Another beautiful sunny day in Ventura but I hear it's snowing in other parts of the country so let's see some pictures of interesting vehicles for snow use.

holy hell Tommy. that is the craziest one i've seen yet...
we got damn near a foot here over night. i just had to shovel my way to my truck. when i was a kid (like 13-15) i had day dreamed (and drew up plans) to trun my 66 VW Beetle into a "snow cat". basicly just use the drivetrain to build osme sort of tank track type machine for traversing the snowy fields around my parents place. LOL the things i thought i could build out of that car. |

Some of us don't enjoy playing in the snow, we would rather get rid of it.

This is a snowplane my grandfather built with his brother. It had a model T engine and an airplane prop. It was often used to transport the doctor to remote farms when the roads were snowed in. There is a similar one in the museum in West Yellowstone Montana that I got to show to my son.

Man, y'all are making me homesick.
There is nothing like riding snowmobiles all night with some friends, stopping in the middle of the woods to build a bondfire and drinking till you can barely make it home. And, I haven't had a white Christmas in 6 years.

This is the bane of my existence right now ... I got it last week and with A LOT of love, it could be my new parts chaser/hauler in the summer ... right now it is all I can do to keep it running and/or stop. I'm slowly replacing every brake part on the damn thing and I can assure you it is no fun doing that when it's 10 below. Brrrrr ....

GAZ,the company that built the Russian Screw drive ( not a drive though Moscow after dark either...) ,was in actual fact the factory which was Founded to build Fords ,both cars, trucks and tractors under licence in the early 1930's so you are right! Spazebo!

My snow-day fun machines... The worse it gets, the more I am out in it. While people complain about how miserable the weather is, I get to have all the fun. Yesterday I was on the Interstate throwing a rooster tail and a TV crew sets up on the shoulder-snowbank where I throw the snow, hoping to get a good action shot. I slowed way down when I got near the camera man so I wouldn't cripple the guy with a few hundred pounds of flying slush to knock him off his feet. I was able to keep from bowling him over with the shooting slush only because I saw him in time to slow way down. We have to go very slow near parking lots on State Routes to keep from breaking windshields. I hate to think what would have happened to that camera man standing right by my discharge if I didn't see him in time..... The old VW commercial that asked what snow plow drivers use to get to work- remember that one? Here is my work-fun vehicle and my go-to-work vehicle (not a VW) Lots of snow in the trunk gives me traction and keeps the Mountain Dew cold.

The Linn was a heavy hauler from the 20s. They were a very low-geared factory half-track. I believe a lot of them were employed in the woods as log trucks.

I would be curious to know who's Tudor this is?
![]() I remember when it was for sale in Idaho and there was a really interesting story about how a rural town of Secesh had got it from another mail post... Secesh is about 40 miles from the nearest town and has a popluation of 8 in the winter time... they do live out there year round though... Pretty amazing group of off the grid survivors... This tudor was awesome in person, It looks like it is a newer photo of it here, because I remember about 5 years ago the roof was pretty wasted... Very cool car... Man I wish I had it here, I could use a plow after the recent storm. |

well, I took the time to do a little searching on that stuck sno-cat from the trans antarctic expedition and not only found out that it was recovered, but found a documentary on youtube that shows the video of it 8:20 seconds into the documentary

I will toss in one my Grandfather built somtime in theTwenties with if IRC WWI surplus parts. Anybody have an idea what that engine is out of? I think he said surplus replacement for an army bike of some kind. The story was the local beat cop would stop trafic on the cross street so he could run it down the alleys behind his Sheboygan WI house. Try that now...

COOL thread!
![]() ![]() Here's my contribution. I have been trying to figure out what the hell this thing is for awhile. If anyone can tell me what it is, I would owe you beer. You have to be right though. You can't tell me it's a Henway 5000 snow cruiser and expect to get beer! ![]() This does appear to have been designed for use on the snow. NOT an afterthought. I think it was skid-steer setup as well. OH... the little platform around it was DEFINITELY and afterthought and was not well constructed. I'm guessing it wasn't supposed to have anything around it and maybe just a truck bed or stake bed out back. ![]() ![]()

It's definitely a skid steer design. I love the center Cyclops light and whitewall bogey tires, that thing rocks!

