I'm starting a "Vintage" Tool Box Club. Here's mine, circa '62!
I showed you mine, now show me yours.

Ah man, did 3W Larry kick you out?
With a tag name Deuce in it (I assuming you have a 32 model something?). Also, I can't help but notice the wire rims on your 40. Are those early aftermarkets. I've seen ads selling Cadillac style wire wheels for Fords and such in 1951-2 Hot Rod and such mags. I'm really digging that look on your 40. Maybe a side shoot? Ken |

I use a PRESSTEEL piggyback that my Dad inherited from his Dad in '63 and was well worn then, and I inherited in '82.
It's got a cast iron base that makes it heavy to pick up even empty, but it won't tip over! My Dad had it at the Olds dealer he worked at and it got treated like the "Rat box" at a chainer show amongst all the new SnapOn boxes untill one time he went on vacation and when he returned the guys in the shop had picked the lock and emptied it, and stripped and repainted the whole box ! Now, rather than try to copy the original Maroon-Red, the painter mixed a few left overs from cans of lacquer and shot it with what turned out to be a really nice 70's era Metallic Brown-Green, then pinstriped it in gold stripeing tape. That's the way it remains today. And yea, it still has Grand Dad's and Dad's tools in it.

My most used set is a Craftsman 1/2" based set still in a little carryable Craftsman box my Father bought me for Christmas in 1962. It was my very first step up from the little bag of Ford tools in the '48 Ford! Still in action, too!
My big boxes now are (1) a circa 1952 Snap On chest with drawers; one of the drawers still contains a pamphlet discussing the manufacturing and hand fitting process used on Snap On boxes! It is filled with WWII-1965 vintage tools, and everything about the box still looks good and works smoothly. And (2) a fairly big Plomb chest, SLOWLY filling up with super duper best on the planet Plomb tools and very early Proto as I find the stuff.

Have a chopped all steel, full fendered 5W that is a 50s survivior am in the process of "restoring" the 50s style of it. Will have a 390 Cad and goodies, etc, bought it Oregon in 69 for $125. It had a 392 Hemi in before I got it, was gone when I bought it. Would like to replace the 392, but way to expensive for my blood now. As to the wheels, 53-55 Cad originals that were disassembled, polished and replated by Barroni Wheels in LA in 75. T McG posted a 3/4 front of the car in his Scottsdale GG pics. Will see what I can dig up and post, maybe take a couple new ones and have the wife post for me, I am not a Comp guy, I can turn it on, check E Mails, HAMB, get screwed on E Gay and turn it off. LOL Kirk posted a shot of the flames on the hood in his GG post, its the one with the "50s" cracked laquer paint. Now thats "REAL" patina, LOL. Later, Dave

Here are my boxes. The blue/black one is where I put all my real old tools. Stuff all the way back into the early 1900's. Most of it is Ford marked stuff. The red ones are my daily used stuff. How about old equipment? Pic of my old Sunnen hone, Sioux valve grinder, and Black Diamond drill grinder.

like an old fridge (all rounded and stuff).. I need more room...

I was just given an old MAC toolbox. As near as I can tell it dates back into the 30's.All faqlt steel, top and front caver are bolted together. The drawer slides are just flat pieces. 3 drawers and a 2 handled lift out tray. Also have 60's vintage Snap-On and Mac top boxes.

I want one of these but alas I probably can't afford it if I found it. I do remember the pride I felt when I got my first Craftsman 10 drawer. A bunch of us sprung for them when they had a sale bringing them down below 100 bucks. The roll away came later.

I own a Mac top box that is at least 40 years old as I bought it used in 1971.
This is a neat old box I picked up at a garage sale awhile back. Tag says Union Chest, Standard of Quality Since 1893, Union Steel Chest Corp. LeRoy NY. Leather handle, still had the original key in the envelope inside. I have been torn between leaving it as is, or doing in some WWII type bomber art.

