I'm not a super tuner but I can get my shit to run pretty good on the street. I took some pictures as I synced the pair of 97's on the Stude motor. Some may find it interesting.
. . The victim. A 34 Ford P/U with a 55 Stude. engine and dual 97 carbs. I bought the truck running. It ran ok but the mechanicals of the truck weren't as nice as the truck looked. . . The first thing I did was disconnect the rod that linked the two carbs together. The set screw was loosened so the rod will slide in the connector. I also disconnected the throttle linkage to the gas pedal so that there isn't any resistance while adjusting. . . Here is the tool I like to use. Some have used the Unisyn tool for years and it works fine too. I just find this one easier to use. . . I put it on the front carb and this is what I got...Zero, Na da, nothing. The guage is reading no air flow. The engine was idling off the rear carb only. The rear carb was showing near 12 on the gauge. . . I screwed in the idle adjusting screw holding the gauge on the carb until it started to get a reading. Now the engine is idling too fast so I backed off on the rear carb screw. . . The red line between the 8's is the vane inside the tool that moves up and down with the air flow volume. It's now a simple matter of adjusting the idle screws up and down to syncronize the carbs. When the engine is idling nicely with both carbs reading the same on the gauge you're done. Lock the set screws that link the 2 carbs together, hook up the throttle linkage and pop on the aircleaners. The truck was running ok so I had no idea they were that far off until I checked it out. It won't make a big deal in the performance of the truck but I have the peace of mind in knowing that it's right. You only need to do this on 2-2 set ups or six twos with progresive linkage. (sync the 2 center carbs together) The end carbs on 3-2's and 6-2's with progresive linkage need to be slam shut so no syncing is necessary. If you are running a Man-a-fre or some other 4 carb direct feed set up' be prepared to spend some time adjusting the screws. All 4 carbs affect the engine idle. It just takes time. Pretty basic stuff but if you've never tried it, don't be scared ![]() |

. Your basic 34 Ford P/U, 259 Stude engine, T-85 3 speed and an 8" rear. It's a nice piece that I wish I could take credit for building. |

I'm not sure. I've had this one for 30 years. I'd try Holley. I was told they are still available. Mine has a flat rubber gasket that fits the 2 bbl carbs. Drive her up here. We can do it in 20 min.s

Looks easy enough, now to find the synchronizer. Do you make house calls to the midwest?

Uni-Syn's are like 8-12 bucks... VW/sandrail places that sell cheap stuff will have them. Definately not as fancy as that holley one.

Can that Holley tool be used on side draftcarbs or is it gravity sensitive? Oh, your truck looks pretty darn good.

I'm not sure I'd have to look at it to see. I'm not sure if there is a spring inside or not. When I recommended this tool before, someone found the same basic tool with different style adapters on the web someplace. They may make one for the side drafts. You might try Googling it.
