OK, I know there are a few HAMB'ers that have the fine, fine automobiles and trucks that the Hudson Motor Car Company produced from 1909 - 1957. Let's see 'em!
Here is my '37 Terraplane Model 71 Brougham, with a factory 212 Six and 3-speed with a later Hudson overdrive. I'm going to have the manifold split soon and add a set of dual exhausts with Smithy's. There is a '36 in Denver that has this set-up and sounds friggin' amazing!

No, that was only available in a coupe body. The trunk lid opened up, and the bed could be slid out to three different positions. Mine has the smooth, flat deck lid.

My Dad had a 37 (Hudson not Terraplane) with an "electric hand" on the column. I'll have to dig up a picture. My younger brother is still pissed my dad sold it ( he came in the hospital in it)

Now it is restored..dark blue with black fenders Skirts on a pickup..with really beautiful Terraplane emblems on them. |

The Hudson National are coming up in Marlboro Mass July 22-27. You should try to connect with someone from the Hudson Club on www.classiccar.com in the Hudson forum. I will post a flyer for the National as soon as I can find one

thekid49 - NICE. Where did you find an adapter to mount your 308 to a Muncie 4-speed? I've got a 308 I plan on running in my coupe, but the cork clutch disk just doesn't float my boat.
HudsonCustom - When I saw all these Hudson sisters grouped together, I thought I'd like to add you guys to my friends list - but a group might work even better ... as long as the long lost bastard Essex were included!

heres my 31 essex super six rumbleseat coupe. its a stocker, i bought it in non running condition, motor in boxes, i had every intention of sticking either a late model 4 banger or v8 in it when i bought it, never thought id have the original 6 running. now i feel it would almost be a shame to hotrod it, so i either hot rod it or sell it to some purist. i have begun collecting parts, rover v-8 2x2 offy intake with 2g carbs, bell housing, flywheel ,s10 t5 trans and an a-body 3.55 sure grip 8 3/4 rear. i have to decide what i want to run for tires and rims, and figure out what to do with some front brakes.

Here is my first Hudson, a '50 Pacemaker coupe that I bought in March 2000; which is also my avatar picture. This is after an F-4 tornado destroyed my house and shop in May 2003 in OKC. The cinder-block shop wall fell in and crushed the rear of the car, and pushed the front sheet metal over 15" from the original position. The roof was "V"eed all the way back to tha package shelf, and the decklid was similarly damaged. All of the glass would still roll up and down. The rear quarters were about the only body pieces that were relatively undamaged.I sold to a HET member in southern Kansas, who parted it out pretty thoroughly for his '50 coupe.

Hey Robert, digging on your SS (Super Six),sounds like your clutch isstuck. Somewhat common for Hudsons that sit for extended periods. If you do a search on the site below you'll find many ways to deal with your clutch. Pick one that makes sense to you and give it a go.Seems the corks on the clutch disc try to weld themselves to the flywheel after the clutch fluid dries out from sitting. Lots of ideas on clutch fluid over there too. Good luck and keep us updated http://www.classiccar.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=13 |

1936 Hudson, Not mine, I worked on the doors and hood for a time. Unfortunatly the owner took it to the custom shop I use to work at instead of my current employer, Learn from others mistakes never take a restoration to a custom shop, you never save money, and it never works out.
![]() ![]() As Far as I know it is in pieces in a garage, in the same state as the last pic. Cringe… ![]() To see a 1929 Hudson and a 1935 Packard go here, http://www.customsandclassics.com/restor.html This is my current employer the restorations they perform are amazing, very meticulous, They do customs too and that is the department I work in, however they keep them separate from the classics. Hopefully they will allow me to post pics of my metal fabrication later. Cheers, Andy |

Patrick, and guys...............thanks for starting this thread, brings back a lot of good memories, my dad bought a new 51 hudson Hornet, I was 10 at the time and can still remember the sound of that car.. we travel from Grapevine Tx to the Denison Tx area a lot back then..
I have always love the hudson, hard to beat the look of the dash and the steering wheel in those cars......... not real sure why I dont have one... I was offered a trade awhile back on one..........but.......... |

