Default pics East coast hot rods

Little or no chop and a deep channel, hell even some sectioning. Show some of your favorite East coast hot rods. Here's one that has sent my build in a right coast direction, taken from here.

Do a search for: "East Coast Style" and you should find some pics. Or check out the book "Cool Cars Square Roll Bars" by Bernie Shuman.

They were actually Ford Spare tire covers that were used as fenders. These fenders are prominent on alot of older hotrods espec East Coast cars because of the strict Fender Laws that were enforced back in the day.

Here's a little article shedding light on the early style differences of the East and West coast rods and the possible variables that created them.

There used to be a place in Paramus, North Jersey Speed and Custom, that had one of the nicest, cleanest custom '57 T-Birds I ever saw. Very subtle mods, nosed, decked, peaked on the fins and headlight brows with frrenched headlights. Anyone ever see it or have pics? This was back in the '60's.

The other side is busy driving their rods in their year long beautiful weather. Here on the cold right coast we are busy in the garage trying to get some round bar twisted in the shape of our initials for a funky nerf bar. ha

Some nice stuff here.I especially liked the Hartford Autorama pics of Chuck Vranas. The two I enjoyed most were the pic of the R&C Dream Truck BEFORE those horrible fins were attached and the custom 53 Old Fiesta(a REAL one)getting fueled. That was an R&C cover car sometime in 1954 and I think it was called the Maki Special.

Here's one of a friend's Model A taken somewhere around 1957-58 when it had the flathead motor. It later sported a 347 Pontiac w/tri-power and was painted gold.Belonged to Al Frecca of Everett Massachusetts. He's still around and crazy as ever but the car is long gone.

The others I've posted before but what the hell;I'll post them again. Some were taken in Boston and others in Hartford CT.

Built this one bout two years ago. I didn't like it much, so I never really posted it here.

It's what the customer ordered. It now lives in Sweden... owner was responcable for paint and interior. Sucked, cause I really wanted to paint this one... I'll keep the concept for a future project.

The over chopped grills sometimes work on these cars, I'm more on the side of a grill following the body lines.

Yep, you'll also notice the ubiquitous 39' Ford Pickup truck grill on a bunch of these cars and a bunch of track noses as well.

Sorry, just this one. I wasn't too thrilled with the build since I couldn't paint it, so I did'nt take a lot of pics. I think that is the real thrill in finishing off a late 50's early 60's rod.

The last few cars I have sent to Europe really never got paint. It is a lot easier for them to get em through if the paint looks like shit, and they can claim them as junk.

I love East Coast rods.

I know I have posted these before, but here is the 'Golden Rod' now in Skip Barber's collection, built in, er mostly sunny New Jersey, by Jack Lentz.

Paul Fizgerald's roadster at Pebble (not my pic but a great shot)

Ray, I could look at your pictures all day.
Here's a few bad ones I can post now that I finally have access to a scanner:

This one was more hot rod than custom:

And this one isn't my picture...I think I actually lifted it from the HAMB years ago.
I remember seeing it in like Street Rodder or something and absolutely loved this car:

Oddly, about a week ago or so I posted a few local cars on my blog thing.

This is my all time favorite! I have posted these pictures before on other threads. Same owner all these years, and he drives it everywhere. Most locals know the coupe.

feul10922 My father in law has a unchopper 32 5w that he has owned since 57. He bought it from a guy down the street for $25 complete. He stashed the fenders in the attic of his moms house and years later went back to get them and his brother had sold them.He still has the most important parts.

That roadster belongs to Mick Dornes and unfortunately he wrecked it pretty bad last Thanksgiving. He's rebuilding it, and has been driving this coupe again. I first saw this coupe back in 1964, after he had just painted it candy apple red.

A '34 I owned in '65 with two friends and another shot of Andy Kassa's '32 in blue when it was known as the Jersey Gem.

Richie that is Billy Sexton`s 34,he used to drag race it in the 60`s,sat way up in the front on a straight tube axle and had a 409 in it. The amazing thing I thought was he never cut the firewall for any engine he put in it. That is a very large cubic inch big block know.

