Default Rusty 55 chevy gasser project

This is the 55 I got back in late July of 09...I thought I would just slap a straight axle under it and an engine then worry about the rest. I WAS WRONG!

So, I got to looking at this "gem" and realized what a rusty piece of shit it was. The top and cowl were dust...if you used a pressure washer, the car would have dissolved!!! I decided the only way to fix it is to cut it in half!

Wow..I can't recall ever seeing one rust that bad in the roof area. At least not one that hasn't sat in a junkyard for 30 plus years.
Best of luck with it. I'll be looking forward to your progress threads.

My hat is off to you, sir. Passed on a '54 Ford Victoria that had less rot than that because I was afraid the roof was gonna peel off on the trailer ride home.

Here is the doner. 1955 Belair 4 door sedan! Had rusty floors and rockers, but the cowl, windshield posts and top are very nice!

That cars in about the same shape as my wagon when I started - but from the bottom up. My roof is alright, but everything else is rusted. Yours is looking good!

I so far have cut basically the lower 6" out of the car and am in the process of replacing it. Then I get to delve into the cowl. I am dreading that.

The car looks great, thanks for posting pics. Do you have any other pics of where you cut the spot welds, or where your welds are that connect the donor roof to the 2 door sedan upper window pillars? Because I'm collecting info on how my '57 Chevy 2 door conversion is going to go down, and this is all very helpful to me, since that area of seam separation and welding are the same.

The best part about using a donor car is that when you part the rest of the car out, you can usually get everything you wanted for free. I've parted out three cars already for my '57 project and I've come out ahead on every one so far. If you haven't already, cut out your extra left-over dash, and be sure to cut around all of the original weld seams. Those dashes have good resale value if you cut them out without cutting off any of the sheetmetal of the original dash stamping. I've gotten $265 for each of the two that I've had so far. Just thought I'd mention that.

That's a very odd way for one of those cars to rust. The quarters and floors must not be original either.

I forgot to mention...floors, rockers, trunk floor and quarters are junk and will be replaced. Quarters used to be radiused...someone gas welded caps over the openings and then laminated with about 1/2" of mud...infact there is remnants of ladder bars that were welded to the rearend. (I will show in greater detail how the top couples up. PM me if your questions are not answered...more than happy to help.)

We're not worthy!

Would it have been easier to fuse the 2 dr. quarters/quarter window sections onto the 4 dr. body (seeing as how both cars need rockers/floors anyway?

At any rate, we should all be sending you beer for all this hard work we're witnessing.

You know when you think about it, we all go through alot of trouble for "just" the outer skin of our cars. Maybe they should put mile meters on our mig welders, so we could tell in the end how long of a bead we have laid on them!

The 4 door had been wrecked...left rear quarter tail lamp was smeared across the trunk lid. I figured it was best to save what was left of the 2 door. I have heard some people on various sites say"converting a 4 door is not the same as having a real 2 door". I call BS. If you take your time and find the 2 door patches...I cannot see any difference. Its okay to take all the dash parts, windshield, hood trunk lid, bumpers , fenders from a 4 door, but not the top and floors...seems kind of hypocritical. I guess I did not receive the"cut-off memo"!!!

I got a lot of info and inspiration from a guy on the "trifive" website. His handle is "MP&C"...take a look in the sheet metal repair section for diagrams ie cross section of roof and rockers etc. His post were very helpful with this job.
I will have more pictures soon. Front straight axle is here, Dana 60 with posi has a also arrived and a stock 2dr seat is on its way.
It's just persistence...how an ugly fucker like me got such a hot ass old lady and a hacked up 55!!!!

Check these out!

When I replace the quarters only part of the original car will be the inner structure. Atleast I will know this p.o.s. will be 100% solid!

great to see another one saved from the crusher, if you have ever found a car that was a mouse motel you'll understand how this one could rust.
had a 53 chevy sedan that was stored for 40 yrs in the woods, tore out interior and when i removed the headliner it was raining mouse shit. they'd tore all the seat stuffing and put it in the cavity under the roof skin.
needless to say what a f@@@ing mess. alot of shit and piss stored up there, three trips to the car wash and alot of pinesol later and minty fresh.
that's my experience any way.
keep up the good work and enjoy your ride, you earned it.

That is exactly what rotted the roof... mice piss! Now for the floors and rockers, just damp western Washington weather!

