Okay Never done this before but here goes. (be easy on me).
A friend and I got to attend the AMBR show last year because of some generous friends. We looked at the cars in awe. First time weve been there. While we checked out the vendors we came upon Keith Weesners booth. Jimmy looked at his art and the rest of the things he had for sale. He ended up buying some art from Keith and away we went. Fast forward to about 8-10 months ago. Jimmy was working on a handbuilt Hot Rod but decided it was going to take to long to finish and he wanted something to take to the Street Rod Nationals this year. He got this wild hare to build a Hot Rod to clone the weesner art he bought called the Emerald Tide. ![]() I have to tell you first off that Jimmy has got more talent than most people have got sense. He decideds to build it in bare aluminum and steel. Following is some pics that I took today and I will try to update this as he goes along. He's had most of it together and now it is blown apart and now is priming the steel interstructure and starting back together with it. The way this guy works he will probably make it (I hope). This guy is a machine. Here he is grinding the frame. All welds will be ground smooth and will look like a billet frame. His plan is to clear the frame over the bare metal to show the workmanship. ![]() ![]() Following are some pics of the steel interstructure (primed) and the aluminum skin ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The bed is made out of sheet metal ![]() ![]() Innerstructure for the doors are steel with aluminun skin ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The grill insert will have over 450 stainless bullits. ![]() Stainless bullits ![]() Battery box ![]() Here is just a couple of his tools. (he has many) Several years ago he decides to build a Yoder hammer and built this thing from scratch. I mean this guy is no slouch. Most of it is made from flat stock but he made some molds and had some pieces cast. He also sells some of his cast pieces. Center tube is filled with sand for weight and so it doesnt ring when you use it. If you didnt know you would think it is a factory made piece. ![]() ![]() I will try to keep this post up to date as he makes progress. Rick Last edited by 193257; 07-19-2009 at 09:20 PM. |

The photos of this build, must be all computer generated. This new fangled computer imaging technology is so awesome, that ever the builder guy in the photo seems to look like a real person. Just plain unbelievable.
Just joking.... As said before - WOW ! I just can not believe, the workmanship on the items pictured.

What the hell. To say he has talent is a bit of an understatement. Did he do all the sheet metal on the truck from scratch? Did he do any drawings first or just make it up as he went? That guy is unbelievable. Please don't tell me he is going to make the motor and trans. from scratch too.

No he's not making the motor and trans. It's 265 or 283 (can't remember)early small block. He did make the headers though and picking them up from the chrome plater today. He's not a HAMBER because he doesn't have time. He works his business during the day and does this of an evening. When I took the pics yesterday I told him it's gonna be close to making the Nats. He said I've still got 25 days. When he works usually his shirt tail doesn't hit his butt. He gets alot done in a short time. Rick |

Really really nice!
I think it would be even better painted like the Weezner artwork, but I can also understand not wanting to paint all that bitchin' aluminum work. Top notch stuff.

Your friend wouldn't happen to be Jim Hervatin would it? If so, he is indeed an amazing fellow. He built that double ended Yoder by himself incorproating many improvements along the way. I'll not post his contact information as per your statement about getting his approval first.
All of us have made some simple tool or modified one for a particular job but how many have started from scratch and build a machine that can rival this one. Be sure to keep this thread going and updated. Like others, I'm sitting on the edge of my seat to get more details. Frank

Holy crap that is slick as snot ... to have access to those tools and that talent... jealous.
I understand not wanting to paint, but has anyone ever considered anodizing the aluminum with a nice green? It would look fantastic and REALLY show off the metalwork to boot... I just don't know how cost effective it would be, but that's what I'm thinking.

Amazing. I wish I could have been there just to watch him work. I can't even imagine where to start on something like this. Wow is an understatement.

This guy rules! Will this truck get driven? Registered? What does his business do? Amazing tools completely complimented by awesome "vision" and talent. What a compliment to Weesner, as well.

Incredible.
Please paint it. Build photos will serve to show it unfinished (which is what a bare metal car is). If this man does not do this full time, he should reconsider.

I think your friend Jimmy is amazingly talented.I'd like to see a story on his work.It is not just average workmanship, and would be of interest to so many.I for one want to see more.So often the most deserving get the least praise.

I was somewhat distracted when I first saw the post by the huge White Castle banner. The hand built Yoder is cool but I want the banner.
I figured Brookville body with a really impressive inner structure but after re-reading all the data I'm really impressed. Forming the body from scratch with that perfect of a finished result is amazing. Alot of companies have tried to fab bodies and failed miserably due to poor finished product. What kind of time frame did it take him to fab the body? |

As far as his business he does a lot of prototype work for different companies. Usually nothing to do with metal forming though. He is also very talented at buying, rebuilding and refurbishing his own tools. You can hardly get around his shop for all the tools. His tools and everything else that compliments his tools he has made would make a thread of its own. You would be suprised . Quote:

like everyone else, love it, BUT.....if the weez drew it in colour, then I'd love to see it in colour, otherwise its not the full deal....colour is a big part of 'the look', he's nailed everything else....awesome job.

