad always had some pretty cool cars as well, and my uncle had a junk yard and he only lived about 4 houses away. Me and my cousins used to play in those old cars day in and day out, rip out the seats to get spare change, shoot our pellet guns at them and just plain treat them like crap. He would get a coule running for us and let us drive them around the field. We were anywhere from 5-10 years old so I'm sure they were all governed with a block of wood behind the throttle linkage. I remember being excited when the crusher would come because that meant we would be getting a bunch of new cars to play with shortly after. Wow, almost makes me cry to think of all those classics I saw get crushed. The car I remember most from any of the car shows I went to as a kid was the Shelby Cobra. It was red with white stripes, I was about 5 yrs old and thought it was the sexiest car I had ever seen. I wanted one ever since that day and just recently finished building my replica. It's not red but it sure is fun. Thanks for posting this topic, brought back lots of great memories of old rides my dad and uncles had when I was young.

55gasserkid that picture is a riot. Lucky you. For me, around 1965 (I was 10) a guy around the corner had a 55 tbird he customized in his garage. He would let us hang around and watch and occasionally hand him a wrench or whatever. Candy Apple Red. Red and white interior, leather trunk with a bar and TV. I think his name was Billy Barto (northern jersey)

My 49 Old's. At 17 this was my ride. No A/C, no P/S or P/W. Just a big 303 V8 and a 4 speed Hydo-matic from the factory. It rode like a tank and turned like a truck but I loved it.

I always liked old cars as a kid. When my older brother (57 Heap) started building his first 57 Chevy I was hooked. When I turned 14 I got a 57 Chevy pickup and I still have it 28 years later.

I was 12 in 1959 and I got a radio for Christmas and started listening to WPTR and WTRY in the Albany area. I met a kid at school who was driving his older brother's 1953 Ford 2dr hardtop. It was flathead with dual Smithy and a stick shift on the column. It was a custom in progress. It had a frenched grille shell opening in front. It was nosed and decked and had 1955 Merc tailights mounted upside down. It was in black primer and the older brother had gotten "into" horses. In particular,a black stallion named Midnight. So, this younger brother had the car most of the time.

He and I became friends because I was so car crazy, I wouldn't leave him alone. He showed me how to comb my hair into a D.A. and his older buddies kind of adopted me into their gang. I was in hog heaven. This was a small town and the only trouble we ever got into was smoking at the dance at the local Catholic School.(The Nuns caught us but the older guys sheilded me behind them and I didn't get caiught.)

This '53 was a clapped out junker ,but man, I thought it was the neatest car around. The springs and shocks were so bad that it sat right on the ground and the rocker panels would scrape the blacktop when he threw it into a corner.

The kid finally rolled the car over on a back road and that ..... was that. It was totaled, but I'll never forget that car and the roar of that flathead on a back road at night.

The car I now own got me started. My uncle boght it for my cousin when he was born in 58. Thought this 31 coupe was the coolest car ever. Fast foreward to Nov 08 when my cousin called me up saying he was getting a divorce and needed cash. He gave me a non-negotiable price that was rediculously low. I was all over it, driving thru 6 states to get the carcass of this car. Willl take many years to get it back on the road, but I got my dream car..............

Killer punch was watching two nice mild custom FJ Holdens ( the ones like EFFIJY ), one fire engine red, one sky blue, cruisin' slow into town- side by side.
You need to understand Holden held 40% (near as dammit) market share so they were EVERYWHERE.
But these two were different. Low, slow, clean & smooth, sure- footed looking, like growling, prowling cats- ATTITUDE.
I was nine.

Dave Mitchell's bright red '29 roadster pickup, parked in front of his Mitchell's Muffler Shop in Pasadena, CA...was probably 5 or 6 when I first saw it, never forgot it...later, when working at Blair's, stopped to make a muffler pickup at Mitchell's, and found the car abandoned in back of the shop, top in rags and upolstery shot, faded paint. Asked to buy it, but the guy said "Dave won't sell," so thought I had seen the last of it. But it is apparently either restored or cloned (hope it's the former), picts on Don's Hot Rod page under the Pasadena Roadster Club run...great to see it again.

Hub Harness' 1960 Buick 'Cinnamon'. I saw that car at the Starbird show here in Wichita in probably 1990 or 91 and that was it!

