She's got two habits like I do, only hers are socks and panties. Maybe she'll be in Garage one day showing both

I'd have to admit a quote from the late Johnny Carson's Late night show is very appropriate here - as Ed would say: "You are correct Sir"

I stopped and bought the last issue for something to read while I went out to eat one night. I wanted to see what all the hype was about. I'm thumbing throught the pages and come across a photo of a car being built in a shop, 2 dudes are posing near the car, and there's a fucking Nazi flag hanging from the shop ceiling.
Of all the pics they shot and could've used, they had to show that shit. I have relatives who died fighting for this country, I was injured serving in Iraq, and I knew quite a few people who died on 9-11. People that my brother worked with at Dean Witter; 2 of whom I've known since they started school together with my brother in kindergarten. They were like family.
I don't know if it's some kind of macho underground statement being made, but I for one will not be looking at this rag again. Jesse can shove it up his ass.
That's my opinion, and my opinion only.

.......and there's a fucking Nazi flag hanging from the shop ceiling. You should educate yourself 1st before making comments. Really look into the history of symbols. Even in the early twentieth century, the swastika was still a symbol with positive connotations. For instance, the swastika was a common decoration that often adorned cigarette cases, postcards, coins, and buildings. During World War I, the swastika could even be found on the shoulder patches of the American 45th Division and on the Finnish air force until after World War II.

not that I really care, but if it was a Nazi flag on the wall.. that has certain connections to it that are very controversial.. regardless of what the swastika was before the nazi's... if it's a nazi flag, it's a nazi flag.. he didn't even say it had a swastika...

That aside.. the last issue was my first issue I bought... I read it cover to cover.. something I rarely do... great work stoner and crew... looking forward to this one.

One of the best things about it is it isn't another hot rod or car craft where you get "how to tune your holley" or "manifold comparison test" about 40 freaking times. It actually has stories and history in it!!

KNUX!
I wouldn't bet anyone hanging up a swastika in 2007 is thinking about it's prewar meanings. I have a nice prewar copy of "The Jungle Book" bound in red leather with swastikas on it. The spine has nothing but a swastika on so someone who doesn't pick it up, see what it is, and check the printing date could get the wrong idea. Too bad for them.

That said, it's pretty dumb to stop buying a mag because someone doing layout either wasn't PC enough or just didn't think about it.

It's one of the few "hot rod" mags out there that's worth reading and doesn't come off as if it were written by a bunch of grade schoolers. Worth buying just for that, and I'm big enough to ignore the bits of it that I think are stupid or offensive, nothing's perfect (what have you ever been 100% happy about other than your first peice of pussy?). Lighten up there guy and Stoner keep doing what you're doing.

PS: I'll second the carnitas and Bohemia!

Anxiously awaiting as usual.

Denny Millani drove my dad's fuel car at one time. Pops was still in college and hadn't gotten his license yet. He was driving for Gotelli at the same time. Glad to see you write something on him. He's sorely missed after his fatal accident. Legs under cars looked bitchin, but dangerous as all hell.

Hey, Gooz--wait till you see this issue--and thanks again, dood!! We had a blast and the only downside was that we had to come home on Virgin America instead of Air Gooz...

Hey, I'm gonna chime in here on this thing, because it brings up an important point:

One of the biggest reasons GARAGE exists is because I always thought that the magazines in our category were suffering from 'sameness.' I had a hunch that folks would be interested in what I knew was a much more interesting story BEHIND the car than just the car itself. Good, bad or ugly – GARAGE was going to report on exactly what was going on in, behind, away from or in spite of the actual garage. Throw some hotties in there for good measure and we had a magazine brewing.

Now, here's the thing: because I have so much respect for what YOU are doing out there, I'll never censor you. If you're building something amazing, I'm not gonna tell you to take down your naked lady posters when we come to photograph you. They're up on the wall for a reason. If you cuss or say some controversial shit while we're sitting on either side of a tape recorder, I'm not gonna forget to include that in the copy. And if you have a swastika flag or the Stars And Bars or Leather Nation or a Sickle-and-Hammer or rainbow stripes hanging from your shop ceiling, we're not gonna shy away from that.

