I'm starting a "Vintage" Tool Box Club. Here's mine, circa '62!
I showed you mine, now show me yours.

Ah man, did 3W Larry kick you out?
With a tag name Deuce in it (I assuming you have a 32 model something?). Also, I can't help but notice the wire rims on your 40. Are those early aftermarkets. I've seen ads selling Cadillac style wire wheels for Fords and such in 1951-2 Hot Rod and such mags. I'm really digging that look on your 40. Maybe a side shoot? Ken |

I use a PRESSTEEL piggyback that my Dad inherited from his Dad in '63 and was well worn then, and I inherited in '82.
It's got a cast iron base that makes it heavy to pick up even empty, but it won't tip over! My Dad had it at the Olds dealer he worked at and it got treated like the "Rat box" at a chainer show amongst all the new SnapOn boxes untill one time he went on vacation and when he returned the guys in the shop had picked the lock and emptied it, and stripped and repainted the whole box ! Now, rather than try to copy the original Maroon-Red, the painter mixed a few left overs from cans of lacquer and shot it with what turned out to be a really nice 70's era Metallic Brown-Green, then pinstriped it in gold stripeing tape. That's the way it remains today. And yea, it still has Grand Dad's and Dad's tools in it.

My most used set is a Craftsman 1/2" based set still in a little carryable Craftsman box my Father bought me for Christmas in 1962. It was my very first step up from the little bag of Ford tools in the '48 Ford! Still in action, too!
My big boxes now are (1) a circa 1952 Snap On chest with drawers; one of the drawers still contains a pamphlet discussing the manufacturing and hand fitting process used on Snap On boxes! It is filled with WWII-1965 vintage tools, and everything about the box still looks good and works smoothly. And (2) a fairly big Plomb chest, SLOWLY filling up with super duper best on the planet Plomb tools and very early Proto as I find the stuff.

Have a chopped all steel, full fendered 5W that is a 50s survivior am in the process of "restoring" the 50s style of it. Will have a 390 Cad and goodies, etc, bought it Oregon in 69 for $125. It had a 392 Hemi in before I got it, was gone when I bought it. Would like to replace the 392, but way to expensive for my blood now. As to the wheels, 53-55 Cad originals that were disassembled, polished and replated by Barroni Wheels in LA in 75. T McG posted a 3/4 front of the car in his Scottsdale GG pics. Will see what I can dig up and post, maybe take a couple new ones and have the wife post for me, I am not a Comp guy, I can turn it on, check E Mails, HAMB, get screwed on E Gay and turn it off. LOL Kirk posted a shot of the flames on the hood in his GG post, its the one with the "50s" cracked laquer paint. Now thats "REAL" patina, LOL. Later, Dave

Here are my boxes. The blue/black one is where I put all my real old tools. Stuff all the way back into the early 1900's. Most of it is Ford marked stuff. The red ones are my daily used stuff. How about old equipment? Pic of my old Sunnen hone, Sioux valve grinder, and Black Diamond drill grinder.

like an old fridge (all rounded and stuff).. I need more room...

I was just given an old MAC toolbox. As near as I can tell it dates back into the 30's.All faqlt steel, top and front caver are bolted together. The drawer slides are just flat pieces. 3 drawers and a 2 handled lift out tray. Also have 60's vintage Snap-On and Mac top boxes.

I want one of these but alas I probably can't afford it if I found it. I do remember the pride I felt when I got my first Craftsman 10 drawer. A bunch of us sprung for them when they had a sale bringing them down below 100 bucks. The roll away came later.

I own a Mac top box that is at least 40 years old as I bought it used in 1971.
This is a neat old box I picked up at a garage sale awhile back. Tag says Union Chest, Standard of Quality Since 1893, Union Steel Chest Corp. LeRoy NY. Leather handle, still had the original key in the envelope inside. I have been torn between leaving it as is, or doing in some WWII type bomber art.

[quote=hot_rod_artist]Here is my good old craftsman ! 70`s era ?
Maybe late '60s - they're exactly like my first Craftsman top box and roller that I bought in '66 or '67. Traded them in on Snap-on set in '75 that I still have. Can't get far enough away from them to take a picture, my garage belongs in the gone bad thread. |

In the early 20th Century good parking garages had a mechanic on duty. He would do lube and oil changes. Small rebuild jobs That kind of thing. While you were at the office
This is an Art Deco tool crib from an old Long Beach parking garage. It's about 14 feet long and 7 feet tall It was a place for the parking mechanic to put parts, tools, and such.It originally had an accordian gate to close off the front and back.I found this years ago. I think it is Pressed Steel, or Lyon. but has no Mfg tag. I even had a HAMB'r offer me $700.00 for it a few weeks ago. Like many things I'll have the only one in Poland soon...... Before we left for the states this time we found and got several oak Parts cabinets with tambuor doors. They will all fit together in my shop. |

In 1951 my Dad built his own tool box out of wood. Its a simple upright that looks like a large most metal storage cabinets. The bottom had its own door and was where larger tools were kept(axle pullers, etc). The top 2/3 had another door that when opened exposed a lower shelf with a pull out drawer and above that rows and rows of small nails with wrenches arranged and hung in neat rows. The very top has a lift up lid for papers and notebooks etc. I
brought it home after he died and hope to impress on my son to keep it for yet another generation! |

I've got a couple of old Plomb catalogs. PM me the dimensions on that and a pic of its internal dividers and I'll see if I can match it to a catalog.

