That is too weird- I was telling my pops about the British show Top Gear this weekend, and how they played soccer with subcompacts, and he pops off with-"ever heard of Auto Polo?", and then goes into a 20-minute dissertation about the cars used, and how it was played, etc. I'll see if he has any similar articles about it and post them here.

can't post pics but they played auto socker with an old round water bouy about 10 feet around. The cars had big rounded hoop roll bars so they would roll completely over if tipped .They would push the ball around with the cars !The roll bars were steel wagon tires most of the cars were model T s stripped of their bodys

I vaguely remember that the early NSRA meets they usta have a game where a passenger in a rod would polo a ball around a slalom course with a push broom(?)

Probably can't get "insurance" for anything fun any more

Thats the stupidist thing I think i have ever seen, from thier stand point of course, hillarious from here. I thought some of those early board track racers were crazy, but thats just nutts! Anyone know how fast they got going? And to think, no pads or helmets, I dunno whether they were "real men" or "real stupid":D It would be a funny band name.

I have never heard of anything like this.

This looks like something that may have went on at a BSM party a few years ago!

Probably true! You could always do it at night and use a ball of fire!

Any idea how long of a time period this was considered a "Sport"?

    Wow

Not the same but the local Circle Track used to have 'Auto Ball' in the infield with 70's vintage cars (refugees from the Demo Derby) and the ball was bigger around than I am tall (I'm 6'3").

Is it just me, or do those pics look retouched? Check the weirdness by the left rear wheel of the car on the left. And is that a plank holding up the T on the right?

And how come the cars are in perfect focus, but the guys are blurry?

yep...that and the drive by and poke a potato with a spear while negotiationg a road course....stab & steer. They also used to do a gymkana (sp) where the driver was blindfolded & the pasenger would direct them thru the course.
That was before the days of sensable shoes & fat old guys pontificating on how they invented hot rods.

like to see 'em try & pull THAT off today:eek:

That is freaking cool! I think the fact that it isn't played anymore tells alot. Sort of an early version of the Darwin Awards.

You mean it doesn't anymore?? A tennis ball soaked in lighter fluid would be cool being hit around a parking lot by guys in '32 roadsters and crocket mallets.

We did that thru the street of Blanding, UT this past August. Sleepy little town with not much going on. I had about half a dozen people in Big Olds, I was blindfolded and ChevyGirlRox was telling me where to go.:D

I think we're going to do it in her car next time with me telling her where to go;):D

I saw a show proabably 5 years ago about some guys still doing this. They used Model A and Ts'. Made me cry to see them cut the complete cars apart (with torches and sawzall's) just to get the cowl & chassis and then weld crap all over it.

I attended the 1976 NSRA Nats in Tulsa when I was a kid. They were doing something out in a big parking a lot like Auto Polo. They may have been roadster jousting. The driver drives around a course. The pasenger hangs out the other side and tries to pop baloons (with a sharp pole) that were tied to the poles that mark the course.