[quote=hot_rod_artist]Here is my good old craftsman ! 70`s era ?
Maybe late '60s - they're exactly like my first Craftsman top box and roller that I bought in '66 or '67. Traded them in on Snap-on set in '75 that I still have. Can't get far enough away from them to take a picture, my garage belongs in the gone bad thread. |

In the early 20th Century good parking garages had a mechanic on duty. He would do lube and oil changes. Small rebuild jobs That kind of thing. While you were at the office
This is an Art Deco tool crib from an old Long Beach parking garage. It's about 14 feet long and 7 feet tall It was a place for the parking mechanic to put parts, tools, and such.It originally had an accordian gate to close off the front and back.I found this years ago. I think it is Pressed Steel, or Lyon. but has no Mfg tag. I even had a HAMB'r offer me $700.00 for it a few weeks ago. Like many things I'll have the only one in Poland soon...... Before we left for the states this time we found and got several oak Parts cabinets with tambuor doors. They will all fit together in my shop. |

In 1951 my Dad built his own tool box out of wood. Its a simple upright that looks like a large most metal storage cabinets. The bottom had its own door and was where larger tools were kept(axle pullers, etc). The top 2/3 had another door that when opened exposed a lower shelf with a pull out drawer and above that rows and rows of small nails with wrenches arranged and hung in neat rows. The very top has a lift up lid for papers and notebooks etc. I
brought it home after he died and hope to impress on my son to keep it for yet another generation! |

I've got a couple of old Plomb catalogs. PM me the dimensions on that and a pic of its internal dividers and I'll see if I can match it to a catalog.

Here's a pic of my early 70's Craftsman boxes. Looks just like the one hot rod artist has. I know that mine is from the early 70's because I know the original owner. I have since repainted the top box & heavily decaled it. Need to finish the bottom & get new pics. Brad

I forgot when you started this thread that I have this. More of a work station than tool box but it was used for tool storage.

I guess I'm in too. I have Dad's 64 complete Snap-on set here at home and an identical top and bottom at work. Also an early 60s Proto top that I carried to the track when I was racing.

I have my dad's roll away chest, middle box, and top chest, each dating pre '60. I have a full set of 1/2" drive sockets in the top, with ratchet, breaker bar, extensions etc....the brand is "None-Better" - The sockets go in 1/32 increments from 3/8 to 1 1/18". Anyone ever hear of these?

The guy said his dad bought it in January, 1940 when he went to work at the factory. What year is that ad from? It's very small by today's standards, but it works GREAT for organizing projects that are going to go on for a few days/weeks: wiring the car, rebuilding carbs, etc. Good for storing all the bits and pieces in their own compartments until you can get back to them, so nothing gets lost. I remember my dad telling me that he paid around $70-80 for them in '55-'57, and that it was more than a good weeks pay at the time. I always figured that must have been a quality tool, because that was a lot of money for a 1/2" drive socket set! |

Twenty years ago this January I went down to the basement because the oil burner was making some odd sounds. This Craftsman tool box was on a bench 24 inches away from the oil burner and I was standing between the two. Went upstairs to call the oil burner service guy, the second I hung up the phone the burner blew up.

I am too ashamed to show mine because of the condition of my shops. I have 3 roll aways and 2 top boxes plus little boxes everywhere and cabinets in every place you can imagine for the bigger tools. Maybe I will get it cleaned up some day and put up some photos.

the little old vintage Craftsman box is mine, not much of a toolbox, i use it to carry all my One shot, brushes, and pinstripe stuff in.
the old wooden tool box under the lathe in the garage pic is my friend Randy's. it's full of lathe tooling. Real old. I love it. one of my favorite by far that i've ever seen.

The only "vintage" tool boxes I have are two small hand-carry Sears Craftsman boxes from the early 70's. Those with the lift-out tray in the hammertone grey finish. I still have them and use them. My everyday use tool box is a set of top, intermediate and bottom roll-away Craftsman I bought over the last year when they were on sale. Sears, since they merged with K-Mart, is discontinuing a lot of tool lines. You all need to be on the lookout for them in the stores. All three of my boxes were part of a discontinued line the store had in their "clearance" area. Bargins are where you find them. I'll have to start going out on the prowl on Saturday mornings to the garage sales and read the paper for the estate sales for the "good stuff".