Sort of...
I really did not remeber this car being so soft, but it had been 10 years since I had really taken a close look at it last. I was not planning to go into it this deep. Now that I am here, I have no choice.... not to mention I just wanted to see if I can do it!

Your going to see more and more of this. Not everybody has rust free steel anymore. It was just the other day I was saying to one of my customers that there will come a day when a rusted out car will be the only car to restore. Great work and keep us posted.

It cleaned up rather well though.

Ever see one of the buggers? Big as a cat. LOL. Here's one on the E-brake cable.

Ahhh shit, you are making me blush!
The only real unfortunate part is, the more I patch and paste, I feel inclined to build a early to mid 70s street racer out of it... no disrespect intended. I have a 671 for it and I'm still looking to put Halibrands on... more than likely ,even better, Craigars!!! Thinking along the lines of project-X style from Hollywood Knights! Only time will tell.
At any rate, this 55 will be saved, no and's, if's, or but's! One more old car out there.
Thanks for all of the kind words and encouragement...it's much appreciated. When you are in a position like mine, where talent is moderate, but funds are extremely limited, and young children run through the house, I end up with no money or time but somehow I find motivation when I am not drunk and staring at the hulk in the garage!
I am 34 years old and feeling like the term..."Street Machine" is on the cusp of being old.
Arguably, maybe, I should have died young, but promise no graffix style paint or centerline wheels...yet!
Thanks, y'all!

Hi! Just found this thread. Congrats to you my friend! Don't listen to any BS that you might get from people! You nailed it when you typed about "1 more old car back on the road" and you will have the satisfaction of doing it yourself with 2 cars that nobody else woulda bothered with. That is quite admirable! I totally dig the 70's streetracer thing also. There was absolutely TONS of 60's gassers that were terrorizing the streets in the 70's (and even in the 60s!).

Go for it! I did the same thing with a couple throw-away '65 Dodges. Again, you were right: when done properly, nobody will ever be able to tell. Absolutely, entirely worth it!

Since my welder seems to have taken a "dirt-nap" , decided to work at rebuilding the doors. The old gasser doors say "HUSTLER"... they appear to be 57 doors (based on the trim hole configuration). These doors have been gutted so I am going to put all of the inner-structure back so the doors latch properly and glass can be installed in the original fashion. The rusty 2 door, doors are donating the necessary parts along with some interchangeable 4 door, door pieces.

Part of doing a project like this is replacing all the crap. By the time I was "finished" with my '56 F-100, the only original parts were the frame, front axle, rear springs, doors and the instrument cluster.
Projects like this require "The 3 P's", Patience, Perseverance and Profanity!
Oh yeah, and beer! LOL!

Looks great guys!

FYI, 55 and 57 doors are the same (minus the trim holes). On 56 doors the lock position is closer to the handle.

Funny you mention that, because when I had my '56 years ago everyone thought I was crazy when I told them the 55 and 57 doors are different!

ID:	873843Started cutting pieces from the very rusty pair of doors that came with the matching body...atleast it was a set!
I plan to use the inners to repair these gutted old gasser doors. I want windows that roll up and wing vents, so between the two, should work out well!

Your dedication and determination go unsurpassed. Reading this thread brought me out of our Ravens loss. It shows that one can get a lot accomplished with "the power of an hour". A good friend just went through 8 months of a similar resurrection on a 55 sedan delivery but honestly not as far gone. A+ on sticktoitiveness. It deserves gasser stance and attitude.

Dammm! My project was put on hold cause of rust too! Im now buying collecting all kinds of metal forming tools and welders dragging them into my area of shop. I started cutting and ended up so far with 3/4's of the floor gone and thats where I stopped so that I could have a car to look at. You make me a believer that it can be done one day.

Mine was the kind that sat in a junkyard for 30 plus years on a slope trickling water to one back corner and then on to the ground. Your doors remind me of mine too.

Funny
Watching your project come together(which by the way turned out terrific!) is one the things that motivated me to get this car. Unfortunately, the rust in this vehicle just does not seem to stop. I took all that time to remove the outer quarter to find the mouse piss has made the inner panel a bit thinner than I can accept at this point. When I am done the only part of the original 2door body will be the package tray trunk hinges drivers side rocker panel and some of the roof support stampings otherwise the rest will all be replaced. So just mo-bucks and hard work...all it seems to take!
Thanks for the encouragement!

