I'm going to throw this out there simply because I've searched forever for info on this place. Moyer and Littleman are likely too young to remember.

There was a place on Euclid Ave in Willoughby Ohio, across from the hospital, just down (or up as the case may be) from the Willo Plaza called Happy Charlie's.

Anyone else remember it or know of any info on it? I want one of the little plastic Buddha's they gave away.

Mel's isn't really a chain. I think there's three,maybe four of them. All different.

The Blue Top, Miner-Dunn, and Schoops In NW Indiana. I always have to stop at In-N-Out when I'm in So-Cal or Vegas. Usually taking a cab through the drive thru going from the Airport to the Hotel in Vegas.

For as long as I can remember, Parkette Drive-in in Lexington was the place to hang out on Friday night.

Sadly, the place has been closed for remodeling since early this year, who knows if it will ever re-open

There's an article in this months Hot Rod magazine about this place. Seems the city council of the town where it originally sat has bought it and moved it back to it's home city. Check it out.

Tommy Burgers in L.A. area.... Small chain but not a franchise. You got to order a chile cheese burger ( double cheese, double meat preferably) no plain burger they don't cut it. For big chain In and Out is the best old fashion burger.

Keller's in Dallas. I ate dinner there this evening. No hotrods tonight though. A local VW club was there with a bunch of vintage Fahrvergnügen.

Danny's Bar & Grill on 72nd and Blondo here in Omaha...Amazing burgers...Double Burger with bacon and pepper jack cheese just melts in your mouth...

Oh and then for Lent there's the fish fry, and then Monday Night football is the Taco Special all you can eat for $3.45 huge tortillas, or hard shells, great meat...Better off drinking beer, because they actually charge for water on Taco night.

Oh and then there used to be all you can eat crab legs...

If your lookin' for a quick burger though Bronco's is my fave, or King Kong. They have Gyros at King Kong too, really good, as for mexican food Alvarados on 90th or in Council Bluffs is pretty damn good too, all home made at a fast food joint.

Oh our Around the Bend in Ashland/South Bend, Nebraska...really good and they have a Testical Festival for all you Oyster lovers...

There are really no Mom & Pop places that I know of around here (Phoenix). If anyone knows of a good on, PLEASE let me know. But, the best around here is In & Out Burger followed by Culvers Butter-Burgers.

Exactly right. There is a new custard place on W. Bell rd (40th-50th Ave south side of street) that I haven't tried, but I have heard it's good for that 50's-style burger ( In-n-Out is the closest to that I've found here in Phx). Where's Culver's?

Culvers is an In & Out type place. They were all over Chicagoland but they just opened one up on Alma School just South of the 60. KILLER butter burgers. If you go, make sure you try the Blackberry Malt. Check the place out.........

The XXX in Issaquah, Wa is a NW car folk hang out http://www.triplexrootbeer.com/

We stopped there Wed night pulling the sailboat. Some of the best fountain rootbeer I have had in a long time and the 58 Impala is pretty tasty.

I'VE DRIVEN 200 MILES FOR A KING KONG GYRO, AND I'M NOT ASHAMED TO SAY THAT.

Nick's daughter was on the commercials about 10 years ago. All I have to say, is that it totally got me to come in. This was when their only location was in the old Dairy Queen off Saddle Creek and Dodge.

Ah, memories...

There used to be a place in Tempe that was called MinderBinders. They had a KILLER burger called the "Jiffy Burger" where they put Peanut Butter on the burger. I though it sounded like hell until I had one. Awesome. Try it.........Put whatever else you normally would put on it as well as the Peanut Butter.

Not exactly a burger place (but they do serve burgers too) Ted's Hot Dogs in Tempe (Broadway and McClintock). they've been in business since 1927, all of their locations are in NY except this one in Arizona. They have awesome food! It always reminds me of the really good small Fair Food vendors. they cook right there in front of you and it's made to order anyway you want it. Be prepaired though, they only take cash (at least that's how it was the last time I went about a year ago) no debit or credit. Here's the website to read up on the history and see the menu and all that jazz.

In Ventura, best burger place is Top Hat on Main st-place is just big enuff for 2 people to work in,no inside seating, just a long bench on the side.Been going there for over 40 years.
Another best place--not burgers--is Tony's Pizzaria on Thompson by the fairgrounds--pizza by the slice--all you guys going to the Primer Nationals should stop by--been goin there about 40 years ,too. Local artist even did painting of Tony's with my kid,me, and my car out front.

Ya I miss that place.

I think they called the Fries "Supper Fries!" They were really just "Tatter Tots," but cooked just right.

We ain't got many good old fashion burger joints around here other than your run of the mill fast food places. So I guess it would be from the grill on my deck. Burgers are made with chopped onion and bacon and topped with hot pepper cheese. Hmmm, Hmmm Good. Short of my place, I guess I would have to say the Cheeseburger, Cheeseburger place about 25 miles down the road.

