Nice pictorial! Back in the day, everybody that was into performance drove a Pontiac. Sad day indeed. RIP PMD!

the good old days ... go to the junkyard and pick up another GTO posi rear. had a 69 Gran Prix also. love the torque of those 400's. |

No pics to post but I've had my share. Unfortunately none were HAMB friendly but always had a great time and loved em. 67 Lemans, 2--68 Firebirds, 69 Firebird, 91 Firebird, 67 Catalina and a 71 Model J Grand Prix.Trying to get my hands a 60 Catalina 2 door hardtop and the same guy has a 67 Bonne. with a 421. Both been sittin for years but all there. But lets face as much as we loved em they haven't really built one at least in my eyes since the last Pontiac engine was built. Gonna miss em but it's up to us to find them, bring them back and love em

I'd love to have another Bonneville ragtop!!! I've owned a '66, '67, and a '68 (yeah, i know, HAMB-unfriendly, so what!) and loved all three of them!
A '60 Bonnie, or a '60 wagon would be awesome! There is a '60 Laurentian wagon here on the HAMB for sale, but I'm a tad shy on the funds right now!

Guess i'll contribute, even the new pontiacs aren't half bad, even though half of their parts are metric. I still have an '02 Grand Prix. No problems yet at 91K

No pictures, but it's only Poncho power for my '40 Plymouth drag car...413 cu in, 10:1 compression, fenderwell headers, it sounds like the apocalypse and eats SBC's for breakfast, Dodges for lunch and Fords for dinner...

Just thinking how many I've had now.
'70 Gran Prix, 400, 4-speed and a posi (my dad's, but I drove it to high school) '60 Catalina 4dr (and a '59 Star Chief parts car) '72 Bonneville 4dr, 455. drove until the frame broke '72 Grand Ville 4dr, 455, replaced the Bonne '72 Grand Ville 2dr, intended to put the 455 in it since someone else robbed it of it's own '73 Grand Ville 2dr, got boned when I put that in storage, another 455 car Plus stuff I picked up just to hang onto - '57 Chieftain 4dr, super solid for like $100; '64 Gran Prix I parted out last year (bad frame), '55 and '56 Safaris in rough shape I parted out (sold the tops right off them), '62 Catalina with no motor and '65 LeMans buckets I could have had free and was never able to haul home.. there's probably others I can't remember too.

"I wanna see a 37 pontiac."
This isn't a great shot of my 37 C-dan because all the parts are stored inside the car. I sold the car but have full rights to buy it back if I want to.. Last edited by Rocky; 05-03-2009 at 03:15 PM. |

Thanks guys.........My deceased father was a Pontiac salesman his whole adult life. Those old sales brochures brought back some wonderful memories. Dad had a '58 Bonneville convertible, fuel injection, air ride, white exterior with red cove. ( same interior combo) I was 12 at the time that car & times are indelibly imprinted in my brain!!!

and so it is written...
"on the 6th day at the very conception of time the Almighty hizself created and thus cast upon the earth an evil wind eminating from the great indian burial ground nestled deep in the bowels of a place that from this day forth shall be called "The Badlands" it waz then that the great indian chief shook the lands with all of his spirtual powers snd from out of the fire and ashes it waz created...the now infamus PONTIAC powered 31 Ford coupe known as "She & I " The legend as passed down from each great chief "She & I " born in the Badlands revised in a nightmare. The Pontiac gods from this day forth will cast a smile as the earth shall shake rattle & roll! This shall only end on the very last day of created time" just me... Pontiac Slim |

Okay, not really 100% poncho, but has dash, steering wheel and 389 motor from a 1959 Star Chief; roof insert is the Pontiac's hood run backwards. For extra Pontiacity, note the grill ornament.

