Is it still legal to have any type of exhaust system for a truck? I remember having glass packs on a pickup truck and did get pulled over a few times. The cops warned me that my exhaust system was too loud, but couldn't give me a ticket.
Well anyways, I love your build. Especially jigging up and welding up the frame on that big metal table.
It's built strong and safe. Great job!

I doubt much of anything is legal on my truck! But so far so good I haven't been messed with yet. I really do need to try and quiet it down. I would be nice to able to talk to the passenger every once in awhile.

Thanks, You're absolutely right my chassis is overkilled. The guy that built my cage is always busting my balls on how I overbuilt it. I guess if it's too heavy I'll just have to make more power.

Hey Matt,
Just curious how the truck has been coming along since the tear down over the winter.

Well Brian, it hasn't been the smoothest sailing this year.

First my radiators in the bed only keep the motor cool until about 70. Anything hotter then that and the temp would shoot up. Until I stopped at a light, then it would start coming down. So that tells me, I don't have enough airflow. I figure I need to build some kind of air scoops. I don't want to be building in the middle of the summer so I put the front radiator back in. So now I have all 3 hooked up. I don't have any cooling problems now!

So I get drive the truck around town a few times after I put the radiator back in and everything is good. I decide to drive it to the Gasser Reunion at Thompson which is about a 15 mile drive. I make it about 3/4 of the way there and I start dropping cylinders. I kill it and pull over. I have fuel and spark, so I try to fire it again. It's back firing through the carbs and won't idle. At this point it's time to tow it home.

To make a long story short, the motor ate a roller lifter. So it's out and at my motor guy. I plan on having it back here soon though. Hopefully I'll be tearing up the streets again soon!

Sorry to hear you had to take her apart...was that a solid or hyd roller and do you have a lead on why it came apart?

Good luck getting her back together, she is one bad mo-fo.

Damn, sorry to hear that. I was hoping you would post that the truck was done, painted, and you had no time to post because you were tearing up the streets.

It's a solid. One reason maybe that I didn't loosen the rockers after the season was over.(I didn't realize I needed too) Possibly that valve was open and had all the spring pressure on it all winter. The other guess is that running a solid roller on the street isn't very reliable. We're going to try a couple of different things like , milling an oiling groove in them, to help with the low RPM lubrication issue. We're also going to try a different brand of lifters. The owner of the shop where my motor guy works runs a BBC with a solid roller on the street, he was eating up lifters too. He switched to this brand lifter and has had much better luck. Sorry I can't remember the name. I remember the price though!

Next winter, for piece of mind. I plan on just pulling them out and letting them soak in oil.

I reality the only part that sucks is I was planning on changing them out at the end of the season anyway. I don't want to be down a whole month in the middle of summer.

If it was easy everybody would do it, right?!

Thanks, one these years I'm planning on making it to GoodGuys in C-bus.

Damn it I wish. Paint's overrated anyway!

PS I talked to my motor guy today. He said he should be able to get on it next week. I would love to be beating on this again by next weekend!

Damn Mat - that sucks.

I have never heard of releasing solid roller lifters either. If that's the cause that would be a great tech. I'm sure you'll know more about them than you ever wanted.

Good luck on a speedy engine recovery.

Me either but I'll be the first to admit I'm not a motor guy. What better way to learn about anything, right?

Mark, I can't remember right now, but I do know it says the "Green Oil" on the bottle. Like I said I'm no expert on motors and run what my motor guy gives me. The cam and lifters are Comp. What do you run in your motors? How many miles do you put on a set before you change them out? From what I'm reading between 5000-7000 miles. And you're 100% right about being cheap. But I thought I was cheap everywhere else in my life so I could spend more money on my truck. At least that's what my wife tells me.

On my 55 with a BIG solid roller, I just turn the motor over once a week to make sure a single spring doesn't get killed. So far so good.

Comp now makes a pressure oiled solid roller lifter that should be more durable on the street than the old style. Isky also makes a pressure lubed lifter and they are kinda pricey. Also I have a bIg comp hyd roller cam and lifters for a bbc I'm gonna sell, I think it's a 304 magnum. I decided to go with a solid roller to rev a little higher with my little big block. Badass truck you have there, and look at my sig when folks say you over built your chassis.

Flowers what are flowers?! Cam Motion, I'll check them out. I could be wrong but isn't the low RPM that kills solid rollers? I'm running 3:50 gears and 30" tires. I'm only spinning about 2500 at 60. Thanks for the tip on the oil.

I'm definitely going to look into these. I thought about a hydraulic roller, but I like to spin this thing. From what I've heard hydraulics are only good 6500 max?

Thanks for all the advice guys.
