And what a huge head start that Bug must have been given. At least 2 seconds and some change. This was OMS in 1971. The next year Badberg debuted his 29 Roadster that was high tech for the time, and beautiful.

I followed NHRA alright, but I find this pre-Pro Stock AHRA and NASCAR class racing quite interesting.

I think the AHRA didnt get the credit they deserved. Jim Tice was always experimenting with the creation of various heads up classes as a way to satisfy the racer and fan. The Ultra Stocks serve as but one example, but Tice also created an injected gas funny car class that was popular on both coasts. The AHRA also had a jr fuel title at stake. I think Cox and Daniel served as the point series champ for that category in 1969. And of course their GT classes have already been discussed.

IHRA ran a Pro/Stock named class like NHRA, but I don't know anything about weight or other differences, or when they started.
How many years did Ultra/Stock run? Did AHRA ever change it to Pro/Stock??

Other than run whatchama-callit match racing, this was some of the best racing ever of actual cars with real automobile bodies, including what ran on high bank ovals. Tom S.

even if this were not an old discussion, the black and white on-track shot is the real one.

I think Ultra Stock ran 67-69, then Pro Stock as we know it debuted at 1970 AHRA Winternationals. I am thinking, and thinking has found me wrong on plenty of occassions, that AHRA called pro stock "GT-1" for a year or two. Dyno Don won at AHRA Winternationals in 1970 if memory serves me correct.

Indeed, a very version of either the first Pure Heaven, which later crashed, or its replacement, sans chrome and pearl paint. In 1968, Fitzgerald went for weeks undefeated in the local circuit. He was a very good engine builder offering his services out of Anaheim. He built a blown BBC for funny car racer Lee Jones before Jones ventured East to hook up with Malcom Durham.
