Just got my new bead roller from woodward fab. Its weak and flexes alot so need to gusset the bottom and top. Looking for ideas on how to make it look cool at the same time. Post your pictures please
This is what you need, and there are several other threads on bead rollers: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=137858&highlight=bead+roller The Pro-Tools kit Louie S. and I built: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=236592&showall=1
Ok I don't show this to just anybody but here goes. This is a crude unit but it gets the job done. It will throat a 24" piece without flexing>>>>.
It is a tubular motor from a roll down hurricane shutter. The things have torque for days and are four wire so there is a forward and reverse. I can feed that machine 16ga and it does not hesitate.
I use an older pexto. They are a hand crank machine so two man operation is preferred as the metal wants to pull away as you are cranking.
I tried 16ga (more that it's rated for but what the Hell), it wanted no part of that! Your machine must be very stout. I wonder how long the dies will hold up to that?
Richard, I never said it did a good job on the 16 ga. It flexed and made weak beads but that motor didn't skip a beat. The only reason I powered it is because I can't find any help around here. Everyone loves to come over and sit around the pool and drink my beer but bring out some sheetmetal and they look at me like deer in the headlights...........hmmmm....Perhaps I need MORE beer!
Where would one find a motor like that? And what are the specs? Right after I typed that I found a few on ebay....they have some specs on it. I really want to power my bead roller.
Yes it's a pexto, One hp, Triple reduction transmision with foot or hand clutch control I love this machine
Here is my Woodward fab roller: It is powered by a Dayton Gearmotor I picked up for 65.00 on Ebay, I added the direction switch up top , and bought a foot switch to run it. The Stainless in the above pic is 16 ga, I have rolled beads in 14 ga steel, got a little slow, but still made it in 1 pass. The only problem is the weight, its a heavy Mofo, the top, back and bottom plates are 1/2" X 5" plate and the box tube reinforcements are 1/4" wall. it does NOT flex at all.
Murfman, it looks like you could roll a bead in a tank turret with that bad boy. Unionville, if you were asking me about the motor, i'll post the specs when I get back home. I am out in Phoenix for a few days.
Here's mine.....just a Harbor Freight unit, beefed up with some scrap tubing. Works nice.....but I would like to add a small wheel for the adjuster.
When I make dies for my Harbor freight unit I use a 7/8 drill for the center hole. I don't know about the rest, but I know Mitler Bros are different. Here is mine by the way. I don't have any pictures of the whole thing at once... And I did 16ga in this. It was pure abuse and I won't do it again. You would need ball bearings on the shafts for sure. The frame handled it though.