The first tunnel ram intake (known as a 'bathtub' intake), brought to you by none other than the engineers at Pontiac in 1963 for doing battle in the 'stocker wars'. These came on the 410 HP 13:1-compression 421 Super Duty engines, equipped with two NASCAR 750 Carter AFB carbs. I doubt they had only 410 HP.
![]() ![]() Another 421 SD engine, a 405 HP 12:1-compression engine with a low-rise 2X4 intake. ![]() A rare reproduction of the 'bathtub' tunnel ram intake. ![]() ![]() ![]() The 'bathtub' repro intake pictured above was produced by the late Dave Johnson, a hard-core Pontiac racer to the end. Dave was a truly dedicated Pontiac drag racer who put forth the effort to cast up his own intake for Nostalgia Super Stock competition. Dave's '63 'White Warrior' Tempest race car is pictured below, he ran the car with both a V8 and a 4-banger Tempest engine (right cylinder bank of a 389). Car’s Best Time: 8.95 ET Seconds at 149.6 mph (with 442 CI Iron Block V8) Minimum Weight with driver: 3,000 lbs. Car’s Best Time: 11.65 ET Seconds at 111.48 mph (with 206 CI Iron Block I4) Weight with driver: 2,710 lbs ![]() Long live Pontiac, and the folks who made them into the true performance cars we all know and love!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Cool thread--I'll make a picture contribution tomorrow(my 60 Catalina)
There was a neat piece today in the Tennessean newspaper about folks with Pontiac love affairs---one in particular was a guy whose dad carried him home from the hospital after he was born in the family GTO(66, I think) Now, 35 years later, the son is planning to drive HIS son home(due next month) in the SAME GTO. ![]() How cool is that for family legacy?

No pics to share, but started with a 62 Tempest LeMans, 4 spd, 4 cyl, 4 barrel. What a combo! Couldn't keep a trans-axel in it, but that's what high school was for.
Then a 62 GrandPrix, 389 tripower, auto but we converted it to a 4 speed. Finally a 65 GTO, tripower, big cam, 4 spd, but the guy before me put a sraight axel in it. If I had cared, probably really shot the hell out of the resale value ![]() Helped a little that my dad was a Pontiac dealer, back in the day. They will be missed, well except for that Aztec model! |

With todays econonmy and GM's corporate leadership it only makes sense "THEY" would see fit to do away with their more affordable line and keep the Higher priced stuff. RIP PMD!

That black Firebird from "Corvette Summer" has to be the best bad guy car of all time, I loved that chase scene at the end. I hated it when he blew it up

I growed up playing in a 40 Pontiac coupe my dad had. It had 11,000 miles on it with the original air in its tires! It was mint. The wild thing about it was that it had a full leather interior and according to pontiac they only made about 12 or so like that. Its in a museum somewhere last I heard.

car they showed. I distinctly remember the T/A-Formula hood. Further more, you could clearly see that James Garner did most of his own driving. He (now 81), Newman and McQueen were the cool ones. If it was on chips, the shows were probably swapping footage and props. Man was I a Trans Am freak when I was a kid. I have more old sketches of them than any other make or model. I since done seen the light but a H.O., white on blue with low back buckets (parchment&black)1970-71 T/A is still a flittering dream of mine..... ![]() ![]()

It is sad, always had a soft spot for the Poncho line. I'll post a pic of the '63 GP tonight (none on this 'puter). Meanwhile here is a shot of one of the wheels. Gotta love the old 8 lugs.
Car pic added...

I haven't owned a Poncho in years, but I admit it was a big punch in the gut to hear they're done for. My first car was a 69 Executive we all called Moby Dick. Big, long and white. FIrst car I ever caught air in, first engine I ever tore into, first time I ever got laid in a back seat (one of the few cars that I could actually pull that off in with even a modicum of grace too.) The car was sold off cheap to a guy who wanted to use it in a demo derby (good choice) and the back seat I turned into a bench and have been dragging around the country with me for years. Loved that car. Still have good memories to this day chilling in the garage, sitting on that bench seat and reminiscing how various love stains got there and with whom.

Here's a barn shot of my Judge right before I bought it from the 3rd owner. The best part is it was pretty easy to find the history on it since the first owner was my old man!

A buddy of mine has/had a '701.5 Formula in this Avocado green. The car was mint and an original, all California car. He let a buddy take car of it and take care of it he did.
I thought Martin had more sense than this but, apparently, it was left to rot in a field the last several years, a wet field. That car was nearly perfect when I moved on 2001. Worst part, it could have been mine for at or under $3000.00. Even the color looks good at that price.