Here's a pic of my early 70's Craftsman boxes. Looks just like the one hot rod artist has. I know that mine is from the early 70's because I know the original owner. I have since repainted the top box & heavily decaled it. Need to finish the bottom & get new pics. Brad

I forgot when you started this thread that I have this. More of a work station than tool box but it was used for tool storage.

I guess I'm in too. I have Dad's 64 complete Snap-on set here at home and an identical top and bottom at work. Also an early 60s Proto top that I carried to the track when I was racing.

The guy said his dad bought it in January, 1940 when he went to work at the factory. What year is that ad from? It's very small by today's standards, but it works GREAT for organizing projects that are going to go on for a few days/weeks: wiring the car, rebuilding carbs, etc. Good for storing all the bits and pieces in their own compartments until you can get back to them, so nothing gets lost. I remember my dad telling me that he paid around $70-80 for them in '55-'57, and that it was more than a good weeks pay at the time. I always figured that must have been a quality tool, because that was a lot of money for a 1/2" drive socket set! |

Twenty years ago this January I went down to the basement because the oil burner was making some odd sounds. This Craftsman tool box was on a bench 24 inches away from the oil burner and I was standing between the two. Went upstairs to call the oil burner service guy, the second I hung up the phone the burner blew up.

I am too ashamed to show mine because of the condition of my shops. I have 3 roll aways and 2 top boxes plus little boxes everywhere and cabinets in every place you can imagine for the bigger tools. Maybe I will get it cleaned up some day and put up some photos.

the little old vintage Craftsman box is mine, not much of a toolbox, i use it to carry all my One shot, brushes, and pinstripe stuff in.
the old wooden tool box under the lathe in the garage pic is my friend Randy's. it's full of lathe tooling. Real old. I love it. one of my favorite by far that i've ever seen.

The only "vintage" tool boxes I have are two small hand-carry Sears Craftsman boxes from the early 70's. Those with the lift-out tray in the hammertone grey finish. I still have them and use them. My everyday use tool box is a set of top, intermediate and bottom roll-away Craftsman I bought over the last year when they were on sale. Sears, since they merged with K-Mart, is discontinuing a lot of tool lines. You all need to be on the lookout for them in the stores. All three of my boxes were part of a discontinued line the store had in their "clearance" area. Bargins are where you find them. I'll have to start going out on the prowl on Saturday mornings to the garage sales and read the paper for the estate sales for the "good stuff".

This is my first post, glad I found this board! Here is a Craftsman I picked up at a garage sale for $15, it was rough looks wise, but no dents, and perfect gaps, the slides are alot better than todays Craftsman. I got this Snap-On last week for helping a elderly gentlemen down the street move some furniture, I don't know if I can save it, the drawers are fine, but I don't know if I can patch the rust holes in the top tray, any suggestions? Also anyone know age of the Snap-On?

Here's mine. The small carry around is one from the 80's. Carried in the trunk of my 1st car. The small red Snap On is my 8yr. old sons handed down from his grandfather. and the black one is my new one. (needed more room). Sign me up.

Here's my first tool box from 1960. It came with a complete set of Craftsman Tools, some of which I still use to this day. Cool old decals of the day also.

Well here are the results of my "attempted" restoration, I wish my camera treated me as well as it did this tool box! Some how I've managed to spend as much time on the old emblem as I did the rest of it! Last edited by BKillian; 01-20-2007 at 01:09 PM. |

I love old tool`s !!!!!!!!!!

Nice boxes, y'all. After looking at the pictures in this thread over and over for the last couple of months, I went out and picked up a cool old Cornwell 10 drawer top box this week. Currently looking for a matching bottom so I can throw out my funky blue Craftsman.

Here is my submission to the club, it was my great uncle's from the 30's or 40's. It is a vintage Snap on bottom box. The one drawer has a cool embossed Snap on logo. I tried to get it to show up in the pics.

I like the old Proto logo, remember when mainstream companys could have naked chicks in there logos? Me neither. The sign is painted on masonite. It must have been part of a tool display. The BluePoint box is made of some kind of die cast zinc/aluminum?

Here's the tool box that I use with the Bellytank. (For obvious reasons). I don't know who made these, but I suspect they also made vacuum cleaners.

You should have bailing wire in there, not zip ties,. It would be more traditional. That's an awesome tool box! I've never seen one before.

My grandpa use to own a slot car track in Westminster Ca back in the 60's..... This was my dads slot car tool box, then my uncles, and then it was my slot car tool box. Now it just sits around my garage.

