I've been looking at Bonneville videos on You-Tube lately and I found this little gem. There isn't any sound but the footage is pretty cool.
From Marriott Library: Film from Collection A0185 Joseph Howard McGibbeny Audio Visual Collection. This film is titled "the Mormon Meteor does it's thing." The problem is there is no Mormon Meteor in this film. This instead looks to be John R. Cobb and Capt. George E.T. Eyston Racing their cars, the Railton and Thunderbolt at the Bonneville Salt Flats. This item is protected by copyright. For more information regarding this film, please contact the Moving Image & Sound Archivist by email at justin.riley@utah.edu or by phone at 801-585-3073. |

Thats cool, if you want to see some footage of early LSR in Britain (Pendine Sands in Wales) there are quite a few videos here including Parry Thomas's doomed run..

That is a pretty cool video and good quality for the time it was filmed. I wrote about the battle between those two for my writing class.
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/s...d.php?t=379475 The Thunderbolt had eight wheels and they said he never made a run without at least one of them going flat. These guys were running the salt in the thirties and doing it in over 300mph. Pretty amazing.

I found another great set of clips from a BBC documentary about land speed racing in the 60's. The first clip has some good shots of Cobb, Campbell, and Eyston.

I thought that I would add another You-Tube find. I believe this one has vintage Mickey Thompson footage during his attempt in 1960 (correct me if I'm wrong).

Never saw a cutaway of John Cobb's car before, looks like all the safety of a lawn chair at 400 mph. Amazing...

Thunderbolt toured New Zealand during WW2, but was destroyed by a fire. Engine remains can be seen in the Museum of Transport and Technology, Western Springs, Auckland, NZ. NZ is the nice little country to the east of OZ...