Geee,
Between the Hudson Social group here, and my new-found obsession with HA/GR cars........ I might become a regular. Here's a pic of my '49 Super Six club coupe. 308 w/single lever 3 speed. 3.07 Hydramatic rear end. The barn find of my life. Original paint and all the dents and dings that go with a life on rural roads. ![]() A shot of the what's under the hood before it got there. I also have a Super Wasp club coupe that gets the beejezus driven out of it. Here's a tidbit owned by my buddy Ralph, PaceRacer50 on the HET board. 7x'd 308 with the McCulloch. His is a fixed ratio. It was my intention to do a milder 4.5 psi setup on my '49, using the variable ratio setup. Ralph was going to turbo his for street strip use (heavy on the strip), and I talked him into the McCulloch - being as he already had one on hand and I already had a handle on its setup. Info and hardware passed down to me from an older HET member who raced McCulloch'd Hornets in the mid/late 50's. See ya'll in the Hudson Social Club. |

Well At least I can be the first Jet. This was my great grandmothers car. This is my grandparents in the early 80s. My granddad drinking a PBR. "WHAT A POSER!" HA HA Its cool having grandparents that were cooler than hell for being just who they are. My grandfather has no idea or understands why I think he was and is a Bad ass.
The jet was wrote off years ago. It really is pretty bad. Dad had cut it up along time ago to try a gasser project. I ended up with it and put it on a S10 frame and built a nice high compression 4.3 for it. It has a 700r4 with a 10 inch lock up converter and 4-56 gears on a new auburn possi. If my math is right it will turn 2600 at 65. I hope it will drill most tuners and stock 5-0s and be able to drive it from South Carolina to Indianapolis. We will just have to see. |

Gorgeous cars, I want y'all to know that. Not a vehicle in this thread that doesn't make me grin.
TheKid's '49, just makes me drool, convulse involuntarily, and wish I had the the body talent and vision he does. My favorite Hudson rod by far. Alas, I'm a gearhead, motor man, and seem to get my jollies from the mechanicals. I drove the '49 to the Hot Rod Reunion in Bowling Green and had the pleasure of meeting up with the son of Rudy Bennett purely by accident. Rudy has helped me along in the Hudson performance area for a long time for which I am deeply grateful. Randy, his son, is an AMC fanatic and had the fastest AMC built for a while. I was prodding Randy to build a Jet gasser, with an AMC V8. He already had pictures of some Jets, with the same idea. So, hold on you Jet fans - you may have a hero coming up through the ranks. Some pictures of Rudy's Ride. A turboed 262 powered '46 Hudson sedan. Like me Rudy dislikes the '46/'47 grilles, and devised his own interpretation using all Hudson parts. ![]() I reckon this engine is exceeding Rudy's expectations. Hud

Love to see all your cars! So many nice rides... Thanks for posting
Here´s a link to a picture of my ´53 Hornet http://public.fotki.com/Juppee/rando...orumble-1.html It´s got a 308 with factory dual carbs and aluminium top. Transmission is a dual-range Hydramatic. A few touches here and there, got it on the road this summer. |

I have only seen one or two others and only in pictures. It is pretty rough but being a 2 door and the lack of them I an going to do my best to save it.