Apparently this thing has been sitting in that location for years and I remember the first time I came around the bend and saw it sitting there. I just about went head-on into oncoming traffic! LOL! I immediately pulled over and went up to it. The chick I was dating at the time just didn't get what the hell I was doing. I got the "just some old snow car" speach. Needless to say that relationship didn't last long! BWAAAHAH!!! YES! That thing ROCKS!

I am surprised no one has thrown in a picture of Dr Fates snow car from the 60's movie The Great Race, I think it is still at the Petersen museum

The Snow Cruiser was an incredible vehicle, well worth reading up about. It even had its own Beech Stagger Wing Bi-plane that it piggy backed around.
Check it out here: http://www.joeld.net/snowcruiser/snowcruiser.html Doc.

I hear it's gone, or not "there" anymore,
I took that pic near my brothers house in south Washington state, I should have bought it when it was "available", but I didn't really want to take it apart so I could build a hotrod, I felt it should be left as it was. Dan

Back in the late forty my dad and uncle built a snow plane from a wreck plane it had a push prop. Would ride to town sitting on mom lap. There would be seven or eight parked at the end of main street.
You heard some good stories about settle snow at fence lines when the front skies would hook the fences really bad if it was woven wire.Have been trying to get pictures but no one can find any yet. Dad would get lists from the other local farmer for things they needed from the stores in town. Did this in to the fifty because the heavy snow in the Dakotas at those years. |

Whats the story behind the burning one??
Paperdog, best send me everything under that hood. It will love the wide open sunny streets of Australia to play in. Its 32* (90) today, if it gets under 20* (68) its DAMN cold!

That is what I think, fuck winter. This one seems to be dragging out but we have not had a harsh one in a while so that may be why it seems to be taking forever.

Three comments. First, check out the stud bolts on the tires of the crashed car. Second, I'm shocked that none of these cars skidded into the crowd and killed 50 people. Lastly, it's gotta be cold driving that fast in an open car in the snow.

I have driven a car with bolts in the tires on frozen snow covered fields. I will tell you this much....there is no traction like bolts in tires on frozen ground. Holy shit it ripped and hauled ass. "It" was an Audi Quattro 5000. I5 5 speed. My buddy put it together and we beat it like the red headed step child. It took everything we threw at it. We had so much fun in that car that day. I wish I had the video we shot of it. He drove and I taped. It was great fun.

TJM-
Yup. Diesel-driven hydraulic drive, articulated bed, 8 wheel drive. The drive system is a trip. You can see how the tires are located by large trailing arms- but there are no springs, just hydraulic shocks. The tires aren't directly driven, they 'float' on the drivers which are the small round rollers on top of the tire. The drive rollers spin backwards, spinning the tire forwards. The tires run at atmospheric pressure, so their deflection on the hydraulic drive rollers is the spring. I forget what the payload capacity on these are but they can easily haul a 966 loader. With the hydraulic drive to all 8 wheels and the articulated bed and the 3 feet or so of deflection in the trailing arm and the foot or more deflection in the tires it sort of feels like riding on a boat.

Your engine is a Henderson motorcycle engine, V-Twin. It was originally a Thor engine but was changed shortly after it was built due to the original engine being run too lean after the carb iced up.

If this is your first time in this thread, go back a few pages and read up on the "snow cruiser" it's one of the coolest and wackiest things I'd never heard of.
Here's another one (along with the ebay link it came from) |

Funny how this old thread popped back up with the first real snow storm of the season.
We might even see some in the mountains in North Georgia tonight.

Mine too! Partial to any old U.S. Mail truck or vehicle, drove a 29 AA Mail truck in a parade early in my career as a Postal MVO. Neat memory for me.

I was buildong a bridge in Dover ,NH. This old buck used to walk down to the site and watch. He had to be 85 or 90. One day he showed up a pic of a 1909 Harley with chains on the tires and an out rigger with a ski on it for the winter.
That old guy knew how it was. EDIT.. It was kinda like this..