I am a widow of a motorhead. I was wondering how I might go about selling a very vintage large MAC tool box? I can take pictures of it and send to anyone who is interested in it.
Saw some of the ones on here and it is very large and great for a motorhead, as I am sure he would want it to be used. If you like you can reply to sjsohio@columbus.rr.com Thanks shook/ohio |

just found this sight while trying to find info on my old snap on that i got from my ex. sorry, i'm not a rodder, i'm a wheeler, so i don't normally hang on these forums, but there are some sweet boxes in this thread.
does anyone know the time period for the snap on kr537a top boxes? that will help me figure out what my lower box is. my ex bought both boxes used in the early 70's. i'm trying to find a new slide for the rollaway, part number stamped in it is 8-567, but i cant' find it on snap ons sight. i'm going to talk to the rep today when he comes out, but if anyone has one or can help me find one, that'd be great. |

Here's a Snap-On box I got from some guy around the corner from my house. My Dad had just left and came back around the block and asked me if I had 20 bucks. Was setting on the curb with a For Sale sign on it. Said it was his Dad's but it was too small. What a sentimental guy. Score for me though! Striping by Spent.
I've got a couple of old Kennedy Kits that belonged to my grandfather. One has a leather wrapped handle.

Here's my Dad's tool box I got from him a few years ago. I've got a picture of the Christmas he got it and I'm crawling around so it must've been '68. If you want larger pics go to http://classicdragsters.com/v/automobilia/ and you can see them 2592x1728.

I've had luck just looking at on the Snap-on website and looking at the parts catalog, and checking the other boxes with as close to the same part# as the one you have and seeing what # the slides are if they match they will work. |

I have an older Kenndey tool box that my father left me. It is a stacked unit. I really can't tell how old it is because they have had that trademark brown for forever. I am powdercoating it soon. I know I should keep it brown and used looking but since I plan on using this for the rest of my life and there are some spots where the paint is lifting. I thought now would be a good chance to powdercoat it black. Most things I would just keep it's vintage integrity but I though my father would have liked it black. Any thoughts on changing the color?

Funny you should say something about it 29 sedanman. I actually pulled my wife from powdercoating the Kenndedy Box black because I thought I should focus on buying other tools that I really need. I think I may just keep it brown now that you say the paint can be ordered through them. Thanks Buddie!!!!!!!!

Actually not a Hoffman but it is a Simco. The compartments are not big enough for 1/24 slots but good for formula style 1/32. These were sold for tackle boxes I got mine with shotgun shells in it. I also
use mine for a paint box. Hoffmans are better quality than these I also have a couple of those. There some useless knowledge for you. |

This one was made by Yarder Mfg.Co. of Toledo Ohio around 1920.It was used by a sign painter from Toledo from the early 1920's to the 1940's.I acquired it last year from the guy's grandson.I had thoughts of using it but when I got into cleaning it out,I decided to preserve it as is.Aside from a light cleaning and renewing the brushes (more than 60)inside,it is just as I received it.
I have several examples of Kennedy and old Craftsman boxes;both tool and machinists and one from Poland that was given to me awhile back.I'll have to get some pictures of those.I also have several old tackle boxes that I have spruced up.My current paint box is a J.C.Higgins "eyeball"-style box. One of the wildest boxes I have is an old Shapleigh Hardware/E.C.Simmons salesman's box that has SIXTEEN fold out trays.

Hello, Does anybody know anything about this tool box year or value. I found it at work and they were going to trash it. I'm not a mechanic but I do know about Snap On tools. It also had this Torqometer, Inch pounds(TQ-12-b).

The bottom box is the exact same style as one I have from 1940...though I think they used that same style well into the '50s and maybe '60s. Mine doesn't look half that nice though. The top box is definately later than mine, but it matches the bottom. Very, very nice. -Brad

I don't know if the photos loaded or not. I got this box from the estate of a master mechanic. I was told by a fellow that said he was a member of the Craftsman club that it was from the 1930s. I have tried to research it but keep ending up with blanks. I would appreciate any info on this box. Also you folk have some fantastic boxes. Sorry folks my files are too big and i'm not smart enough to change them.

This is the bottom of my Dad's tool box. I've emptied it out dis-assembled part of it and I've bought paint and stuff to restore it.
A few years ago I cleaned up the top unit but was never satisfied with the paint. Gonna fix that too. Dad always has 2 lbs. in that 1 lb. bag, I'm going to get an intermediate box, paint them to match and work this drawing int the top cover somehow. I have the sign from the place Dad had after WWII. I'll clean it up and that well go up near the tool box. |

Rather than buy an un-matching intermediate box, keep it the way your dad had it, and use the box for storing specialty tools like wiring tools, punches, body tools, etc. Stuff you don't use regularly, but that you gotta have. I've also used my old Snap-on box as a "project" box. For instance, when I was rebuilding and modifying the front hubs on my '54 Buick, I had all the new bearings, brake hardware, etc. stored neatly in the top box. If you ever start a project you know is going to take a while, that has a lot of little parts or something, having a nice organized box to store them in makes the project easier--especially if you start it and can't get to finishing it that week. Or year. -Brad

Here is my 1924-25 Snap On Dealer box. During the early-mid 20's Snap-on attempted to sell their tools at hardware stores, an idea which failed, but the truck delivery system proved to work quite well!

Here's a couple boxes I've been practicing on. I'm not very good. One is an old circular saw box and the other an old craftsman toolbox. No clue how old but they're both found items that cost me nothing.