I spotted a 1939 112 coupe in Matt's photos of the recent HET Nationals in MA. Long story short, it had been mine back in the late 60's. Sold it to an Army buddy from CT, who eventually sold it to Matt's uncle.
The second '39 coupe is a Super Six that I purchased from an old retired Hudson dealer in Edgewood, MD. It had real low miles, I believe in the 25K range. It went to Ken Williams who then lived in Joppatown, MD. The 1931 Essex coach was built from a body from Andy Weber, a Hudson limo chassis from Carl Weber (no relation) and a complete drive line from a hot 401 cube AMC Javalin. To make up for the extra 121" wheelbase we hand made the aprons & boards, added to the '31 Hudson hood, used Model A fiberglass front fenders, and built widened fiberglass rear fenders from stock steel parts loaned by Carl who also loaned the gas tank cover for mold making. I had Posie's fill the roof and section the rear window to give it a coach craft look. It went with me to Nebraska, was then sold to make room for my 1930 Rolls Royce Limo Street Rod. Last I heard it was in Arizona or New Mexico. I have dozens of HET hot rod photos that I will add to this thread in the next few days. |

Spent some time today pulling Essex hot rod photos from my old albums. I took these at the Street Rod Nationals, HET Nationals or at independent shows like Gatlinburg, TN

that tan 31 with the small block ford is really cool, that is the direction i am heading with my 31, full fendered hot rod that could almost pass for a stocker. wish i knew how he got the front so low, mine sits like a monster truck.

im sure you guys are getting tired of seeing mine, but here you go anyway.
my 48 ![]() ![]() ![]() shes finally getting some attention again and im in the process of redoing chop around the rear window due to the fact that i found over 2 inches of bondo back there that the previous owner used to put the curve back in the roof after he hacked the chop. my friend Dwayne is helping me by building a new panel for the back, pretty much have to build an entire new roof from scratch but i will be able to get a better flow with the rear window than i had before, still scary to look at the big hole that used to be my roof . . ![]() ! |

That '31 was owned by the old fellow in the photo who lived in El Monte, CA. He had a second Essex and bought the stock motor/trans out of my coach. Shipped it to him from Maryland and then stopped by his house on a business trip to the coast.

Don't know the particulars, but this was my great grandad's "shop truck" way back when. Wish it was still in the family.

Here is my old Hudson. It was customized by the original owner in the early 50's. Sectioned about 4 inches all done at home by the owner, his wife did the upholstery. It was still mostly all original, Twin H power & all, DAMN, I miss that car!

This is my beautiful Hudson.
Well, it's beautiful when I look at it through the "some day" tinted sunglasses. ![]() I have another thread tossed up about it, but basically I got a good '37 T-plane nose and a reasonable '46 cab, bed, and chassis, so I'm about to make some Terraplane Gumbo. |

This one belongs to my buddy Alex in Orange CA. He and a friend chopped it in his driveway. I did some of the chassis work, wired it and swapped in the 425 Nailhead along with doing the Injection conversion that looks like 97's - it's a 39 Hudson

That's one swell looking Hudson! After looking at what you did with that 4-door, I could kick my ass a thousand times. I traded a 1948 Chevy radio and antenna for a 1949 hudson 2dr & 4dr package deal. I kept the 2dr and gave the 4dr away. STUPID ME!!!!! |

I don't own a Hudson altho we had a '47 pickup when I was a kid. My uncle had Fair Motor Sales Hudson Dealership in Peru, Indiana and I remember being there when I was a kid. I have 2 things from that dealership....one is an Underwood Typewriter that my Aunt Marie used for all of the office stuff and then there is this promotional lead pencil. It has a Hudson inside and floats up and down when pencil is tilted. "The Fair Place to Deal". My keepsake.

Just got back from a vacation in Michigan. One of my stops was the Ypsilanti Heritage Museum. If you're a Hudson fan who hasn't been there yet, it's a must see! Several nice Hudsons and even better memorabilia.

Hello!
Here is my 34 Terraplane... I bought it in february and have'nt done much on it myself yet. It has a 350 from the 70's, a 4speed munchie box (with 3 gearingsticks) ![]() and a 12bolt LSD rearend. The frame is sandblasted and primed, and the rest is pretty shabby.. Just the way I like it. ![]() ![]() ![]() The other car is my 53 Olds Rocket 88...