Here is a Craftsman I picked up at a garage sale for $15, it was rough looks wise, but no dents, and perfect gaps, the slides are alot better than todays Craftsman. I got this Snap-On last week for helping a elderly gentlemen down the street move some furniture, I don't know if I can save it, the drawers are fine, but I don't know if I can patch the rust holes in the top tray, any suggestions? Also anyone know age of the Snap-On?

Here's mine. The small carry around is one from the 80's. Carried in the trunk of my 1st car. The small red Snap On is my 8yr. old sons handed down from his grandfather. and the black one is my new one. (needed more room). Sign me up.

Here's my first tool box from 1960. It came with a complete set of Craftsman Tools, some of which I still use to this day. Cool old decals of the day also.

Well here are the results of my "attempted" restoration, I wish my camera treated me as well as it did this tool box! Some how I've managed to spend as much time on the old emblem as I did the rest of it! Last edited by BKillian; 01-20-2007 at 01:09 PM. |

I love old tool`s !!!!!!!!!!

Nice boxes, y'all. After looking at the pictures in this thread over and over for the last couple of months, I went out and picked up a cool old Cornwell 10 drawer top box this week. Currently looking for a matching bottom so I can throw out my funky blue Craftsman.

Here is my submission to the club, it was my great uncle's from the 30's or 40's. It is a vintage Snap on bottom box. The one drawer has a cool embossed Snap on logo. I tried to get it to show up in the pics.

I like the old Proto logo, remember when mainstream companys could have naked chicks in there logos? Me neither. The sign is painted on masonite. It must have been part of a tool display. The BluePoint box is made of some kind of die cast zinc/aluminum?

Here's the tool box that I use with the Bellytank. (For obvious reasons). I don't know who made these, but I suspect they also made vacuum cleaners.

You should have bailing wire in there, not zip ties,. It would be more traditional. That's an awesome tool box! I've never seen one before.

My grandpa use to own a slot car track in Westminster Ca back in the 60's..... This was my dads slot car tool box, then my uncles, and then it was my slot car tool box. Now it just sits around my garage.

I am a widow of a motorhead. I was wondering how I might go about selling a very vintage large MAC tool box? I can take pictures of it and send to anyone who is interested in it.
Saw some of the ones on here and it is very large and great for a motorhead, as I am sure he would want it to be used. If you like you can reply to sjsohio@columbus.rr.com Thanks shook/ohio |

just found this sight while trying to find info on my old snap on that i got from my ex. sorry, i'm not a rodder, i'm a wheeler, so i don't normally hang on these forums, but there are some sweet boxes in this thread.
does anyone know the time period for the snap on kr537a top boxes? that will help me figure out what my lower box is. my ex bought both boxes used in the early 70's. i'm trying to find a new slide for the rollaway, part number stamped in it is 8-567, but i cant' find it on snap ons sight. i'm going to talk to the rep today when he comes out, but if anyone has one or can help me find one, that'd be great. |

Here's a Snap-On box I got from some guy around the corner from my house. My Dad had just left and came back around the block and asked me if I had 20 bucks. Was setting on the curb with a For Sale sign on it. Said it was his Dad's but it was too small. What a sentimental guy. Score for me though! Striping by Spent.
I've got a couple of old Kennedy Kits that belonged to my grandfather. One has a leather wrapped handle.

Here's my Dad's tool box I got from him a few years ago. I've got a picture of the Christmas he got it and I'm crawling around so it must've been '68. If you want larger pics go to http://classicdragsters.com/v/automobilia/ and you can see them 2592x1728.

I've had luck just looking at on the Snap-on website and looking at the parts catalog, and checking the other boxes with as close to the same part# as the one you have and seeing what # the slides are if they match they will work. |

I have an older Kenndey tool box that my father left me. It is a stacked unit. I really can't tell how old it is because they have had that trademark brown for forever. I am powdercoating it soon. I know I should keep it brown and used looking but since I plan on using this for the rest of my life and there are some spots where the paint is lifting. I thought now would be a good chance to powdercoat it black. Most things I would just keep it's vintage integrity but I though my father would have liked it black. Any thoughts on changing the color?