(Got this from Buickbelle's photobucket, thanks.)

i was born in 1980. and in 1984 my dad had a black primer 57 2 door ardtop that i vaugely remember. the car that started it for me was a year later in1985 . Dad needed a new car after selling the 57. I remember standing on the front porch in the dark waiting for him and mom to come home in the new ":HOTROD" lol . in pulled a sinister black 58 nomad wagon on rallys with a 327 and dual glass. I can clearly remember running off the front porch and asking my mom when she got out of the car "does it have pipes coming out the side?" at 5 years old thats what defined a hotrod for me lol , zoomies. Anyways i can remember dad taking us kids out on friday nights and making a few laps threw our small town , I can remember him clutching it at every car tht went by seems like and racking off those glass packs. I fell in love with that car . I actually kept tabs on it up until about 4 years ago . A man came down from mt zion and offered my dad more than what he payed for it and dad had to let it go , the guy bought it for his son who apparently couldnt drive and wrapped it around a telephone pole a week after owning it . The car sat behind the guys dealership up until a few years ago , it was sold to a man down in texas or alabama to be used for parts.

I was 5 years old in 1968 when Mattel released Hot Wheels cars. The one that caught my eye first was the Hot Heap (T roadster). The rest, as they say, is history!

It was around 1960, my father rented our driving shed to some guys from a Weston car club. ( the name exacpes me, Old Age hitting me) One of the guys had a 49 Chev fastback full custom. He was killed in a car accident. The Chev sat on our farm for 2 or 3 years. It went to a garage in Bolton and sat there for a few more years. I wish I knew what happened to it after that.

In the spring of ’56 or ’57 my parents took my brother and I to the movies in Joliet, IL. There was a line outside the theatre waiting for the next feature. My brother (9) and I (11) were becoming bored and restless and my folks were trying to keep us calm. That worked for a while but eventually we were getting out of control. Suddenly we heard a rumbling noise that echoed off the buildings on the narrow downtown street. Looking toward the source of the commotion I saw a car approaching very slowly up the street. It was low and black….loud and sinister. I was frozen on the sidewalk, slack-jawed – my life forever changed. I watched in stunned silence until it was out of sight.

That image has never left my mind. I know now it was a ’52-’54 Ford convertible (rather new at the time). Flat black, chopped, with a white top (up on a warm day) and lowered with skirts. I figure it must have been a work-in-progress, probably being road tested after a winter of toil.

Needless to say, my brother and I were pretty quiet for the next few minutes. I looked up at my Dad and he had this weird smile on his face. Dad, a gear head, died in 1960 (42). Years later it finally dawned on me…that weird smile. He totally understood the situation. He saw the exact moment his sons were “hooked” and he approved!

I came home from the hospital in Nov of 1946 in my dad's 41 Ford Ragtop with what were said to be the loudest pipes in the county at that time and it's been down hill ever since.
When I was little My uncle Vernon left his 51 Merc coupe in the yard for a year while he was in Korea in the army. He took me to town in it when he got back and I think that started my love for 51 Mercs one of which I had as my first car and owned for 32 years.
My stepfather came home with a 52 Vic hardtop with a 56 Tbird special 312 in it in the late 50's that had Held C Gas records at the Ellensberg Wa strip in the 50's. It was the fastest car I had ridden in at the time and probably set me on fast cars for life.
Discovering Hot Rod Magazine on the bookmobile thanks to seeing on in a Six grader's hand and then looking for one to check out while in the 5th grade was the thing that set the hook and drug me in though.
From the time I was about 12 my dad took me to the indoor car shows in Seattle and Tacoma where I got to see cars like Madam Fifi, The bare end 56 F100, Poco Loco 59 Elkie, The sectioned red 56 Buick (now lavender) that Paul Harper later restored before it was sectioned and the next year or so after the section.

Austin Healey 100-4 LM
I use to ride with my dad when I was young when he hauled cattle to the stockyeards in South Saint Paul Mn and by the State capital was the British car dealer over the years I have had an MG midget, and a Bug Eye Sprite vintage road race car.
About 2000 I gravitated toward hot rods and sold off all of my road race stuff and eventualy found this place.
And the rest is history.

It was 1959.We had just moved into a different house in a new neighborhood.I was looking around the house when I looked across the street and saw what looked like a sports car.My cousin and I walked across the street to check it out.It was a for real 1932 Ford roadster, highboy, whitewall tires highlighting the fenderless red beauty.I looked at the engine and the valve covers said Mercury.I had just seen my first hod rod.I started reading Hot Rod and Rod and Custom after that.It took me 15 years until I had my 32 Ford,a 5W coupe.

A couple of guys I met raced this T with a 440 in the 70s. This car was the only rod in my neck of the woods. 30 years later these same 2 guys helped me build my first coupe. 2 Lane Blacktop also provided a lot of inspiration.

