from one dog lover to another, I feel your sadness. Luckily I haven't lost any of mine yet (wasn't allowed to get a dog until I bought my own house-so they're only 4) but I dread the day that something happens to any of my girls. When we had my fiance's dog put down 2 years ago I lost it for 2 days. This beer is for Toby.

I feel your pain brother. I have had to put down two dogs. I cried like a school girl each time. So much for being tough. But, he may be gone from here but now he is running and having a good time somewhere just waiting for the day that you two will be together again. I TOTALLY believe that.

Dogs have powers we can't even fathom (this isn't drunk talk). In my first post I talked about having my fiance's dog put down, she got Lyme's and it got her quick and fast. We took her home from the vet for 30 minutes or so that she could say goodbye to the other 2 dogs we have, it was a rough half hour to say the least. When we took her back to the vet for the final time things got intense. The skies were crystal clear that day, it was a saturday afternoon. Well, when the vet had to do her thing, the sky got dark as night for 5 minutes and when it was her time to go, there was one strike of thunder. weird, right? Then the skies cleared and we knew everything was gonna be ok. I swear to you I'm not making this up. You'll get through it, it just might take some time, luckily you've got his legacy still with you.

I lost my pup on Friday. Dingo was 17 years old and became my buddy at first sight. She loved to go for rides in all the cars I had. She even knew it was me coming before I got home. She stayed at my moms house because I moved out and did not want her to be alone. I was not the same to got to moms house and not have my dog there.

My little Jack Russel just hears the garage door open and freaks out because he wants a ride in the roadster so bad! I take her with me all the time. I dont know what I would do if I lost her. I guess I am setting myself up for a heartbreak.

My sincere condolences--having lost a few good 4-legged friends myself over the years, I know how you feel. They become part of the family (or maybe we become part of the pack). I like to think that our departed friends are now in a place where the squirrels are catchable, there's always a sofa to lie on, and nobody minds if I chew on the furniture. RIP.

Also, remember that there is ALWAYS another amazing dog just waiting for a good home. You can never replace a dog but a new dog would be special in his/her own way. I have learned that much.....

Sorry for your loss . . . this might help

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Oh me! That is beautiful. If that's the case someday I will rejoice. I'll see my old Rottie again at the "Rainbow Bridge". I've got one now that's going on 13 and that's old for a Rottie. She doesn't get around too good and I'm so afraid that someday she'll be sharp in mind but won't be able to get up and around. I dread the day!

I am also a firm believer in the rainbow bridge. After all, the Bible does say that the lion will lay down with the lamb. that proves there are and will be animals in heaven. There are a few waiting for me there already and probably a few more will make it there before me still. The hurt never goes away, it just changes.

I've had to pull a copy of Rainbow Bridge out a couple of times and it always takes me to the good times... Funny how something that can just look at you and you know what it's saying, feeling can brighten your dullest day... How when you wanna just lay around, it goes to the same place and can lay there beside you, but suddenly you get a new spirit to get up and get motivated and it's like they just found a new joy in life... Yeap, we'll get another, I'm sure you will too, and yeah we'll be heart broke again, but for the time we have, it's the best...

Condolences ...

Real men know how to cry.

I'm sorry for your loss. And it is a real loss. God gave us the responsibility to take care of animals. You shouldered your responsibility and took care of him and showed him gentleness and love to the end. Thank you for your care and love for animals.

I was thinking the same thing. Losing a loved one no matter who it happens to be sucks. I miss my dog Bubba but I know he is in a better place. There are plenty more that need to be adopted and could use a good buddy like yourself. Go out and get one!!!!

Sorry for your loss, I have one that will turn 15 this year and I know I only have a couple of years left with her if that.
I have had to put a couple of my dogs down in the past and the house doesn't seem right after that for awhile.

I lose my dog pitbull Rebel, back in Sept. He was 15 years old. We knew the day was coming, but when it happened we were torned up. I didnt go to work that day.We buried him in our back yard.It still hurts, but I find comfort knowing he's in the yard watching over us.
We have another dog, Ravyn would will be 11 this year, she's been my baby girl, and I know I will take it really hard.
I am so sorry for you loss.