Here are a few shots of my Poncho's. I've had at least one Pontiac in the driveway since I got my license. The count is up to eight now! The latest is a '09 G8 GT, great car, it's a shame they are getting axed now they were showing signs of turning around. Long live the Chief of Sixes!

Here's a small sampling of Pontiac Ads that scroll as my screen saver. How do you tell a tiger from a pussycat? They really must have had a great ad agent in the '60's...

Almost every car I've ever owned has been a Pontiac. Started with a '40 coupe flathead 6 when i was 15 and continued with a '61 Tempest 4-door, '54 straight 8 4-door, '63 Bonneville 2-door hardtop, '69 Custom S, '70 1/2 Firebird Formula 400 4-speed, '64 GTO tri-power 4-speed,'64 LeMans, '55 2-door sedan, '59 Bonneville Sport Coupe (bought in 1977 and still own), '66 2+2 conv. 421 tri-power automatic, two '69 Trans Ams, '84 6000STE, '66 LeMans, '61 Catalina 2-door hardtop 4-speed, '86 6000 S/E, '86 Fiero S/E, '94 Grand Am coupe, '97 Montana, and my current hot rod project '31 Pontiac rumbleseat coupe. Also collect (as money permits) vintage Pontiac memorabilia. To me, Pontiac always had an attitude that was reflected in its cars AND its advertising until the ' General ' ripped the rug out from under them and would not let them build the type of cars that made them great (pressure from Chevy perhaps?). Not happy at all to see them go but will enjoy Pontiac cars and memories forever!

My old '62 Pontiac LeMans Tempest convertible...194.5 ci Slant Four, auto, AM, heater, power top, and that's about it! Sold it to HAMBer Guthriesmith about two years ago. Cool project car! Another Pontiac ragtop I owned, besides the three Bonneville rags I mentioned before.
I've always said that if I had not grown up as a Mopar guy, I'd have been a Pontiac fanatic, instead! I've also owned a '70 Firebird, '64 Tempest, and a '65 Catalina coupe.

Newbie post. Couldn't help wanting to show a few (Pontiacs) I have owned and my current ride - the 63 Catalina - on this great thread. Yes, I married the woman in the 79 TA (and still am, 30 years later). Pontiacs rule (or at least used to)!

First pass in June 1966 @ Irwindale within days of purchase. 389 3x2, 4 speed, Posi, Tyree Headers, tow tabs and battery mounted in trunk I was in heaven. Finally owned a "Poncho" that would hold its own on the streets or strip, honeymoon ended when Uncle Sam stepped in 8 months later. 43 years later putting together a '61 Ventura 455 3x2, we never really grow up.

Back in 1971 I have a 62 Pontiac Catalina and that was a damn good cruising car . Put a 389 in it and it ran great ! Nice and big with plenty of room to "Neck in & .....well you get the idea " !

hey guys. Pontiac didn't die this week...or next year. Pontiac died in 1981. that was the last year of the Pontiac V-8. With the motor gone, so went its identity. After 1981, a Pontiac was a chebby with its chebby motor.
Pontiac and GM deserves what it got. They built one ugly piece of crap after another. They could not get anything right. This is the last nail in the coffin and it should have happened over 20 years back. After building up a few generations of Pontiac loyalists, PMD and GM pissed on them. dropped our favorite motor. then even scrapped out the tooling for any future parts. I say piss on Pontiac and piss on GM. after 1981, it was all 'corporate nonsense'. in 1981 I promised myself to NEVER , Ever buy a new GM car because of this 'corporate nonsense'. Screw GM, screw todays Pontiac I am very glad it is finally over, it is well deserved. i am sorry for those who will loose their jobs though. I support and promote REAL Pontiacs only. What a damm shame those SOBs killing off my motor in '81. fortunately, the aftermarket has made the Pontiac V-8 better than Pontiac ever did. and more trick parts are on the way too! AMEN. No, the Pontiac V-8 motor is not dead, it is alive and well! the Pontiac 'badge' in dead on the assembly line. who gives a crap about the junk they built over the last few decades anyway? some do but, not the real Pontiac guys. As for me, I'll continue to drive and build and race nothing but REAL Pontiacs for as long as I live. I don't need no freakin' late model. Steve Barcak www.pontiacheaven.org

