Almost every Willys I've ever seen has either been a gasser or a pro-street. On occasion I've seen a stock one. With all the nice 3 window taildraggers out there, I wonder if anyone has built a custom out of a Willys.... I just stumbled across this one, and it's probably my favorite Willys......not really a custom, gasser or pro-street. But DAMN, it's cool ! Todd
Yeah, that car rules... That said, I think the Willys is just too short and stubby to make a proper custom.
Sounds like a challenge for the photoshopers...... Maybe a little chop, lengthen the rear fenders, skirts......
There was a navy blue one with whities in rolls/pleats back about a year ago. I think it had cheater slicks on it too?
I think I saw this one for sale a few years ago. It left an impression! If I remember right it was hemi powered. The subtelty is amazing. Definitely not another belly button tubbed/pro-street Willys.
Yeah, that one is not really anything but clean & beautiful. I'm not quite sure what category it would fall in but if the were about 12" added to it's length it would make one hell of a custom. What's movin' this thing engine wise?
The Rod Shop makes one called the" kingpin" Glass body. It has a 2" chop all smooth body. There is not that much difference with only 2" chop but if you look at it, it will give you some ideas on a custom. Thanks BOBBY FORD
Here is a bone stock one in for a tune up. The owner has at least a dozen that are factory original, untouched, unrestored survivor cars. He drives them all. I'd love to get ahold of one and give it the once over.
this one is from the hamb-the poster was in northern europe. I remember a red tail dragger with skirts, on the monster garage episode, where they built the model a on the east coast.
Why would it not make a proper custom? They have a similar shape to a 40 ford (don't jump my ass on that one) and 40 fords make great westergard style customs! The guy collects all things Willys. He has an amazing collection from what I hear.
The proportions mostly... Willys are tiny and I think by the time you got one chopped and stretched to the right shape it would be awfully hard to fit in... While not a westergard style, I certainly like the sedan above.
That's actually what made me think of this topic. If a '35-'36 Ford 3 window makes a killer custom, and a '40 Ford makes a killer custom why not a Willys ? I agree with you, it's profile almost suggests a 3 window '40 Ford coupe. It would be really different, and you would'nt see too many Willys like yours at a show. Imagine a 2.5" chop in front 3"-3.5" in rear, skirts, rear fenders lengthened a few inches, WWW, stock wheels with baby moons and trim rings..... Rikster ??? Where are you ???? Todd
I see he opted for the "blower delete" package, huh? They're cute stock, never really seen one stock before.
I think the top one's a hot rod through and through, it ain't a custom. There's a red one up in NY that's owned by a Beatnik, it IS a custom, I got no pics though.
I can see what you are saying. Someone should try though. I bet it would be killer if he or she were small enough to fit in it!
I built a plastic model '41 coupe as a custom 30 years ago. Used a Stone-Woods-Cook Revell kit and chopped it. Also filled in the rear wheel openings, cause you can do that with a model. IIRC it looked good. I think the black coupe at the top of this thread is the one built by Jerry Hagens. If it is, that car looked pretty much like the blue stocker shown here when he started, except it was green. Definitely not a custom, it's a sedate hot rod all the way to the Hemi core. Edit: Yep, that's the Jerry Hagen's car. I see the '32 Cabriolet he built right behind it, and I'm sure he said the same guy bought both from him.
Yeah, not sure of the slicks though....car was in Europe I think??? Really cool.... A Willys as a mild custom......hmmmm.....the roof is kinda similar to a Zephyr, I'm thinkin' no chop, lowered in back with skirts, filled grill opening, replaced with a LaSalle, no wait, a Packard grill.....hmmm.....
love the trim and wheels on the black car - but replace the wheels with the usual 18/20 billet deals and I bet no-one would be liking it... funny how a set of wheels can change a cars personality so completely.
Don't feel bad, I have a shitbox 30mpg FWD Cougar for my daily 140 mi. commute myself. I just tell people it's my sister's car. <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->
