  4. I always wanted to be in the Fisher Body Craftsman guild contest. Still have a booklet about how to get into it from the late 60's. They always came up with such cool looking cars.
    Good post.

That is the Buick Y-Job. It was a real, usable car and Harley Earl drove it for years.

There is lots of information available online, do a google search on it.

  22. The reason they seem fresh is you don't see them everyday. Also, if mdern desingers would get off the computer and use thier imagination, we'd get cool results. Why do cars all look similar now? Because everybody's using the same software!

(just a rant, i don't know who's using what software, but it's a reasonable guess!)

    Hey,

Too ,most major designers are comming from the same design/art schools.
Their work all seams to have the same DNA as pressed upon them by their instructors i.e. no original works, but ones with a target towards getting a passing grade in the class and thus to graduate.
Unlike in the past, todays development budgets for a design program don't have alot of fat in them to explore "what if" consepts. You couple that and what the federal regulations says you can and can't build and you get ''safe'' but ''monarl'' designs we see today.

I guess one shouldn't be surprised after every major automobile manufacturer has established a design house in southern California, but I for one am extremely tired of the Japanese cutesy and California cowpie schools of design foisted off on us by the graduates of the Art Center School in LA. There's a limit of how many times a bird beak or caricature of an Asian man's face can be used as a design element and still seem fresh, just as throwing bovine manure against a wall and using the remains of what falls to the ground as your latest and greatest idea has a limit. I understand government safety regulations may have something to do with it, but when they destroyed the top of roof to beltline, beltline to bottom of rocker panel proportions in an attempt to make everything look like a mini SUV with a chopped roof, they lost me. And just because Asian government homeland requirements have most small cars looking like disproportionate piles of stacked boxes, doesn't mean we need to embrace the import of them worldwide.

I too, long for the time when auto designers came to the individual onsite factory design studios from other disciplines, and were encouraged to expand the envelope, attempting to break away from what the competitors doing at the time, while maintaining the individual corporate and brand identity.

i'd rather not buy the rubbish they pump out in this day and age but it could be worse. they could revive certain themes. i mean.. not that its everyone's thing but stand a 2010 vespa next to a 1950's vespa, a brand new mini next to an oldie, vw to vw, yada yada. i'm kinda glad they've left the cool stuff alone.

speaaking of which did anyone see that new car doing the circles in hotrod mags thats inspired by 57, 58 and 59 chevs. i'm sorry but *yuck*

I assume you mean from post #20. If so, it is a Buick...not sure what year, but not a production model. Note the double bubble top!
