Danny Kladis and the GranCor Miller-Ford still holds the record for an L-head engined car...probably forever. Of course, not so long ago we thought the same about pushrod engines but Ilmor-Mercedes certainly changed that.

One of Andys Grancor Indy mills, in all its flatness and splendor.

Hot shot IMCA sprint car driver Marv Pifer takes a run at Indy 1956. Proving, once again, that race cars are like women; you can shower them with money and affection, but sooner or later their gonna turn on you.

I've seen the originals of some of these pictures, and heard the stories right from Kladis as I listened to his stories as a kid. He was proud of that record. I was there a lot since we had family connections, racing connections, etc... There were pics of him sitting with Clark Gable also, he may have done some driving in one of the movies...but not sure.
And yes....he thought back then the flatty record was safe for awhile... |

Came across some more Stoodie-baker stuff. 1956 and Lindsey Hopkins brings his old Lesovesky dirt car along to Indy now equiped with a DOHC Stude. Don't know much more about it but is shown as a DNQ with Dick Rathmann up. I've never seen a picture of the whole car with that motor in it so, for all I know, it may have ever even left the garage. Kinda interesting though.

"Rookie" driver tests were introduced in 1936, and the gent in the picture with the Hopkins V8 was the first driver to pass. The AAA man in this picture is Harry Hartz, by the way. To the left, Tudy Marchese, I believe.

Wish I knew!
Seriously and to explain, years back I quite accidentially stumbled across a obscure web site that had bunches of Indy pics from the 40s into the 50s. By obscure I mean it wasn't at all related to auto racing and wasn't a picture site like photobucket, fliker and the like. Being somewhat a computer rookie at the time I just bookmarked it and paid no more nevermind to its subject matter or address . Needless to say, not long after, that computer took a major dump and is now long gone. Fortunatly I had put a lot of pics on a disc to save computer space and just recently came across the disc. I've been looking for that site again and if it still exists theres bunches more pics I didn't save,I just don't know where to look now. Anyhoo, I've been going through the disc checking and cross-referencing to see what they are as I didn't do a very good job labeling them. The only other ones I think are of Andy G's car are these 2 but they are pretty piss poor. Looks like he may have had mechanical problems too as its about to go on the hook.

I heard Rootie and Mr. Peabody use "The Way Back Machine" and Rootie takes all of these photos himself!

Perhaps the greatest example of an unrestored Big Car running currently in Vintage Events.
The Leo Krasick car and single cam engine at the AARA two day event at Washington Court House, Ohio in mid May 2012.

Notice the uniforms...Hmmm. Well there ya go, YES! that's the site... Indiana Univ. Purdue. Never thought to look there... THANKS! In 1948 there were 4 cars under the GranCor sponsorship, A Offy, a Mazzy and 2 Miller Fords. The shot of the #39 with the more 'race car' looking nose is, I think, a rebodied Miller-Ford and the one Andy G. wrecked was the other. |