Funny you should say something about it 29 sedanman. I actually pulled my wife from powdercoating the Kenndedy Box black because I thought I should focus on buying other tools that I really need. I think I may just keep it brown now that you say the paint can be ordered through them. Thanks Buddie!!!!!!!!

Actually not a Hoffman but it is a Simco. The compartments are not big enough for 1/24 slots but good for formula style 1/32. These were sold for tackle boxes I got mine with shotgun shells in it. I also
use mine for a paint box. Hoffmans are better quality than these I also have a couple of those. There some useless knowledge for you. |

This one was made by Yarder Mfg.Co. of Toledo Ohio around 1920.It was used by a sign painter from Toledo from the early 1920's to the 1940's.I acquired it last year from the guy's grandson.I had thoughts of using it but when I got into cleaning it out,I decided to preserve it as is.Aside from a light cleaning and renewing the brushes (more than 60)inside,it is just as I received it.
I have several examples of Kennedy and old Craftsman boxes;both tool and machinists and one from Poland that was given to me awhile back.I'll have to get some pictures of those.I also have several old tackle boxes that I have spruced up.My current paint box is a J.C.Higgins "eyeball"-style box. One of the wildest boxes I have is an old Shapleigh Hardware/E.C.Simmons salesman's box that has SIXTEEN fold out trays. |

Hello, Does anybody know anything about this tool box year or value. I found it at work and they were going to trash it. I'm not a mechanic but I do know about Snap On tools. It also had this Torqometer, Inch pounds(TQ-12-b).

The bottom box is the exact same style as one I have from 1940...though I think they used that same style well into the '50s and maybe '60s. Mine doesn't look half that nice though. The top box is definately later than mine, but it matches the bottom. Very, very nice. -Brad

I don't know if the photos loaded or not. I got this box from the estate of a master mechanic. I was told by a fellow that said he was a member of the Craftsman club that it was from the 1930s. I have tried to research it but keep ending up with blanks. I would appreciate any info on this box. Also you folk have some fantastic boxes. Sorry folks my files are too big and i'm not smart enough to change them.

This is the bottom of my Dad's tool box. I've emptied it out dis-assembled part of it and I've bought paint and stuff to restore it.
A few years ago I cleaned up the top unit but was never satisfied with the paint. Gonna fix that too. Dad always has 2 lbs. in that 1 lb. bag, I'm going to get an intermediate box, paint them to match and work this drawing int the top cover somehow. I have the sign from the place Dad had after WWII. I'll clean it up and that well go up near the tool box.

Rather than buy an un-matching intermediate box, keep it the way your dad had it, and use the box for storing specialty tools like wiring tools, punches, body tools, etc. Stuff you don't use regularly, but that you gotta have. I've also used my old Snap-on box as a "project" box. For instance, when I was rebuilding and modifying the front hubs on my '54 Buick, I had all the new bearings, brake hardware, etc. stored neatly in the top box. If you ever start a project you know is going to take a while, that has a lot of little parts or something, having a nice organized box to store them in makes the project easier--especially if you start it and can't get to finishing it that week. Or year. -Brad

Here is my 1924-25 Snap On Dealer box. During the early-mid 20's Snap-on attempted to sell their tools at hardware stores, an idea which failed, but the truck delivery system proved to work quite well!

Here's a couple boxes I've been practicing on. I'm not very good. One is an old circular saw box and the other an old craftsman toolbox. No clue how old but they're both found items that cost me nothing.