Yes sir Hoop!
Here is an absolutely horrible picture of Animal's car from "Way back when"
I apologize for the quality but you can almost kinda sorta get the idea...

You know, I think that was in a stack of stuff the guy I refer to as my "hot rod mentor" once gave me.
That picture and a picture of the Norm Wallace car with a top on it which I have to scan.
The guy who gave it to me, oddly, considers Animal his "mentor".

Dirtyest,

No I don't know him . Would like to meet him though. I really love the car he made, and I hear he has built all kinds of nice cars. Got to see the Golden Rod up close and personal though with Skip and it was a very cool experience.

I know he is still in Jersey, maybe I can meet you (finally) and we can see Jack.

I'm not sure how "old" of a car this is but I've been seeing it around since the 80's....I think this picture is from 99?

I don't remember much about this one other than it was from CT and maybe in Cool Cars & Square Rollbars somewhere?

The car was originally a fenderless roadster and was built by Fred Manning of Saugus,Massachusetts around 1954.After driving it that way for a couple years,he decided he wanted a coupe. He used the top from(I believe)a 32 3-window.The car had a set of side curtains made for it that snapped in.The rear fenders were made from two sets of 34 fenders and the rolled pan was made from the top of an early Chevrolet sedan. The running boards tapered into the body toward the rear and were molded to the body.It had a 1935 Ford truck grille shell sectioned to fit and the insert was made of welding rod painted silver. There was a top hood section only.It originally was built with a flathead but somewhere along the way Fred installed a 1951 Olds engine while retaining the 40 Ford transmission(with column shift)and 2-speed Columbia rear end(which never worked right).

When my cousin Dick(Manley)acquired it in 1959 the body was painted a dark non-metallic maroon and the top was white. The Olds engine had the original single two barrel carb and it stuck through a hole in the hood.Dick installed a three carb manifold which meant the hood couldn't be run and painted the car the metallic blue shown in the picture.I believe it was a Chrysler color.

The interior consisted of a maroon and white rolled and pleated seat back with boat cushions on the floor. There were matching door panels but no headliner(no room). It was a very uncomfortable car to drive and/or ride in.Dick was about 5'7" and barely fit behind the wheel.I was 6'1" and could not.

Dick had the car for several years before trading it off for a chopped 53 Studebaker coupe with a 352" Packard engine.A guy named Richie Roche from Quincy(I believe)got it and then it went to a guy in Reading named Mike Blount who was president of the Iron Horses motorcycle club.I asked Mike once where it went after that but he couldn't recall.

I've been trying to get my cousin to send me some of his old picture albums for some time now.He has a picture of the car when it was a roadster. He had quite a few cars among them the old Eldon Sidebotham car that Dave Simard owns and the old Norm Wallace car currently owned by Larry Hook.

Here's a couple of pictures of the Sidebotham car when Dick owned it;one with the hood on(which was rarely done since it tended to overheat)and one without. Also a picture of the Norm Wallace car when Dick owned it around 1970.The only way I can date it is that it had the name,"My Deuce Too" on the side which was soon replaced by,"Big Boy's Toy".Sorry for the lousy pic;it was made from a picture that was sent to me .Taken at New England Dragway in the summer of 1970.I'm riding shotgun.

The "Swinger" is Jere Sheehan's car and he started building that in high school.Jere is one of the founders of the New England Hot Rod Council and is well into his 70's and still drives the wheels off that car.I posted a pic of it along with his brother's purple 34 cabriolet.

The Merc(the Ant Crusher)belongs to Sonny Venuti(Vito's brother from whom I have received a bunch of old pics)from Lynnfield Massachusetts and was built by Kelsey Martin. The car has no hydraulics or air ride and sits low via the way the front subframe(78 Firebird)and rear frame section(65 Chevy)are mounted.Car rides like a new car.Sonny has gone through 3 new crate motors and probably has a gazillion miles on it.Has been all over the country and as far as I know the only time it has been on a trailer was when he rolled it over on the interstate after being cut off by some idiot.Crushed the roof and quarters and did an enormous amount of damage.Kelsey repaired it and I re-striped the parts that it needed.