This really sucks! I've had a bunch of 'em & grew up with Pontiacs. At least one has been in the garage since the day I was born.
'63 GP '69 GP SJ '69 Judge '72 GP J '71 GP SJ '79 TA '67 400/4spd 'Bird '68 400/4spd 'Bird (2) '69 400/Auto 'Birds '69 400/4spd 'Bird & my current '64 GTO 455/tri-power/4spd They were THE performance division for GM! Why the hell would they keep two truck lines that are virtually identical (GMC/Chevy) & ditch Pontiac! Unreal! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

We had lots of pontiacs in my family. My dad had a 64 Catalina (we came to CA in it 1964 via rte 66) a 68 Executive and a 71 Lemans. Sister had a 70 Firebird W/6cyl traded it in for a 71 Firebird Formula 400. I had a 50 Chieftan, a 50 Sedan Delivery and 56 Safari. All were great cars wish they were stiil around
. Pics of a couple of mine.

I love pontiacs. My dad was a Pontiac freak and I learned to love them too. I wish I had pics of all my pontiacs I've owned. All I can find right now is a pic of my old 70 Firebird which was my most recent Pontiac. I have owned about 10 Pontiacs ranging in years 1964 - 1970
![]() Here are a few old pics of my Dads 67 GTO Drag car. First one is at Famoso Raceway not long after he got it in the mid 80s. The other one is mid 90s It was a little prettier and faster by then. God I miss that car...and my Dad too ![]() ![]()

A buddy of mine pointed me to this thread (and I have since posted a little earlier in it with some pics of my past and current Pontiac - black 63 Catalina). I got to digging and found an old picture of my buddies 64 Catalina 2+2 from back in our high school days (late 70's). I scanned it for you all to see. He still owns this tri-power four speed gem but no longer sports the "fro" hair
He still drives it, to this day, like it was ment to be driven...

My soft spot for Pontiac started when I was 17 and bought a 4 speed, tri-power '66 GTO for $600. The engine was shot, so in went a 421. You could burn up a set of tires in no time. Those were the days.

Oh Lord, were to begin... I've been a Pontiac freak since I was a kid in the 70's. My dad had a 74 Firebird that was a blast to ride in!
I brought my second and third kid home from the hospital in my 68 LeMans. My first car was a 76 455 4spd Trans Am. I've owned: 1976 Trans Am 455 4spd. 1977 Trans Am 400 AT 1988 Trans Am 1968 Firebird 455 4spd 1968 LeMans 455 At 2002 Grand Am 1976 Trans Am 400 AT 1971 Firebird Esprit--> Trans Am clonification Pro-Touring build 1968 Firebird- Wife's car (basket case) Big money pit. and... My newest trinket- a 1937 IHC D2 pickup. Guess what kind of engine it's getting?? Hmmmmmm...... I think I hear wardrums beating.... I guess I'm just slightly addicted. |

PONCHOS! Now if I was't so involved with Chevrolet cars & parts, I'd be a Pontiac man....without a doubt. They built some of the prettiest and neatest cars of ANY of the auto-makers. But....what I really admire about them is the fact that they had the balls to build things, and even sneak things out, when many people considered performance (and musclecars) dead. Aluminum front end Super Duty 421 Catalina factory drag cars and even the famous Swiss-Cheese frame cars, now that was a wild idea. Many of those factory-built lightweight Super Dutys had build dates after the famous GM racing ban of mid-1963, but they built 'em anyway! How about those 12 (or 14) 1963 Super Duty 421 Tempests? That's possibly the wildest, neatest car ever produced during the musclecar era. Multiple-carbed GTO's (you couldn't get that on a Chevelle!), over the counter Ram Air V's, the large rear spoiler that is standard on all '70 Trans Ams required a very special COPO option code by the Chevrolet Division before it could even be fitted onto '70 Camaros for road racing, the infamous 1973-74 Super Duty 455 'Birds, one of the fastest, most impressive Musclecars ever made, never mind the fact that everybody else gave up two years earlier. You could still get a 455 in 1976 Trans Ams, even though Z-28's weren't even produced that year and 454's had gone extinct in Corvettes two years earlier in '74. Now, not everything they did was successful, but you gotta give them kudos for having the balls to try: the rear-engined Fieros, those ugly Aztek vans, the 2004-2006 GTO's (great cars actually). I realize that I've gotten into talking about newer iron that not real HAMB-friendly and for that I'm sorry, but please just show a little respect for the dead. (Bow head now).