The Rodeo was a great burger joint, sad to see it disappear. Surprised nobody from North Vancouver mentioned the "Tomahawk". I remember ordering a "Chief" burger, asked if it came with fries, they said you won't have room.

Haven't lived in San Francisco for 30 years, but I still get to Red's for a burger, fries and a beer at least twice a year. Red (there were two "Reds"--I think they were twin brothers) passed away a while back, but his daughter runs the place now. Burgers are on an authentic San Francisco sourdough roll. Incredible . . .

Odd rod i agree for burgers about HO Dads.
Ho dads is pretty great. The burger was so big and greasy i actually had to call out sick to work the next morning. i was out for the count.
Anthony i agree on for The Hat on Pastrami. Simply amazing this place is. First time i was there i ordered the onion rings that of course came in "The Bag" sopping wet on the bottom with grease. then my dumb ass and band left from The Hat to go play a two our show in Orange and i felt i was going to die on stage. I loved it and always go back-

Even though Taco Lita is not a burger joint in my opinion they have the best Tacos! I ate at the Habit in West L.A. years ago, was not impressed at all! Bob's ( I know its more of a chain) has some of my favorite tasting burgers!

Hmm? Taco stands? let's try that one later on O.K. ? Some really cool old places have popped up ! thanks to everyone that has posted. I know there are some places here in Tacoma that are long , say Busch's Drive Inn( S. Tacoma Way) There was a small joint on Pacific ave in Parkland, think it was the The Hand Out, any Parklanders remember it?

Here in Joplin, we have Stogey's on E 7th Street, and 4 locations of a
local place called Babe's. All good burgers.

Then the one and only "Fred & Red's" on South Main. Been around a lotta
years. Their burgers are OK, but the best thing is Spaghetti Red at the
horseshoe shaped counter.

Let's see, start at Dick's in the U District drive 8 miles to Burgermaster in Bellevue, drive another 10 miles to Triple XXX in Issaquah, then over the hump 70 miles to McKeans in Cle Elum, stop at that little joint 20 miles down the road at the west Ellensburg exit, then turn around and do it in reverse order. 6000 calories and a tank of gas!

Went to The Kiltie in Oconomowoc, WI last night with the wife in our 55 Pontiac. Parked right in front where all of the 18 year old car hops in their very short skirts/shorts thingys place and pick up the orders. So this one tall leggy blonde car hop bends over to stick her head in the window and take our order. Her eyes got kinda big and she says "WOW, you really have a big........steering wheel!" Good thing we didn't have any ice cream yet or I would have choked.

In St. Paul, the Nook. Yesterday, we took the Merc fifty miles for burgers and the sweet potato fries at The Drive In in Taylors Falls, Minnesota. http://www.taylorsfalls.com/index_old.html

I remember the one from Napa growing up there in the '70s. The real original $6 burger except they were around $3.50 back then. Good stuff!

God I miss the habit too. Used to eat there when I lived in Santa Barbara all the time. The one downtown, was it off Milpas? And one out in Goleta too. Man, I'm all hungry now after reading this thread right before lunch.

For me, here in Indiana, it would be "Arnolds" up in Decatur, IN. But I'm movin back to Charlotte, NC so I'd have to agree on "The Penguin". And if the line is too long...which is often the case...it's off to "South 21"!! Like Chuck Berry said, "I'm sooo glad I'm livin' in the USA!!!!"

Was that just off the 10? to the north, and the training center just down the block on the other side of the 10?
Two little shacks with a drive-thru, thru the middle?

Miller's on Michigan Ave. near Telegraph in Dearborn Mi. is just about as good as it gets for a ground round, fries and a beer. No frills - just good.

Funny...I've been told my whole life that the Hamburger was invented in Athens, Texas circa 1880.

The guy's name was "Uncle" Fletcher (Fletcher Davis or something like that)...the locals thought so much of his sandwich they sent him to the '04 World's Fair in St. Louis along with a Paris, TX recipe for fried potatoes.

A NY Times reporter recorded the event and called the ground-beef sandwich a 'hamburger' after the 'hamburger steak' of which it was comprised. The Times reporter evidently misunderstood that the fried potatoes were Paris Texas 'fries', and mistakenly gave them the name 'French fries'...and the name stuck.

Anyway...I can't believe none of the Houston guys haven't been here talking about Prince's (since 1934)

My fave is Voss Barbecue. Sort of on the edge of New Hartford & Yorkville, west of Utica on 5A. Just a little walk-up with picnic tables, open April to November. Been there 70 years, people line up some nights out to the street and in front of the donut place next door. Get the steak sandwich, though, $4 gets you two pieces of the tenderest steak you ever had. Only once did I ever get one with any fat in it. If I lived in the neighborhood I wouldn't use my kitchen all summer -

This place is long gone and their burgers weren't that great, but it's an opportunity for me to post an old picture from around 1979 with my 40 and a bunch of my friends cars hanging out at Gino's because " everybody goes to Gino's, cause Gino's is the place to go" Cheesy jingle, huh?

