Wow, thanks for putting up that link Groucho. Being from the east, namely Ohio, I rarely see lowriders. That is one of the many reasons I like to visit your neck of the woods, to see them! I didn't see too many when I was out for the LA Roadster Show though (there is always that nice display at GNRS). Guess I wasn't in the right places?

PS I would kill to see more pictures of that 69 Mustang in Lowrider clothes (and a rumble seat???) but doesnt seem to come up ever.

The ol 61 bubble is heading close to that look but it's not totally practical livin in rural MI. The paint work wears me out too. Lots of traditional applications and imagination. Grew up in Baldwin Park CA, big hot bed for lowriders, so I have a great appreciation for them. I am a big fan of the Bombs, but if it rolls on Supremes, I love it too. (dont get the 13" Daytons either) My 60' elco rolls on wide-whites and Supremes and doesnt sit low enough for me. Love the link Groucho, thanks!

Thats what i was askin for. The stang w/ the rumble seat, im pretty sure its the same one, i pretty much doubt some other madman could have made a second 69 that way....a link please!!! or you mean in the mag? I'll check the site myself but please post pics if you have em, the only one ive seen is the one of the Kid Deuce album on Grouchos link.

Being a teenager during the 1960's in Bakersfield, Fontana and Pismo Beach, CA, I saw lots of lowriders running around. I was into muscle cars, so never looked at them close or cared to. Besides that, muscle/drag car guys and lowrider guys were kinda' on opposite sides of the social fence.

Probably 30 years ago, I ran across a cruise-in / car show in Santa Maria, CA while cruising up the 101. I think it was an annual event. This was my first up-close lowrider experience. The quality of those cars was unreal. HOLY CRAP... Bombs galore! and Tri-Tip sandwiches. I'd been missing out.

Oh, and I don't care what kind of wheels are on 'em, I'll look.

Now, about the "Paso vs Calif" debate..
I'd like more evidence from both sides before judgement.

I love it i finally see some lowriders i remember being younger and being in the store at the mag rack lookin at hotrod mags and LOWRIDER and tellin my mom and dad i wanted one and them telling me they were stupid....But i loved em then and still do where do you see even in tradtional rod mags a perfect panel painting fade or lace job like you see everyday on a lowrider!Cruising is not a crime!!!!

That car looks pretty sweet, Toss on some astros, pinner whites, I think a deep candy blue would set it off like crazy (with loads of silver flake), swap out the black top for a white top (or no top, and a nice panel job on the roof) white guts, buckets in front and back with a flowing consol, a mild hydraulic set up, and then so everybody knows you've got a hot rodder side, slam a 440 under the hood with some nice go fast goodies, top it all off with a small fortune worth of chrome...and you'd be cruisin' in one bad ass ride....

I've always been more of a Street Racer, Muscle car, Hot Rod guy , ...but i do appreciate all the extensive work that has always gone in to a lot of those cars. I really liked the "Livin the Low Life" episode where the Low Rider club went to Pomona Swap to buy extremely rare aftermarket accessories for their 40's Chevies.

I'm no Low Rider expert by no means BUT , i grew up in the early 70's in Santa Ana, and that town was full of candy colored cars. One thing i remember hasn't been done yet and i'd like someone to answer why. I distinctly remember seeing lowered cars with Cragars, thin whites,brake drums painted white,wheel wells painted white, and gas tanks painted white. Might sound funny to some but it really stood out back then.......

Ok, so from what my dad and his friends have told me....Cragars were more $$ than Supremes, but if you were hot shit ya ran wires (Cragar Star Wires, and Tru Spokes)....

I love the idea of a muscle car as a lowrider... 1 reason is if it was done now days, it would pis alot of people off.......And really the 'Stangs, and 'Maros look good on the ground with period lowrider rollin' stock... I still want a 2dr Vega Wagon...or a Corvair, to do up as a lowrider...I think that would be sweet. I'm not going to mention my ideas on a lowrider style Datsun pick up though.....

is Cholos, it has a site, just google Cholos Japan, you'll be amazed
at the quality of their work, from metal to paint....
yeah,the paint of the boat tail rivi in this pics is theirs, as is
the build,not to my taste, but so well executed its incredible!
The chevy wagon on wires is more my style, a subtle yet superb car.

