[quote=Cut55;3243937]"Catching the 9.92 express, Dick Bourgeois in Big John's candy charger dropped Doug Cook at the gate to wait for the next train in the S-W-C black car." Fontana, late '65.
Funny story about Dick Bourgeois. When Don Nicholson went touring, and wasn't around to tune my roadster, I took it over to the shop that Earl Wade opened with Dick. Earl was Don's right hand man on the dyno at Service Chevrolet, so it was a logical place to take the roadster. The following Saturday at San Gabe Earl wanted to make a pass in the car. The quickest run to date was an 11.14 at carlsbad, and our national record was 11.18. Earl played with tire pressure, and really did a John Force burn out. He staged, and banged off an 11.06. Just as Earl got back to the pits, Dick showed up, and heard us going on about Earl's quick pass. Dick said "shit, Wade can't drive, where's your helmet?" Dick made 3 passes, 11.15 was the best. Then, without getting out of the car, he rolled back up to the line. As the starter was staging the car, Dick took off. Rolled through the lights from about a foot back. 10.86. When Dick came back to the pits he said, "screw you Wade, I got the quickest time slip", and walked off. Still got the time slip in my scrap book!