If you're anywhere near Bill Albricht's shop, I bet you he could land you a good one... and the '46/'47's I've seen pass through there really aren't all that expensive. Pre-war models can be quite a bit harder to come by, though. |

Here is my wife's car 53 Hornet sedan, 308 .100 over with factory twin H and a 7x cam, mostly stock except for being lowered, only has 73k miles on it, I have a set of clifford split headers to put on it and it's done. My father has a 1939 hudson coupe with only 42k miles and a 1919 Essex touring car. I guess we are a H.E.T. family!

damn how is that 100 overbore holding up? get hot or what?
i cant believe i missed this, but then the pace this place moves at. im sure many of you have seen this thing slathered all over the internet but here it is again- 51 pacemaker, going back to hudson power with a hot 308 and OD, currently mish mashing hudson parts to make for a stronger transmission but keep the stock bellhousing and linkages etc. the complete pics are of how it came to me and the rest document the "decline" or me finding all the shit that was really wrong with it. and lets not forget the goodies haha!

There was a spread about 46 Ford PU with a terraplane grille, looked spot on IMO. The truck my not be 100% HAMB friendly and I dont care for the fake business door lettering, but I just loved this truck... I wonder if this guy is on the HAMB?

Hi patrick66. Thanks for bumpin' this thread back up...just found it. Not many cars here, considering the thread is from May '08, but the ones that are here are great. I guess it proves that Hudsons are fairly rare birds. Here's my '47 Super Six club-coupe. I've had it for two years. My wife and I put quite a few miles on it before the #6 piston cracked. I've got the engine out for repairs. Thinking about an engine swap. Test fitted a...I hate to say it...SB Chevy and 3-speed. I have a feeling you guys would suggest a 308 or maybe an AMC motor. But you know how it is...break down three states away...I can fix or even replace the SB in short order. We'll see. So here's my car, such as it is...not perfect, but solid and straight. - Rick

Got a kinda artsy-fartsy pic of my Terraplane today, as I got it loaded on the trailer for the trip home. Larry (46chevy) did a wiring job, brake light, signals, some paint repair, and a couple of other things on my '37, and today was the day I went to retrieve it. It was in SW Missouri, and I'm in central Oklahoma. I missed my car!!! But, it's home now, I'm going to clean it up in the morning, and take her for a spin! Wooohoo!
Rickybop, you have a neat coupe there!!!

I hate to put on my humble old metal, but here it is. '29 Essex RS Coupe, such as it is, homebuilt frame, I6 chevy with a T-5 tranny and S-10 rear end. Been two years now and counting. Thanks for the thread.

Nothing to be ashamed of there! That's a pretty decent looking project.

To Boyd Who, thanks for that boost to my morale. I have a build thread on another forum, PM me if you want the address. Regards, Perley
And my Friend Sam (Gigantor), I am so glad you finally can run a welder and have lights. Wasn't it a little difficult with candles????? haahaaa. It made a terrific difference for me when we got power. I used to load up the trailer with everything mocked up, truck it down to the shop, use the welder, then reload the trailer and truck it all back to the 'hut'. NO FUN. Sometime when you are in the area come down and have a looksie. Give a hollar if you need a hand or inspiration, or whatever! Regards, Perley |

I telly you what, BoydWho... after dicking around in the dark for a year and a half, I have A LOT more respect for the Amish and don't know how they manage to do what they do. I felt helpless.
Driving past the occasional horse-drawn carriage for sale gave me some ideas about chopping the top and channeling the buggy way down over the wooden axles. I wonder if there are Amish hotrodders. Hmmm...

Gigantor Sam! As a matter of FACT (no joke here), my wife and I were in Amish country a few years back. As we slowly passed one of the black buggies on a straight stretch, we saw two you boys laughing and watching for tourists' reactions. Why? 'cause they had fuzzy dice hanging where the rearview mirror would be in a 'rod! We STILL laugh our asses off about that!!!
Amish hotrodders!!! And, yes! Congrats on getting power. Hard to do trad lead bodywork with low-temp candlepower only!!! |

Dads 49 and my 47. Dads had his since 68 mines only been in the family since 05. Both run 440 based Mopar engines. Dads car was purchased in Colorado when he was in the Army and he drove it back to Ga., when he was discharged, towing his 65 Corvair. In the early 70's he installed a 308 six from a later Hudson. The engine was assembled by Ben B.B. Blackburn from a block he had in the back of his shop. Ben was the mechanic for Tim Flock when he won the NASCAR championship and a real Hudson wizard. That engine rests in the corner of our shop waiting to be installed in another project someday.