Wow... thanks so much man, Pratt's '58 was actually one of the inspirations for my car. When I took the Olds to Gary Seeds to get the roof done, I brought a picture of that roof!

For my man that was asking, the car is stock, mostly original and complete with the exception of the paint, air-ride & wheels. Interior was redone in the original style as well. Its what I feel a lowrider should be; all stock w/ full trim, quality paint & layin' low. Just working on my accessories & locating the right set of Skylarks for it.

If you dig down to Lowriding roots I think you will find that a lot of the early Lowriders from Tejas came to LA and went back to Tejas telling stories about Lowriding...

great thread, I don't know why some people don't consider them traditional, they've been around long enough, some beautiful cars, and incredible craftsmanship . not my style of build but i really enjoy seeing one out cruising. These guys put their hearts and souls into a lot of these cars. Often in the Latina community, the entire family , all generations, is involved in the build, and the upkeep of the cars. having your entire family involved in working on a car together is a great thing for the car hobby in general.

Yeah Ryan he hasn't lived it.. but neither have I, I'm only 25.. haha.. but I did grow up in East Salinas where lowriders were king.. more mini trucks and late 70's GM cars around when I was growing up, but there were still a lot of old school lowriders in my neighborhood... that lived it including my dad who used to tell me stories about cruising Alisal in his 64 Impala before it got stolen... Wish I coulda been around those days..

Those are old Appliances... a really clean set too.

I'll scan in some of the old lowrider pics I have from the Salinas area.

No but at the time it was actually Cheech's car and the quarter windows said "La Bamba." They wanted to change it for the movie, so he pulled the windows out and swapped them for the ones they put "Love Machine" on. He rotated them back out after the movie.

I love how he takes forever to get it dusted off and started and then just makes a u-turn and parks across the street.

Anyway, they're not exactley the same, these have slimmer spokes
for a cleaner look, as much as i love cragars they are nice from 15" up.
I would still consider them if i could find a good deal tho.
Another wheel im considerin is the cragar true spoke, i've seen em on the
ads here a while ago w/ 4 lug pattern. Theyre wicked, just like the OG true-spokes.
But will take a while b4 i find anything available at a decent price im sure.

Denver Mullins Rivi was White w/Orange & Red Flames adorning a black vinly top. I seen it at a used car lot in the mid 90's on Mt. Vernon & Laurel Ave. I can tell you (Cos they're my Dad & Uncle) The Heckle & Jeckle Candy Root Beer Brown(not black) 64 Rivi, A low mile, only FOUR years old at the time, Doctors trade in for a 68 Rivi.. used air cylinders(not bags) to put the car right on the ground. Rondy's glass cut the windshield, twice, cos Dad & Uncle broke the first one installing it. That snapping sound that makes you sick when it breaks. I will upload pics real soon. I like the mid-late 60's Fords. I remember my Dad had a '68 Meteor (a Canadian Mercury) Redeau 500 2-door fastback. I wish I had it now. It would make a lowrider/mild custom.

Awesome info. My ol man was a good friend of Denvers He helped with the vinyl top and said it took them three tries to finally get it to lay correctly. If someone could post up a color pic of the Riv that would be awesome. It was a shame when Denver passed away he was a real good guy.

I grew up in LA, then my parents moved to the Burbs (sunland and tujunga). My first memory of a lowrider was my uncles 70 boattail Riv on cragers and lifts (then he got some wires.. (this would have been around 75 or 76 I think, may a year earlier). its sat nose high most of the time and I just dug the car..

I started to move some stainless mouldings an a 56 bel air grille outta the way, since I last seen 'em in the garage. They were still back there, leaning against the wall. I will take pictures of them tomorrow and put them up. I know they used to fill them up the same as you would air shocks, an there was only cylinders in the front. They weren't running a compressor and tanks like the new set ups.

These are the actual cylinders they used from the 64 Rivi. They kept them an I just photograghed them today. They had a 7up tank aired up in the trunk with a selector valve inside from a Big truck. It was nuetral in the center an Up & Down to move the car. The Bradley Twins built a 60 T Bird, and came up with the Air Cylinder idea in 1966. So it was in 1967 that Dad & Uncle installed them on the Rivi. I have more photos of the Chopped Rivi that I need to have scanned, along with one of Denvers Rivi... Stay tuned

Does it need an oblong hole to compensate up and down movement?

