This is actually a serious question...I grew up in NE Ohio, and when my friends and I would venture forth to the wilds of Ravenna, Atwater, Mantua, Rootstown, etc we would invariably hear some hayseed say his car "ran like a raped ape." I heard this expression many times when I lived in those parts and now wonder how it got started. Did Junior see something at the Zoo that he shouldn't have? Anyone else heard this before, or have any idea how it got started?
Don't know how it got started, but the wife and I had a great long ass drive through all the above mentioned towns tonight (rt 44, 43, 619, and 62) and I must say my Buick was running like a raped ape!
When they made King Kong back in the 30's one of the bi-planes ran in to King Kong from behind, hence the term. They unfortunatly deleted the scene from the final cut but---

First off. If an ape was raped (by what? ) , I want to be nowhere near. Down south it was "Runs like a scalded dog" makes more sense and less disturbing visual! Dave
Funny, I've used that phrase since I was a little kid in So-Cal. I was just telling a friend in England how my BSA goes like a raped ape, can't remember where I picked it up though, probably from a friends older brother....
Don't know where it started but its one of those sayings that catches on and sweeps the nation. I'm 58 yrs. old and I've heard it for many moons along with other sayings. "striped ass ape", "scolded dog" etc.
I have a small sticker on the sedan of a stripped ass ape. It's on my side window. It says faster than a stripped ass ape. You would be surprised the questions I get from the younger crowd about what that means or what is it??? The older guys just smile and nod their heads. I think I picked this expression from my dad many, many moons ago.
Was there not a race car called the "raped Ape" somewhere????? did the expression stem from that car in the 50's....or was that car named for the expression? which came first...the chicken or the egg?
The joke about "striped-ass ape" is - have you ever seen one? No? Well they must be pretty fast then. We've got more off-color sayings down here- nervous as a whore in church happier than a puppy with two peckers happier than a fag with a bag of dicks
How about crooked as a dog's hind leg, usually used when telling your buddy how straight his quarter panel is
MythBusters recently did an episode on this and busted the myth. The raped ape just kind of limped off to the shower and stayed there for an hour.
Must be nice to be from somewhere that has Trolls. The closest thing we have in the states are Ugly Women.