Here's a vintage tool box with vintage tools included that I acquired since this post was started. All tools date between 1920 and 1930.Included is a set of 4-point sockets in 1/2 inch drive,a set of sockets in 7/16ths hex drive, and an unusual combination hex breaker bar/T handle. Also included is another set of 1930's era tools I picked up awhile ago.Duro and Indestro were the same company.
Included in the set was a Snap-On T handle that has the logo in vertical letters instead of angled. This was only used between 1920 and 1930. Cost of both sets was a total of $19.

i was searching on ebay and i was suprised at all the vintage boxes on there. people who were selling them were worried about rust and dents, hell thats what gives them character. i really need some old ones again, i bought a craftsman box rollaround about ten years ago, piece of shit. i have two large drawers stuck together again for the hundredeth time, due to one going off it's tracks. i remember when they were some of the best you could get. time to search out some oldies. the nice thing about everyone being on the snap on ,mac craze,is the older good boxes seem to have taken a hit in price. i wouldn't mind finding an older kennedy box. went looking for a box to hide my battery in in my trunk, and no one seems to even have metal boxes anymore. dam plastic crap.

I finally pulled out my grandfather's 1958 Snapon ToolBox model KR-377B from storage and stocked my tools in it. I even have the original master lock that he used. It's awesome! Hope you guys enjoy the pics.

i will get pictures up as soon as i can,i just got a kennedy kit k-32 long tool box for 10 dollars, from what i can tell the logo on the tag inside matches the 1911 kennedy logo, the first year of production. the kennedy logo on the outside is also hand painted. it's staying just the way it is,rust on the bottom and all. too much character to mess with.

all right heres the pictures, the paint isn't flaking or anything it just got damp from it raining when i brought it in,it was still dusty.
![]() ![]() ![]() edit this has to be 1914 or later, because the tag says van wert ohio, they moved there in 1914 the kennedy on the box is def hand painted like a signature.

Hey, guys,
These are bitchen boxes. They were made by the Blackhawk Tool Co., and they're getting expensive--but I have actually seen them on a certain online auction site with their original tools, basically a rack or two of sockets, a couple socket wrenches and, I believe, a speed wrench. Bobby, you should make an even smaller tank out of your toolbox. There's gotta be a miniature-sized record out there for a miniature-sized belly tank! |

Hey I got one like that. Got it a few years back at a yard sale too and the same price. I gave it to my boy, he put hot wheels in it for a while, then I started missing my tools. this is what I looked like when I found them in his tool box. He's a cool kid. I have a few old craftsman boxes too. I can't resist a tool box in a yard sale.

Interesting stuff. Does anybody have any of the old scripted "Ford" tools? I've got a wrench or two around here someplace.

Here is mine:
![]() ![]() It was my grandfather's, and i believe it is from the early 70's as it has a snap on tool book showing where he made payments from 1970. It was up north all of its life and has some rust/dents/dings. I really want to restore it, but then again, i want to keep it original since it has history. If it wasnt a family member's, it would already have been restored. Help me out!! What do you guys think i should do? Do i leave the rust and let it get worse? Or??

Not a tool "box" but I carry my emergency tool kit for my Stude in a heavy canvas zippered bag my Dad was issued during the Depression when he was in the Civilian Conversation Corps out in Washington state. It's about 18" long, 10" deep and 10" wide; OD Green with a super heavy duty zipper that has a 2 inch wide flap that folds over it and it's waterproof, Dad may have done that though. A lot of their gear was old WW I surplus so I'm guessing this was as well. Dad used it to carry his ammo, gun cleaning kit and other hunting gear through the 40's, 50's and 60's. When it surfaced in Mom's basement while we were cleaning out the house my siblings were going to pitch it in the trash. I grabbed it and said, "Like Hell!" It looks right at home in the trunk of the Stude just like it did in his '48 Merc Club Coupe, now if I had just found that...........

I've had the old grey Craftsman box for a long time- it was my dad's.
The top box I got a little while back at a used tool store. I grabbed it quick for a good price. It's an old S-K piece. I don't know if its considered a machinist's box or not. I've never seen another like it. It's extra cool for me 'cuz I've always picked up S-K tools when I found them. It has an olive green wrinkle finish. The only problem is the painted initials on the top. Not very nice red paint. Does anyone make the correct paint to redo that part? Anyone know the ages of these? Dan

Here's mine...another old Snap-On box.
![]() My dad bought it at an auction when he was about 10 years old. We think it is late 40's/early 50's vintage. The coolest part doesn't show in the photo...it has a "garage door" front that rolls down to cover the drawers...keeping people out of your tools!

Great post. Tool boxes are like garages. You cant have to much garage or to many tool boxes. My grandpa bought a Craftsman work bench with drawers and a roll around tool box in the 50's. When he passed away my Dad got it. Dad bought a new Rem Line in 1966 when he worked at the Chevy Garage. When Dad retired from the garage he put the Rem Line on Grandpa's Craftsman box. When Dad passed away I got the Rem Line and Craftsman boxes. Both came with some neat old tools. Tool Boxes are like cars, they have a history and provide great memories.