I know you're not asking for advice, Grinderspark, but lemme drop some: when you see somebody doing something different, question it. But give that person a chance to answer your question before you pass judgement.

Same goes for GARAGE: question what you see in the magazine, but don't just throw it away--I personally guarantee you will be enlightened (even if just a little) with each issue. Better yet, do me the favor of giving me a call at the office if an image or a story in the magazine moves you in any which way--like I said: good, bad or ugly...

As always, if you're having problems with your subscription, drop me a line directly at:

chief@garagemagazine.com

We'll get you taken care of. BUT--don't waste your time blasting us here on the HAMB! We can't do anything to help until you get in touch with us directly. And I'm not on this board often enough to get anything taken care of via the HAMB in a timely manner.

I dig the "no censorship" rule, Stoner.

Not to drudge up the issue again, cuz it seems like it's squashed...But I went back and looked for the article in question. I noticed the flag. It made me a little uncomfortable. I'm not a fan of the connotations it carries today. Then I looked a little more closely at the rest of his shop in the other photos. He has a Skinny Puppy poster! That immediately canceled out the negativity of the Nazi flag. Balance has been achieved.

Yep...I noticed the Nazi flag right away also... Didn't like it, but it's not my shop, and not my magazine. I also took it in context...I'm not gonna' stop buying the magazine because of it. But, the cool thing about sites like HAMB, is that we CAN voice our opinions.

There's always going to be something about a publication that SOMEONE doesn't like... There are even people out there that don't like having hotties on the cover... That's the cool thing about America...don't like it?... complain to the Editor, then go buy something else...

OhGAWD, you wouldn't believe what I've left on the table over the years because of the "girls" thing. But hey, my approach comes, in part, from being allowed to watch "Hee Haw" and "Dukes Of Hazzard" as a kid--I wasn't allowed to watch "CHiPs" or "Emergency!" or shows with guns and shit at all. Mom was a closet hippie. So, it was all cars and boobs for me...

Speaking of cars from this issue--when was the last time you saw Cole's '36 actually MOVING?

just to help further clarify the swastika nonsense, since it helped clarify a bit for me, even though I knew its been around for centuries. I didnt know this;

Quote:
The swastika (from Sanskrit svástika स्वास्तिक ) is an equilateral cross with its arms bent at right angles, in either right-facing (卐) or left-facing (卍) forms. The term is derived from Sanskrit svasti, meaning well-being. The Thai greeting sawasdee is from the same root and carries the same implication.
It is a widely-used symbol in Dharmic religions (Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism). Hindus often decorate the swastika with a dot in each quadrant. In India, it is common enough to be a part of several Devanagari fonts. It is also a symbol in the modern Unicode and is often imprinted on religious texts, marriage invitations, and decorations. It is used to mark religious flags in Jainism and Buddhist temples in Asia.
Archaeological evidence of swastika-shaped ornaments dates from the Neolithic period. In 1920, the swastika was appropriated as a Nazi symbol, and since then has become a controversial motif. In the Western world, it is this usage as a symbol of Nazism that is most familiar, and this political association has largely eclipsed its historical use in the East.
The symbol occurs in other Asian, European, African and Native American cultures – sometimes as a geometrical motif and sometimes as a religious symbol.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika

ANYWAYS..

I picked up your guys' Girls Issue #2 after that I instantly got a subscription, in my line of work (railroader) I need lots of good reading, and when a Magazine offers, damn near cover to cover reading with little to no advertising inbetween articles, I'm impressed never mind the fact that it is Awesome reading as well. Keep doing what you guys do, it's awesome s**t.