I got hooked by a 1940 ford coupe. I was 7 yers old when the guy that lived across the alleyway brought home bits and peices of a 40 coupe. I watched him for some time turn several trailers worth of parts into one of the coolest 40's I have ever seen. It was a inspiration, a daily driver, and a D/G warrior on the weekends. It was sweet. Stan Braden built and owned the car, lived in Cheyenne Wy. If you knew Stan, or the car, you understand.

Me and my brothers loved the movie Christine when we were young. My dad always had cool cars, some Vets, a nomad, couple Impalas. But when he drug home a half bond and half chicken wire 57 Plymouth that only had 1st gear... I was hooked. I mean we just got CHRISTINE! Who wouldn't be stoked. I still got it, stage left.

Air planes first. Sky King.
My great grand mother got a new 58 Edsel. She'd let me push the buttons on center of the steering wheel to make it go. I was about 4. I thought it was magic.
The 63 Stingray and those hideaway head lights and the Dream Rod first time saw the model.

dad always had at east one project from a 54 ford panel truck, 37 ford panel truck, 74 sportster and various others. but if i had to pick, it'd be the 67 1600 VW type 1 and the 87 5.0 rustang i had. the bug gave me the bug for cars and the rustang gave me the need for speed. not because the latter was fast but because she was slower than a sleepy jabba the hutt and that needed tending too! i know 17.5 in the 1/4 isnt too slow for bone stock hatch but still needs to be rectified! lol

i finally got my hands on a 49 or so Studebaker 2R and later a 55 2R. and now a squarebody S10 with a 383 that im workin on along with the Studes, lightbulb! I JUST REALIZED WHY IM BROKE! and i dont give a damn...

Model cars I built as a kid in the sixties, are what got me infected, and I guess the one that got me excited the most was the tijuana taxi, if somebody has a picture of it , that would be awsem. My favorite second would be the boot hill express, and the third would be the pie wagon.

I'd love to be the odd man out and say it was something cool yet obscure, but apparently for me it was the 57 belair. My mom gave me alot of my stuff that she had kept from early preschool on up til I moved out. And theres more than a few drawings of 57 chevies with flames coming out of the pipes from when I was like 5. Later on it was Allstates and Henry Js

If we don't count toys and models, well, then it was riding my schwin up to and sneaking into 605 Speedway watching the roundy-rounders, or the San Gabriel Dragstrip just across the way or the original Irwindale when it first opened. (soon after, I had the privilege of driving a car there, and quite often, towing it home) Because of this, I got the Greed for Speed. So first cars were street warriors that just so happened to be 55, 57 and 65 Chevy's. In addition, growing up in Baldwin Park, you had to appreciate lowriders or spent most of your time getting into fights about them. Add it up, equals a life of old cars and grease under the fingernails at family events.

I can almost nail it down to a specific time and place, as well as vehicle!

Late 1963, I'm 15 years old, still at school and waiting at the dentist for a checkup. There's a pile of crappy looking magazines on the coffee table (isn't there always?) but poking out from under the pile is one I've never seen anything like before.

I pulles it out, and was instantly hooked!

The magazine is this one... October 63 Car Craft.
The car is the little blue T bucket in the yellow square on the front cover.

Cheers, Glen.

The town I grew up in used to cover the new models and undrape them at midnight. My brother and I heard Ford was bringing out a new model so we rode out bikes down there to wait for the unvailing. That was 1949 and I was six years old. If my mother ever knew that she would have kicked both our asses. About 1957 this kid from California comes rolling into town in a dropped , nosed and decked 1950 Ford. I avout wet myself.

will sound strange but it was when I was a kid and my dad dragged home a rust bucket MGB GT, worked his ass off to bring that car back from the dead, my uncle even got third degree burns from the torch helping. Made me really appreciate what people put into these old cars to get them back on the road. Of course my other uncles T bucket helped too!!

Always loved my Dads 41 chevy coupe growing up. But it is a toss up between that and his 64 Corvette. I actually got to drive the vette in HS and that really got me hooked. Finally convinced dad to give me the 41 though.

This is a photo of me (TJ ) in my dads 67 Chevelle. I have great memories of hanging around the garage when I was very young. My grandpas garage is where my dad and Uncle Tony worked on cars. I remember they were loud. I also remember seeing my uncle wash parts in gasoline. I loved that smell. Ahhh The birth of a Gas Rat!

We saw a brand new 1956 Chrysler 300 with 7 miles on it sitting on the showroom floor of a closed down dealership in Madrid New Mexico 1972. That car had an effect on me my brother and my dad. The guy offered to sell it to him for $1700. We had ten kids in the family and he could not afford it. I, to this day, feel bad for him not being able to get that car. I will build one in his honor. I may have to clone one but I will do it. White with cream leather and spoke wheels. Just like the one we dreamed about the rest of that summer......and occasionally still.

