Post A Postcard from Havana (WARNING: not dialup friendly)

I got back from Cuba last night and though I'd share some of the photos I took over there. Here's a few dozen photos, I'll post more later if people want to see them:

Edit: I've posted more photos on page #2.

(Ok so it's not american ;-))

Those model A's are mostly for tourists. It's not generally allowed for gringos to ride in the old american cars. But at tourist places, and some of the hotels have restored once used as tourist taxis. Most of the classic cars in cuba are not in very good shape, many of them sporting Lada engines and the sorts. But it's amazing to see the Cubans keeping them running with the small means they have!

I have seen other stories about the Cubans making their own parts and using Russian engines to keep the old cars going. Necessity IS the mother of invention, as they say. Any more pics would be interesting as well.....I was just telling someone the other day I thought it would be fun to see those old cars over there. Thanks for the post.

Simply amazing. Now if only I could get all my old car parts there and setup a stand. Naw! I don't think Castro would let me do that. Great pictures though. Would like to see more.

It's funny how they say, they can't get replacement parts for these old cars, but they seem to be able to get chrome wheels, hubcaps and other accessories.

Just Bloody Amazing.

It sure would be nice to take a long vacation down to Cuba just to be able to wonder into the nooks and crannies of the city.

Thanks for posting...

PBS had a show on the old american cars in cuba and thats where it showed then installing the fork lift motor in a 58ish mopar, there was a 56 caddy limo that was being used as a taxi and the motor sounded a litle wierd and it had a 4 speed with granny trans in it so who knows what was in it. In the back ground a red and white 56 ford wagon went by with a straight axle but it was not a gasser and they did a under the hood shot of a 56 ford convertible and it had a new edelbrock carb on it so they are getting parts somewhere. What are the GMC truck / bus things with the 8 lug 1 ton truck wheels? Not sure I have ever seen anything like that over here in the US.