Back when I was a little kid on the glacier, my mom caught me ogling some of Uncle Gronk's erotic cave paintings. She told me if I didn't stop, Big Earth Spirit Woman would strike me blind. I said, "okay, I'll just do it until I need witch-doctor eye potion."

That's when she washed out my mouth with mammoth tallow.

Pretty funny that squares still get offended by that?...I don't get it??...I'm still trying to figure out the Nazi/Iraq connection??
But I have been to Iraq Twice and my SS (special forces, calm down!) friend has an awesome colection of WWII Nazi machine guns that he has "found" in various houses owned by Saddam and Uday.....He even carries a bitchin Lugar as his sidearm.....So? maybe thats the connection?? But wait?? that dude is a badass that is fighting for us?...So we should hate him??....I'm confused now??.....ooooh crap...

KNUX!
To me, the key word in your reply...."was." It WAS a symbol with positive connotations. Sorry my friend, but after the symbol was connected with killing MILLIONS you can't go back and undo that connection for nostalgia purposes because you think it's cool. That's no way to show respect.

Fine, call me "square" and tell me I don't get it. Just my 2c and how I feel. I still think the magazine is cool.

I guess I hadn't noticed the flag thing, I already knew about it's connotations through history besides how the nazi's stole it and I wasn't alive when my grandfather was fighting them. Regardless, GARAGE is the only magazine that isn't so goddamned predictable and that's why it's the only rag I subscribe to. Thanks Stoner

"Fine, call me "square" and tell me I don't get it". Sorry, wasn't posting to single any particular one or persons, BriggsBodied28. I am half German and I by far do not agree what has happened in the past in what Hitler was setting out to do. Lets keep the HAMB family a pleasant one!!!! My post was off of a site that tells of the history of symbols, not by me personally. KNUX!

Who cares anymore? Seems the only real people who still get offended by any Notsee reference these days are just plain ol' white folks. Shit, look at the colors of this message board (the graphic ones). I'm more offended by seeing semi-nude plumpers covered in tattoos or POS hot rods that should be resting in scrapyards instead of being hailed by ignants.

What's a semi-nude plumper?

That's weird, I say something about a magazine, and it gets closed within 7 posts. This one is 5 pages and still going. I love Garage mag, read it over and over. I could care less about any swastikas, iron crosses, SS symbols, etc. They are part of the biker culture, like it or not. In fact, a lot of the bikers that started using it were veterans of WW2. They did it to piss off the general public. Looks like it still works.

Surfers in the 60's did the same thing, probably to piss off their parents, Iron Crosses etc.. I saw a surf film from the 60's where a few surfers dressed up completely in Nazi Germany SS uniforms and rode on their backs on skateboards inside a drainage pipe that went from a road way above all the way down to the oultlet by the sand....good stuff

I fuckin' hate whiners... Let me tell you something. I asked Car Kulture DeLuxe if I could do a feature article on the old Ramchargers High and Mighty replica that the geezers at Chrysler were building. Since I work at the HQ and am a member of the employee car club I though I would be as good as in.

Well I talked to the man in charge of the car and he said he was interested and wanted to see acopy of the magazine. He took it to the "committee" where they all said no because of the tag line on the cover "This ain't your father's car magazine" or something like that. They went on to say that the magazine is a bit too hard-edged for them and that they were working on letting Hot Rod do a story on the car.

Needless to say, I was crushed... What a bunch of uptight ultraconservative (new word for square) pricks!

Yes... The Hot Rod got the spread like a year later...

Only slighty bitter

Uh...Jesse...that's a photo of an ACTUAL U-Boat...with ACTUAL Nazis...DURRING the war. The comparison you're trying to make is a little ridiculous, homie.

But I get your point. People shouldn't be so sensitive.

My brother-in-law collects Nazi relics. He gave me a flask with an SS insigna. It's dope. But I don't display it on my coffee table.

Question about GARAGE 15: Did the girl on the cover know who 7 Seconds is? I'm assuming it was for the drag strip theme, but you never know.