well said! too bad the transmissions (especially the slim jims) didn't hold up, i think that's why we don't see as many pontiacs as chevys of the same era. you can't hurt those iron 'glides, but good luck finding someone to even look at a hydro...

Also what other engine can propell a 3810 lb car to mid 12 second blasts with a $999 rebuild and $300 head grind which included new valve springs but no portwork with a stock TH350 and 3:73 gears. A Pontiac 400. My car does 12.56s at a measley 106 mph in the 1/4 and does 1.67 seconds 0-60 ft. Who says Pontiacs are expensive to build. As far as reliability, I've been beating on the same engine since 1991 and it still runs as good as it did when it was built. It also never gets past 175 degs in summer traffic and runs on pump gas.
Love them!!! Love the interchangability of parts, and like how they designed an engine that never had a different outside dimension. Thats why there are no big block or small block Pontiacs. The only difference was big journal and small journal mains. they were cast internally different as you cant bore and stroke a 326 block and make it a 455 as the cylinder walls on the smaller cubes were not as thick to be able to bore as big. But you can now buy stroker kits to turn a 400 into a 467 cid block. All for about $1500 fully balanced. How sweet is that. Pontiacs are alive and kicking and are kicking some butt in the process. I believe there is a guy on the erformance years that has won the fastest legat street car on pump gas a couple years ago. His car broke a sprag in last years event. All the aftermarket companies stepping up in the last few years is just amazing also with kaufman aluminum heads, Tiger heads, Canted valve heads, Edelbrock heads, and Ace brewer at Pacific Performance racing keeps making some great producks such as intakes, windage trays, etc etc. Also They are making Tri Power intakes, Dual quads, and alot of great 4 bbl intakes. It couldn't be a better time for pontiacs!!!!! I'm loving it as I have 3 68 Birds and about 7 engines. But I am using a Desoto Hemi for my Whippet hotrod. |

my 52 before the body came off, and my newly aquired 53. I actually fired up the 53 today, probably the first time in 20 years, and it purred like a kitten.

How about the mid - late 60's when the base model 6 cylinder was an OHC beast making more power than a stock 327 V-8!!!

I've got my hands on a few and I'm currently rebuilding one... the factory redline was 6700 and from talking to guys that currently race them the stock 7 main bottom end will handle 600 horse reliably! Not bad for a base model 6 banger!!!

The Canadian Pontiacs (which were used in Canada and sold in Australia) were a mix of Pontiac body & interior and a full size Chevy chassis (X-frame, non-WideTrack, etc.). Enjoy that Bonneville Vista Hardtop, mate!!

But didn't Canadian Pontiacs carry different model names than American built ones? I remember 'Pariseinne' (sp) instead of Catalina, Beaumont instead of Lemans, etc.

I want to know if Gm accepted the investment groups offer. Maybe they would have the balls too put out a 2010 Firebird/ Trans am I would buy one if it looked like the 77-78 front end concept.
My dad is a die hard pontiac head he has had a 73 grand prix it seems like forever since the mid seventy I think. One was root beer brown with gold strips and a medium light blue sj with a 455 that he took out and put a 400 in. I think Im going to steal the 455 shhhhh lol. He had a 75 firebrid esprit that my older brother wrapped around a tree ( he's alright the car not so much ). A 77 trans am with a 400 ( man it was quick) he sold to my uncle, who ran it into the ground. I tried to get it back but he sold it to my aunts boyfriend. We are buying a 77 firebird now Last edited by TheBurnetteSpecial; 08-14-2009 at 07:23 PM. Reason: spelling |

Now Don't get me wrong here, this IS a beauty. But to me it looks "bulky", amazing what a chrome strip in another place can do for this awesome car. I talked Mike into keeping the chrome spear down the side of our shaved 66, when we got it the chrome strip was missing on the passenger door. Without that strip I saw this same bulkiness spent 9 months looking for this quarter inch wide 3 foot long piece, managed to find a NOS. I am enclosing a similar pic of our 66, see the difference?