WOW! That definitely made my day! Amazing, for several reasons. I can't believe he MADE a '30-'31 cab! And that he's doing that truck, and that he's doing it that well! I'm honored and impressed. Can't wait to see more!
Keith PS. The girl might be harder to match, the auditions will have to be extensive.

One of the most talented fellows around who deserves more credit than one may offer. Great pic's and thanks for posting.
P.S.: When a person is building a rod of this calibre, no one may offer advice as to whether it should be painted or not...... If you want it in color, maybe you should "attempt" to match this build.......

Can't really be overstated how cool this build is, inspirational work, that's a hell of alot of talent you got Jimmy.
Emerald Tide, I have that print up in my office, I look it everyday. How bitchin' it is to see that little hot rod pick-up come to life. Weesner's artwork has inspired many a hot rod and bike to be built, his talent and style stand alone. This is one thread that will be worth following, thanks 193257. Not meaning to start drama on this thread and no need for any comments except by Pat Pryor but I'm curious to know exactly what was meant by this post? |

The dude built his own yoder......seriously guys I think very few of us can match that level of freakin awesome. Cant find the exact model vehicle you want to build well just buy sheet stock and pound it till it looks like the one you want only its the one some other guy drew so you cant really use all the dimensions of the original.... seriously!? This guy is for sure a ruler!

That's gotta be Jimmy Hervatin -- I met him when I lived in St. Louis and he was working out of his parent's garage. It was a 3 car deal, he'd made one bay into a paint booth and the other two were set up with sheetmetal equipment. He'd just hooked up a 3/8" pneumatic wrench too drive his bead roller, I had him roll some beads in a set of floors I was making for my '49 chevy.
He was totally laid back, no giant ego or anything. Cool to see what he's up to these days! Joe |

This thread is a perfect example of : Those that don't know have to let everyone know how good they are............ And yet those that truly know sit back, shut up and let everyone admire. My hats off to Jimmy in more ways than one.

Thanks for the reminder of how bad I really suck.
Amazing stuff- from the classic Weez art to the impeccable craftsmanship. This right here is what it's all about.

Hey Rick ,"Vents" Baker here Lou Noble and i were at Jimmies today to check out his progress on the truck. Louie was blown away and left shaking his head and babbling incoherently, I've decided to sell all my stuff and take a job as a mop boy in a porno theatre because i don't think i have enough years left to get to jimmys skill level. When he gets to the nationals he's gonna be busy!

Okay boys and girls!!!
Here's the latest since last night. Jimmy has been working feverishly this week. He has gotten the frame cleared and started putting it back together. He said he wasn't really finished grinding but he had to move on to make the nats. He also has put most of the body panels back on and is looking very good. This week he hopes to get the motor in and maybe most of the frame together. The way this guy works I'm sure he will get alot done. Here's some pics for this weeks progress. Man this is some kind of eye candy. Enjoy!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() [IMG]http://i430.photobucket.com/albums/qq21/193257/weesner%20inspired/GetAttachment3.jpg[/IM |

OK Here's the latest as of yesterday. 7/25/09. jimmy's making progress. The motor is mostly put together and in the truck. Hi picked up the headers from the platers and are on. You really need to look at the headers. There are no welds showing and look exactly like the drawing from Mr. Weesner. Jimmy built the headers and polished them himself before he took them to the chrome platers. They looked like they were plated before he had them plated. That's how nice he had them. The plater was impressed!!!
![]() ![]() The cab is sitting on the frame for the last time. ![]() ![]() Here is a pic of the gas tank on the left and the battery box on the right sitting inside the frame rails ![]() Jimmy wanted to set the bed on there for a trial fit while I was there and it looks good. He wasn't quite ready to put it on for the final time so we took it back off. ![]() ![]() He is putting the Q/C together for the last time and then under the truck. ![]() Just a shot of the headers on the motor. ![]() Just a few general shots in his shop. Maybe I'll do a thread sometime of his tooing. He said it's too messy now. Ha. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() He's making progress but has a lot to do. He said he's got about 11 or 12 days to go. It may not be completly done but will be at the nats for sure... ENJOY |

Good eye!!! Didn't know if any body would pick up on that. He made the sheet storage racks. You cant see it from that pic but to the left of the forklift is a whole rack of sheet storage. He pulls out the rack he wants lowers it to the same level as the shear and unloads the material and shears what he needs and puts the rack back in line. He really used his head when he built the racks. |