[quote=JESSEJAMES;2239690]DAN I am completly blown away! This is an outrage! You are on double probation! I can't believe you let the the readers see this "swaztika" logo in our magazine. This must not happen again!

anyhoo...
But wait?? that dude is a badass that is fighting for us?...So we should hate him??....I'm confused now??.....ooooh crap...

some pics!

Why not just enjoy the magazine for what it is? Instead of bashing it because of your own misconceptions. I,for one, like the magazine. If it bothers you...don't buy it...Enough with the "Jesse bashing"! Get over it...

There's a word that, 60 years ago, also had a different meaning. The Nazis didn't pervert this word, but, like the good ol' swastika, its meaning has been co-opted and changed forever.

But for those who want to pretend that time and events and groups of people can't irrevocably change anything, start using the word, 'gay' to describe your festive night out with the guys.

I have to agree with Bad Bob, the bashing gets real old, real fast.

To think that this post started with a guy, Stoner, excited about the next issue of his hard work coming out and it ends up like it did, is a shame.

So I guess all the Confederate flags in the other Rockasilly magazines are okay because???????

I'm sorry, I look at the cars, not the shop decor. Remember, one of the freedoms your grandfather and you fought for was the right for idiots to say whatever they want, including the ones you don't agree with!

Congrats Gooz

My stepfather was in the Navy for 30 years and acheived the rank of Master Chief. He knows more about military history and WWII than anyone I've ever met. He's a die hard Patriot and says the pledge of alliegiance every day and has more real Nazi shit than Germany. He collects it along with other historical memoribilia. Sweeping something under the carpet won't make it go away. Is it dangerous? Yes, Imagery and icons can be. But it is history none the less. I walk in that room and can't help but get consumed by history and how WWII impacted the world. This planet became a hell of a lot smaller in a few short years. And yes I'm a cracker-ass cracker.

hahaha-well, not all of us But I did grow-up surrounded by cracker-ass-crackers in Southeast Texas and that was just the way it was. I think people nitpick things to death vs. focusing on larger issue, building kick-ass cars. Not everyone is going to agree with each other's views and you can't force them on people.

I'm just pissed this thread got hijacked by somebody with an agenda other than promoting my friend's time to shine

A top shelf magazine for sure! I guess I'll pick-up a copy at the bookstore in the Home and Garden section. Thanks to all the folks at Garage HQs! I'd like to see an article on the Speed shops of Socal during the late 60's/70's (Super Shop; loved their radio commercial)

I LOVED that issue of garage (#5 i think) with that fine ass black girl right there on the cover. I think that was the first "girls" issue. I think it's great that Garage shows all aspects of the life. Lets not forget that Jesse was the first person to put an ad with a black man in Easyrider. I really appreciate it since I'm a proud Venice whiteboy...with a half black son. Oh, and thanks for coming to Venice to shoot the cover. Venice originals is a great shop.

I hear where the other person is coming from.

I understand there are MANY places that the swastika were prior to the Germans using it, but there is a difference between a swastika and a Third Reich flag IMO. The only place I see Third Reich flags these days is in the neo-Nazi crowd.

I personally noticed the flag too and was wondering why it was there.

My grandparents and great-grandparents fought for the Reich in WW2 and they did so to prevent being shot by the SS. The flag doesn't bode well with me either.

Garage magazine is media.
They are showing it like it is...just like the newspaper and t.v. news reports on neo Nazi activity and hate crimes and white supremest gangs. Doesnt mean they condone or like it. Just showing it like it is.
If a news channel covered a story on neo Nazis would anybody say they are never watching that channel again?

