Nice pictorial! Back in the day, everybody that was into performance drove a Pontiac. Sad day indeed. RIP PMD!

the good old days ... go to the junkyard and pick up another GTO posi rear. had a 69 Gran Prix also. love the torque of those 400's. |

No pics to post but I've had my share. Unfortunately none were HAMB friendly but always had a great time and loved em. 67 Lemans, 2--68 Firebirds, 69 Firebird, 91 Firebird, 67 Catalina and a 71 Model J Grand Prix.Trying to get my hands a 60 Catalina 2 door hardtop and the same guy has a 67 Bonne. with a 421. Both been sittin for years but all there. But lets face as much as we loved em they haven't really built one at least in my eyes since the last Pontiac engine was built. Gonna miss em but it's up to us to find them, bring them back and love em

I'd love to have another Bonneville ragtop!!! I've owned a '66, '67, and a '68 (yeah, i know, HAMB-unfriendly, so what!) and loved all three of them!
A '60 Bonnie, or a '60 wagon would be awesome! There is a '60 Laurentian wagon here on the HAMB for sale, but I'm a tad shy on the funds right now!

Guess i'll contribute, even the new pontiacs aren't half bad, even though half of their parts are metric. I still have an '02 Grand Prix. No problems yet at 91K

No pictures, but it's only Poncho power for my '40 Plymouth drag car...413 cu in, 10:1 compression, fenderwell headers, it sounds like the apocalypse and eats SBC's for breakfast, Dodges for lunch and Fords for dinner...

Just thinking how many I've had now.
'70 Gran Prix, 400, 4-speed and a posi (my dad's, but I drove it to high school) '60 Catalina 4dr (and a '59 Star Chief parts car) '72 Bonneville 4dr, 455. drove until the frame broke '72 Grand Ville 4dr, 455, replaced the Bonne '72 Grand Ville 2dr, intended to put the 455 in it since someone else robbed it of it's own '73 Grand Ville 2dr, got boned when I put that in storage, another 455 car Plus stuff I picked up just to hang onto - '57 Chieftain 4dr, super solid for like $100; '64 Gran Prix I parted out last year (bad frame), '55 and '56 Safaris in rough shape I parted out (sold the tops right off them), '62 Catalina with no motor and '65 LeMans buckets I could have had free and was never able to haul home.. there's probably others I can't remember too.

"I wanna see a 37 pontiac."
This isn't a great shot of my 37 C-dan because all the parts are stored inside the car. I sold the car but have full rights to buy it back if I want to.. Last edited by Rocky; 05-03-2009 at 04:15 PM. |

Thanks guys.........My deceased father was a Pontiac salesman his whole adult life. Those old sales brochures brought back some wonderful memories. Dad had a '58 Bonneville convertible, fuel injection, air ride, white exterior with red cove. ( same interior combo) I was 12 at the time that car & times are indelibly imprinted in my brain!!!

and so it is written...
"on the 6th day at the very conception of time the Almighty hizself created and thus cast upon the earth an evil wind eminating from the great indian burial ground nestled deep in the bowels of a place that from this day forth shall be called "The Badlands" it waz then that the great indian chief shook the lands with all of his spirtual powers snd from out of the fire and ashes it waz created...the now infamus PONTIAC powered 31 Ford coupe known as "She & I " The legend as passed down from each great chief "She & I " born in the Badlands revised in a nightmare. The Pontiac gods from this day forth will cast a smile as the earth shall shake rattle & roll! This shall only end on the very last day of created time" just me... Pontiac Slim |

Okay, not really 100% poncho, but has dash, steering wheel and 389 motor from a 1959 Star Chief; roof insert is the Pontiac's hood run backwards. For extra Pontiacity, note the grill ornament.

