I attached a 4x4 across an existing rafter, attached 2 more vertically under the horizontal 4x4, and hung 2 chainfalls to the horizontal 4x4 (the chainfalls were FREE, that's why!). I put a 2x10 through the doors and put some 6x6 bocks on top to lift the cab a little higher.

The only problem so far is moving the Dakota under the 49 cab to fit them back together. You have to move the whole truck just to align it with the cab since the cab only moves vertically. If I were just pulling the cab off, it would work like a champ.

I did borrow a friend's engine hoist earlier tonight, so I'll have to try your method
MoparMan4GZUZ!!! But it appears that the angle of the hoist through the window may not work. I may have to remove the doors and try again...

This is a good thread for me. After already fitting a 5.9 Cummins and 6 speed into my '59 F-350, I have decided I wish to to pull the cab for some body work, welding and painting of the cab. Trying the figure out the best way to do it.
Some of these ideas are helpful. I'll post pics when i do mine too.

I have used the same method with the engine hoist. I also hang several rims with tires on the back side of the hoist to counterbalance it, especially if I extend the boom a bit..

Outside I use a forklift and a long 4X4 between the door windows, inside, the same 4X4 and a block & tackle from the ceiling...

All you need is two stop sign post and four jack stands and a floor jack. Raise cab with jack , slide sign post under cab put stands under post. Raise each side a notch at a time. Remove rear tires and slide frame out from under cab.

Have any of you built a gantry crane setup out of pressure treated lumber? I was thinking about getting some 6X6's or laminating some 2X10's to make a setup for a chain fall/winch. I want to pull the cab, bed and engine/trans for a frame swap. I have a cherry picker but some of these ideas require a good bit of luck to keep the user out of the ER..

Looking for "safe" ideas.

Inside the garage I drilled a hole in the ceiling and dropped a short length of heavy chain down. On the upstairs floor I ran the biggest steel rod I could fit through the link. One for the front and one for back. That gave me something to attach the come-a-long to.
The second one not so much engineering. A 2x10 across the inside of the trunk.