OK As of sunday night Jimmy is still making progress but murphy's law has dealt Jimmy a fit (as usual). Don't have any pics as of right now but they are coming. He's still planning on leaving wensday morning and will be there sometime wensday afternoon. He's not sure if it will make it under its own power or not yet but is bustin his butt to make it. He said it will be there one way or the other. Stay tuned and I will post pics as soon as I get them from Jimmy. (I'm out of town but he said he would email me some pics.) Thanks Rick

I've studied that painting. The exhaust pipes are one of the coolest parts of the painting. Looks like you nailed it, yours are equally awesome, nice to see 'em in real chrome

Don't know what area the truck will be in. He said he might have to bring it in on a trailer if it's not running. If he does he might have to bring it to the Hot Rod repair area just to get it in the door. Depends on how much of a stickler they will be.

Every possible comment on this one has been posted already, i just wanted to add that there arent enuff wow or amazing to match the level of his skills. I might have seen a shop pull such a build w/ a joint effort of very talented staff, but one guy doin this n his own in less than a year is totally sci-fi, regardless of the subject, then beeing inspired by a weesner drawing sends it into orbit.....oh and BTW, i'd love to see it in green

First I want to thank 193257 for making this thread, second I want to thank Jimmy for acquiring the skill set to make work like this possible. I love to see builds like this, the skill involved is out of this world. Seeing this sort of work just brings up a million questions in my head. One day I hope I can muster 10% of the skills your friend Jimmy has obtained. This is some of the best work and probably one of the best shops I have seen as far as usability and the amount of tooling. Would love to be a fly on the wall in that shop for a couple of years.
Can't wait to see more pictures of this truck. Thanks for sharing. |

this thread is like crack, no matter how hard you try to get off it you cant, and even when you do you have to come back for more.
this build is truly awe inspiring, i think every one here wants to someday have just a small amount of the skill he holds.

Sorry about being a day late and a dollar short but here's the latest. Jimmy worked way into the night on Tuesday because he had to leave on wensday and he had not fired the motor yet. He got up early on Wensday and the guy that went through the motor came over to give him a hand. The guy you see in the first pic is the guy that went through the motor along with Jimmy and his son under the dash trying to finish the wiring enough to get it up on the trailer for now. Its not quite runing and driving material yet but it will be when he gets home from the NATS. He fires the motor @ 9:00 AM on Wensday and loads it on the trailer @ 9:30 AM.
![]() On the trailer and ready to go ![]() He made it to Louisville and into the show late wensday afternoon. Hope all of you get to see this piece of talent someday. It's worth the look. Enjoy. |

OK Here's the latest. Jimmy got home from the Nats and emailed me this letter. It's his own words I just copied and pasted it.
Hello to all on the HAMB. Been a little busy here. This is the first time I have had a chance to respond to this tread. First I would like to say a great big thank you to Rick for doing this thread. It was totally his idea. And boy has he done a great job or what. Also I would like to thank the Wes for the great picture he created. His art work is just killer stuff. I would have never built a truck like this had I not seen that print of Emerald Tide. To some of the guys who said that must be Jimmy they were right. My name is Jimmy Hervatin. To all you guys and gals that left comments. I would like say thank you. I am as a amazed at the comments as you guys are at how I built the truck. Well I did make the NATS. The truck did run and I was able to drive it on and off the trailer. But that was it. The last two weeks thing didn't go quite like I had planned. Had hope to get the truck totally drivable but that didn't happen. So that's why I wasn't cruising. The next shows I am planning on going to, is the Frog Follies in Evansville and then Kansas City Goodguys. To the question am I going to paint the truck the answer is yes. I am planning on doing it over the winter and have the truck all done for spring. I will help to keep the pictures coming so you can see updates till its all done. Thanks again Jimmy the metalman |

I had a chance to look Jimmy's truck over today during the Frog Follies. As a fellow sheet metal shaper, I can appreciate the time and effort he put forth in building this work of art. This is without doubt one of the highest quality scratch built vehicles I have seen.
Very inspirational. |

I love this little truck. I stopped by Weesner's booth at the Primer Nats, lot's of creative fodder for some more art into metal transformations.

ok Finally got some new pics. Since most everyone has seen the truck together I thought I would give you some pics of how he is making some of the final pieces. Enjoy
Here is a rough casting for his air cleaners. He made the mold and then had them cast. ![]() Here he is doing the lathe work on the Air cleaners ![]() Her he is doming the top for the Air Cleaner ![]() Finished product ![]() He is making the bed boards out of 16 ga steel and will paint them white ![]() Using stainless bed strips in between the metal boards ![]() Here he is welding the outside trim together for the grill. He formed them then welded them and then polished them and had it plated ![]() Here's the outside trim with the grill insert that he made on his lazer. ![]() Here's the finished product with the 410 polished stainless bullets that all point straight forward. Because the grille has a V shape he had to machine each little bullet so they would point straight forward. Very time consuming. Not to shabby either. ![]() Also just a little bit of info. He was picked at the KC goodguys show for one of the top 100 Street Rodder Turtle Wax online contest. |

Metalwork like that shouldn't be hidden by paint, maybe a translucent green/clearcoat would do TWeesner's artwork proud, but you could still see the metal thru the paint? tt

I too am amazed at the craftsmanship of this build. What is the chance that it will be at the Pileup? I would love to spend hours just gazing at this masterpiece in person.