That's a difference between a regular Catalina and a 2+2. Notice the chrome 'louvers' on the rear quarter just behind the door. The chrome strip on your car would not look good with those louvers!

I think that the difference in the look of "bulk" has a lot to do with color and ride height, not just the chrome on the side. The lens on the camera and the angle probably make a difference as well. I always thought the '65 and '66 full-size Pontiacs carried their size better than the '67 and later ones.
Still, I've got a real soft spot for '64s...... |

No arguement from me about that '63 Bonnie! I usually prefer the shorter wheelbase of the Catalina and Grand Prix, but I wouldn't kick that Bonnie out of the garage for dripping oil! Sweet!

'64s are under-appreciated, IMO. The '65 bodies were supposed to come out in '64 but delays are what they are (curse those damn engineers!) ...so they did some work under the skin and made '63s even better cars (bless those engineers!).
One of the best daily drivers you can have for the money is a '64 Catalina... 4drs are way under priced and they have the widetrack ride that only Pontiac could provide.

The best ever underfunded but super designed USA sports car 1988 GT Fiero, when it was eating the ass of the Vet ,GM/Chevy who had tryed to keep Pontiac down for a long time ,killed it before the world got too much wind of it.
But it was OK if the Vet was in the hole for it's first 6 years,no $ made off Vets

Today's offering..... a rare '74 Firebird Formula SD455, the last TRUE high-performance Pontiac engine. And, yes the shaker hood on a Formula is correct.... it was a Super-Duty only feature in both 1973 and 1974.

Although I've never been a fan of vinyl roofs (especially on Firebirds and GTOs)
Here's the really special part of the car, the Super Duty 455. |

Here's my 68 GTO drag car. Unfortunately it's been apart since '05.
But we are down to one kid left at home and she graduates this school year so there's hope for it hitting the track again in the future.![]() ![]() Here's a before and after of a 62 Catalina that I finished late this spring for a customer. ![]() ![]() And one more of a customer's '55. He's been working on this car for 10+ years and brought it to me for some finish up work.

My best friend used to live in Pepperell (off Route 111, right near the airport). I never knew the Tin Indian lived there until a couple years after he left when I saw it at a car show.
Nice area up there.... we drive through every year on our way to New Hampshire (it beats towing a camper on 495!). By the way, I even bought my Roadmaster wagon there at Conway Chevy-Buick. |

Here's my tribe. I've had others, a '66 Bonnie convert, a '67 Bonnie convert (my favorite one), a '72 T-37 coupe, '69 Firebird, and a '71 GP. Kinda looking now for a 60, 62 or 64 Cat, Ventura, or Bonnie.

Let's get away from the notion of "made" them great; That's sort-of giving up, relenting to the fact that pontiac is gone. Pontiac, technically, still exists and i think we really should re-focus our efforts on brainstorming ideas to make pontiac last.
i'll start, but feel free to throw ANY idea on the table. The chinese: Now, i know this probably does not seem like the best alternative initially. But there are millions (billions?) of chinese who are catching "car fever" and they would gobble it all up. i mean if they could and did go ape-s>>t over lame buick, they'll love pontiac. A chinese company just bought hummer. There's so much money over there that, really, i don't see why a chinese company/organization couldn't loan gm more money. i feel this is very important---pontiac going away just isn't right or good for society in general. |

As I was shooting this car last weekend at the Late Show in Haysville, Kansas last weekend, I did so with this paticular thread in mind. Now I am not so sure about the color combo, but since purple IS my favorite color, I thought it worked well, but probably wouldn't have been my choice in colors, but since it belongs to someone else, all I do is appreciate what I see. The car is very well done in my opinion.