The first tunnel ram intake (known as a 'bathtub' intake), brought to you by none other than the engineers at Pontiac in 1963 for doing battle in the 'stocker wars'. These came on the 410 HP 13:1-compression 421 Super Duty engines, equipped with two NASCAR 750 Carter AFB carbs. I doubt they had only 410 HP.
![]() ![]() Another 421 SD engine, a 405 HP 12:1-compression engine with a low-rise 2X4 intake. ![]() A rare reproduction of the 'bathtub' tunnel ram intake. ![]() ![]() ![]() The 'bathtub' repro intake pictured above was produced by the late Dave Johnson, a hard-core Pontiac racer to the end. Dave was a truly dedicated Pontiac drag racer who put forth the effort to cast up his own intake for Nostalgia Super Stock competition. Dave's '63 'White Warrior' Tempest race car is pictured below, he ran the car with both a V8 and a 4-banger Tempest engine (right cylinder bank of a 389). Car’s Best Time: 8.95 ET Seconds at 149.6 mph (with 442 CI Iron Block V8) Minimum Weight with driver: 3,000 lbs. Car’s Best Time: 11.65 ET Seconds at 111.48 mph (with 206 CI Iron Block I4) Weight with driver: 2,710 lbs ![]() Long live Pontiac, and the folks who made them into the true performance cars we all know and love!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Cool thread--I'll make a picture contribution tomorrow(my 60 Catalina)
There was a neat piece today in the Tennessean newspaper about folks with Pontiac love affairs---one in particular was a guy whose dad carried him home from the hospital after he was born in the family GTO(66, I think) Now, 35 years later, the son is planning to drive HIS son home(due next month) in the SAME GTO. ![]() How cool is that for family legacy?

No pics to share, but started with a 62 Tempest LeMans, 4 spd, 4 cyl, 4 barrel. What a combo! Couldn't keep a trans-axel in it, but that's what high school was for.
Then a 62 GrandPrix, 389 tripower, auto but we converted it to a 4 speed. Finally a 65 GTO, tripower, big cam, 4 spd, but the guy before me put a sraight axel in it. If I had cared, probably really shot the hell out of the resale value ![]() Helped a little that my dad was a Pontiac dealer, back in the day. They will be missed, well except for that Aztec model! |

With todays econonmy and GM's corporate leadership it only makes sense "THEY" would see fit to do away with their more affordable line and keep the Higher priced stuff. RIP PMD!

That black Firebird from "Corvette Summer" has to be the best bad guy car of all time, I loved that chase scene at the end. I hated it when he blew it up

I growed up playing in a 40 Pontiac coupe my dad had. It had 11,000 miles on it with the original air in its tires! It was mint. The wild thing about it was that it had a full leather interior and according to pontiac they only made about 12 or so like that. Its in a museum somewhere last I heard.

car they showed. I distinctly remember the T/A-Formula hood. Further more, you could clearly see that James Garner did most of his own driving. He (now 81), Newman and McQueen were the cool ones. If it was on chips, the shows were probably swapping footage and props. Man was I a Trans Am freak when I was a kid. I have more old sketches of them than any other make or model. I since done seen the light but a H.O., white on blue with low back buckets (parchment&black)1970-71 T/A is still a flittering dream of mine..... ![]() ![]()

It is sad, always had a soft spot for the Poncho line. I'll post a pic of the '63 GP tonight (none on this 'puter). Meanwhile here is a shot of one of the wheels. Gotta love the old 8 lugs.

I haven't owned a Poncho in years, but I admit it was a big punch in the gut to hear they're done for. My first car was a 69 Executive we all called Moby Dick. Big, long and white. FIrst car I ever caught air in, first engine I ever tore into, first time I ever got laid in a back seat (one of the few cars that I could actually pull that off in with even a modicum of grace too.) The car was sold off cheap to a guy who wanted to use it in a demo derby (good choice) and the back seat I turned into a bench and have been dragging around the country with me for years. Loved that car. Still have good memories to this day chilling in the garage, sitting on that bench seat and reminiscing how various love stains got there and with whom.

Here's a barn shot of my Judge right before I bought it from the 3rd owner. The best part is it was pretty easy to find the history on it since the first owner was my old man!

A buddy of mine has/had a '701.5 Formula in this Avocado green. The car was mint and an original, all California car. He let a buddy take car of it and take care of it he did.
I thought Martin had more sense than this but, apparently, it was left to rot in a field the last several years, a wet field. That car was nearly perfect when I moved on 2001. Worst part, it could have been mine for at or under $3000.00. Even the color looks good at that price.

Here are a few shots of my Poncho's. I've had at least one Pontiac in the driveway since I got my license. The count is up to eight now! The latest is a '09 G8 GT, great car, it's a shame they are getting axed now they were showing signs of turning around. Long live the Chief of Sixes!

Here's a small sampling of Pontiac Ads that scroll as my screen saver. How do you tell a tiger from a pussycat? They really must have had a great ad agent in the '60's...

Wow, now I know what to do with that hood I have found out in the back 40! I think it's a '59/60 Starchief.