Remember seeing this truck on one of the show reports. Just amazing. Wish I had his work ethic, not to mention skills. What is the income producing focus of the shop? Don't see that much tooling, including lazer equipment, in too many rod shops, 'cept maybe for shops like OCC or Jesse James, where TV is involved. Just nosey I guess. Congradulations and thanks.

Hell yeah that truck would get in and Weesner will probably be there. The Chrome Czars have a website that is dedicated to the Hunnert Car Pileup so just type it in on your search engine. Here is a quick rundown. It is always the second saturday in October and it is at the Grundy county fairgrounds outside of Morris, Illinois. Friday night is downtown in Morris,IL and is nothing but rockabilly bands and hotrods and PBR. The website has all of the criteria and info.

Jimmy pm'd me. I told him absolutely he would get in. I don't know why he would think he would not. While a few rusty pieces of shit rat rods do show up, the Pileup is not about rusty, piece of shit rat rods.

I hope I am not dropping a line someone else already has and I missed but after paint how bout a photo reneactment of the weesner pic ? that would be so cool some dangerouse looking ginger leaned way over the truck finding a beach and redhead should be relatively easy but that plaid blanket and a log with a "woody" might be difficult. am just saying how cool would that be ?

I got to touch and see this truck for the first time yesterday at the Pileup. Now I like my cars to shine but this truck should remain in its raw metal form as the craftsmanship is godlike. Every little detail is like a new discovery and he isnt even done with it. If you ever get a chance to see this little truck you will understand. If he paints it,I think it wil actually lose some of its WOW factor. All of the handformed metal/aluminum work is top notch, off the chain, insane. Beautiful!!!!

I checked this thing out in person at the Pile Up. Man, it's more impressive in person than the pictures let on. The fit and finish is unbelievable. Didn't get a chance to talk to Jimmy or Rick but I had a nice chat with Jimmy's wife. She told me how long he's been working on the truck. Hard to believe a guy can get that much done in such a short time. I'll be looking for this one again. It's cool.
Thanks for posting this Rick.

Hi, I am French and I allow to congratulate you and your team on it fabulous work. Of the silversmith's trade. I am on a proget of model on Ford's base " 32 pick-up and I fell on your car by looking for an inspiration in the work of Weesner. I found. Thank you still. You can be proud, an admirer on the other side of the ocean...

i saw his creation at the hunnert car pileup. it stopped me in my tracks. i was awestruck. the man is a genius at metal forming. wait untill the airplane people discover him. he'll be building beech staggerwing wing root fairings or p-51's from the spinner on back.
heck, all he would need would be a data plaque and a V-12 merlin, he could fabricate the rest. a truly rare combination of abillity and ambition. and a gentleman, as i witnessed him politely answer ridiculous questions asked by people who didn't have a clue what was involved in producing that work of art. |

I'll get some pics next time I go up there. I know he is working on the interior panels. He's test fitting them to make sure there is enough clearence after he paints the truck. He's going to do the interior himself and also paint it himself. He really is a craftsman.

OK guys I promised a update so here it is. Jimmy is making good progress on the interior. He's actually doing all the interior panels before he paints it and then will blow it apart to paint it. Once he starts painting it he will be done with the interior. Here's a few pics to show the progress.
The headliner will be a two piece panel. The surround is a form fitting aluminum panel that fits like a glove that is of the same quality as the outside of the truck and it has an aluminum insert along with a interior light. This pic also shows the back panel behind the seat that is form fitting also. ![]() Here is the back panel behind the seat. ![]() Here a pic of the headliner with the insert in it. The side that is showing will go against the roof ![]() Here's the headliner with insert in it that is finished with green piping. ![]() The back panel with little jimmy. The slots on the sides and in the middle are for the seat belts ![]() Here's the door panels fitted to the doors. ![]() The door panels with upholstery ![]() One of the kick panels ![]() This is what it's going to look like when it's finished. You won't believe the fit and finish on every thing. ![]() ![]() Here's little Jimmy showing a visitor how to change the thread in the sewing machine. Wonder if he'll be as talented when he grows up. ![]() He's making good progress but still has a ton of work to do. He hopes to make Goodguys Indy for his first outing. Stay tuned and I will try to keep it updated a little better. |

Mr. Hervatin (Jimmy the Metalman), is there nothing you don't excel at? ... the interior panels & headliner are simply awesome! ... I can't wait to see the seats & carpet.
193257 ... thanks for the updates ... and be sure to get lots of photos of Jimmy squirting some color on the body.

