Those Devin bodied race cars represent the best period in sports car racing. Back then you could actually compete with a homebuilt hot rod. Then came Jim Hall and The CHAPPARALL and all that WING stuff and TECHNOLOGY. They call it PROGRESS! Wish I could buy an old devin body and build a modern day street version and see how many people would actually know what it is! THEY WERE COOL!

Jim Zag, get a copy of the book "Chevrolet Racing" by Paul Van Vulcanburg sp. There was a Devin Bodied car that ran PHA, PA. Hillclimb Assoc., back in the 60's and 70's. It was called the Blue Goose, Corvette powered. I think there's pics on PHA site.

I'll dig through my stack of disks and find the photos of the one I had. Devin bodies look good, but not on a shortened '50 Ford chassis with a Flathead sticking out of the hood.

there was one for sale here in the bay a few months ago. fairly reasonable priced for a race car with "history". This one had TR-2 running gear.

most of them look pretty darn cool. every once in a while the bodies pop up for sale. wouldn't mind building one as a tube frame special like so many of the later 50's specials.

hmmm...and I know where there is this set of Borriani's just like metalshapes pictures.

The Devins that were probably the most well known were Joe Lunati's "Trouble Maker" drag car, Ak Miller's 289 and 427 Ford Pikes Peak cars, and Dean Moon's "Moon Beam" bonneville/drag race car. Richard Boone, who starred as Palladin, in "Have Gun Will Travel" had one, also.

I have personally had three bodies, all the "kit version" of the Corvette powered SS model.

I have assisted in 4 projects....

A build up of an "SS" body. We built the chassis, with early Vette engine and trans, all Jag suspension, and duplicated the hinges, latches, and top bows.

The first production "C" model, with Corvair power (not completed yet)

I saved enough to piece together an SS body. When I win that damned lottery, I'll build myself the ultimate "Chevy Cobra"! :-)~

The last production "C" model, owned by a former Bill Devin engine supplier. Now completed.

And finished construction on a car started in '58 by Indy legend Roger McCluskey. It was based on the largest "kit" body, then stretched.

Here is the "SS".

When I was living out in Denver, about thirteen years ago, there was a guy that had one there and would bring it to all of the local shows and cruise nights. It was bright yellow with a radical small block Chevy in it that would suck you o the seats. It sorta had a nose up stance to it.

I don't have any "C" model pictures in the computer, but they looked like the VW powered "D", with no grill opening, and a "boat like" front body shape.

Here is the Roger McCluskey car, with gas welded chrome-moly tube chassis, '58 Vette motor, Fish brand "floatless" single barrels, and a Dynaflow trans.

Here is a little trivia.

Bill Devin was a race driver for the Ferarri factory team.

He was one of the first to enter the fiberglass body business, and sold about 2 dozen different sized versions. Many were made using modular molds, so they could be made bigger or smaller.

A Topolino based Sports Racer.

The original Devin body was pulled of an Ermini, not a Stanguellini. In fact, the nº 16 car that Metalshapes posted a picture of looks like an Ermini (see the "E" inside the grill.)
It was rumored that the Ermini's body was itself a copy, off of the Ferrari (either 166 or 212 if I recall correctly) that Dino Ferrari designed a new body for...that would be the prototype Monza-style body.

Thanks for the extra Info.

I've heard it claimed it was, and also that it wasn't.

Now we know what it really was..

Very cool...

Cool photos you posted, by the way. You always seem to dig out some good stuff.
I think I can recognize most of the cars...
The first two look like Mille Miglia shots, at least the numbering style on the cars would lead one to believe that.
The third shot...is that the Tourist Trophy? 1955 or 1956?
Fourth photo is one of the cars owned by the Stanguellini family or museum or foundation or something or other.
Fifth shot, MM retro, 1100, Nipponese-owned.

I love these types of threads.

Cris

I had the pleasure of watching this car race at SIR her in WA last year. Talked to the owner of the car for a bit. Not only is the body insanely beautiful, but the car just sounds ungodly good. Small-block with Hilborn injection...and it has an exhaust pipe for each cylinder. I heard it on the track, and it had the most unique sound...beautiful.