Here's a vintage tool box with vintage tools included that I acquired since this post was started. All tools date between 1920 and 1930.Included is a set of 4-point sockets in 1/2 inch drive,a set of sockets in 7/16ths hex drive, and an unusual combination hex breaker bar/T handle. Also included is another set of 1930's era tools I picked up awhile ago.Duro and Indestro were the same company.
Included in the set was a Snap-On T handle that has the logo in vertical letters instead of angled. This was only used between 1920 and 1930. Cost of both sets was a total of $19. |

i was searching on ebay and i was suprised at all the vintage boxes on there. people who were selling them were worried about rust and dents, hell thats what gives them character. i really need some old ones again, i bought a craftsman box rollaround about ten years ago, piece of shit. i have two large drawers stuck together again for the hundredeth time, due to one going off it's tracks. i remember when they were some of the best you could get. time to search out some oldies. the nice thing about everyone being on the snap on ,mac craze,is the older good boxes seem to have taken a hit in price. i wouldn't mind finding an older kennedy box. went looking for a box to hide my battery in in my trunk, and no one seems to even have metal boxes anymore. dam plastic crap.

I finally pulled out my grandfather's 1958 Snapon ToolBox model KR-377B from storage and stocked my tools in it. I even have the original master lock that he used. It's awesome! Hope you guys enjoy the pics.

i will get pictures up as soon as i can,i just got a kennedy kit k-32 long tool box for 10 dollars, from what i can tell the logo on the tag inside matches the 1911 kennedy logo, the first year of production. the kennedy logo on the outside is also hand painted. it's staying just the way it is,rust on the bottom and all. too much character to mess with.

all right heres the pictures, the paint isn't flaking or anything it just got damp from it raining when i brought it in,it was still dusty.
![]() ![]() ![]() edit this has to be 1914 or later, because the tag says van wert ohio, they moved there in 1914 the kennedy on the box is def hand painted like a signature.

Hey, guys,
These are bitchen boxes. They were made by the Blackhawk Tool Co., and they're getting expensive--but I have actually seen them on a certain online auction site with their original tools, basically a rack or two of sockets, a couple socket wrenches and, I believe, a speed wrench. Bobby, you should make an even smaller tank out of your toolbox. There's gotta be a miniature-sized record out there for a miniature-sized belly tank! |

Hey I got one like that. Got it a few years back at a yard sale too and the same price. I gave it to my boy, he put hot wheels in it for a while, then I started missing my tools. this is what I looked like when I found them in his tool box. He's a cool kid. I have a few old craftsman boxes too. I can't resist a tool box in a yard sale.

Interesting stuff. Does anybody have any of the old scripted "Ford" tools? I've got a wrench or two around here someplace.

Here is mine:
It was my grandfather's, and i believe it is from the early 70's as it has a snap on tool book showing where he made payments from 1970. It was up north all of its life and has some rust/dents/dings. I really want to restore it, but then again, i want to keep it original since it has history. If it wasnt a family member's, it would already have been restored. Help me out!! What do you guys think i should do? Do i leave the rust and let it get worse? Or?? Last edited by TL95SVT; 01-15-2011 at 11:35 AM. |

Not a tool "box" but I carry my emergency tool kit for my Stude in a heavy canvas zippered bag my Dad was issued during the Depression when he was in the Civilian Conversation Corps out in Washington state. It's about 18" long, 10" deep and 10" wide; OD Green with a super heavy duty zipper that has a 2 inch wide flap that folds over it and it's waterproof, Dad may have done that though. A lot of their gear was old WW I surplus so I'm guessing this was as well. Dad used it to carry his ammo, gun cleaning kit and other hunting gear through the 40's, 50's and 60's. When it surfaced in Mom's basement while we were cleaning out the house my siblings were going to pitch it in the trash. I grabbed it and said, "Like Hell!" It looks right at home in the trunk of the Stude just like it did in his '48 Merc Club Coupe, now if I had just found that...........

I've had the old grey Craftsman box for a long time- it was my dad's.
The top box I got a little while back at a used tool store. I grabbed it quick for a good price. It's an old S-K piece. I don't know if its considered a machinist's box or not. I've never seen another like it. It's extra cool for me 'cuz I've always picked up S-K tools when I found them. It has an olive green wrinkle finish. The only problem is the painted initials on the top. Not very nice red paint. Does anyone make the correct paint to redo that part? Anyone know the ages of these? Dan

Here's mine...another old Snap-On box.
![]() My dad bought it at an auction when he was about 10 years old. We think it is late 40's/early 50's vintage. The coolest part doesn't show in the photo...it has a "garage door" front that rolls down to cover the drawers...keeping people out of your tools!