What could possibly said that hasn't been? I am at a loss for words that would even begin to compliment his craftsmanship.

The equipment under one roof is unbelievable. A one stop shop, sewing, metal shaping, painting, etc.
I am inspired! How did Jimmy get to where he is, how about a short biography? What else does he do in that shop? Anything he wants right ....lol Fantastic Thread! - Mike

I have spent the last two days slobbering over this thread. I saw it mentioned in a World Of Rods magazine article. They just showed two pictures of it at the Nationals, and said they had been watching the build online. I figured it was on here some where. Man I am blown away by the quality workmanship. The man even does his own interior. I'll bet he paints it himself. Talk about envy, I wonder if I could touch him and see if any of it would rub off on me. I can't do half the shit he does. Jimmy you are the MAN!!!!!!!!!!!

Just a little update. Stopped by Jimmys the other day to check the progress. He's just about ready to tear it apart but is making a lot of little pieces that take a lot of time. Pieces like the escutions around the brake pedal and dimmer switch. You can buy these pieces but he wants to make them and plate them. Here's a pic of the dash that Mr. Weesner signed last year at the Hunnert car Pileup.
![]() Here's a couple of pics of the seat. Notice how everything lines up like the piping and the pleats. ![]() He still needs to make the trim pieces that go over the folding part when you fold the back forward. ![]() He's got just a couple of pieces left to make before he tears it apart for paint and then final assy. |

Ok Fella's Just a little update. Jimmy's finally got the interior done and here's some pics just to show how multi talented this guy is. About another week and he will be ready to blow it apart and start the bodywork and paint process which he is doing all himself. Very few people can honestly say they did it all themselves but this guy is the real deal. Enjoy

Just went through all the pages just now and like everyone else before me said, "WOW" ~ amazing work and detail! It's was cool to read that Weesner saw the car and signed the dash. As another person said earlier, it would be an awesome picture to see it shot just like the drawling with a hottie leaning across the back.... I'll be subscribing to this thread to keep an eye for the updates!

OK Boys and girls check it out. The paint is startin to fly. Went by Jimmys the other day and he was making a dolly for the cab to roll it on its back so he could paint the bottom of the floor and the firewall. He also made a rotisserie for the frame and bed to roll it over as he was working and painting it. Enjoy the pics and progress
![]() ![]() ![]() The frame, firewall and bottom of floor are painted white. ![]() ![]() The bed is on the rotissire and is next

Ok got some new photo's of Jimmy's project. He's hard at it. Trying to get all the chrome parts polished up and sent to the plater. Ya thats right he's doing all the polishing himself before he sends it to the plater. When he gets done with it it looks like its already plated but its not. The plater has got to love him and would probably like to hire him. Check it out.
![]() Here it is. All polished up and ready to go to the plater. ![]() Here he is painting the GREEN motor ![]() Ok The long awaited color. GREEN The motor and tranny are the same color as the body color. Jimmy went to great pains to get the right color green that he thought the WEEZ would be proud of. Sometimes pics dont do justice but I will tell you it looks great. ![]() ![]() I'll try to keep you posted when progress is made. Enjoy |

I´v ebeen impressed a lot of times on the HAMB. But this one tops them all, never seen anything like it. Keep the updates coming. I think Jimmy could build his own aluminum spaceship and go for a spin around the moon if he wanted to but i´m happy he´s building hot rods.

YES, I know Jimmy went to Parks College for his AP License. He worked on many business jets. No doubt, He could build his own aluminum spaceship. He really enjoys the metalshaping and creating new metal & loves the craft. He loves the hotrods &kustoms. I know he has been around cars from his teens. I can't wait until he finishes the roadster(BARE)no paint and the other projects lined up, unless he pushing them aside for another hot idea. We will have to stay tuned. What is next?

OK Just a quick upddate. Here's a sneek peek at to what it's going to look like when he get's it done The first shot is Jimmy performingw with gun in hand.
![]() This is the real deal. He's got most all of it painted. Just a couple of small pieces left and then the assembly should begin. His goal is Goodguys Indy. Now that everything is done it shouldn't be to bad to assemble time wise but you know how it is when your trying to put it together and not scratch anything. Enjoy

Been subscribed to this build from the start. Once again, a HAMB build is helping push the bar up a notch. Green and white is an incredible color combo. Very well excecuted, from just a drawing. Love the interior AND the custom made panel UNDER the dash!
![]() ![]() Will definitely need an over the top display stand if it is going to hit the show circuit. Thanks for sharing. JT p.s. just curious how much coin is tied up in this rig???