Hey guys, it's nice to see that Devins are still appreciated. I've been a Devin owner for over 25 years now and it never gets old! My Devin is a 1961 "D" Roadster, restored in 2000. It has a 1776 VW powerplant which is very reliable and has enough power to give most cars out there trouble light to light. Anyway I've attached two pics of it, hope I did it right. Happy holidays to you all!!!

Gents,

I own Devin C #DC 1001-4 which I bought in 1998 from Bill Devin through some great freinds of his that were assisting him.

I am in interested in Devin information, certainly info on Devin Cs and also info on the Devin C a Pete Woods drove in various USAC events as well as Pikes Peak.

I am currently prepping my car for entry in VRG track events as well as hillclimbs, rallies and autocross. I live on the east coast and there are a lot of fun events here.

Thanks.

Welcome to the HAMB, I had a rough Devin about 3 years ago. There are a couple of guys one in Connecticut and another in New York with several of them. Hope to see you at a Lime Rock event.

Are these rare? I know where one is stashed away in an industrial area and I'm pretty sure it can be bought. Probably in about the same shape as the one in the Samba ad.

Not rare maybe just different, depends on the basis for the car construction/history since MOST never saw any type of competition

For those of you that have experience with these cars. What production car windshield will fit? Does an early Corvette roadster one work? I just aquired a body & plan on building it with my son. When he gets back from the Persian Gulf in July. I have access to the molds for the "W" sized body. Hood, trunk, doors etc. We plan on geting a Spitfire to use for the frame & suspention. Not sure of the engine/trans combo yet.
Thanks Speedy51.

A little rough? I've seen dirt clods that looked better. The body has been choped & modified in many ways. rear wheel flares, doors glassed shut The dash looks like it's been raised etc etc etc. Just go to E-bay motors & put in "devin" it'll come up

After studying the pics I think what I have in the backyard is a Devin body cut in half right through the doors, are they metal or fiberglas?

Hi Cliff Reuter etceterini.com here. We have a 1951
Devin bodied Bandini Siluro racing car to add to the
thread:

Also my web site www.etceterini.com has sections on etceterinis, Devins, 1950's Hmod racing cars, 1950's SCCA racing results, and more. Take a look when you have time.

The pictures from your post are of an Ermini rather than a Stanguellini. Please email me at cliff@cliffreuter.com when you get a chance because I'm VERY interested your pictures.

Thanks!

I have a 58 Devin Corvette Special. I have had it about a year and am trying to find some history about the car. From the stickers and other things on the car it has been raced on the Vintage sportscar circuit for several years. It appears to have a Chevrolet frame (highly modified) and a Corvette 283 with 4 Stromberg 97's. The engine is mounted at an angle so the 3rd member is offset to the right rear side.

I hope this works, it's my first post here. This is my Devin special and I'm trying to track down it's history. I just bought it on ebay from someone in Florida. It was built on a 1953 VW chassis. I was told it once had a Corvair motor installed and the paint was originally a dark metallic blue. Any more info. would be great. Thanks, Kreg

Hi guys
metalshapes and etceterinidr have got the essence. I am attaching a doc file giving up to date URLs of the Ermini. I hope. In 1955, Tony Pompeo imported a 1100 cc type 357 Ermini. Jimmy Orr drove it in '55 or '56 SCCA Class G races, without blistering success. In 1957, owned by Bill Dickson and Bill Bunce, it was raced by Lew Florence. By 1958 it was transferred to Tom Fox, who continued to race it in the Pac NW. I took many pix of it in Wash State.
While still in California, Bill Devin made molds from this very tipo 357, in '55 or '56. Anything purporting to be a "1957 or 1959 Devin Ermini" should look EXACTLY like the pix in the URL list, or like Clliff Reuter's fiberglass body. Since Devin made other styles of fiberglas body, be careful. Also, the Devin was modified in shape for various uses. Except for the Devin SS, a "Devin" is just a body shell - not a car. A modern vintage 1990 so called "Ermini", with a metal modern shape vaguely like the real Ermini/Devin, but with Alfa Spider suspension, drivetrain, instruments, and a square tube space frame is circulating the US. It has not a single component from the real 357 Ermini, but is usually entered as one, or as a "Devin Ermini". It is a poster child for the "air car".

