Yep I think thats them been a few years but I think it was the train (twin Chwvys) vs Safford Gatie & Ratican (blown olds). If anybody knows different I cant argue the point. My fuzzy memory inside a "dented helmet" says that Safford was on a 12 win terror at San Gabe at that time. Anybody confirm or deny that little factoid

God, I loved San Gabe. Irwindale was good, but San Gabe was just so low key, it was pure grass roots drag racing.

But, question, Safford, Gaide, and Ratican normally ran Hilborns, this shot shows an Endrele, and a crude airfoil on the car, wonder if this is around the end for this car, which was replaced by the Fuller "Shark Car"?

San Gabriel was my first drag strip. Dad took me there starting in the late 1950's.
In the early 1960's I rode my bike to San Gabe with my camera bag in my bike bag on my back. Great days at that strip and no doubt I was there when these photos were taken. This was a couple of years before Irwindale opened. I preferred San Gabe and Fontana. They both were "bare bones", old splintery wood bleachers, dirt, dust and more dirt. These were drag strips, not casinos. Bare-bones...just fun, no more was needed. Oddly enough I took a photo just three hours ago of the old San Gabe site. I always carry a camera, so, for some reason I snapped this, just hours ago. I always keep the camera focused on "infinity" when I'm driving, so I just point in the general direction and hit the shutter. Right where all the electrical equipment is was the spot of many great days of drag racing.....

Gas Ronda 63 Ford 427-425hp Liteweight !!! Fiberglass hood & front fenders probably still topped 4000lbs. I think this is the pass when the driveshaft (complete with the pinion & pinion support) hit the ground and went about 50 ft up when the car passed over it.

it was probably Ivo Vs. the "Untouchable" jet car owned by Romeo Palamides.
That was the day Ivo came to the starting line with weiners and marshallows on sticks attached to his rollbar on the "Branstormer". I was there and will never forget it. ![]()