I lost my Black Lab 3 years ago. Your words ring true. My dog collasped one night right in front of me. Picked him up and ran him into the Vet.

After 30 minutes of the vet looking him over, the status was grim and I had to put him down.

Damn dog was wagging his tail as I told him goodbye! Dogs will love you to the bitter end!

Sorry for your loss. Its been 10 years since I had to my DOG, Mojo down. He was a 15 year old Golden Retriever. I have his photo framed on my desk to this day. He was a country dog and lived his whole life outdoors and loved it. Slim

I don't know if this is something you're considering but a guy that works for me JUST rescued a little boy Pit pupp off the street about 30 minutes ago. He's gonna take him to the shelter to get checked out and evaluated for adoption. I know I'm not exactly up the street but I'd love to help find a stray a good home with a guy who might be looking for a new pal. PM me if you wanna talk about it.

Careful, they'll try to put him down. Pits are born killers you know.

thank you for saying that, some people think they don't have a soul, but a creature without a soul wouldn't sacrifice it's own life for you. ask any cop who's had his police dog take a bullet for him,or any of the thousands of parents who's child was saved by the family pet,who died in the process.God created them to be companions for people, they are our protectors also. I feel the pain of the recent loss too, I just lost Blackie, my seven year old black lab, it takes a vey long time to get over it. before he died he dragged himself into the bathtub, one of his favorite places to lie. I had kept checking on him every couple of minutes, he made a noise to get my attention, first noise he had made in two days, then when i put my arms around him, he died in my arms. He was waiting for me to be there to die. this is very hard to write about. I buried him down in the swamp by the river, pretty place. some people get their dogs creamated, but i believe if you could ask them, they would just rather return to the earth in the cycle of nature. found a nice place where a lab would like to be laid to rest.

my girlfriend and i both lost our dogs within 6 months of each other,i had to make the god awful decision to have my lil' jack russell cross(mickey) put to sleep,it ripped my heart out,big time.my girlfriend's yellow lab(hector) feel ill and passed within 24 hours, she was totally ripped apart.a year on we made the decision to bring a chocolate lab into our lives,he will be a year old soon, and has been bought us so much joy,i lost my brother very suddenly last december and oscar (our choc lab) was there for us and seemed to sense when we really needed that extra love.i truely feel for anyone that lose's there dog/best friend/puppy or what ever you choose to call them.i'm a real believer that we all meet up someday and get the chance to be together again.best wishes and condolences.

whoever said it's not cool to be upset about losing a dog, must not have ever owned one. it's like losing your best friend. That lab was a like a child. crazy dog would walk over to me and stare at me while i was asleep, then when i opened my eyes,he would burp in my face, followed by that lab laugh.

They truly are man's best friend - I'm so sorry for your loss. I have a 13 yr old who's probably not going to be with us much longer - I know it will be devastating for us when it's her time to go - welling up just thinking about it.

Dog's are like kids. I don't have any kids but I did loose my dog of 10 years last September to a brain tumor. It sucks, big time. Like mentioned before, hang on to all the memories. No one can ever take that away from you. You guys will meet up again. Take care man!

I'm sorry for your loss. My dogs are my children and I'm devesated each time one passes. As you can see by my avatar, "Red" my boxer, means everything to me. The picture is of him, not my car. I found him in a field after someone hacked him up and left him to die. Since I found him approximately 8 1/2 yrs. ago, he has been "living the dream". Each time one passes, I swear that I'll never get another one, but I miss the joy so much, I find that healing can only begin with getting another one.
I know yours can never be replaced, but if you do consider getting another companion, please consider a stray (save a life).

Read this post and then tell me it does not make you want to go to the pound and get a dog. I know if I had room, I would go get another. But I already have 3 dogs and 2 cats but I am tempted to go get another everyday.

That is a fact that the dog lets you know when it is time. Both of mine that I had to put down totally let me know when they were ready.

I have been through family losses before, but my last family member to pass away was my grandmother, and that was 30 years ago, so I guess I was too young to fully understand and it didn't hit me as hard as it would have later on in life. I will say, in my adult memories, losing my dog Bella was absolutely the worst thing that ever happened to me, it hit me so hard I couldn't believe it. I'll never forget her. But, a little while afterwards, I thought to myself that somewhere out there, there is a dog waiting in a shelter for me to "get over it" and come rescue them. It was very hard, but my wife and I forced ourselves to go to the SPCA. It was the best thing we could have done, and it helped us cope with the loss of Bella. So, here they are, in all their glory:

Stu, doing the navigating:

And Bessie, doing what she does best, holding down the sofa:

My condolences for your loss.

