64% I FAILED. I guess I should open the Physics books from High school. I ran through thinking I was doing OK. Oh well. These damn computers have been sucking any bit of intelligence that I used to have. I feel like I am slowly getting dumber now that I have been out of school for more then a year. I swear I have to find some time to start reading more.

Surprised myself, got a 90 the only time. I had to wing it on the schematics. I know basicly nothing about them. Afraid to try it again, might get dumber! lol

94.....the ones I had trouble with were the triple pulley, and the planetary gears. On the planet gears, I could not understand what the two most likely answers actually meant, because they said the same thing.

It did seem to get excited when I answered the triangles-on-a-teeter-totter question correctly.

Ouch. 72%.
It's been a long time since I worked with electrical schematics/wiring diagrams. Guess I better brush up before I rewire my car.
The gear stuff was fun though.

You can see which ones you got wrong or right by going to the Show/Hide TOC button that is on the opposite side of the page to the submit button on question pages. It will pull up the table of contents. I am guessing you don't get a green check if its wrong.

84 for me. I'll admit, I'm not too sure where I got em wrong. I know I gave an "educated" guess on the planetary gears though. Honestly, it probably wasn't too educated, but I didn't just guess either.

I got a 92% but failed to find an itemization of which questions I missed.
Was there one?

I may have screwed up on the ones that use terms that aren't used in physics, like "deceleration," there just ain't no such thing.
A physicist would call it an acceleration in the opposite direction just as a turn is an acceleration in a lateral direction to the current acceleration...
And friction isn't what makes brakes work. An exchange of energy in the form of heat is what makes brakes work - to a physicist.
But some of terms like these are used in mechanical sciences...

So which answer is correct on the fan?
It's going to turn the direction it turns when ON itself because of the angle of it's own blades, but that doesn't have anything to do with which direction they are referring to as same or opposite in the question setup.?
A case of a dumb question failing the testee.

94% Reminded me of the mechanical section of the ASVAB I took to join the Air Force...but I got a 99% on that one.

I think the pulleys may have tricked a little but I did not know about the button on the left and I don't feel like taking the test again.

It so happened that I enjoyed the pulleys and almost switched from Mechanical to electrical engineering during school!

Again take a look at the button to the left of the submit button. It pulls up the table of contents and shows a green check for the correct ones. I did not head back for a wrong one.

Fully enjoyed the test though. Passed it along to others here at work.

90%, screwed up the planetary gear question, they always confuse me. I then argued semantics with a couple of the physics questions. For being a mechanical engineer I was surprised I nailed all the electrical questions. Not ready to switch to being a sparky.

Hell, I thought "I was cutting a fat hog in the ass" I was up to question 32 before I got a message saying that a answer was incorrect. I didn't get another message, so I was feeling kind of smug until I saw the score 78%. Time to grab a big ole bite of humble pie.

I got a 92. I wasn't sure on that one with about five pulleys stacked up.

A couple questions had artwork that was a little confusing. Like the rack and pinion one didn't specify if the pinion was fixed or if the rack was fixed. Or the one with a "Piston" that looked like the head of a nail. Was the drawing representing fluid being pushed by a piston of that surface area to a smaller piston, or was that supposed to be a big nail-head shaped piston?

I got a 66, the fan question is misleading. Same direction can mean 2 things, the same way literally, same way of the fan motor. Facing each other technically one would be counterclockwise and one would be clockwise.

I also wasn't aware atmospheric pressure brought air into the cylinders, I always thought "suction" did it. Obviously not.

They need a lesson on calculating percentages as well. I missed 16 out of 50. So I got 34 out of 50. 35/50 = .68*100=68%

They gave me a 66.

I say the question regarding the atmospheric pressure has technically two correct answers. Yes the pressure brings in air. Only because the piston pulling down creates the low pressure in the cylinder so the higher pressure outside wants to push its way into the cylinder. But yes the piston creates a sort of vacuum inside the cylinder. Thats my way of describing it.

I took it as a piston, pushing onto a rod, or a "nail shaped piston". surface area was like 3 times more on top, so you multiply the pressure by 3, as you cut surface area down that much.

It's like saying the fact the combustion chamber is actually pressured on the combustion stroke has not help on pushing it on the following exhaust stroke. I believe it does Plus, the piston rings aren't letting air past them, or else there would be no compression, not constant anyways. Therefore it's PUSHING it out...same can be said for it sucking air in. Least that's how I see it.

Once again while taking the test if you click the button to the far left of the submit button as you go through the test you can see correct and incorrect answers.

