Here's some Ascot Park pics for today

the 07 was Tom Lynch in the Lynch Mob sprinter, good chance he spun after I took the shot
I think the 10 is Tom Roa in his family's sprint car
and for the 11 I'm going with Bob Meli in his own car.

Thanks for posting these memories. Got any of the #82 car from 1978? I only have a couple of pics of my rookie ride and would like to see more. Thanks again.

My personal favorite was Sandy Reed coming over the PA with "close the back gate", seemed like he was saying that all the time.

What kind of chassis is the Lynch Mob car. It looks a lot like my Stapp 4-bar car. John S.

THANKS GUYS!!!

BTW -- the former Brenn owned Trevis built midget that Dick Briggs has is restored to the point of even having correct period hose clamps. It's one BEAUTIFUL machine.

There are some great classic shots taken at Ascot, but one of my favorite pictures ( and also one of my favorite people and drivers) has got to be this one taken at Ascot by Bill Taylor. Bill is the starter on the short course at Bonneville and quite a photographer. This was published in Open Wheel many years ago and Bill gave me the 6X10 that i am posting here. Most people when running a sprint at full tilt hang on with both hands, but not John! Give 'er full lock, stand on the gas, and shade you eyes was his motto.

Great site and a great thread.Took me three weeks to get to this point, but worth every second.

I am fascinated by the 4 cam Ford motors.Does anyone have any idea how many were made, and what years they were made.
Did Ford sell these to just anybody,or were they used for Ford projects.
What is one worth today?

It's difficult to say what these engines are worth today but in '63 you could buy a complete donk for around $23.000. The equivalent today is around $150.000.

I have one of those. Here is Dean Thompson doing the same thing and Deno had a birth anomoly where he had one arm shorter then the other. My memory is vague but I think it was is left arm that was shorter so in this shot he is driving with the short arm.

Pretty sure this is Bubby but it could be Buster Venard.

One point of note on the driving with one hand. Power steering had become more prolific in sprint cars at this time and it was quite a bit easier to do it at that point. I know my first year and a half in sprint cars I had manual steering and it was quite a bit more effort with those although front tires were also starting to get wider so that was changing the dynamic as well.

Deno used a "prosthetic" steering wheel. It had a raised portion, maybe 3 or four inches where the hand of his shorter arm grasped it. A very determined competitor.