I needed a tool tower to put my bigger stuff in, but was taken aback at the prices being asked. My solution: a early seventies Pepsi machine. I'm in the process of gutting the machine and adding drawers. I even wired the front so the Pepsi sign at the top will be lit with LED's

Blackhawk tools came out with this box to showcase its Nuggets line of sockets in 1947. I am pretty sure they never got into the vacume bussiness. They were a pretty big tool name in the day. (still around as far as I can tell)

Here are some of my tool boxes. I used to keep the upper chest at work. It is ridiculously heavy and has no handles or legible badges. I have tried to find out who manufactured it and approximate age, but have had no luck. The top lid is a style I had never seen before. The drawers are the compound slide type and operate well whether they are half empty or loaded to the hilt. The guy I got the roller chest from said he thought it was a Proto. It has no badges just the outline of an oval with the ends squared off. They are both very sturdy although the roller needs a new set of casters and a paint job. I actually prefer these two boxes over the Craftsman set I bought about 10 years ago. There is just a world of difference in the quality of construction.

That is so cool. There was one of these on Ebay last year, and I watched it until it closed...went for too much money for me, but I would have LOVED to have had it. I saved pictures of it and was going to post them, but obviously there's no need.

Count me in! not a rollaway, or even a toolbox really, but old none the less... I think it's intended use was as a tackle box. I'm gonna use it for road tools though. I found it in the dumpster at work, and it had this pepto pink paint on it. It looks so much like my valve cover I had to take it home. I'm gonna paint it to match my car, HOK candy blue, with pearl white stripes on the top, and handle. and the lettering if i can figer out how to do it clean.
Anyone have an idea as to how old this is? My guess is taintes because it looks like my cover, I'm asssuming mid 50's, early 60's? ![]() It has this cool, redundant safety latch incase you forget to latch it. ![]()

i have a Snap-on bottom box similar to the one in the first post, the middle box is a bit later maybe 70's. i also have a Snap-on top box that was designed to fit in the boot(trunk) of a Austin Mini, i don't use it anymore as it's a bit small as you can imagine. i'll get some pics tomorrow and post them up

I picked up a nice old tool box from an auction recently, but I don't know who made it. I'm sure you guys can help me out. The 2nd picture shows where it looks like the badge used to be, as well as the unique markings on the handles
Edit: Looks to have the same handle markings as the ones in Goldie's picture on the last page Last edited by fatrhino; 02-01-2009 at 09:20 PM. |

Nice yeah I used to buy my mooneyes and Mr.Hoorsepower shirts there back then. That was when Mike Corwin ran the counter. Wish TCR was still around but they were costly and we had quite a few speed shops back then Race Prep, Victory Circle, TCR.... Now I can only say to my knowledge Victory Circle is the only one and way to overpriced on parts. You guys sure turned out some nice sprint cars back then.-Weeks

Any suggestions for restoring (painting) a vintage (1940'-50's) craftsman roll-around.
Bottom roll around is ok but the top needs paint. I'm wondering if any one knows where to get the matching color paint. Thanks |

I traded my everlasting soul to the devil for this tool box, I wasn't using it no how. Really traded an old bow for it. Will make a great battery box in the 34. Think it is a router box. Don't know how old it might be.

Scored this 1965 Snap On box loaded with tools at the Crane Cams
liquidation last month.Pulled the drawers out and found old receipts from bike shops in Long Beach and stuff leading me to believe the original/previous owner worked for Holman-Moody. ![]() And here's the Rem Line I got for HS graduation in 78.

Here's an old Proto that I picked up at an estate sale over the weekend for $5.00!
It's pretty crusty and will probably stay that way, but it opens and closes pretty good. I love the tag! Can anyone tell how old it is? |

Here's a couple of pics of an old MAC tob chest I picked up at a garage sale last week. Yes, it was FULL of vintage MAC & Snap-On tools, as well as a Snap-On catalog from 1955 and a MAC catalog from 1960. There were also receipts for tools the original owner had bought dating from 1958 to 1965. One of the receipts showed he was making monthly paynebts to the MAC dealer......$15.00 per week !!

![]() ![]() ![]() Here are a couple of mine. I believe the Snap On is a K-55-R but I have no clue about the roller. It was a nice green and has a circle indented in the lower part of the cover. Very heavy but only 25" wide at the top. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks |

My wild guess would be Huot, manufactured in Minnesota. Been around since 1926. The U.P. of Michigan would be in the upper midwest region they sold the most in. That turqoise/sea-green color is relatively unique.
Here is an old Huot top box, pull handles appear to be a similar style to your bottom chest: ttp://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=516647 Last edited by TOOLHOUND!; 07-23-2009 at 10:33 AM. |

The color looked familiar and I dug up a little box I had as a child in the 50's. It also has the embossed circle but on the back. I wish I knew how to reproduce the color.
![]() ![]() Oh and I found a 1950 five dollar bill that fell behind the drawers of the little one. Must be a good day! |

Craftsman toolbox from 1968 my high school graduation present from the folks. It got a face lift last summer when I painted it to match my 1965 Barracuda. I had it at the last car show i was in and I was shocked at how many positive comments I got from the spectators! ( mostly the bored wives of the guys crawling under your car to check something out). funny.