As far as your percentage is concerned GrantH we do not know how each question is weighted. Some questions are much harder than others and may be considered 2 points instead of 1 or something like that. Go for the 50/50 and then it doesn't matter. ;-)

But,,, because the pressure is higher outside it is pushing the air in.
However I do agree with you, but I did learn it as things don't get sucked in, they get pushed in.

Didn't see the results page(!) so I'm not sure what I messed up on, but it might have been the pendulum questions...which is odd because nobody else seemed to mess those up!

Very cool test ... Yeah...but in the "real world" things don't always work like in a text book example anyway so you need to think things out for yourself.

oh yeah nad the thing about the pulling air into the cylinder question the only reason a vacuum is created is because there is lower atmospheric pressure on one side of the object. the introduction of a higher pressure to a lower pressure area creates a vacuum. if the cylinder was equal to atmospheric pressure air would go nowhere due to the volume of the cyliner and the size of the valve(which totally sounds assanine but apparently thats how physics works). I could never really figure it out but whatever. air isnt really pulled into the cylinders its "pushed" by otmospheric pressure, thats why a blower works so well it increases atmospheic pressure outside the cylinders causing more air to be forced in more quickly. errrr sumthin

I had a 52 & I knew I'd be the biggest knucklehead before I even did the test. I guess that's what draws me to this whole thing & gives me the drive to build my project, which is essentially building a car from scratch. I did build my own house with hand tools, but I'm glad I subbed the electric & plumbing ha-ha). The house is still standing after 20 years. So, when a guys asks an obvious question on this site, it's probably me. Don't laugh too hard.

I think I blew it on the pulley ones and a couple electrical... it seems I couldn't remember which was "series" and which was "parallel" thus I missed out on the voltages...! But I got the "series-parallel" correct...!

Re-took the test without copying Mikes and got a 90%

86% for me, some of them were worded tricky, like the fans, there was no answer saying the other fan would blow in reverse, just the same way or opposite? That multi pulley was a mind blower, I thought you gained leverage by 2's for each change, anyway, it was fun and just took a second.

Bwahahaha! 100%

But like most of the other aces, I'm an engineer, so it doesn't really count I guess.

In actuality, we engineers ought to have been flogged if we didn't ace it.

Good thing there wasn't a section on spelling in there . . . . . .

I goy 92% but found some answers were ambiguous. The Planetary gears for example, I knew exactly what would happen, but trying to dedide which description THEY thought described what would happen was the hard part. The fan question is too ambiguous, again I knew what would happen but couldn't work out what the answers actually meant.
The one I did get genuinely wrong was the water flowing through the tapered tube. Oh well maybe I understand it better now. Personally the pulleys and gears were easy for my, I've always understood them.
When I left school I sat many tests that were similar as part of recruitment for various companies.
Mart.

Okay, an 84 here but I swear question 25 is wrong...they say it's a series-parallel circuit...I say it's just a parallel circuit. What's the difference between the circuit in question 24 and 25 other than where the load wires are connected (just slide 'em up in 24 to where they're connected in 25 - same electrical point). A series-parallel circuit would have a series load and a parallel load. And yes, there were ambiguous questions..

80% and I design houses for a livin'. Fun way to burn some time. By the way, your iced tea comes up the straw when there's a vacuum create by "SUCKING"! If it's atmospheric pressure that pushes the tea up to my pie hole, I don't want to hear that, you engineers.

I still don't understand the worm gear question (#11). It looks like the flutes on the worm gear are going to move to the right with the rotation shown by the arrow, and the other gear should follow that by rotating clockwise. Where am I going wrong?

Thanks,
Kurt

The teeth on the worm gear are like normal right hand threads on a bolt or screw. Think about it like a bolt going through a nut. If you hold the HEAD of the bolt while you turn it counterclockwise with a wrench, and you keep the nut from turning, the nut will push away from the bolt head as you turn the screw. The top of the big gear will push away from the end with the red arrow and rotate the big gear counterclockwise.

Think of the worm gear as a bolt. Look to see if it is right or left handed then see whitch way its being rotated. Is it going to be going into the nut or out. The surface of the other gear is the nut, whitch way does it travel?

I got a 96%, but I cheated. I was in electronics for 20 years in the Marines. The other stuff I learned wrenching on cars. I'm pretty sure I screwed up the block and tackle, I just don't remember the formula!! But hey "Thats why chain hoists and cherry pickers were invented".

94%

I missed the worm gear cause i read the threads backward.

the serpentine one because i screwed up which way the original one was spinning

and the cylinder vacuum one, which as discussed is arguably only part wrong.