I am really sorry for your loss.

We had to put my son's Staffordshire Terrier down last week.

The dog has lived with us since he was born...best dog we ever had.

It has really hit me hard...a lot harder than I thought.

I really do feel your pain.

I've had alot of dogs in my 60+ years, it always feels like loosing your best friend and it never is easy putting them down.
Reading these posts has put a couple of tears in my eyes.
We've got two dogs, a Cocker named Taffey, and a freeway (we found him on the freeway after he had been hit by a car) dog named Casey. Casey hates cars, and although I've tried, the only way to get him in a car is to pick him up and put him in. The Cocker is ready to go in the car day or night and loves driving.
We are very fortunate to have our Vet live right across the street and with our Cocker which has Cushings Deasease and kidney issues........he has been at our house in the middle of the night, kept medicine at his house and just been there whenever we needed him. When it is their time it will be like loosing a part of my heart/soul.
I know how you feel because I've been there...........just wishing you the best in this hard time.

Our dog My wife's & mine and also my son's in Michigan has had a tumor on her right rear knee for over a year now. Two different Vet's a year ago said $1000 just figure out what to do then most likely remove the leg. So she's been walking (before the diagonosis) and after 3 miles a day & is still in great shape. But the tumor is now the size of my fist & is starting to impact her walking. She will be 11 years old on 5-5-2009 & has had a good life. I'll carry her until she is in pain. 80 Pound Akita.

To me quality of life is important. She has been across the nation 10 times and most likely been in 30 states.

Here's a picture. Not looking forward to the decision day.

Sorry for your loss. I can only begin to think how you are feeling. I get choked up thinking about what I will do when my boy goes. Between colds, broken bones & being attacked by another dog. He is always by my side making me smile. When I clicked on the thread he was trying to get me to play, after I read what you wrote he laid down and closed his eyes. He knows and he would show you he is sorry for your loss if he could.

your pup is waiting for ya. i completely believe it.

my best friend..........

if you have to, get the one leg amputated, they adjust very quickly to running on three legs, may spare her life and improve it for a long time, if it stops her pain and allows her to be able to live i'm sure she would rather be alive. I didn't have to put blackie down, he went so quick, I don't think he would have wanted to go on some stainless steel table in a vets office, he died peacefully at home,he got to spend time with the other dogs, and he died in his favorite place,in the bathtub. He was a strange one. but the most important thing was he died in his home where he was comfortable.

My wife and I have four Great Danes. They are our children too. They all rotate sleeping in our bed, in the middle, between Tammy and me. The horrible thing about Danes is that they only live 8-10 years...if you're lucky. But the amount of love, unconditional love, they give in that short amount of time, is worth all of the pain I feel when they are gone. Brother, you can tell by the number of posts there have been in just the last two days, that you have a huge family here and we all feel your pain. Know that you are not alone in your grief. My heart goes out to you and your family.

Hogan was the first to ride in my Pontiac the day we got it running.

Sorry to here about the loss. Losing one of these little varmints is tough.
We lost Scooter 3 weeks ago. she just got so stove up she could barely walk.... She stopped taking medication about a month ago...funny how they make those decisions. She pretty much stopped eating unless we hand fed her things like soda crackers, fruit, etc.

Just didn't have a choice. It's gonna hurt for quite a while. She went with us everywhere. Many, many hot rod miles with never a complaint.

We had to have our Lab/Rotty put down on Valentines Day; so I know what everyone is talking about. Just as with any loss, it's real hard at first but does get better, thankfully. I do know that after losing all 3 of our pets in less than 2 years we're through for awhile. Not saying we'll never get another one, but... it'll be awhile.