Man, the HAMB is so great for this stuff. It's amazing for a younger guy like me to be able to get this info first hand from those that actually built this stuff. I will ask them more about how everything attached. It's not a good time right now to come around. There's a lot of stress with the District Attorney on us to put our cars all on cement,(16 in total) so theres a lot of work to be done here. Our hearing is early next month, and we have to show improvement. Somebody should start a new thread on Code Enforcement/ D.A citings since they're scraping the barrel for revenue. I bet there's a lot to be said on this subject

Yes it makes sense thanx a lot. Im just a bit hesitant on using 'glass, its
not my element at all n im kinda worried about screwing it big time.
Does anybody have a step by step article? I'll go look at one now anyway,
im pretty sure they would look tits on my project and im not far from gettin
to the body mods, so its just about time to start plannin on everything esthetics-wise.
These here and the previously posted 'stang represent rather well the look im after,
the orange/gold 'vair might be a lil too extreme thoug, but the othe one is close to perfect.

My freind Armono was in the Imperials back when the Gipsy rose got thrashed. He said it won car show after car show and You where expected to ''retire'' your car after it won every show it could. The guy kept showing it and winning...so...it got thrashed so he would have to step down.

That car, imo, would look better without the modern 100 spokes. Maybe some Trus or Starwires. On bombs, I also dig stock caps and WWWs. Just kinda throws off the classic bomb look.

Today? I can only guess that the hydraulic equipped cars, have too much coil spring (for hopping) that they won't "lay". So much for the term "Lowrider" eh? In my past, a car HAD TO LAY! That was first and foremost. But, we'd sometimes ride our cars high in the 70's to show the others that we were "lifted" or "juiced" (having hydraulics). We'd usually ride around with the rear low, and the front locked up. But, when we parked, the car would "lay"

Those pics bring back some fond memories of growing up. I grew up in Santa Ana, CA and there was a huge lowrider scene there in the 80's. I remember riding my bike with my buddies to Centennial Park and Mile Square Park on Sunday afternoons to check out all the car clubs and their rides. We were 12 year old slaps and still on the old BMX's, bunch of dorky kids from the neighborhoods. We used to bullshit our parents as to where we were riding off to because they would shit had they known we were hanging out around those parks back then. There were a good amount of gangsters there, and the occasional fight/shanking, but for the most part everybody was there to check out the rides and all the smokin' hot Mexican chicks that followed. I don't have any bad memories of all the lowriders and cholos there, they were actually really cool to us kids and always would give us a soda or let us hang around their cars and talk to us. Probably cause we were 12 and weren't a threat to picking up on their chicks, drinking their Budweiser, or fighting with them. Hahahaha good times.

Yeah, early 80's still represents "early" lowriding to me because that's when I grew up and this stuff really hit me. Still pre-100 spokes, but not quite the Starwire late 70's stuff. Your guys' club is pretty rad btw.

wow, this thread took me WAY back to the day when my cousins and I left their Hebron house to cruise Alisal on our bikes. Then find our way to Closter park. Nothing but candy panels tru's/supremes and lots of Aqua net.
I remember when i went from 3 batteries to SIX, then from delta dumps to Watermans! I can still remember breaking ball joints, popping springs, 3 wheeling corners, taking reflectors off the street with my crossmember and getting pulled over every two blocks. That was a time when your biggest worries were buckling your quarter panel, breaking keys, and frying your armatures. DAMN, I never thought the HAMB would bring back those memories. The pictures are amazing. Seeing all the old Imperial CC pics and the plaque is awesome. I still have both my Street Life and Imperials(NorCal) plaques and will prolly get buried with them. That's true history right there.
Now i'm inspired to dig out all the old Lowrider show pics and scan them. I've got tons of Loco '64 as my dad did LOTS of work to it.

and much respect for jesse valdez and his Gypsy Rose creations. I've never met a more humble guy outside of Cole Foster. Jesse is first class and his ride reflects that. Having been a member of The Imperials, it opened my eyes to a whole other genre of lowriding.
As far as Loco 64 is concerned, we haven't seen the last of it. My dad did some truly different "things" to it for the masses to appreciate. George Torrez(the owner) took a bit of a break from her. His brother Louis, the original owner, is now building a very nice chopped merc('50).
I'd dig out some pics of the "under construction" work, but i'm at work. Rod Powell's work on that car is beautiful.