Just a quick update. I stopped by Jimmy's today (6-02-10) and he is hard at it. He has officially got exactly one week and one day. He wants to leave on thursday June 10th to debute it at Goodguys Indy. Will he make it? I hope so but he's got his work cut out . Here's a few pics. By the way He might have live woman for the photo shoot. Ha. Enjoy
Here's the nuts and bolts spread out on the floor for the assembly. ![]() ![]() ![]() The Quick change really looks good. ![]() ![]() Every thing on this truck is supper straight and supper slick. ![]() Here's a pic of one of the spinners for the hubcaps all detailed out. ![]() Here's the dash that needs to be cleared yet. Then he hopes to have the Weez sign it. ![]() If your gonna be at Goodguys Indy you owe it to yourself to check it out. Its truly amazing. |

How did I miss this one? It's incredible just how similar the proportions are. I know it can be real easy to cheat a few things when creating a car strictly for canvas or paper, but this is a true testament to designer and builder alike.

Okay Got a little update. I was at Jimmys today and this is how it looks. The cab is on and the fluids are in the motor. The motor fired right up and sounded good. Not with out a few little hiccups though. Murphys law always applies. If things can go wrong they will. Still got a tremendous amount of work to do. After all he wants to leave thursday. Thats only two days left. Hopefully the troops will show up tomorrow and give a hand. Enjoy.

OK boys and girls. Here's your daily update. Been at Jimmy's all day and although it probably doesn't look like it we got some important and very time consuming things done. First off we got the roof skin on but before that we got all the wiper mechanism in place and in working order. Then we moved on to the headliner. Man you talk about a job. You got to have about 25 hands, hold you mouth just right, and what ever you do don't fart while you trying to put in the headliner. The fit on this thing is unbelievable. Two other well known hot rodders came out to help and they worked on things like the front brakes, wired the headlights, put on the generator and a mulitude of other chores. We also got the dash in. Finally to show a little more progress we got the grill shell ready to go on. I suspect tomorrow will be a very long day since it will be the last working day. We've got a long way to go and a short time to get there but He's still planning on leaving on thursday. Hopefully everything will go good tomorrow. Just a word of warning. When you plan on looking at this thing you better wear your shades. Between the bright green paint and the white accents it will knock your eyes out. As I was taking these pics the automatic flash would not go off most of the time.Enjoy the pics.

I just spent the past two days working my way through this Thread.... Totally Awsome build. Unbelievable Craftmanship. You have hit the mark exactly with what you were trying to achieve.
It has me thinking if I should turn my build into a Weezner creation, like my Avatar.

Don't be surprised if you see it on the left coast either late this year or early next year. I know he's already been contacted about bringing it to shows this year and next. Some of which the Weez will be At.

Damn. Wish I could think of something to say about this car that hasn't been said. There are no superlatives left to describe the stunning craftsmanship.
I'm going to have to strap myself into my chair and screw the chair to the floor for when the photos of the finished hot rod are posted.

I'd probably let him piss on my shoe in the hopes that I could get a bit of that talent...truly a remarkable build. Appreciate all the pictures...can't wait to see it out in the daylight! And some left coast time would be appreciated by many, no doubt! BRT

Incredible... every last little detail about it
I don't think I really want to know what this little excercise in "what if we tried to build..." ended up costing though How does Priceless sound? ![]() Looking forward to it's final roll out...

OK Here's your daily update a day late. Didn't get home till 1.30 and was to tired to update. Got quite a bit done but still plenty to do . We got the bed on for the last time after 3 or 4 trial runs. Like I said before If it can go wrong it will. The headligts are on but not finished completely. Finally we were ready for the doors. It just takes more time than you think when you chase all the threads and clean out all the holes after the primer and paint process. Finally got the drivers door on and swingin. We called it a night and hopefully things will go smooth today. Thats right he's still going to leave thursday, I just didn't say what time. Hopefully one more update but it might be late. Enjoy the pics.

This car is just amazing. The level of craftsmanship is astounding, something for the youngsters in the hobby to aspire to achieve. Sadly (please no hitting below the belt) it also seems like a vehicle that will never be driven, never haul stuff, never have a stone chip or bug guts in the finish... in essence never to be seen outside the realms of car shows or museums. Perhaps it will also be enshirned in a 1:1 diorama that looks just like the painting?
I sure hope not. Tell me it isn't so. Gary |

I may have missed it, but what was used for the bed floor? Are they hollow composite or aluminum extrusions, or is that just an illusion?