Vintage tools and toolboxes are a weakness of mine. I've only been able to procure a few so far, but I plan on collecting many many more.
This one was a $3 item at a yard sale that I bought for my wife. She is very crafty and loves to sew and was complaining that she had nowhere to put anything. ![]() ![]() ![]() I had a friend pinstripe it, I padded and lined the insides with velvet, and she loved it. A friend knows how much I love tool boxes, so he bought this for me at a yardsale. ![]() ![]() This one came from my wife's great uncle who was a professional diesel mechanic. My guess is it's from the 60's but I could be wrong. ![]() ![]() ![]() And my favorite, complete with working vintage sander.

I gotta keep my eyes open for one like this with the two covered top trays for a sign kit. Keep your clean, oiled brushes on one side and your Stabilo pencils, chalk, charcoal sticks, X-Acto knives, etc. on the other side. The bottom looks deep enough to maybe even hold quarts of One-Shot or Ronans. Or does this thing also weigh 20 lbs empty!
That sander and box combo is the cat's banana!

Just finishing my 1965 Snap On KRA 500 series I picked up at the Crane Cams
auction.Found a bunch of receipts under the drawers identifying the original owner as a Holman Moody employee and googling his name comes back as an Olympic bicycle racing mechanic hall of famer. Other scraps of paper with addresses and phone #'s for different people,Bruce Eikelberger comes back as the first Funny car over 200 mph. Here's some of the lastest pics. ![]() ![]() ![]() and before...

Great to find some other guys that are in to old tools and boxes. I collect vintage Snap On, Craftsman and S-K. Here is a 40's vintage Snap On tool box that I refinished a few years ago, it belonged to an Pan American aircraft mechanic and came with a lot of vintage tools which had a special meaning because I am a aircraft mechanic as well. The Craftsman wall cabinet was made in the early 50's and this is the carpenters version, I have the mechancs one as well. I will get some other photos posted soon.

I've got a snapon tool box that I carry my tools in when I'm on the road. I bought it at a yardsale down the road from my moms house. It was new in 1953 The guy I got it from he bought it in 53 when he was working off shore in louisiana. He hand painted his phone number on it in 53 and its still there infact I just left it. I'll get pics of it and post it soon.

Can anybody give me an idea how old this Snap-On box is? I snapped a couple pics of the box and a closeup of the logo. I looked all over it, front, back, top, bottom & sides and there are no serial or model #'s to be found. Maybe it slipped out the factory without being stamped. It was left at the curb outside a big old house in a pile of junk awaiting pickup. The wife still can't understand how I could spot a toolbox in a pile of junk at 40 mph.

I would think mid-late 50's based on the logo/design, which are like mine from 1958...
the earlier ones from the 40's appear to have had a slanted logo plate.... compare the dimensions of yours to the listing here.... http://collectingsnapon.com/Site/ToolStorage-743.html and try to match it up.... nice find on yours. it looks to be a top section like I need to find for the bottom I just found! |

Here's mine. The lower box is pretty old I think....50s or 60s. The middle is 80s and top is 70s as far as I know.
![]() Here's my other one out in the garage. I just got this top box for $25.00 a few years back and he even had the key! The bottom is a cheap ass Craftsman.

I posted this on another thread, but I think it belongs here. Me and my husband have an old Snap On tool box that contains a ton of Snap On tools. We have no idea what year all the stuff is, but there are someone's paycheck stubs in side from the 1950's. The tool box looks really crappy, but we haven't even tried to clean it up yet. I don't have any pictures of the tools inside, but here's a few of the tool box.

Take some measurements, and then compare to the Snap-On tool boxes listed at this website:

I just finished this '70 rollaway for my boys. It was pretty beat up when I bought it on CL for $44 a month ago. It's still missing a locking cover for the lower drawers.

OHHH MY WIFE IS GOING TO BE MAD AT YOU GUYS!
I have been following this thread for a while and have been oogling these cool old tool boxes. I decided to put out a want ad for an old Snap On tool box. It took about 4 hours and this is what I got. It needs some work and is not as old as I would like but it will do. I will post photos again once it is fixed up. Hey mabey I should buy an old van to live in because I am dangorously close to being kicked out because of all of the "junk" that I have been dragging home.

Just picked up this old machinist's chest a couple days ago for $40 but can't find a single clue as to the brand. I'm guessing it's maybe from the 50's???
![]() ![]() I suspect it might be a Kennedy and I've seen pictures of a similar Craftsman box as well which I suppose could have been made for them by Kennedy. But it seems like most of them have a key type lock instead of the combo lock. This only really concerns me because I don't have the combination for the thing! ![]() ![]() Also, a coworker's Kennedy chest has what looks like plastic drawer pulls with a raised diamond shape molded on the face of them. Mine has metal pulls with smooth faces in case anybody knows just what the hell that means or if it helps to identify this chest. The side handles are also solid cast jobs and most Kennedys I've seen have heavy gauge stamped handles. But even though there's no brand name on it, one of my favorite little touches is this name tag holder on the front. ![]() I doubt that Dallas W. Zimmerman is with us any longer, but I'd sure like to ask him what the lock combination was! ![]() And this is my regular tool box pile-up. Kind of a "Frankenstien" affair, I'd call it. It's a newer Craftsman roll cab and a Ken Craft mid-box, but the top chest is a 60s vintage Kennedy that belonged to my late uncle. Thanks, Uncle Bud! ![]()

I got three new(old)tool boxes over the weekend;two machinists boxes and one S&K small tool box complete with a set of old Duro(or Indestro)sockets and an unusual 1/2"drive extension that doubles as a breaker bar. The Kennedy machinists box is quite old in that the top cover is square rather than rounded on the corners and the drawers are permanently attached rather than having the spring clips on the slides allowing removal. Also the name is on the inside of the lid rather than in the lower left corner of the lid.