My wife and I have chosen dogs over children for a few reasons, I'm not looking forward to the day I lose my little one. She's sitting by my side right now, and we just got a little fellar for my wife. I feel your pain and share your sorrow.

you never get over the loss, it's like losing a child. I buried my black lab down by the river near my favorite fishing spot, It's quiet and peaceful there and undisturbed by man. it's in a flood plain,so it should stay that way. I figured it would be a place he would like. Some people have them creamated but it seems to me if you could ask them they would want to return to the earth in the natural cycle of life. I'm sure we will see them again, If there are lions and lambs in heaven surely there are dogs, God even hears the cry of the sparrow.

Topolino Kid-

Sorry for your loss, been there a couple times myself. Never thought I could find another co-pilot as good as the last, but it can happen and has happened for me, more than a couple times.

Thanks for starting this thread.

go save one from the shelter that will be put down otherwise, you'll feel better and he will thank you for it. Too many dogs there that will be put down just for being alive.

I feel your pain my friend, we had to put down my Lab/Rot at the end of last year. My Mom and I held him while they gave him the shot and we both cried like hell. It wasn't the best time in my life already and then we had to Bandit down and that really put me into a tailspin, he'd been my best bud for 15 years and it was hard to have the make the decision to put him down. I had the same thought that I would never have another dog because I never want to go through that again untill a friend reminded me that after the inital pain wears off you will always think about the fun and good times and very rarely about the sadness that comes in the end. You know what she was right! Now when I think about Bandit all I think about is the fun we had and what a great friend he was. Sure there are times I'm sad and I miss him but damn we had a lot of fun! Here's to man's best bud!

I had to have my 13 year old Pitbull put down today. It is a pain that I have never felt before and I hate it. I have had dogs run away, dogs die on me, and I never felt like this. This is the worst I have felt yet. I miss him and I will never forget him.

Sorry to hear this, we had our dog of 17 years pass away while we were away at a show, our 16 year old came home to find him laying by the back door in the kitchen. What a long drive home and what a ordeal for our son, I don't think he'll ever forget it.

thought I would put a positive post up, I almost lost Lady the other day, vet doesn't know what caused her to lose body weight so fast, she desn't have much body fat to begin with, but with us talking care of her 24/7 and constant small meals being fed, she is regaining her strength and her attitude. The first day had to support her to walk outside, yesterday she walked all the way around the house, still very weak but getting stronger, after this I will never get her unspoiled, how do you tell a dog you aren't spoon feeding her anymore?

Sorry for your loss. They are the Best co-pilots.

I lost a couple great pitts over the last two years--Petey and Buddy.

Here is Timmy--born about 2 Jan 2011.

He was helping out in the shop last night but it was too hot.

My dog's ashes and mine are ultimately going into the same urn. If that helps us spend eternity together in one way or another, that's perfect.

So Sorry, Murf. If forgiveness, loyalty and unconditional love were the prerequisites to going to Heaven...our dogies would make it and we wouldn't.

I am truly saddened to hear of your loss. I know mine is like a 4th child to me. It hurts I know. I wish you better days. We have no better companions than our dogs.

Topo, I know what your going through. Almost four years ago my best friend Molly a black Lab was killed chasing two squirrels and ran into an SUV. Not a day goes by that I don't think of her. We now have a yellow Lab Maggie whose trying very hard to be my new best friend. Getting another dog helps a little. Sorry for your loss.

Lady didn't make it, she had been gaining strength and just went downhill suddenly, Bubba is beside himself, he was pawing at her and licking her and howling, she died in my arms, I buried her by the river where I bury the ones I lose, just as predicted when Bambi showed up I knew I was going to lose one. it happens every time, when one is about to die God sends me another furry lost soul

. Still hurts, but this helps a little..............

The thoughts that scurried through my head,
As I cradled her in my arms.
Were of her younger, puppy years,
And OH...her many charms.

Today, there was no gentle nudge
With an intense "I love you gaze",
Only a heart thats filled with tears
Remembering our joy filled days.

But an Angel just appeared to me,
And he said, "You should cry no more,
GOD also loves our canine friends,
HE's installed a 'doggy-door"!