Almost every car I've ever owned has been a Pontiac. Started with a '40 coupe flathead 6 when i was 15 and continued with a '61 Tempest 4-door, '54 straight 8 4-door, '63 Bonneville 2-door hardtop, '69 Custom S, '70 1/2 Firebird Formula 400 4-speed, '64 GTO tri-power 4-speed,'64 LeMans, '55 2-door sedan, '59 Bonneville Sport Coupe (bought in 1977 and still own), '66 2+2 conv. 421 tri-power automatic, two '69 Trans Ams, '84 6000STE, '66 LeMans, '61 Catalina 2-door hardtop 4-speed, '86 6000 S/E, '86 Fiero S/E, '94 Grand Am coupe, '97 Montana, and my current hot rod project '31 Pontiac rumbleseat coupe. Also collect (as money permits) vintage Pontiac memorabilia. To me, Pontiac always had an attitude that was reflected in its cars AND its advertising until the ' General ' ripped the rug out from under them and would not let them build the type of cars that made them great (pressure from Chevy perhaps?). Not happy at all to see them go but will enjoy Pontiac cars and memories forever!

My old '62 Pontiac LeMans Tempest convertible...194.5 ci Slant Four, auto, AM, heater, power top, and that's about it! Sold it to HAMBer Guthriesmith about two years ago. Cool project car! Another Pontiac ragtop I owned, besides the three Bonneville rags I mentioned before.
I've always said that if I had not grown up as a Mopar guy, I'd have been a Pontiac fanatic, instead! I've also owned a '70 Firebird, '64 Tempest, and a '65 Catalina coupe.

Newbie post. Couldn't help wanting to show a few (Pontiacs) I have owned and my current ride - the 63 Catalina - on this great thread. Yes, I married the woman in the 79 TA (and still am, 30 years later). Pontiacs rule (or at least used to)!

First pass in June 1966 @ Irwindale within days of purchase. 389 3x2, 4 speed, Posi, Tyree Headers, tow tabs and battery mounted in trunk I was in heaven. Finally owned a "Poncho" that would hold its own on the streets or strip, honeymoon ended when Uncle Sam stepped in 8 months later. 43 years later putting together a '61 Ventura 455 3x2, we never really grow up.

Back in 1971 I have a 62 Pontiac Catalina and that was a damn good cruising car . Put a 389 in it and it ran great ! Nice and big with plenty of room to "Neck in & .....well you get the idea " !

hey guys. Pontiac didn't die this week...or next year. Pontiac died in 1981. that was the last year of the Pontiac V-8. With the motor gone, so went its identity. After 1981, a Pontiac was a chebby with its chebby motor.
Pontiac and GM deserves what it got. They built one ugly piece of crap after another. They could not get anything right. This is the last nail in the coffin and it should have happened over 20 years back. After building up a few generations of Pontiac loyalists, PMD and GM pissed on them. dropped our favorite motor. then even scrapped out the tooling for any future parts. I say piss on Pontiac and piss on GM. after 1981, it was all 'corporate nonsense'. in 1981 I promised myself to NEVER , Ever buy a new GM car because of this 'corporate nonsense'. Screw GM, screw todays Pontiac I am very glad it is finally over, it is well deserved. i am sorry for those who will loose their jobs though. I support and promote REAL Pontiacs only. What a damm shame those SOBs killing off my motor in '81. fortunately, the aftermarket has made the Pontiac V-8 better than Pontiac ever did. and more trick parts are on the way too! AMEN. No, the Pontiac V-8 motor is not dead, it is alive and well! the Pontiac 'badge' in dead on the assembly line. who gives a crap about the junk they built over the last few decades anyway? some do but, not the real Pontiac guys. As for me, I'll continue to drive and build and race nothing but REAL Pontiacs for as long as I live. I don't need no freakin' late model. Steve Barcak www.pontiacheaven.org

This really sucks! I've had a bunch of 'em & grew up with Pontiacs. At least one has been in the garage since the day I was born.
'63 GP '69 GP SJ '69 Judge '72 GP J '71 GP SJ '79 TA '67 400/4spd 'Bird '68 400/4spd 'Bird (2) '69 400/Auto 'Birds '69 400/4spd 'Bird & my current '64 GTO 455/tri-power/4spd They were THE performance division for GM! Why the hell would they keep two truck lines that are virtually identical (GMC/Chevy) & ditch Pontiac! Unreal! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

We had lots of pontiacs in my family. My dad had a 64 Catalina (we came to CA in it 1964 via rte 66) a 68 Executive and a 71 Lemans. Sister had a 70 Firebird W/6cyl traded it in for a 71 Firebird Formula 400. I had a 50 Chieftan, a 50 Sedan Delivery and 56 Safari. All were great cars wish they were stiil around
. Pics of a couple of mine.
