I need to find a source for some plexiglass tailight material. Several years ago I bought a piece that was about 4" X 18" X 1/8" for about $30.00, can't remember exact size or price but that seems close. I haven't been able to find it since. I saw an article in Street Rodder I think where they used diffuser panels and glued it to red plexiglass, seems to work but I would rather find something 1 piece.
There was a production Ford pick up,with the right prism stuff all the way across the middle of the tailgate.Don't know the year.
48" flourescent lamp fixture lense panels such as what you see in a drop ceiling work great. cut to size, spray with candy red. bingo.
I've seen the plastic material used that you see in most 2'x4' fluorescent light fixtures. It has the cross-hatch pattern that I think you are referring to. Most home stores have it readily available. It can be used behind a piece of red plexiglass for the look of a tail light. Malcolm *edit* haha... or try the method that NRchopshop listed above....
I used to get material for custom lenses from a place in west Los Angeles called "Solter Plastics." They've got a ton of plexi, lexan and lucite materials...
Here you go, dude: http://www.alumilite.com/index.php?page=show_info&type=HOWS&id=48 Also, for LED guts: http://www.lambertenterprises.com/custom.html Enjoy! ~Jason
Thats all great info so far, especially the sites you posted Jason, what Im looking for is flat lens material to put behind a third brake lite Im making. I think I got lens material from Yogis last time, but it's been several years ago and the don't list it anymore. Anyway thanks guys and if anyone else knows where I can get this stuff in sheets I'd appreciate the info. Billy
Oh, flat? Here ya go: These three guys can actually make the cuts for you AND sell you the plastic: http://www.jfreeman.com/acrylic_polycarbonate.html http://www.rplastics.com/plasticsheet.html?gclid=CPDVo7j1jJECFUV0OAodyyoyig http://www.interstateplastics.com/materials/acrylic.aspx Or here's an eBay store where you can buy red sheets: http://stores.ebay.com/eStreetPlast..._W0QQcolZ4QQdirZ1QQfsubZ3091533QQftidZ2QQtZkm Remember, when working with this stuff, don't forget the Novus Plastic Polish - it's some kick ass stuff: http://www.novuspolish.com/ ~Jason
That would be an '85-'86 Ford pickup, it was flat. The later trucks had them as well but it was curved and some of them were smoked instead of red.
Thanks to everyone thats posted, some really great info here, but Im looking for red flat plastic or acrylic sheet that has the prisms or little pyramids or diamonds or whatever the hell they are molded on one side. They help make the light brighter and disquise whats backside. I'll post som pics of a glass lens to try to show what Im looking for. Thanks, Billy
You may drop one of those 3 places in the post quoted a call - if they don't have it, they can get it. Never underestimate the power of the "guy who knows a guy". ~Jason
Think this stuff would be able to be formed a little bit if you added some heat to it? I need to make a hemispherical tail light lens, and I want the prisms in it.
Don't overlook cutting a piece out of a larger tailight. The scrap yards have tons of cars with broken tailights. They're busted can't sell 'em. Many newer cars have huge expanses of tailight plastic. Break off a piece. Heck if your third brake light isn't too big, there may be a piece big enough laying in the scrapper's parking lot.