Hahaha! too funny. I remember being there with the group. Lifestyle and Imperials "didn't see eye to eye" to put it calmly. And being from NorCal didn't help. I remember the drama that Be Real of Cypress hill was giving the magazine. As Kid Frost(wow-NOT HAMB relatated at all!) hung out with us, he was asked why he was socializing with the "farm boys" from Salinas. Crazy shit.
Las Vegas was a nice ride. There were so many of them at every show. I remember vividly Rod Powell telling my dad and I that we haven't seen showmanship at carshows till we've attended a Lowrider show. Nothing but glam, loud music, loads of kandy paint/graphics, and half nekkid women. He was right, there was nothing like it.
It was like a party.....hell, it WAS a party. But that's for another thread.

Nick, I don't know who owned the Riviera. But it was painted by Bill Carter in the late 60's. I bet Howard Gribble knows since he took those photos. Shit he has so many great shots, it might have been his. I know for certain that the Impala was owned by Howard Gribble. One of the baddest ever. Came out of the South Bay, I believe. Bought new in 67. Painted and lifted with in 6 months. Striped by the one and only Walt Prey. You might recognize Howard Gribble as the photographer who took all those oldschool pics from shows back in the day(many of which have been posted in this thread). He contributed lots of old photos and info to the Lowrider History Book that LRM did. He first posted them on his 'Kid Deuce' flickr page. He now has a page on Rik Hoving's site as well. I have a great deal of respect and admiration for him.

Thanx Eryk, yeah i know Howard's work, and i have all of them shots from his page, but i had no clue it was his car, and i never saw him too, so i didnt recognize him.
I'll title the Rivi album as Bill carter's work maybe, or i might look for Gribbles contact and ask him.

Haha, that's the same show my pics are from. Funny thing is, I went to probably 10 or more shows last summer and pretty much everyone had killer lowriders. It's funny we both posted from the same show because there are a lot more out there. This was just the local Nagoya area and this show represented 20 or so car clubs-almost all in central Japan.

I'm not sure how many clubs in Japan, but a lot! My personal opinion is that the Nagoya area probably has more car scene stuff (at least old American iron wise) than anywhere else, even Tokyo. It's an industrial town with a huge car history and lots of talented people down here.
I'll post more pics later, but most of my pics are of 'Bombs' since that's what I have. I've posted a lot of them on the "Bombs" thread.

It took me a long time to find mine too. I asked around for a good 5 or 6 years and everyone said Truspokes/Classics/Rays weren't out there. Cherry cars! My brothers started driving in the mid-sixties and the popular rim to use then (for both lowriders and hot rodders) were the chrome reverses. Both my brothers were using these rims until the 70s when people started using Cragars, Rockets, etc etc... brings back memories.

Also, lowriders are what got alot of us into the car "hobby". Growing up in east Dallas, that was all I was surrounded by. It also explains my different kind of taste when it comes to cars. When I bought my Newport, EVERYONE gave me grief. I wasn't 100% sure what to do with it. But it didn't take long to remember my roots. It will be built in a 60's style with a heavy lowrider influence (sold the supremes and bought a set of era correct wires). There is nothing wrong with a tastefully done lowrider-at all!

I made it from parts off an old lamp, a hardware store fixture, and the lid to my grandma's crystal sugar jar. I always wanted to get my grandma's crystal back because she's gone and the chandalier meant alot to me. But the new owner digs the oldschool style. Man, I loved those two at the GNRS, and PM'd Axle about them a couple weeks ago. The gold one belongs to Mark Idzardi, and the pink one is his girlfriend's ride which apparently started as a parts car before the Shifters kicked it down some serious style. The gold car is bagged, and the pink car is lifted...

I agree. But the lowrider movement has been and always will be evolutionary. Imperials have always had cars that have broken molds and set trends. Not every one of them is my cup of tea, but they still hold their place in lowrider history. I definitely feel what you're saying though Groucho. There was a time when a lowrider had to lay. And show points didnt mean shit. Some of us are stuck in that time period...and proud of it.