Most of my dad's stuff was stolen years ago (Snap On from the 30s) but this is from another father figure - Jacques Couture was my boss and is still my friend. When he retired he gave this to me with tools inside. USAG was a sponsor of his at one point. They are from Italy and have that nice textured finish that allow for some good grip.
76 sticker is from the 90s when they sponsored the school and the Ferrari came with the box when he drove for them

C'mon Ryan are you holding out on us. You gotta have more tools then that I mean its kinda tough to fix those badass cars you own with just screwdrivers and a fish tape.

Been a while since I looked at this thread. WOW! Lots of cool tool boxes.
Here's a few pics of some more of mine. My 1st tool box. Got it in early 70's. Don't recall the brand. Was grey & I repainted it & even pinstriped it! I was only 8 or 9. Has a few cool old decals on it. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Old unknown box I picked up for $3.00. Love the patina.Just added the licks. ![]() Old Blue Streak wall cabinet. Found it in the trash! Should I leave it as is or restore it? Pinstripe it? Thanks,Brad |

Here's the tool box my older brother gave me when I dragged my first car (55 Chevy) home when I was 15. That was 39 years ago, and it was used then!

I have my grandpa's two craftsman rolling chests and his SnapOn 'road box' from when he was an "A and E" for Western Airlines, it even has a nameplate with his name and A&E license number riveted to the front. To me it's awesome to have since I'm now an A&P and get to use both his old and my new SnapOn boxes side by side.
The A and E was an 'Airframe and Engine' mechanic's rating from the FAA which is now called an A&P, 'Airframe and Powerplant' rating. ![]()

circa 1940's Britool Top box
exterior features an orange undercoat with brown crackle overcoat, twin chrome strips and twin badges (one featuring the name Bell - A Grade mechanic and the other the britool logo) lock mechanism is present and unscredrivered - however the handle (picture a clock winding key) and key for it are not present inside we have 7 red drawers on metal slides (which show no sign of wear - quality built for sure) with chrome handles. Each draw has its own ballbearing catch mechanism ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() comes on a dolly for easy transport

How's this:
I've had Dad's Snap-on Ferret TF-70N since he passed away in '72. Mom recently gave me a small box with a few odds and ends of Dad's including this matching Snap-on tie-clip! The real ratchet is less than 7" long, so you can see - in relation - how small the tie-clip is, yet perfectly detailed. The Ferret is from WWII and Dad bought it war surplus, Yet I've had it repaired free of charge twice.

In the 70's I worked at a Porsche/Audi dealer in Nashville Tn. The building was formerly a Lincoln Mecury dealer. each mechanic had a cabinet/bench like this. In the basement of the parts dept was a gasket board that had outlines of each gskt where it went on the board. I remember outlines of flathead intake & head gskts. I also think Megan has posted pics of a similar cabinet to the one shown above.

Well, I guess I will not get updated pictures of the last box that I posted. I horse traded it for this bigger box and now have a grand total of $80 into it. I am happy with it and my wife likes how little it cost. WIN WIN.

Does anyone have info on how to date the canadian boxes? they seem to have different model numbers from the boxes made in the states even though they look identical.

selohssa - Thanks for getting back to me on this. I think you are right about Canadian boxes having different model numbers. Attached are some photos of mine ... WHICH WOULD LOOK GREAT WITH THE ROLLER CABINET YOU JUST GOT RID OF!!! Anyway, the following is stamped on the back, left lower corner ...
Snap-on Tools KC 532 MADE IN CANADA I bought it used in 1969 when I was still in high school. The Snap-on dealer that I bought it from was great. He said he'd give me a deal on the next good trade in he got and this is it. I paid $75 for it and he even took my tiny Canadian Tire box in as a trade. I would'nt be surprised if he tossed it before he got home. Regarding the colour, I'm certain that it was repainted a darker red before I bought it. The drawers are matt black and I'm pretty sure that's original. There is no sign that they have been repainted. I plan to restore it and it will be a tough call - I'd prefer an all red box. If anyone has a matching roller cabinet they'd like to sell I'd be more than happy to speak with you. |

I think these is part of a Linclon masterlube Center. There is another cabinet that held 3 hose reels. 1 for grease, 1 for gear lube ,1 for air.

the coolest thing is what i found inside when giving it a tidy up, it had slipped behind the drawers and was stuck right in the back......this ticket was for the first ever drag race event held here in the Uk in 1964, when K.S pitman and George Montgomery shipped their gassers over to show us limeys whats what.

