Default 1956 Corvette: Bad Blood, drag car from the 60's

My dad picked this up in Northern California back in late 2006 and he worked on it off an on and collected most of the missing parts. It has now landed in MY garage and I was wondering if anyone knows any history on this old Vette, or if any of you guys can point me in the right direction I would appriciate it. It supposedly ran in and around the Bakersfield CA area in the late 60's.

evans electric is still in bakersfield, my parents know that much but they dont remember the car, my mom may but is not sure..

my dad just told me that evans electric rebuilt a alternator for him a couple times, might be worth your time to dial 411 and and see if they can get you anything on it. he says he used to run stock cars.ill talk to my uncle. who is still in bakersfield who used to run a 58 vette drag car and see if he remembers it.

Most of us had to pass up a killer car that we would love to have now because of not having the funds.

I'm sure a Corvette purist would be drooling to get the body of that car...what a cool piece of history. Looking forward to the responses...hopefully the power of the HAMB will shed some light on this one in no time.

I have a 454 and a 4 speed for it as well as another set of complete doors with all the window frame parts and the internal door latches. Lots of extra body parts, gas tank, and a few other hard to find things.
I'm pretty sure Dad called Evans Electric in Bakersfeild and no one there remembered sponsoring a car in the 60's or early 70's.

I do remember the car but will have to do some homework to stimulate my memory more. I will ask around here more as I know a guy who raced a 57 vette here at the same time. I am connected mostly with ford guys however so it will take me a bit of time. Useless

My '57 was done similar. With the 427BB I had to ditch the heater/fan assembly on right side of firewall. I ran in it the midwest until about 1971.
Mounted high front to get more weight distributed to the rear..cause getting power down was an issue.
Sure wish I had that car.

Nope! Nothing I own goes back stock.
I wanna find a good set of slots for the back and go with some of the wide white wall cheater slicks from Firestone. I also wanna find a good removable hard top for it.
This vintage vette stuff is HIGH$$$$$!!!

the cheapest hardtop i've seen lately went for $1700. they go way up from there. i've got a bunch of spare parts for 56-7 vettes. let me know what you need, i might have it.

You'd have to want a stock/restored one REALLY bad to tackle that one. To say it would cost a forune would be an understatement. It should remain just as it is, a drag/high performance street/strip car. With almost any BBC or radical small block that would make a killer 1/4 miler. Be sure to keep us informed as you get it running.

Jerry,

Watch for a non-GM hardtop. There used to be several companies that made hardtops for the early Vettes. They all looked quite different than the stock hardtops, but some of them were not bad. They are not very expensive now because no restorer would want want on a restored car.
You are correct about early Vette stuff being expensive, but you have all the Vette stuff you need right there. Everything else can be pure hot rod.

It sure would be nice to find a picture or 2 of it back in the day so I could see what she used to look like.

HA! we're still trying to decide who's the lucky one on this deal!
He's glad it's out of his garage, but I paid less than he had in it.
I love it but it needs so much more work, and my garage is NO WHERE as nice as his.

It's back on an original frame - Ford rearend with a triangulated 4 bar, & coil overs, tubular A arm front end.

That thing is killer. IMO the 56-57's were the best looking of the early solid axle cars. Good luck putting it back the way you want it!

You might contact Jim Barnes of Barnes Custom Engines (661-327-3231) in Bakersfield. He may remember or know of that car.

The last time that car was seen was when a couple of priests were sprinkling holy water all over it under a full moon. Being the nice guy that I am, I will haul it away for you at no charge!

I'm not sure, but that may be Babe Piambinos car. He just passed away about two weeks ago. I knew him when he was into motorcycles, mostly Triumphs back in 1948, he hung around our race track. The article in the Fresno Bee mentioned his Corvette and it's name and it sounded something like that. Maybe Skipper can ckeck back on that obit.

Dude. Finally found your thread! That thing is kick ass! Seeing cut fenders like that reminds me a little of the later vette that was in the garage of the house we're buying.

Seems you are local....what else do you have that might help?
Maybe a large box of inspiration?