Jeez...Ray, have I mentioned lately that I am glad you are here?
It's like have a local encyclopedia....only.....in Michigan!
Here's a few of a car with "the look"...although I know nothing about it other than the pictures are from the Ty-rods show when it was still in Hudson but moved to Sunday.
1999? 2000?
I"ll save you all my bitching and whining about radial tires and rear end width.

Do you know if the roadster was in Frankfort, Kentucky in 1975? It looks just like one Jack Burch had. It had chrome reverse and moons and chrome stock exhaust manifolds. It really turned me on at the time. Still does.

I don't think so. I believe Mick built his roadster around that time, and I know he did all the work himself....everything....all fabrication, nerf bars etc. Maybe the car in Kentucky inspired him.

eastcoast57.....Here's 4 shots of a very similar Model A coupe I shot at a Armory show probably in Newark, NJ in 1958. I fell in love with the car, but being 6'2", I could never in my wildest imagination fit all of my in it. I cleverly cropped out the show sign, so I have no idea who the owner was. Any ID would be great.

If this doesn't get your fire burning, nothing will.

I attended every car show I could find from 1958 until I went into the Army in 1963. These included Armory shows in Jersey at Newark, Patterson, Teneck, Livingston, Chatham, Morristown, a couple in New York City and a couple in West Springfield, Mass when we were visiting my uncle.

The photo quality is terrible, but with a simple camera without a flash, this is how I documented the hot rods that tripped my trigger then, and still do.Take note of the '34 5window with 2 tone paint. My memory tells me it was a light cream top and a robins egg blue bottom. Pastel colors, while not the norm in that period, could still be seen.

Any info and ID's would be great.

These are the last of the group of photos from 1958-1963. There are more, but are too washed out to even scan.
The '32 3 window coupe with double white walls is the very famous '32 built by Andy Kassa, and restored and in the protective care of our own 1935Ron in North Jersey.

Rich V, your next feat of action is to find out what happened to all these beautiful rods. Or should we call on Kirk for that job?

Randomrodder....It's my professional opinion that many of the channeled cars built in the 50's and 60's were "restored" in the 70's and 80's to either full fenderd and/or hi-boy Street Rods. Think back at how many magazine captions that refer to the builder starting with an old channeled drag car which had a new floor installed.

True and now the 70s and 80s are being found and floors are being cut.............

The 27 T in the center of the top row is from Rochester NY. I was built by Carl and Bob Austin. They would drive the car to the shows in the winter and clean it up when they got there. The car was repainted in the late seventy's candy blue and a small block installed, but everything else was the same. If anyone has old mags it is in the Feb 59 Hot Rod and some others.

Another east coast car. 1932 Plymouth from NY State. Art Russell was the owner/builder. This car was the grand national winner of,I think, 1964 ( I.S.C.A.?)
A freind of mine bought it 15 or so years ago. It was mounted on a turntable. He sold it and, unfortunately, some redid it instead of leaving it alone.

Cool thread, I love a nice east coast style hot rod. One thing that always struck me as weird though. Why so many '33-'34 coupes run a '32 grille? It just looks weird!

Here's a more traditional '32 built in the 60's by Bud Sammes in Towson, MD who ran York Seat Cover Co. It featured a complete chrome chassis and suspension. Sometime street driven, but mostly built for the ISCA show circuit, it was purchased in the 80's by one of the Jones Boys in Bel Air, MD.

I believe the reason for doing this is the fact that a severely channeled 33-34 Ford using a dropped stock height grille looks a bit awkward.Possibly that re-locating the radiator in a lower position was difficult. Also that fitting a hood(required in a lot of states back then)was difficult.Sectioning a 33=34 grille and making it look right is hard;I've only seen one or two that look good. Also it was difficult to fit a fan of sufficient size to ensure adequate cooling;a critical problem in early flatheads.

Here's one that looks good but it is also full fendered;Buddy George's sectioned 34 next to a stock height car.Buddy still owns it.

Don Hiller's chopped and channeled 34 with Deuce grille and full hood;one of the prettiest 34's ever.Haven't seen it since this show.

Here's a few more pictures that will probably be too big.