I have been following this thread for a while now and I think that "Garage" is one of the most racially diversified magazines out there in terms of car culture and for that fact I am glad.. That why I subscribe .
That and the fact that they have some of the most competent and clued in people writing these articles and oiling their girls.
You all can question the obvious and make any assumptions you want about that one shot of the flag and it's symbolism, but if you really looked hard enough I would of thought everybody here would have picked up on the fact the Mullins /Rabbers chain drive streamliner while being patterned after the WW2 DeHavilland Mosquito in its paint job and quest for bering the fastest also has the symbol of the ww2 SS Das Reich panzer division on its flanks ,but it's key in the shield is flipped...Maybe a poke in jest to the current record holder who campaigns a BMW powered one???/ Who knows?... but like all of the previous stuff it's all just conjecture and some people have nothing else better to do than piss and moan.

Great mag keep it up!

Doesn't Germ have something to do with that project? Lord knows he never does anything to piss off the status quo!

RF- I wasn't talking about 'your grandfather' in the collective sense, put 'your grandfather' as directed towards the offend party. My grandfather didn't fight in WW2 either, but right before he died and completely senile, he swore he was an Italian spy and even spoke some Italian, which none of us had ever heard him speak...

Finally, someone has deconstructed the underpinnings of Garage's success: the careful Old World craftsmanship that goes into every girl-oiling assignment.

I humbly doff my hat, Jerome; once again you have proved yourself the Baudelaire of South Milwaukee bohemian hot rod society.

I can draw you a rendition of it in crayon on the backsides of used fax paper for about $50.

Hey, 4 6--you Canadianians should be paying $6.95 for the magazine. We print $4.95/$6.95 right on the cover for that very reason. Lemme know who's charging you more...

And I'm gonna let y'all in on a little secret, but don't tell anyone: if I want a Premiere issue, I have to go pay $100+ on Egay for it, too--we sold out of that before I realized I should've kept a few for myself. Although, I think my wife stashed one or two away where I'd never find them...

Hey, one more thing: we'll be throwing our first "issue release party" in San Francisco this Thursday afternoon at The Irish Bank (10 Mark Lane, San Francisco, CA 94108).

It'll be a happy hour type of deal starting around 4pm and you'll get a copy of the latest issue before it hits the stands. Low key, but we'll have a few of the contributors to this issue there and you'll dig it. Lemme know if you have any questions...

Yup--we're actually in SOMA, but close enough. And the Irish Bank is right at the Chinatown Gate. It's a great location and I guarantee you'll blow minds in that part of town--those Financial District types have never seen anything like this before!

Last Thursday I went on a rant to my mailman, screaming, cursing, threatening violence because I had no magazine. Thinking he stole it. Friday no magazine so I started swinging punching him three or four times in the face as he's driving away, Saturday comes and I ready, I have my dog (he's ready to kill) I hear the mail truck up the street as I quickly hide behind my well placed van. I jump into action, dog snarling out into the street we go. The dog gets bought by a couple flying dog biscuits, he's done (fucking dog). As I leap towards the truck the mail man swerves driving into the neighbors yard (bushes and flowers flying) throwing my mail into the air speeding off down the road. My bloods boiling thinking of running down the street after the truck, I see in the corner of my eye BECKY O'DONOHUE OH my GOD there she is laying in the street right in front of me.............

Another great issue Stoner

After seaching all the local magazine racks I finally found this magazine. The only thing I wanted to read was the Suicidal interview. I know that it was never mentioned that there was an interview on the cover but you could have atleast said something new about the band. I was kinda bummed to say the least. Good mag other wise.

I just got it at Burns and No Balls, very good job, I must say the gals are a bit on the scrawny side in this issue, if you can get some of the big uns from over there at Laid that would be rad.

Keep up the good work fellas.

I got to go to the issue release party in SF, gotta say it was pretty cool.

Very understated and just some hanging out. Dan and his crew were very cool to everyone and I just wanted to say thanks and congratulations on a great magazine.

I also wanted to give a shout out to Victor and Carlos of Sinners-inc.

Peace,
Oggie

Just bringing this past thread up instead of a new one. Stoner, any teezer photos of the new issue that will be hitting the 'stands soon? Always looking forward to having the latest issue in my hands. KNUX!