Alright - another Vette guy. Don't restore - there's enough boring stock Vettes around. Build it and make a few passes at one of the hot rod drags - you'll have f--- ball.

Man, that thing is cool... I've seen a lot of vintage drag car images and videos in my day and I don't think I've ever seen it...

I guess since I'm not having any luck finding anything out on its history I'll just keep the name and make it look like this.

I think this is the coolest vette I've ever seen.

Yeah I scrapped the wide whites idea when I saw this Malco Super Vett.
I've finally decided to get to work on mine.
It's not gonna build it's self and nobody has called Chip Foose to come and fix it on television, so I guess it's up to me to get it going again.
Either that or I need new friends!!!
At least if I do it, I get exactly what I want.

Found a picture of Chris Lang's "MALCO SUPER VETTE" in 1973. He was racing in a two-day Modified and Super Stock event run at "Drag City" in Ringold, Georgia

Wax, rubbing compound, and some detailing and it will all come together. It's a great project.

Be sure to keep that handsome high-performance steering wheel. I'm sure that was what Corvette had to compete with Ford's dished wheels of the mid-50s.

What a great project - hope all the 'vette snotties just eat their hearts out when you come thundering down the street...

Well it's getting a 454 cuz that's what I have.
I've been working on it for a few weeks now.

I'll be at the Ft Worth swap meet looking for parts tomorrow.
Need a pair of coil overs and a tranny crossmemer.
Maybe a pair of window regulators?
Oh and some motor mounts..........maybe the tube crossmember tube kind.
I'm sure I'll find some other stuff I don't even reaize I need until I see it.

Jerry.

The trans crossmember is only 8 or 10 inchs wide. It bolts in and you can fab one real fast from tubing if you want. It just bolts to the X in the frame.

The mount shown is for the original BW 4 speed , in 62 there was a bracket that alowed the use of a passenger car trans.

Jerry.

If it was me dumping a 454 into one of these old tubs, I think I would go with Motor Plates . These old frames may not like the twist of the side mounts . GM never had side mounts in them.

On the front

Or

And a mid-mount at the rear of the block.

Now if that doest't hold her down ......................

Dude... If you got your car running in the condition its in, they would sit on mine to look at yours!!! Trust me. I know I would. Do yourself a favor and look long and hard at this before you go changing that car to much. Install motor...wash... and drive! Very cool car.

More trivia. Bill Bowman, a fellow in St.Catharines, Ontario owned a '56/'57 Vette powered by 425hp 409cid with a Muncie 4spd in the mid '60s. Have no idea where it is now.
Good luck on your project. It's your's. Do it your way.

I'm pretty sure Dad called Evans Electric in Bakersfeild and no one there remembered sponsoring a car in the 60's or early 70's.

Evans Electric was started by the Hammer Family in Fresno. They are still there. Large motor rewind business and auto parts distributor. I went to high school with Evan Hammer the 3rd AKA JJ. Great people. The office in Bakersfield most likely will not remeber the sponsership because they were based out of Fresno.

Shocking by today's standards, but that was typical of the going prices back then. I bought my 57 Corvette in while in Southern California in early 1971 for $500. It had one burned piston, so I rebuilt the 283 and drove it for the next eleven years -- including several trips across the US. Wish I still had it. The appreciation of these cars really started to take off in the late 70s.

I enjoyed this car the most in the early years while it was still cosmetically a bit rough, before these cars became so valuable. I went restoration crazy in the late 70s, building it into a fuelie clone/4-speed 283. Then the fear of driving it and where I parked it stepped in. I still valued the car, but the charm of the earlier years diminished. I bought it originally because I have always liked the 56/57 single-headlight Corvettes, and didn't care about potential appreciation value or what people thought of it then. And there were some scornful comments in those first years. I liked it when other people looked at it as just an old car.

In recent years, I've looked for a C1 Corvette roller to build into a hot rod the way I would have done in the 60s. But current prices are insane. So my SBC 388 and M22 Muncie went into the old Ford.

That thing is so tough. "Bad Blood"....perfect name too. It would be a pleasure to see it going down the track.