Here's the outside trim with the grill insert that he made on his lazer.
![]() Here's the finished product with the 410 polished stainless bullets that all point straight forward. Because the grille has a V shape he had to machine each little bullet so they would point straight forward. Very time consuming. Not to shabby either. I would love to know how he clamped the bullets to machine the bottom ??? Super vacuum bullet holding mill vise?... ![]() Hans

Well Here's your update before he leaves for Indy. Ya he's gonna make it. First off I would like to thank everyone for the tremendous help this week. I know he appreciate's it very much. He's had 4 or 5 guys there everyday this week and today there has been at least 6 or 7 all day. That's what it's all about. Just shows you what kind of guy he is. Well we had a short day today I got home about 9:30-10:00 pm and about the only thing left was to put the seat bottom in it. I know I said he is leaving thursday and he could but I think he is going to get a little rest and leave in the morning, which is probably a wise thing to do. Got the right side door on and all the hardware in both doors today along with the tailgate. Got all the door panels on and the rest of the interior and man it fits like a glove. Got to get some rest as I am leaving for Indy in the morning also. Enjoy the pics.
![]() ![]() Here's a pic of the Yoder Hammer that he built. Ya that's right he built it. A lot of the panels for this truck were made on this hammer. ![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks to Debbie, his wife for all the lunches and suppers. I don't think any of us lost any weight. ![]() Jim, put a hat on man. (just kiddin)

This thing is just gonna be perfect. I doubt there will ever be one negative word said about it. It's just so right.. nothing over the top... not one extra do-dad, no extra rows of louvers, or holes, or layers of milled rings, or flying eyeballs, or funny fur... not one extra bell or whistle. Very inspiring. And that's without saying anything about the insane level of craftsmanship in the car. I just hope I get to see it one day in the flesh. Gary

Damn. Dammit. Cain't wait to see this in Rodders Journal, they will show it to its best advantage. Nothing personal to the HAMB, but with the magazine I can lay on my back on the futon and dream better than I can sitting in front of the computer.

This seems to have been created in much the same way that a big company (GM, Porsche, Ferrari,...) creates a car, Weezner being the styling studio, Mr. Hervatin the production works, only instead of the design features being steadily toned down, it's all there.
I don't remember ever seeing a work of art manifest in the physical world quite as perfectly as this one. Masterpiece, tour de force - someone has the superlatives to do justice to this, I don't.

It was badass!!!!!! I knew it was the "Weesner" truck in Indy when I was walking up to it. I was so pumped to see it finished. I wish I could've gotten some good pics of it but there was a swarm of people around it the whole time, for obvious reasons. It is put together very, very well!!! Looks killer, wish it would've been the HROTY!! Way to go and I couldn't think of anything better for an artist to have someone build something they have drawn. Just plain AWESOME!!

Somehow this truck (which in my opinion is the nicest hot rod truck I've ever seen) Only won the Good Guys Gazzette pick @ Indy it didnt win any pros picks! How the hell can that be? Anyway Jim's truck has the entire package in a word.... Perfect

I didn't make it to Indy, but I find it hard to believe that there could have been anything there that would have been any better. Haven't even seen this thing in person since the Pile Up. It looked really freakin' nice in October!

Ya know, there are always those rumors that the awards are pretty much selected before hand. They probably get started by those who don't win and thought they should - a sour grapes kinda thing - but in this case it really makes you wonder. How the heck do you get a parking place behind the wall anyway? Gary

I think its more likely that the pros that picked the awards didnt realize what they were actually looking at. I cant imagine that they knew this was a home built aluminum body and still not give it a Pros pick. The Good Guys staff reconized it for what it was just not the "Pros" Either way Jim seems like a really cool and humble guy and that truck IS PERFECTION

It also appears that Jimmy didn't participate in the "Hot Rod of the Year" competition (so a "HROTY" award was out of the question as well). I'm also pretty sure the KIRK! (& the rest of the Gazette staff) would take exception to your characterization that the truck "Only" won a GG Gazzette award (& subsequent feature in the magazine). I'm thinkin' that that Jimmy actually gets it ... that Hot rodding is not about awards, but rather about hanging out with friends and cars ... I'd bet Jimmy appreciates all the accolades he's gotten from his peers [in person and/or on Internet forums (e.g. this HAMB thread)] much more than "winning" some billet trophy that will just collect dust on a shelf.

Hemi32 Maybe I could have chosen my words better. I know Kirk and the Staff do a great job. I just thought it deserved whatever the highest award they could give it and then some and I still do.