Great post. Tool boxes are like garages. You cant have to much garage or to many tool boxes. My grandpa bought a Craftsman work bench with drawers and a roll around tool box in the 50's. When he passed away my Dad got it. Dad bought a new Rem Line in 1966 when he worked at the Chevy Garage. When Dad retired from the garage he put the Rem Line on Grandpa's Craftsman box. When Dad passed away I got the Rem Line and Craftsman boxes. Both came with some neat old tools. Tool Boxes are like cars, they have a history and provide great memories.

I needed a tool tower to put my bigger stuff in, but was taken aback at the prices being asked. My solution: a early seventies Pepsi machine. I'm in the process of gutting the machine and adding drawers. I even wired the front so the Pepsi sign at the top will be lit with LED's

Blackhawk tools came out with this box to showcase its Nuggets line of sockets in 1947. I am pretty sure they never got into the vacume bussiness. They were a pretty big tool name in the day. (still around as far as I can tell)

Here are some of my tool boxes. I used to keep the upper chest at work. It is ridiculously heavy and has no handles or legible badges. I have tried to find out who manufactured it and approximate age, but have had no luck. The top lid is a style I had never seen before. The drawers are the compound slide type and operate well whether they are half empty or loaded to the hilt. The guy I got the roller chest from said he thought it was a Proto. It has no badges just the outline of an oval with the ends squared off. They are both very sturdy although the roller needs a new set of casters and a paint job. I actually prefer these two boxes over the Craftsman set I bought about 10 years ago. There is just a world of difference in the quality of construction.

That is so cool. There was one of these on Ebay last year, and I watched it until it closed...went for too much money for me, but I would have LOVED to have had it. I saved pictures of it and was going to post them, but obviously there's no need.

Count me in! not a rollaway, or even a toolbox really, but old none the less... I think it's intended use was as a tackle box. I'm gonna use it for road tools though. I found it in the dumpster at work, and it had this pepto pink paint on it. It looks so much like my valve cover I had to take it home. I'm gonna paint it to match my car, HOK candy blue, with pearl white stripes on the top, and handle. and the lettering if i can figer out how to do it clean.
Anyone have an idea as to how old this is? My guess is taintes because it looks like my cover, I'm asssuming mid 50's, early 60's? ![]() It has this cool, redundant safety latch incase you forget to latch it. ![]()

i have a Snap-on bottom box similar to the one in the first post, the middle box is a bit later maybe 70's. i also have a Snap-on top box that was designed to fit in the boot(trunk) of a Austin Mini, i don't use it anymore as it's a bit small as you can imagine. i'll get some pics tomorrow and post them up

I picked up a nice old tool box from an auction recently, but I don't know who made it. I'm sure you guys can help me out. The 2nd picture shows where it looks like the badge used to be, as well as the unique markings on the handles
Edit: Looks to have the same handle markings as the ones in Goldie's picture on the last page Last edited by fatrhino; 02-01-2009 at 09:20 PM. |

Nice yeah I used to buy my mooneyes and Mr.Hoorsepower shirts there back then. That was when Mike Corwin ran the counter. Wish TCR was still around but they were costly and we had quite a few speed shops back then Race Prep, Victory Circle, TCR.... Now I can only say to my knowledge Victory Circle is the only one and way to overpriced on parts. You guys sure turned out some nice sprint cars back then.-Weeks

Any suggestions for restoring (painting) a vintage (1940'-50's) craftsman roll-around.
Bottom roll around is ok but the top needs paint. I'm wondering if any one knows where to get the matching color paint. Thanks |

I traded my everlasting soul to the devil for this tool box, I wasn't using it no how. Really traded an old bow for it. Will make a great battery box in the 34. Think it is a router box. Don't know how old it might be.

Scored this 1965 Snap On box loaded with tools at the Crane Cams
liquidation last month.Pulled the drawers out and found old receipts from bike shops in Long Beach and stuff leading me to believe the original/previous owner worked for Holman-Moody. ![]() And here's the Rem Line I got for HS graduation in 78.