The air car "Devin Ermini" not only has no part of an Ermini, or accurate recreation of any part of an Ermini, but it is aluminum bodied, not fiberglas, and has little resemblance to Devin, either.

From my Understanding, AK Miller built a lot of the Devins in California. I have the 427 he won the Pikes Peak climb. My Uncle purchased it from AK Miller back in the 60's as a potential street rod but never did much with it. It is in my parents pole barn waiting for me to work on. It still has the 427 supplied to AK by Ford. I was told it came from the Arizona Proving Grounds fot the race. It has the four speed manual with the 1963 Corvette IRS.

15 years ago there was a Devin SS outside of Willow Creek, CA. I saw it once then, didn't have much interest at the time, other than the name. I would bet it's probably still there, although i could never find my way back to where it was. It belonged to a friend of a friend at the time that I probably haven't seen for 13 years.

Welcome to the HAMB. Pics sure would be nice. Don't you think now would be a good time to get this one going again?

I have four Devins, and the Devin medallion you have looks nothing like the ones I have. I was fortunate enough to meet Bill and got to know him pretty well. He gave me two medallions to make certain I had enough for the cars. The Devin I bought in about 73 has a few differences from the one I bought years later at Pomona swap. Bill D told me my early car was one of the first 5 out of the mold. There are at least 4 big differences. FYI

I had an opportunity to buy one a few years ago, but couldn't put together the cash. Wish I had.

There used to be a black one that ran at Westwood in the early sixties, quite successfully. FE powered IIRC.

JamesG, That was my yellow Devin here in Denver. Website: devinspecials.com has it and many more Devins. Also featured devinspecials has even more photos of mine and other Devins. Warren Harrison (1957devinspecial)

I was under the impression that the Devin bodies came from a mould that was "adjustable" for length to accomodate wheelbases from Crosley to Corvette to early Ford to 50s Caddy etc.

Default Re: Devin Bodied Cars---any Photos Out There?

I was just recommended to this site and Devin thread and found a picture of my own car here (post #5 by metalshapes, yellow car in the lower left corner). I have spoken to a couple Devin owners who have posted here but have read about more now. I am specifically intrigued by the dark car in the first post as it has the uncommon long hood scoop that so far I have only seen on mine and one other unfinished body. My car has spent the last 13 years in the barn in the photo but will be coming out soon.

I think I am now only a few months away from starting my Devin restoration and am doing some research for the project. My car was a drag racer at some levle and has a tech inspection sticker from the 1964 US Fuel & Gas Championships in Bakersfield, CA. Some internet research has provided a bit of background on the event but I would really like to find an entry form or race results from that event. Anyone know where such archival info could be found?

My car is a 100 inch wheelbase early '50s Mopar frame with a 327 Chevy engine and a 3 speed manual transmission. The car was raced then titled later in Texas for the street in 1967. I'd love to find anything about it's drag racing history.

You might check on http://www.forum.forgottenfiberglass.com/ There is some info there.

I had a Devin body in the raw fiberglass about 30 years ago (a friend still has it) and it would make for a great looking car but was well beyond my skills at that time.

Nothing beyond I think it's from somewhere around north Georgia. I'm a big fan of the old Devins; wish I'd hung around to get a shot of the engine. It ran pretty strong. HogMountainDave on here may know more. He was there that day and he's from Georgia.

Yeah, I was thinking Kellison, just couldn't remember the name. A local guy drag raced one in the 1960's, then cut it up and tossed it in a dumpster, glad to see that one survived. Bob

Here's one (to be) under construction - hopefully starting next year. Never used, "large" body - for use with "American" components as stated in their literature. Plans are tube frame, Jaguar E type front suspension, an old 350 race motor and muncie, 9 inch. Stay tuned........

The Devin Registry documents and celebrates the cars of Bill Devin. It's a great way to see the creativity and uniqueness of these cars. It's free and there are no passwords required. Just E-mail me your name, picture and cars information and I will post it. For the production cars a serial and/or chassis number should be included. Also, let me know if you would like me to post your E-mail address or website link. I do not make claims to the authenticity of the cars posted. We are using the honor system here and it's just for fun.