Once I get mine fixed up next summer, we really need to try to attend at least one event together so we can park our trucks side by side.

I've been working on my '37 Terraplane for three years but put it aside to finish my '40 Chevy.
I did a complete frame off using a Fatman M2 front end and fabricated a triangulated four link Ford 9" with coil overs on the rear. I built a 4.3 Vortec V6 and TH350 for power. |

I got one for you,.... And I would like to find it !
BE ON THE LOOK OUT!!!!! This 1937 Terraplane was built over a few months to make it to the Nationals in 1978, It was a 2 Door, it had a 40 Ford axle made to fit the front springs, A Chevy 6 and Automatic and a 8" ford on stock springs,.... It was painted a dark brown, with tan wheels (wire wheels) and trim,.... Last known location, Ypsilanti Mi. in 1979 or 1980. Did any of you see, or hear of this car ?,..... I would love to know where it ended up. Taken at the 1978 Nats

This '33 Essex Terraplane convertible is one of North Carolina's oldest hot rods.
1) Jack Thompson, who owned it from 1941-1953 and used the original modified straight 8 engine. 2) Bob Lawhon bought it in '58 and Carson topped it and powered it by 331 Cadillac. 3) 1969 at the Charlotte Custom Car Show. That was a year after I bought it and redid it but still Cadillac powered. That is also where I met Rich Venza, who signed me up for the H.E.T. club. 4) 1970, now supercharged small block chevy powered, with my infant son. 5) 1977, now sopercharged big block Chevy powered. 6) 2009, me, my grown son and his 3 sons. 7) 2009, the last picture I took of it (my avatar) before selling it after owning it for 41 years.

I really like Zombiecustoms 53 hornet. how much did you lower it, and how did you lower it front and rear? |

Few cars evoke the curves of a woman more than a Terraplane coupe from the 30's. Maybe the Zephyrs come in a close second.

The 1936 - 1937 Terraplanes are VERY similar-looking, but that is in appearance only! Same for the same years of Hudson. The '36 cars are different cars dimensionally in nearly all respects, from the '37 cars. The 1937 cars are slightly larger overall. Plus, the front and rear suspensions are completely different. Mechanically, the engines and transmissions interchange just fine, but most all else is different.

THANKS. The "bumper" was made and added because the fender lip that extends below the grille kept dragging and getting bent under (I re-did that area 4 times !!) on many elevated driveways, speed bumps, etc. So far that hasn't happened since the bumper takes the abuse.

^^^^^^^^That wagon was built a few years ago as a "what-if?" Hudson woody wagon. As you all (hopefully!) know, Hudson did NOT build a factory woody or a wagon during the Stepdown years 1948 - 1954. It is an impressive build all the way!

The front mounted GMC blower, sidedrafts, and right hand drive was a factory option, wasn't it?

There is an old woman that lives a few miles from me that has a 1937 Terraplane pickup that her husband used to drive in local parades. It is in poor condition, someone sometime in the past sandblasted the body and put a light coat of primer on it. some of it is swiss cheese now, but it is about 90% complete. She contacted me about restoring it to, as she stated, "look cute". She lives in basically a shack for a house, and doesn't have much money, but refuses to sell it. She thinks her grandson will "someday" fix it up. I've tried to buy it as have several others, but she just throws another tarp over it which only traps moisture. Her truck, I guess she can do what she wants with it. I've talked with her kids and grandkids about it, but they all say it will stay where it is for now.