I was into hot wheels then I went to a used comic book store with a friend and found a stack of little pages when I was 13. I hated comics but I spent all my $$$. After all these years I did a count of my little pages now over 500 and counting.

The one car I always think about was a neighbor down the street in Detroit with a 55 Ford Crown Vic. Nothing really special about it, had the stock orange/white paint job but also had the Merc tailights, glasspacks & was lowered in the back. I can still picture it going down the street.

Barris' Ala Kart was probably the first that really caught my eye, as I got the AMT Kit for Christmas one year, early sixties. Shortly thereafter I came to appreciate the older stuff such as the Niekamp roadster.

Years ago I had a picture-book from the '80/90s with a lot of custom cars in it. I wasn't into any style yet at the time.
Not many of them sparked my interest until I flipped the page and saw that low and sleek purple/white custom car pictured across a road. That car made a good impact and made me realise what a cool car looks like.
It was John d'Agostino's '56 "Royal Empress" Lincoln...

When i was 8 years old i saw the 37 Ford in my avatar . It was chopped with a Packard grille , maroon paint and a tail dragger. I finally bought that 37 in 1959 when i was 19 and had it ever since.

I remember when my older cousin was in high school and dated this guy who drove a tail dragger shoebox ford coupe. It was nosed and decked, had Buick side trim, full length lakes pipes, skirts, flipper wheel covers and dual exhaust. I thought that was the neatest car ever. My cousin graduated high school in the spring of '57... That fall I spied my first issue of Hot Rod magazine on the shelf at the local grocery. I've been a motorhead ever since...

Stories of my fathers 37 ford roadster from high school its been over 50 years since that car was on the street and my father is gone now too but all the local old school hot rod guys still talk about the car. my uncle also had a 40 coupe 312 powered supercharger blowing down three carbs on the street. He still drives the car regulerly since 1954.

Just about any ShoeBox Ford that was featured in the little books in the early 60's. I use to go to the local drug store and buy any new ones I didn't have and then go thru them over and over. Bought my first '50 Ford ($100.00) about that same time but did not have enough money to do much to it except drop it all the way to the ground, add white walls & olds spinners and have Earl Schibe (any car any color for $29.95) paint it icebox white and then I rattle can sprayed red and yellow flames. Looked pretty good for a high school flunky.
Later Ed Roth had some kool rods, but I still prefered kustoms, they got more girls than hot rods at least back then anyway.

A little yellow 34 Pickup called the "Huslin' Hobo"....I was probably 10. Turns out my father knew the guy who owned it in the late 60's. Sat outside for years after that then when I saw it was freshly redone... Always loved it.

The older neighbor down the street. He was a troublemaker & I guess- would fit the bill of a hoodlum here. I think I was around 10- back in the 50's, he was out of high school & living w/ his parents (dad built motors for race boats). All the neighbors saw him as trouble. A few times- he gave me a quick ride in his 32 3 window- cig hanging from his lip- Oly in hand. I never told my parents- I would have been in trouble. He had the typical look- cuffed jeans, boots, T shirt w/ a pack of Camels rolled up in the sleeve & that hair. All greased up & long for the day. I think I kinda idolized him & his car. It was loud, fast & painted shiny black. One day at school- I heard he was killed while driving his car. It had rolled & he was thrown out. I think it happened out of state like maybe Arizona. The tow company brought his totaled 3 windlw home to his parents house & dropped it in the driveway. It sat there for more than a year. It was very creepy seeing his car sitting in the driveway all that time.

+1 for Hot Wheels. Plus the Mad Max series of Movies.

As for actual cars, it'd have to be 50Fraud's long-gone, super chopped, super-low '67 Chevy shortbox with a 400SBC in it and 3"(?) straight pipes. I still want that truck!

One of my dad's best friends Blain Pfeffer had a 1937 Ford coupe that he built when he was 16. All gloss black, perfect stance. I have always remembered loving this car more than any other. His son was my age and we were good friends growing up...I remember riding in that 37 with my buddy and his dad, squeezed three in the bench seat, 6 hours down to Indy for the Goodguys show when I was probably around 10...loving every minute of it. Blain still has that car, has since built many others, and is still building. He has always been my hero...in 3rd grade we had to write a paper about our personal heros and mine was about him. He also built one of the most badass deuce coupes I've ever seen...cream with purple scallops, with a lime green pinstripe separating them. Sounds weird but it really works. I wish I had some photos to share. Anyone know Blain or his cars? He lives in Racine, WI.

For me it was the Pharoahs Lead Sled in American Gaffitti - None of my family was into cars but I remember thinking how slick that ride was.