Just thought I'd resurrect this thread with a pic of my old ride, my "semi-sleeper" '68 GTO. "Semi-sleeper", you ask? Yup, because while she looked all stock, the modified Ram Air III motor said otherwise!

I have enjoyed this thread. I first got my driver's license behind the wheel of a '53 Pontiac and spent a couple of high-school summers in the parts department of a Pontiac-Cadillac dealer.
I've always wanted a '61 Ventura hardtop, but I'd be happy behind the wheel of a vintage Goat. In 1971, I shot this GTO that was running in the Trans-Am series. My recollection is that it was known as the "Grey Ghost," but I'm wondering if it was really the "Grey Goat." CRS. 'Twas at Watkins Glen. The big name was Mark Donohue, driving a Penske-prepped Javalin, but he wasn't terribly competitive. Mustangs and Camaros were tops. BS |

Herb Adams and some fellow Pontiac engineers built and raced the car. It is very cool and shows how the 'outdated' Pontiac motor was built ona budjet and competed with all the fancy high dollar Boss Mustangs and chevs. One of Pontiacs finer moments. Great pics of the Grey Ghost! That was one of my all-time favorite road racers.... probably because it was an old Pontiac running with the big dogs and giving them fits. Thanks for sharing them!

This one hacks off the purists , but you need to know his story and it makes sense,
bought new in 65 and raced it right off the showroom floor .

In your photos there is a brown 62 or 62 2dr sedan with a hood scoop on it. I have a 64 Catalina that was in a family for a long time which supposable had 3 dueces and a hood scoop when the car was new. Does that sound correct and would the scoop look like the one on the brown 2 door sedan. Would the body tag indicate if this is a 3 duece car.

yes the body is turned around on the frame and motor is midway now, Les is sitting next to it , thats the big box next to him. It has a 400SD( punched 389) with dual rochesters . If I remember the story corect , he was building it for the funny cars series that started and by the time he finished it they had gone to glass bodies . I was told it ran 8.60's back in late 60's early 70's when he last actually raced it . Turned into a street car in early 80's rather than let it sit and go to waste , he bought it new in 65 |

Here's a couple of my 69 GTO in progress pics. Yeah, almost all of the floors and trunk had to be replaced. A basket case saved from being scrapped. I must say, I learned a lot about welding! comes in handy when I decide to build a rod.

The 2+2 was a option to the Catalina model only. I forget the VIN series for the '64 model year, but the 1965 and 1967 were part of the 5200 series. For example, a '65 Catalina or a 2+2 VIN will appear like 252375P100001 for a coupe, a convertible 252675P100001 For 1966, 2+2's would have a different Fisher Body number assigned at the body plant because of the different design of the quarter panel. Most likely theory was that Pontiac decided to put the louvers on the body, Fisher had to assign a different VIN to track the body production, Pontiac had to assign a specific VIN to track the mating of the "custom" body shell to the correct chassis. Those VIN's were for example 254376P100001 for coupes and 254676P100001 for convertibles, the 54 being a 2+2 designation. Now for a personal story. I owned a '66 that I bought in 1970. Being a poor kid, I drove without insurance (legal back then) at great risk. I went insurance shopping and was asked for the VIN because I "didn't know" the model of my Pontiac. I knew damn well what it was, hell it was a 4 speed with posi. Well, when I gave him my registration, the "old" guy, probably in his 40's said with all seriousness "Do you know this is a high performance car with a surcharge?" I denied all knowledge of this fact, in fact I said "It's a big old car, like a Bonneville." He then showed me the listing, right next to the GTO of the VIN series. Well, the jig was up, I could not afford 1200 bucks a year in 1970. And it probably was not worth trying to get a price on insurance for my '54 BelAir either. Didn't think he would believe my excuse for replacing the 235 with a 383 Chrysler believable either.........

As much as I want that Judge, if it is a real one with RA I wouldn't be able to afford it haha.
I really like a lot of the classic Pontiacs. I like the 30s ones, and things like a 58 Chieftain would be my ideal custom cruiser. A 64 Catalina 2+2 as well with 8 lugs. GTOs, whatever year and flavor, as well as the first and second gen Firebird and T/As. Third and fourth gens aren't bad either. I really need to get my project going, a '66 4-speed post coupe GTO.