Time to get another dog, me thinks. Gary

Why some folks have dogs, and not a spouse:

1. The later you are, the more excited your dogs are to see you.
2. Dogs don't notice if you call them by another dog's name.
3. Dogs like it if you leave a lot of things on the floor.
4. A dog's parents never visit.
5. Dogs agree that you have to raise your voice to get your point across.
6. Dogs find you amusing when you're drunk.
7. Dogs like to go for long rides, for no reason at all.
8. A dog will not wake you up at night to ask, "If I died, would you get another dog?"
9. If a dog has babies, you can sell them or give them away.
10. A dog doesn't care if you walk around the house naked every now and then.
11. If a dog smells another dog on you, they don't get mad, they just think it's interesting

And last, but not least:

12. If a dog leaves, it won't take any of your stuff.

It's impossible to explain to people who aren't crazy about their pets like we are how we feel about our furry little buddies. I know when they see these threads they think we are nuts, or soft, or both. But those of us who consider our pets members of our families understand and each of us feels terrible when something happens to one of them, and it brings back memories of losing our own pets when someone posts about losing one of theirs.

I'm not ashamed to say I have cried like a baby when I lost Scooter and Sniffy, my two cats who had been with me for about 17 years. It took a long time before I could even look at a picture of them and not tear up. After they passed I swore I would never have another one because I didn't want to ever go through that again, but then Lucky came into my life by accident, and I am so glad to have him.

I'm so very sorry to hear in this thread about the wonderful pets who we loved and who have passed on. The only consolation is that we gave them a great home and lots of love, which is more than a lot of animals ever have the chance to experience. Every night I feed a bunch of cats that come to my shop for dinner and my heart breaks for them because they lead such a hard life living in the wild. But at least I know they go to sleep every night not hungry.

Sniffy and Scooter always had to be in on the action at the shop, sitting in their own chairs supervising.

And some of the ones who stop by the shop every night. If I am a few minutes late they are all sitting on the trailer waiting for me.

Don

Thumbs up Re: Go for a ride? Mans best copilots! ..lost one tonite......

I found this little guy under my Mustang on a "cold" October morning at 3:00 am... I was leaving the house to go get some smokes at the corner gas station... And I heard him crying under there... Long story short, I gave him a home...
This was in '09...

Lady my standard Manchester always had to sleep under the covers no matter what, I still keep expecting her to jump up on the bed and head butt me to tell me she's ready to go to sleep. I had to bury her in a blanket, now of course I have this beautiful brindle pitt mix who thinks she's a lap dog, so stubborn, she showed up at exactly the right time. It's hard to watch tv through a big old brindly colored head,, if you lose one go save yourself one, they know that you saved them somehow and are eternally grateful for a chance to live instead of being put down as a stray, I think your lost furry buddy would agree and wouldn't want you to be by yourself without four paws watching out for you

I'm sorry for all of you who have lost a loyal friend. I lost three dogs last year. There were all 13 years old. Maybe I'm a wuss. I really don't care. I cried and grieved for every one of them. I would defend my dog with my life, as she would me.

The thing about a dog is that ultimately you will end up heartbroken when you lose them but it's always worth the pain for the years of joy, friendship, loyalty that these heavenly furred creatures bring us. I feel sorry for people who have never known this because they have never known pure love.

Can you tell I'm a dog lover? There is nothing in the world as wonderful as a dog. Nothing.

I forgot to add. hit the shelters and find a partner before they give them the needle.(silly me, I told you to find one. doesn't work that way, they will choose you) Believe me, in the long run it will help heal the hole in your heart. It will never completely heal, but that's not a bad thing. After I lost my furry soul mate, I thought I'd never be able to get that close to another. Wrong, We have now rescued over 30 babies and found better homes for all but the ones with medical issues. (7 at the moment) Those, we keep and give them the best life they can have.

every day i look at this thread....and it brings back memories of those days....then i see all who have posted about loosing their "Furry soul mates" (yeah i dig that too!!!!!!!!) and it makes me a bit sadder to see that it is still an ongoing issue...but ........then i reach down and rubb one of the new boxer babies and think of how this thread is here to help heal and grieve...

also i do agree with the statement tht the dogs pick their owners....that's why we now have a third boxer baby....one of my other regular truckers came thru and was telling me how noone wanted this lil guy....too small...yeah he's the runt of the litter..also first born...which is the same on both accounts for Pieper our female boxer....here he is hanging in bed with Doxier, the 10 month old male.
