It's no secret that the late 40's and early 50's is the time period that most intrigues me. The hot rods of that era were just so simple and functional and the social environment of the brand new sport was... well, just as simple and damn near outlaw...

That was awesome, even the cars pulling in off the street, and the push cars and trucks were sweet. Home built cars, raceing in shorts and tee shirts, you could walk right up to the cars! Man what a time to be alive. And did you see the way Mickey Thompson car was jumpin around at the big end? What a hand full. Thanks for posting the video.

That clip brings back many memories. The group I was part of, Shaker Engineering, was at the the track when that footage was filmed. I was standing about 30 feet away when Strickler made that run. Shirley Shahan was a doll and used to take off her high heels and put them behind the front seat before a run and drive in stockings.
Notice the use of tow bars. Only the big guys had trailers and no one had an enclosed one. 1964 was the first time we had a trailer and it was for the 1962 4 dr wagon with a 380 hp 409/4sp that ran C/S. That year we won the first offered Junior stock eliminator with Phil Chisholms I/SA. Good times, before your wallet determined the winner. Frank

I hope you don't mind Ryan. Here's some modern Stock footage from a good friend of mine who's car ran at the Winters in Pomona this year, a '69 C/SA 428CJ Mustang (running 10.80's which is freakin astounding) vs the new '09 car in AA/SA. Fun to watch, typical sandbagging though, the new car was as much SS as it was Stock, the '09 was patting the throttle at 1000 ft you can hear it in the audio. The '69 even has an iron intake and a 735 cfm stock Holley. Hope you enjoy.

And for $15 anyone can run their rental car or personal car down the very same track.
If you're just passing thru on a schedule that allows it, neat deal to share those molecules of history..... http://www.oreillyracewaypark.com/ap...5174&zoneid=95

NYMPHOMANIA! I was expecting some Jungle Pam footage towards the end when they showed the Mickey Thompson car hopping down the track.

Did you see the Indian at the starting line ? A national event tradition for many years. I think he did some kind of ANTI rain dance to keep the wet stuff away.

What is cool about that old footage, is Dave Strickler banging that Mopar is he's up in the seat, a low back one to boot, wearing a T-shirt, no fire suit and just letting it wail. Is he just he just wearing a lap belt? That is how it used to be done.
I wanted to run my Galaxie in N/SA with a 300hp 390 auto factor, man the money it would take to be competitive, forget it. Its a low 13 second maybe high 12's car in fighting trim. Rules out the wazoo. It sure isn't like the '60's. |
