I don't often touch on my life outside of old cars here on The Jalopy Journal simply because... well, it's just not that interesting. And let's be honest, this is a hot rod and custom magazine - you folks don't come here to read about the follies of ...

It's nearly 9:00 am, here in San Diego, CA. I've seen 11 patients in the hospital and 5 so far this morning in the Cancer Center. None of them thought they were going to be alive to see the holidays. I always get very emotional around this time of year. So many patients come in with family members that have flown in to celebrate good times and enjoy the company of loved ones. Their gratitude does not compare to the feelings I get when I see them persevere over their illness. Everyday I swing clubs and swords at cancer and leukemia; alas, the real soldiers are my patients who sustain the bruises and battle wounds from the surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation, and look up at me with smiles.
Congratulations, Ryan, for finally feeling well. Thanksgiving is a special time, on so many levels. Now, back to the trenches. -DD |

It's good to hear you're through it. I mean it. I've lived with chronic migraines since I was 5 years old...the "holy shit" ones that teachers thought were fake til you passed out in class. Anyway, Nobody should have to live with that kind of pain. So congrats!

Its good to hear you're doing well.
We all have so much to be thankful for in our busy world. I am glad someone decided to dedicate a day for our country to reflect in our bounty and where the source of all this goodness comes. Please forgive me for posting this but this story really warms my heart. It was a busy morning, about 8:30 , when an elderly gentleman in his 80's, arrived to have stitches removed from his thumb. He said he was in a hurry as he had an appointment at 9:00 am I took his vital signs and had him take a seat, knowing it would be over an hour before someone would to able to see him. I saw him looking at his watch and decided, since I was not busy with another patient, I would evaluate his wound. On exam, it was well healed, so I talked to one of the doctors, got the needed supplies to remove his sutures and redress his wound. While taking care of his wound, I asked him if he had another doctor's appointment this morning, as he was in such a hurry. The gentleman told me no, that he needed to go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife. I inquired as to her health. He told me that she had been there for a while and that she was a victim of Alzheimer's Disease. As we talked, I asked if she would be upset if he was a bit late. He replied that she no longer knew who he was, that she had not recognized him in five years now. I was surprised, and asked him, "And you still go every morning, even though she doesn't know who you are?" He smiled as he patted my hand and said, "She doesn't know me, but I still know who she is." I had to hold back tears as he left.

Ryan-
Glad your surgery went good. I do know what you are or hopefully have (as in no more) been going through. I've had several back surgeries and do understand. This site means a lot to me and has helped a bunch while I was on the mend. Thanks for all you have done for all of us. Enjoy your Thanksgiving. take care of yourself. Later, Dick |