Haha. I knew you'd have something more to say. You always do. For the record, the car we're talking about was low as fuck. But it also had something that was considered showstopping in the late 80'd/early 90's...murals in the wheel wells. Thats why you'd always see it raised up to show off the detail in those wells. Again, not my cup of tea, but a significant part of lowrider history whether you and like like it or not.

But back on track...

Well, I’ve been trying to see if anyone can identify the clone that I am building with no luck. I’ve had my thread on the main message board but it may be too general and what I am doing might be too specific. It’s a ‘50 ford coupe that was the car that captured me when I was a teenager and set the direction of my life.

The original builder was a so cal legend and the car is considered as one of the original so cal lowriders in the area that is now called Kustomland. It had Lynwood at the upper boundary (this car was built in Lynwood) and Long Beach at the lower boundary. This area became known as the “hot bed” of hot rodding and custom cars. There were areas in N.Cal, the Midwest and the east coast, but Kustomland was the breeding ground that fueled all the other parts of the country. It was the little mags, Rod & Custom, Custom Cars, Hot Rod, Motor Trend etc. that told the Kustomland story. This car shared the same grass (outdoor car shows) with the Aztec, the Grapevine, the Kopper Kart, Bugarins Merc, Bettancoarts Merc, Zupans Merc. etc. As well as the pages (and the covers) of the aforementioned magazines.

Eryk, Thanks again. A friend and I were talking about Altered Image the other day. I know it isn't every one's style, but there was/is something about that car. I heard it is going to make a comeback, it can't wait to see it again. That was a very influential car for me....I think that is why I end up painting everything candy gold.

I'm aware that its not everyones favorite and that there are plenty of "nicer" Mercs out there. But the Lopez Merc made an impression on me like no other. Much like Watson's Grapevine. And Mox Miller's 58. Gypsy Rose is another that grabbed me by the balls and never let go. Some cars just have that impact no matter how many people disagree about their merit or appeal.

I've been a Chopped Merc and Lowrider afficiando all my adult life. When that April '73 Street Rodder came out and I saw the both rolled into one car, I was in heaven.

The Charlie Lopez Merc is as important and iconic of a Lowrider today as when it first appeared. No doubt about it!

I loved the alter image monte carlo when it first came out. hate the tilt front end.. but with it sitting down with the convert look, it rocked. (I think it was the first version with the top off that I liked best (seen it a few times at shows when I lived in the bay area.

Here was my 69 Lincoln had Daytons on it but after we got done with the suspension the car would be on the frame and the wheels would be in the air..had to go 20/22's just to get it to sit right.

Yeah, got it from Mike....I wanted this car since last august when he first put it up here for sale! Finally sold my 51 Belair and drove all the way to freekin Mich. in the snow to pick it up! I love it! But the wheels are gonna go.....I never liked them, even back in the day....besides, they are too far gone to just buff up...and the tires are dry rotted. Im gonna go with chrome reverse and baby moons w/thin whitewalls.

I asked on the photochop thread to alter one of the pictures of my Ford w/ the cragars im goin to use and the color im thinkin of shoting right now.
There will be more to it, a few body mods that are too tricky to be photoshopped and the interior that will be white tuck n roll as the early style lows....also the roof might be laced and other details....
anyway, im very excited as it looks a lot like my vision of the thing and im even more convinced this car is perfect for the style...at least over here!

Have you thought about using pearl white on the body? I am huge fan of green, but I think the pearl white or maybe a deeper green would look better. I applaud you for working with what you have, I think it is going to look good.

The Olds above probably has two way cylinders, like on a front end loader. There used to be a little honda civic a local guy had, that had them. They have a hose that feeds the top of the cylinder to raise it and another hose that feeds the cylinder right below the piston part of the shaft so fluid could force the cylinder back into the down position. He could raise the whole car up, then suck one of the wheels off the ground, or even wag the rear wheel up and down like a dog scratching with his back leg.

They also make'em for air. And i just recently discovered they were also used in the 70s.