I believe you guys are right. Jimmy does get it. Jimmy did want to participate in the HROTY but it just wasn't in the cards. Things just didn't cooperate. When I left Jimmys on thursday night it looked like all he had to do was put the seat bottom in but he found out that the trans didn't shift exactly right and needed a couple of adjustments. Got that fixed and then the generator decided not to gen Got that fixed and before you know it it was 10:00 to 11:00 am on friday before he could leave.
A friend of mine brought up an interesting thought. He said Jimmy really raised the bar as far as builders go. Stop and think about it! How many people can say that they did the complete build theirself. I'm talkin build the complete body from scratch, Then do the body work and paint and to top it off he did the upholstery. He also did all the buffing for all the chrome work and then had it plated. Next time you get to look at this truck check out all the little trim pieces like around the shifter boot, trim pieces on the lower front edge of the doors, the sill plates around the carpet edges, the trim piece around the emergency brake boot. All this he made and then buffed and then had plated. A lot of things get over looked until someone points it out. It's like Jack Stirnemann said. He really is from another planet. All this and if you ever talk to him he's just a regular guy. Theirs a lot to be said for that. I do know that goodguys shot it for a future feature and he has had all kinds of interest from people wanting him to make appearances with the WEEZ. Quote:

The "Builder's Choice" awards were chosen by Troy Trepanier and it's hard to narrow 200 worthy cars down to ten, and no one will ever agree with your ten. The truck was amazing in bare metal, and just plain astounding with paint!

He'd have been right up there I'm sure. He'll be a real contender next year, plus a real contender for Truck of the Year in Des Moines.

I spent a few minutes talking to Jimmy on Saturday and you would never guess from his demeanor that he is such a gifted craftsman. He seemed truly excited when I mentioned that I had followed the build on here.

Glad you made it though. Did anyone take pics?Plowboy, you were right! The swap did suck, but true to your prediction, I actually did buy a '36 and a 38 hub cap.

Ricks right. Thursday night he held a seat belt trim piece up and said how you would usually think this was a piece from a parts supplier and then you notice the fit and finnish is way to nice! Jimmy made 'em. They kept saying how the pieces Jimmy made all fit perfectly and what few things were store bought needed a little tune up. I had not thought about how lucky we are to live close to a talent like Jimmy where we can see something like this being made...especially by someone so skilled but so laid back and modest. As far as awards and trophies go in my opinion nothing is cooler than pumping gas at one or two in the morning and have some total stranger say "nice truck"

I'll do Des Moines GG just to see this truck. It's a 'lock' cover car for TRJ!

Hello to both 123257 and Jimmy. I would like to add some sort of comment that nobody else has already written, but I am speechless first with the skill etc that Jimmy has and also you,123257 for bringing this thread to us,thankyou both. I have joined this site as when I found this thread,I wanted so much to be a part of it with my humble encouragement and I am very pleased with all the awesome comments that have appeared on here. Only one sort of negative question I spotted was if the truck would ever be driven and I thought wow,if that person had being reading and looking at all the posts, that person should of seen colouring on the exhaust headers that did not appear without hot exhaust following through those tubes. Thanks again for bringing this build to us..
Cheers Whiplash. |

Huh? Why? I'd rather imagine that people will dig it forever and keep it somewhere it doesn't get fucked up.

Just wanted to say I got a chance to see this truck in person in Columbus this weekend, and it's even cooler in real life than in this thread! Met Jimmy, and he's just about the most humble and easy going guy I've ever met. I almost couldn't even believe he was the guy who built it, as I'd expect someone with that much sheer talent and skill to have at least a *little* bit of an ego, but he doesn't...he saw my HAMB t shirt and asked if I had seen this thread here, which of course I have been following since the beginning. He showed me around the truck and answered a few questions I had about how he did a few things, and was super nice. EVERY inch of this thing is perfect, body, engine, interior, etc... I actually came back over to see it about 3 times... such a cool truck, and an amazing build by a super cool guy. -Joe

Met Jimmy and his wife at the Lead Sled Spectactular in Salina this past weekend........and WOW..what some workmanship!! And as a bonus, he , his wife, and son are some great people. Found out during our conversation that he and I have common friends from my hometown and that his wife is from a Tennessee town 30 miles from me!! Small world sometimes...if you get a chance to see this truck, be sure to look at the build photos to really get the picture on how awesome his workmanship is. The common onlooker will never know the truck is totally hand built and is aluminum........I kinda wished he'd never painted it because then everyone could appreciate the workmanship more....but he owns it and BUILT it so that's his choice. I've known some hellacious metal men in my time (thru vintage Indy cars)...........but this guy has to be at the top of the list! And it don't hurt a damn thing that he's from the great state of Missouri..................

Jim, Debbie, and Jimmy are good people. I've enjoyed seeing them the past few weekends around the shows. Little Jimmy is such a hoot, too cute!
And since I'm not a redhead I think Christina would make an excellent choice! Mad Men is the ONLY show I watch on tv! |

Great idea!!! Jimmy said let's get it done. Anyone have info on how to go about it would help? It would be so great to sell the prints and auction them off for the Hamb. I know a lot of people would love to have one with the model to go next to the weez print of Emerald Tide for sure.