I'm not sure how "old" of a car this is but I've been seeing it around since the 80's....I think this picture is from 99?

I don't remember much about this one other than it was from CT and maybe in Cool Cars & Square Rollbars somewhere?
that merc is what did me in .. was 4 when i first saw that car at leadeast and i was hooked . still have the pic i made my dad take of it . and many years later i went back to leadeast and there she was front row .. love that merc.

Some say mine is east coast others just say its a ratrod. I was going for the east coast style when i sarted out but i think i need to do a bit more work on it. Nerf bars, motorcycle fenders, hubcaps and some shiny paint.

I was talking to a metall guy last week about some fenders so i might get them on this winter but i wont have time to paint.

That makes perfect sense, I just think the vertical lines of a '32 shell really clash with the zigzag of the firewall on a model 40. Now on a car like Hiller's with a full hood, it doesn't seem to make a difference, that looks really sharp!

safariknut...

Yes the Fred Steele deuce, an Eastern classic, rare photo in primer and prior to the tuck and roll job. Dig the chrome firewall.

The coupe has a 303 Olds with a McCullough blower. Later it got a 394 with 2 McCulloughs.

Here's a few more:

Fred Steele's yellow Deuce with the reversed Buick wire wheels on Ford centers painted in 1961.
Hoop's 40 Fordor(I believe he's here on the forum)
John Watson's 32 Tudor around 1969 when I first striped it.
John's car after it was painted yellow(I think it is still painted this color).
Ted Wingate's 32.This car was on the cover of Hot Rod along with his channeled Deuce back in the 60's.
A 33 Ford Victoria with a steel tilt nose circa 1970's.Owner unknown.
Walter Brooks' 33 sedan originally built by Walter Jepson in the 50's.Harvey Richardson's Deuce with a blown 468 inch Olds is parked next to him.Harvey was part of the Sidebotham,Richardson, and Creehan AA/GD team.

In true east coast style this car was originally not chopped (visualize it). It recieved an expert haircut about 5 years ago at East Coast Customs in Leominster Ma.

Classic period East Coast. British car type trunk latches, rolled pan, no chop, inboard mounted exhaust.

Blackout, I don't know how you do it but you post Rods after my own heart.
The first time you posted the Fred Steele roadster you said, this is for you Randomrodder and I called it as Steele's, it was like you knew exactly the kind of Traditional rods that touch the core of my very being. Keep posting them Brother.

OK guys. It's Friday night. We just got our paychecks cashed at the liquor store. Now we're gonna rap some pipes. Zip up your leather jacket, it's cold out.

I'd recognize that custom hairpin anywhere;Norm Wallace's roadster and the pic was probably taken at the 1958 Hartford Autorama.

An interesting story goes with that car:When Norm decided to get rid of the car,he traded it off for a vintage biplane.Sadly the plane was to crash with Norm piloting the plane and his son in the other cockpit.Norm was killed instantly but his son survived.
Apparently the car passed through several hands and my cousin Dick Manley bought it from a friend of Mark Rogers. We went to pick the car up on September 14th 1969(Dick's birthday) and we were on our way home with it when we got word that Dick's father had died of a heart attack that night while at work.
We found out the story of Norm's passing from Curt Hardy;a friend of Norm and fellow rodder. We also spoke with Norm's widow and she wound up giving Dick all the trophies he had won with the car.
Dick showed the car for several years;one year doing a tribute to Norm and displaying all the awards the car had won.We did a fair amount of driving the car as well.It had a few problems;one being the extremely low clearance in front(less than 3")and another a tendency to bump steer going over railroad tracks.A steering shock cured the bump steer.
The car had twin 10 gallon gas tanks mounted behind the seat with a switchover valve mounted in the center as well as a switch for both sending units.Dick finally got the Columbia 2-speed to work and the car was quite economical on the highway.Dick also added the S.C.O.T.blower with a hand made manifold(done by Bob Serozinski)and the Thickstun air filter.
He sold it in 1979 to someone in Pennsylvania and I believe that was where Larry Hook finally got it.
Strangely enough Dick never got another car and has had nothing to do with them since that one.