Hell yeah. My grandma took us shopping for school clothes at Peoples every year. That and the JC Pennys a few doors where you would go down the steps into the boys section. I always thought that was cool. like a underground Pennys. Damn dude I remember that big ol pair of pants on the wall at Peoples!!! They were like size 100 waist. Peoples was like the only place you could get charlie brown shirts in sanfer. The mall was the shit. Now its only good if you want a wedding dress.

my car is a reformed lowrider. the PO installed the hydraulics and had wire wheels on it up until i bought it. he drove it from Oregon to Mexico so it has a Tijuana interior in it. the wheels that are on it in the first pic are the cheapies he through on it to sell.

the wheels on the front in the second shot are the ones i just picked up at the swap meet. i just have to find the time to get the other two on it....

Lots of people forget how important the early Low-Riders have been for the scene. Larry Watson painted a lot of early Low Riders, and from those the early 80's custom cars evolved. And then the revival of the Custom Car scene in the early 80's.

I personally never heard the term "lowrider" used before the introduction of Lowrider magazine in 1977.

The Watson-type late models were simply referred to as mild customs (usually featuring wild paint and hydraulics) during their heyday in the mid-60's, a dozen years previously. They have come to be called "Bellflower" cars, although I never heard that term in the 60's either.

I believe that the "lowrider" movement was inspired by the Watson (now known as Kustomland) movement. Typical lowriders are more ornate, sometimes feature murals and almost always have 13" wheels (which really sets them apart from any other style).

I did my near-new '65 Bonneville in '66, inspired by my trips to the L.A.
car shows and that scene. Pearl blue with skyblue flake top and crushed glass flake lightly sprayed over both.

AAFD, here are some 1st gen camaros from my stash. The green one w/out the graphics is my favorite, the Groupe one is very well done, and the whole green thing its pretty rad, but there are some details on the paint,(???they seem muralish?? mural-ish) that i really dont like, while on the other hand the scroll work on the red one looks just amazing!

Think id appreciate lowriders a little more if most of them didn't have daytons and weren't the same old impalas......over and over. Love that gypsy rose though. Remember seeing it at the peterson museum along with some other nice ones.

I've always had a soft spot for lowriders, ever since I was a vatito in SoCal and regularly cruised San Fernando, Van Nuys and Whittier back in the 1960s. I'm trying to get my grandson to build our project longroof into a lowrider, but as he's Import-centric, I suspect it'll be a bit of a battle.

I might just have to have two sets of wheels, as we're lowering the wagon, anyway: a modern set of alloys for him and a set of lowrider style (wires?) for when this old fart wants to cruise. If he loses interest in the build, well, watch out for a set of Bellflowers gracing the Ford's rear quarters.

I sort of fell into being a member of a lowrider club, The Classic Lowriders out of Venice.
I am a hotrodder, hence everyone calls me "Hot Rod" from the club. Though i have owned and love some sweet lowriders.
That is not an easy club to "fall into", but everyone in the club are great guys, some I consider family. We all love cars, and all lived in the same neighborhood.
And all stand up solid guys being a positive force in their community.
I am not active in the club anymore due to time and logistic constraints, but still family with some.

The Classic Lowriders So Cal cars are very Hamb friendly. Mostly 30's and 40's car done with old school equipment and original accessories on them Time warps. '39s, Fleetlines.. the old bombs...

Hot rods, lowriders, customs, etc... transcends it all. I solid guy is a solid guy, and a bitch'n ride is a bitch'n ride.

The lower stance in the earlier photo in the snow is correct, Bonez.

We had just unloaded the Uncertain-T from that trailer. The rear appears high in this shot because the '67 was hitched to the Uncertain-T trailer. The front of the trailer had to be jacked up to be able to unload the T without the dragging the undercarriage and so the rear of the Impala came up.

I'll scan higher rez photos of the Bonneveille when I have more time.

I had big regrets selling the orange one, and have pretty much been looking for one ever since. It's a keeper, next to the Vette and my 38. I do not have a plasma cutter. But, I'll help any other way I can. I think the first thing is to draw it out as best I can for you so it's clearer than me just talking about it. Plus, you can show it around to the other guys. Maybe they HAVE seen it? Oh the cups don't have to be welded in.

Hell yes, love the tru-spokes with thin whites, and the astro supremes with the same type of tire. I've always dug low riders, especially the impy's, but my new favorites are the 63,64,65 buick rivieras. Damn those things look SO clean with a set of supremes, flaked paint, and sittin on the ground. Praise the Lowered!!