For those who want to know how these panels fit here you go. The fit is great...not GM perfect with respect to parts of the stamping, but better than rusty crap. If anything, the stamping is a bit too crisp on the belt line and a bit too faint in the door jamb area. Overall fitment so far is excellent though. I was not happy when I opened the boxes as the pass panel had been crushed in shipping...also was not thrilled by the drivers panel pictured until I hung it earlier tonight. I tend to be a perfectionist, so I can be my own worst enemy. These panels are well worth the $ and are much better than quilting a rusty panel together. GAME ON!

At this point, I believe you are right! This car just has become more rusty every time I dig in deeper. Fortunately the main pieces I needed(2door only parts inside the top) were good. Those are the only parts I can use from the original body now!

Dude you have my respect!!! But a good challenge makes any builder better, and it looks like you found one. Where I respect you the most is you didn't turn your back on the rust dangers to procede with out correcting. We all love what we do, and you are doing it right!!! Good job just don't seem good enough for what I've seen in this build! Your progress on this shows you are one hell of a builder! Plus alot of nice 55 photos on here to!

Wonderful. I love seeing an old rust bucket getting saved. Having lived a few blocks from the ocean for a good chunk of my life, i seen to be constantly fighting the rust bug in my vehicles. I am so impressed with what you are doing.

Here is some inspiration for you Nitrohonky: Went to the local curise spot with the '55 and the new 350hp, Thumper cammed 350ci motor. I even let the wife drive because I was drinking beer. Lots of fun.

It's definately worth it to save a car. Mine wasn't quite as bad, but I did have to replace some of the inner structure inside my 50. I know I'll feel a lot better about having done it right when I'm finished. Pics have one side finished, I did the same to the other side also.

Hello yall
I'm still on board with this project, but it has been in a holding pattern since about March. I promoted at work, so my schedule has been backward and since my last update I have completely blown apart and almost finished rebuilding/ restoring an early 60's canned ham trailer. Trailer was about as bad as my 55...my neighbors think I hate myself! I have been collecting parts while the '55 project has collected wood dust from the trailer work. I hope to start hitting it hard by December...I will keep you posted!

Looks like you have your work cut out for you too. I would imagine there is not as many panels avaible for the earier 50's gm bodies? I have to say I find it easier to rebuild a body than chopping/sectioning etc. Looks good!

Can't do much right now as I hurt my shoulder at work. I have been buying more parts and doing small jobs that only require one arm, such as the tedious task of spot weld removal. New rockers arrived today and they fit well. More to come!

I have a new welder, my air compressor is wired/working, and my doctor has lifted a bunch of my weight restriction, so I'm back at it.
Here are some pictures of the rear deck final fitting, the new contour to the front fender wheel opening and if you look closely, you can see the 55-56 Chevy wagon folding rear seat mocked into place.

55's on the back burner again. I will post progress as soon as some is made. I have a feeling it's going to be a while as I have too many irons in the fire at the moment and need to get them out of the way. Back to collecting parts!

Here is what is blocking my 55's progress...1964 Cardi "Traveller" canned ham trailer and my Chevy stepside( need a driver!).Everything I own is a pos in need of complete rebuild!
I'm going all out to get these off my list of "to-do's". Then I can post some regular progress without interruption!

Man, ditch that 36 Ford and whatever else and finish the Cheb. You got waaaay too much into that 55 to let it sit there and waste space in your garage. If that car were a person it would owe its life to you so you need to justify all the work you put into it, and make it work for you. i dig the hell outta the wheels you picked up for the back. And yeah I'd be a liar to say I never let other project dreams F&%K up the timeline for the one I started first, and would most likely finish first. Kev

Awesome...post some pictures of your 55. Only thing I have done to my 55, in the last year, is move it into the corner of my shop. It is collecting dust from my 36 build.

For starters, you all are going to get some HAMB porn as this project is going to get finished soon. Bad news is I traded it today. I am going to finish all of the panel / metal work. and I will keep you posted with progress. Don't worry going to a very HAMB friendly home!!!

Yeah not too shabby. I've gotten more for it in the last two months than I ever did the first two times I owned it. Got a blower and a nice vintage engine waiting in the wings for it.

I look foreward to finishing the metal work... seems like I enjoy that more than anything else anymore. Just cannot do everything I would like to on my limited buget. I will not leave this thread hanging.
