perhaps not entirely on topic... I have a love of old car haulers from the 30s though the 50's and was looking for some manufacturer's names with not much luck... can anyone point me in the right dirrection? Photos would be great too... does or has anyone ever seen one of these for sale? The style, the lines, these old haulers gave new cars a ride to the dealership in style... looking for some inspiration and doing research for a future project... Thank you in advance for any information...
The car haulers with pizazz and style were usually of the manufacture of the cars they were delivering and special built for/by the car company for the job. New cars were a really big deal from the earliest days until the mid-60s when they all slowly but surely began to all look alike and nobody cared any more by the 80s. And today? Ho-hum. Oh look what is that? Can't tell, probably some Jap car or Korean or Indian(not yet, but Mahindra is coming), or Chinese(not yet), or Swedish or English(well, not English), or German, but not French or Italian, Thank God.

WOW!!!!this is very interesting. I have been a car nut for 50 years but have not paid much attention to how they got to us. It looks like to me car carriers had stationary sides all the way up until Bankhead Carriers out of Bankhead Georgia built the collapsable side carrier I believe sometime in the '80s that is standard for all 9 car carriers today. It added the ability to carry more cars per load. Can you imagine how much time it took to load those four '20s-30s cars that are loaded in a near verticle position?
On a pre race show they were showing an early NASCAR hauler. They used an old school bus. They figured out how many people were going to ride to the track & left that many seats. They removed the rest of the body & moved the body rear end up & riveted it back on. Then they flat beded the rest of the way back to haul the car.
LowKat - I think that Maserati transporter in the last shot is in fact the same one that carries the Scarabs above. I want to say I read it on the plaque that accompanied the carrier at Pebble, but I might be wrong. Great pics BTW. I love esoteric shit like this!
This truck belongs to Rusty Symmes. The trailer is one of two known to exist. About a 5 year restoration. He even had to make alot of his own castings to refurb trailer. Truck has a big block Chevy, Vintage Air, ect. When it rolls into shows this year it will have not one, not two, but THREE aluminium nose, 409, 62 Bel Airs. The best of everything from front to back.
