Amen. He was a difficult person to work with at times, but his stories were great. Definitely an innovator and one not tied to sponsor demands. RIP Al.

I like this shot of him checking out the SWC Mustang...

We sure wish we could find it. The Vander Woude family has been hunting for it for several years.

It was one of three bodies made by Mr. Norm (or at least sold by Mr. Norm) based on the Charger III show car (one of the bodies was found earlier this year and there's a thread here on the HAMB about it). It was rebodied with a Maverick body in late '70, then the body was placed for sale in ND. We traced it all over KC and then we lost the trail in a small town outside of KC where it was back in the early-mid '80s. We've heard rumors that it's been hanging in shops from the Ozarks to St. Louis to Texas to......

If anyone has a credible lead please let us know!

The last of the original Al Vander Woude-driven Flying Dutchman funny cars. That's Don Vander Woude showing off his dad's car to his girlfriend.

The shot of Warren Gunter's Durachrome Bug was obvioulsly taken at the time he ventured back east for his summer tour. Fraught with crashes and fires, he prevailed, and eventually found himself in the big season finale at New England Draway's New England Funny Car Championships. A 16 car affair, the event hosted the best that the Eastern seaborad had to offer, along with a bevy of touring cars like Jungle Jim. In the end, the little ill handling Bug made to the finals where it got R/U to JJ.

Jr Brogdon's Phony Pony also appears to be on the barn storming circuit somewhere back east: So-Cal tracks dont normally have lush green grass lining the track. The rendition of Phony Pony car seen here was its most successful incarnation; powered by a blown fuel 289. Brogdon tried three versions: single inj 289, twin injected 289 and the verson depicted here.