My wife and I are collectors and have about 17 in the current stable, but my favourite daily driver is by far our mild custom 60 Ventura. We picked it up in Livermore about 3 years ago, drove it home, had the front seat re-upholsterd and then I did my first paint job on it. Its made a few 17, and now 16 second passes down the strip and always draws a crowd. The remote doorlocks are a little sketchy sometimes, but I just can't keep the grin off my face while driving it. My friends and I call it Kroozado. Here's a few pics, when we got it and now.

You may have bought it from Year One, but Pontiac NEVER put one on there from the factory! (except the 71-2 455HO) NO 400's ever had a decal on the air cleaner.

My dad's Bonneville back in the late 70's. He still has the car, and it looks great. I look a little different now though

This thread actually touches me even though I've never owned a Pontiac. First off Fireball Roberts on the first page was a hero to many...My Dad and Uncle included. They have always lamented that he died in a Ford. Knight Rider was enjoyed as a child and I will always love Smokey and The Bandit. And the Judge was the second coolest car in Dazed and Confused only to Wooderson's big block Chevelle. A '64 GTO will always be on the wish list. I am also a fan of 4th gen F bodies and as a result have seen some pretty mean TA's and Formulas. There is a mean Australian car running around here with what I hear has close to 500 hp at the wheels. It is nuts to hear it. And when my Dad and I were looking for our first project, there was a '78 Bandit car that was heavily considered. By this time though my interest was completely enveloped by traditional rods and customs and we went with something different. I still think of the possibility of that Trans Am from time to time though.

I just wanted to remind everyone that the 12th annual Pontiac Heaven is about a week away. It is the only true Pontiac event for REAL Pontiac fans. There are no corporate late models. Everything must be Real Pontiac powered.
This year, it is 4 days and includes special presentations by Jim Ewen who was a Pontiac designer from 1957 thourgh the 60s and worked for GM for 40 years. Also Cofounder of HO racing, Craig Hendrickson, I'll be doing a presentation on cooling and starting systems. There are multiple cruise ins, car show, drag racing, special exhibitions, ultra rare displays including the only known existing blown M/T Pontiac HEMI, my blown nitro burning 389 AA/Fuel Dragster, Pontiac parade, parts swap, vendors, good food, music, model contest and much more. Come to Phoenix in April. The Nostalgic Show & Go1 tops off the weekend on Sunday. ![]() ![]() More info on event sites- www.pontiacheaven.org www.nostalgicshowandgo.org Thanks, Steve

My first NEW car was a '60 Pontiac Catalina when I was still living back in Davenport, Iowa. Pontiacs were very popular back then and most folks were familiar with Cordova Drag Strip and Arnie Beswick. I did get another one in the early '70s, a '61 Venturra 389, 4 speed with the Pontiac alum. wheels and 456 gears. Some said that it was one of Mickeys old cars but I couldn't prove that.

Here's one I picked up a few years ago and flipped to Richard Lentinello, the editor of Hemmings Classic Cars. It had been sitting since about 1970 or so and had about 60K miles on it. It's actually already been in a magazine (HCC), illustrating an article on how to buy a project car..... the only car I've ever owned that's been in a magazine!

Monsterflake. I'm building full frame rails that will narrow the rear frame width so I can get these tire/wheels under car, then I'll decide whether I want to cut any outer sheet metal. I'm leaning very far away from cutting them though. The cars style is just too boxy for a round cut, so if I did I would take the original wheelwell patten and just move it up. More like the '68 hemi darts had. More squared. But I like the original lines so I'll probably keep the tires under. We'll know better as the build goes on. Mark L

Twotoejoe. Our wedding present was a '65 Bonnie wagon of my father-in-laws. We were married in 1971 and he was a newly retired carpenter. He used it as a tool hauler for work but kept it in perfect shape. I was 19 and could not quite see myself driving a Bonnie wagon but I used it to trade in on an off the floor 1972 Trans Am. So it turned out to be the perfect gift. Now I wished I had it back. (Actually both cars, heh). Your '62 is beautiful. Mark L
