That car belongs to a Mr. Cunningham from Des Moines. I took this at an IMCA Oldtimers' meet awhile back.

Thanks everyone for a great thread and great sprint car pics. I joined the HAMB after the great midget thread and Pikes Peak thread and this is even better.

For anyone near Iowa or passing thru on I-80, it is well worth a stop in Knoxville Ia. for the Sprint Car Hall of Fame or even better, one of the vintage events on the half mile dirt. Not a bad idea to stay for the current sprints on Sat. night.

I was blessed to start going to Knoxville in the early 70's so the winged jobs just don't hold a candle to the wingless jobs throwing dirt like nowhere else.

Yes, great shots of Gene Cunningham Ranger engined sprint car. I was fortunate to be at some vintage events in Iowa and Il. in the 80's and 90's where Gene was running that car.

There is an old agricultural engine club that has a display on Heritage Hill at the Iowa State Fair every year and along with the old hit/miss engines, one guy has a Ranger on an engine stand laid over just like Gene's sprint car.

Dad lettered his car today. I went out to show him how to lay Gold leaf... He has been wanting to learn for a while. Bout' time I taught him something!! Thats rare...
The Blue in these pics didn't photo too well.. Its one shot "Brilliant blue" In real life it way darker and richer.. Its an exact match to old 30's and 40's Porcelan signs if that helps..














Well... Were painters, so we couldn't have any "Decals" on the car.. All the cars we do at Zakira's get this treatment.. time consuming, but very cool.

The pre WoO/wings Knoxville Nats. were pretty special indeed, "a gathering of the clan" so to speak. And speaking of Knoxville; heres Bob Trostles first sprint/super.

Interesting that you mention Bob Trostle. I of course being a Knoxville attendee and former Iowegian knew of his fame and fortune.
I was at the Goodguys meet in Des Moines several yrs. ago selling some of my old sprint and midget stuff including a midget with a Wisconsin V4 air-cooled engine as well as a 70's era Edmunds sprint. Sadly, I was keeping a promise to my family that when our two daughters were ready for college, I would sell some of my accumulated cool stuff to be sure our girls went to college. Little did I know (and I'm a reasonably smart guy) how big the traditional rod scene would become and how valuable some of my stuff was.....Halibrand 16 wheels, Halibrand Champ rear end, hemi with Vertex and log manifold, etc. etc.

Anyway, a prospective buyer was standing at the back of my midget, reminiscing about all sorts of dirt track stuff when this guy walked up behind us and I thought it looked like Bob Trostle. He listend for a while and then began to offer the "true " version of events that the other man had been talking about involving Doug Wolfgang and other dirt guys.

I did not know it but at the time Bob was not only restoring some old sprint cars but was building some really cool street rods with a sprint theme.

He promptly made me an offer I couldn't refuse for my champ rear end and we have become acquantinces ever since. I saw him over the next few yrs. at swap meets in Des Moines and Greenfield Ia.

damn I forgot how ugly that thing was, hamber macmiller made that hood, the second version with the round cowling looked MUCH better
