Bugattis at the Schlumpf collection - lots of photos.
I was down at the Schlumpf collection in Mülhouse at the weekend and took a lot of pictures. Fascinating place and well worth a visit.
Hopefully nobody will call OT on this thread - these really are some beautiful old race and road cars and it was fantastic to be able to get up close(ish) and check out the design and engineering. Itīd be good to see some of old Monsieur Bugattis ideas turn up on hot rods - after all, his stuff always seemed to work pretty well for him - he must have been doing something right.  Art Deco/Nouveau/Psycho mascots from the collection...    Bugattis...    ...lots of Bugattis....   The "Tank"...  Bear with me, itīll take a while to post these...

  Mathis with a 12 litre four banger!  So you thought T coupes looked a little strange...?  1923 Amilcar. Note the Hallock like screen.  Ferrari 250 LM for Ryan...

Sorry about the pictures - they donīt make it easy to photograph anything.       Alfa Romeos. Huge things these were...  Gordinis...

Motors...
Bugatti straight eight.  Matra V12    Huge Panhard record car...  More Panhards. Real Sci Fi cars these are...    French mini Merc - a V8 60 powered Vedette.

I recently read a story in a 2008 Automobile Quarterly about this collection. I have seen other stories about the place as well. Fantastic cars and good stories.

More blue cars...
   Another Alfa.  Colossal Esders Royale roadster. 18ī long, 12.7 litre motor and 24" alloy wheels and very little interior space.  This is sort of a replica, made from various left over parts and an engine that had been used in a train! (Bugatti used up unsold Royale parts in trains). It was never fitted with headlights. He didnīt want to drive it at night. So he didnīt! And here are few pictures for those of you wanting to build your own Bugatti! There was a stripped down Atalante coupe in the lobby, so I took the opportunity to show you how they were put together. (My camera battery karked it at this point, so that was it!) Wonderful straight eight engine. This would push the car to over 100mph in the early thirties.Notice the very deep section chassis and hefty looking engine mounts.  Separate aluminium covered wooden firewall and very large rear engine mount that goes right around the gearbox. This isnīt ever going to flex!  Beautiful finned differential housing and the chassis gets even thicker at the back end so that the axle can pass through it. The rear springs are quarter elliptics that come forwards from the rear "spreader bar" and sideways movement is kept in check with friction shocks. Hopefully you can make it out on the second picture (though thats a different car - with chain drive). Interesting setup that Iīve never seen on a rod.    So there you are! Its a must see.

i just finished reading about some alfa race car from the late 20 with an ohv 6 that produced something like 125 hp. i love european race cars from the 1920 to late 1960 most of the people building them were as much hotrodders as anyone over here. same passion for going fast. just look at good ol Enzo building street cars to make money to go race thats what i think it was all about. dont worry the pictures look great, i mean how could you take a bad picture of the purest art there is.

These are the headlamps I'm fitting to my Model A ,Marchal Aerolux.I believe they were fitted to the '36 or '37 Atalante Type 57C.Maybe other makes as well. |

WOW!!!! Just.... WOW!!!! Thank you for posting this!!!! I find all of this stuff very inspirational from not only a craftsmanship aspect but from an engineering aspect! Beautifully engineered! As craftsman of our own vehicles, there are just a ton of details in these cars we would should be paying attention to.