The best burger joint I've ever been to is the Varsity in Atlanta, GA. We'll be driving up from Tampa for the Dixie Fried Show next week and you can bet that we'll be stopping at the Varsity.

If I remember right it was on Francisquito. How about #2, San Bernadino Rd. in the curve ( closed down in '65 or '66 )? My hang out was the one on Arrow Hwy., in Covina. Sadly, it's gone also....

Inthe60s in Kent Ohio it was the Short Stop Drive In . Long gone .At that time they had the butter burger supreme. Big shakes and fries .Everybody that had a hotrod or muscle car and became a legend in their own mind used to hang there! Akron Ohio, just down the road also had several burger joints that were good also, the Hungry I, The Flame and Swensons to name a few.Should have taken pictures 40 years ago, who knew!

Thats the one. They closed the original, fenced it off. had the university on the south side of the 10fwy. They dozed that and rebuilt a restaurant with inside seating and a gift shop. For the sake of originality, they should just open the 1st one as well.

Wow Kevin, Thanks! I've only been to CA once, and needed to find a legendary in-n-out burger, cause we don't have them out here. Coming out of LA on the 10 we were watching for signs of one and saw it from the hi-way. Got off and stumbled on it. I thought it was unique.
That's something that it was the #1, first one! And I wuz there
They actually ground the beef in the right side building and would carry big plastic tubs of it across the driveway, between the cars to the left building to cook it.
Now there is no reason to go back to CA.

I'm shocked no one from my area has chimed in on this one yet. As seen from a thread of mine from a couple weeks back, (http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/s...d.php?t=286008 ) there is at least that one around here. The one from the thread is a great drive-in WITH carhops and homemade root beer.

There is one actually a couple miles closer to me that has better food but it's not a drive-in and that is the Melody in New Carlisle. This joint has been around since dirt. It's ALWAYS a 20+ minute wait and it's worth it.

A little further from home is prolly Stevo's favorite place, Kay's in Troy. This is as typical of a 50's style diner as you'll find for miles. stamped and polished aluminum sheet on the walls, cool old Formica counters and stools at a counter. Killer burgers and great hand-made shakes with real ice cream.

Even further out from that is a place that will make many people with blue hair smile as soon as they hear the name; Maid-Rites, in Greenville. This place is about 40 miles from Dayton and damn near worth the WALK! It's in a tiny place that seats about 25 and it's prolly as old as the town. This is one of those kinds of places you either don't tell anyone you're going to, or be prepared to bring back a couple DOZEN sandwiches for those who know you're going. Simple as that.

The photo below shows the joint from the front and the 'gumwall'. Crazy, but tradition is that you stick a wad of ABC gum on the wall while you're there. Seriously.

Great, now I'm hungry. Hey, the coupe does have a full tank of gas...

IN N OUT #1 !

Bob's Big Boy #2 - Especially back when Bob Wian owned them. My Grandma was a friend of his and my Pop used to say I was conceived in the back seat at the car hop drive in.

Have to agree about The Hat being killa but it's Pastrami Sandwiches, not burgers that make it there.

How about Ruby's Damn good burger and the best Clam Chowder on the west coast, well that and Knowlwoods - also good Clam Chowder and the Irish Nachos rock along with the burgers

Though it's not a drive-in, here in Modesto I like Mike's Roadhouse burgers and everything else on the menu (he also has a cruise in/car show every June during Graffitti week).

I can't for the life of me figure out what the attraction to In and Out burgers is. I can't figure out if they almost have meat or almost have no meat on their burgers...Carl's Jr or even Wendy's make a far superior burger to In and Out...IMO.

In Tulsa Weber's not too bad. Fuddruckers have cleaned up their act and is pretty damn good. Red Robin sucks. Used to go to "The Point" in Dallas, was fu*king outa site. If you're from Tulsa you all remember Pennington's. Was killer.
Shit now I'm hungry at 3:00 AM and theres not anything open that I would eat. Well take that back----!

They're used to be a cool place in the Niles area of Fremont, CA called "Big Daddy's Cookhouse". It was like a mini car show/ bike show there every Saturday night. But the place burned to the ground. I always had a nice juicy patty melt. The cook would slather butter onto the rye bread with a paint brush, and then throw tons of grilled onions and cheese in there. Mmmmm

I didn't really say I don't like them, I just don't know why anyone would think they're so terrific.

If anyone was around when you could get a hamburger, fries and a coke and get change back from a dollar at McDonalds they'd know THOSE were the best fries ever.

That was when they were fried in pure animal fat. Delicious, but not politically correct these days.