In about 1980, I took some car parts I was restoring into the Redi-Strip shop near where I lived in Mississauga, Ontario. Along one wall they had about 100 new Snap-on top boxes and roller cabinets with the same graphics on them as this one. They were stacked on pallets at least 5 or 6 boxes high. I was told that Snap-on was changing the graphics and they were all into be stripped so they could be repainted (and presumably rebadged). I went back about 2 weeks later for my parts and they were shipping out the stripped boxes. It was pretty neat to see and I was surprised Snap-on would go to that effort.

I am fortunate to have a bunch of 1937 tool books with prices and ilustrations
but unfortunate to have sold most of my old tool boxes, and really miss the little Snap On that i used for a pit box for stock car racing, just had a few parts and couple wrenches for minor adjustments, cleaned and painted it and it was real nice had it in the side box on the ramp truck

I have that same bottom box and I bought it used in 1961 for $25 with a few tools and a hein-warner floor jack. I never knew what year mine was but I'll call it a 1947,too. I don't think it has a serial # on it, but I'll look better when I paint it over. My wife is a 47 model and used to be a Ford.

I got this beautiful old Simonsen Metal Products (Chicago, IL) from the estate of my late father-in-law... and it was filled with vintage tools! Notice the home-made razor blade knife made from an old yardstick!
![]() ![]() A few years ago bought this Grip-Loc (Chicago, IL) box at a garage sale for $1.00...it also had some tools in it. ![]() ![]() My father-in-law passed last May... he had a very nice collection of woodworking tools... he kept all the hand saws and wood chisels razor sharp. I only found two tools that were imports... a "freebie" 1/4" drive socket set given as a premium from a local bank (Taiwan) and a 3/8" drive socket set (Japan)... everything else was US made with most tools being from the 30's to the 50's... |

My latest score:a vintage Kennedy machinist's tool box found at a local antique shop for $18.75.No dents;a small amount of surface rust;and a key inside that is still not working in the lock.

If you still have the Zimmerman tool box I sure would like to see what you would want for it.

I recently bought a Craftsman machinist's chest that was built by Kennedy, it's pretty similar to yours. I've been told mine dates from the early 1960s.

Got a great score on the Craftsman;it was paired with a Kennedy bottom cabinet(two drawers and a large lower space)that was missing the casters.Bought them at a church rummage sale for $5 for the pair!Even had keys with them.Cost me about $40 for casters but it was worth it.

Great Topic! And I thought I was weird to be so intrigued by old tool boxes and vintage tools. Either I'm normal or you're all just as goofy as I am. I just think it is neat to think of how many times the drawers have been open and closed and what interesting projects they had been used for. I have an old Remline 3 drawer top box that was my dad's that I will pass on to my son someday.

I know where there are a pair of old Lincoln shop stations similar the the 'tune up' cabinet/ bench combo unit posted by ChevygirlRox earlier in this thread. They are out of an old Jeep dealership in Freeport, IL so the owner tells me. They don't have the lighted 'tune up' sign but the look is real similar otherwise with the same emblems and some neat art deco type accents and trim. They are white, with red and blue trim. I have been trying to by these for a while but the guy never puts a price on them. They are buried in a garage with tons of other cool old cars and artifacts sure to make the members of this board salivate. Does anybody know of any information on old Lincoln shop equipment or does anybody else own something like this. I would really like to see more pictures of these.

Kiwi Kev, I think what you have here is a Lincoln shop station. I just posted a reply to a similar picture in a post from ChevygirlRox and then I saw this picture of your shop station. I know where there are 2 more of these units!!! The ones I know of have all of the emblems and trim like in your picture from the Nash dealership. DOES ANYONE HAVE MORE INFO ON THESE??? I know Linclon had a complete line of shop equipment in this era with workbenches and cabinets, etc. I would love to get my hands on an old catalog. It would be so cool to outfit an entire garage with this stuff. ANYBODY???!!

Does anyone know how I can tell the age of this Kennedy box I picked up tonight? The latch seems like an older style.
I also want to know what you guys think is a fair price for this box. I hope I didn't over pay. ![]() Thanks, David ![]() ![]()

You did all right;that is a very reasonable price for a box in that condition.

I bought these old MAC boxes used back in 1991. They were made in 1977. The guy that I bought them from was a cabinet maker, so they were not moved around or abused. I always liked this style.

This is one that I bought off of a retired mechanic because it was full of Snap-On tools. I didn't need the box but I can't say no to a good deal.

I got these tool boxes from my wifes grand father. The Craftsmen and Kennedy stack are pretty damn old, as is the Craftsmen cabinet. What about a "vintage" tool club, I have this Millermatic 35 that's 36 years old and still runs like a champ. I painted it and striped it because it was pretty beat up.

Can anyone ID this tool box for me? My Grandfather gave it to me years ago. He's no longer around to ask. I'd love to know as much as I can about it. It's full of amazing Herbrand, Snap-on, Proto, etc. tools.

Here is my German built tool box. It's called an "Assistent" and was built by Hazet. Hazet has been making tools since 1868. The cart is from the early 50's. The middle tray is suspended on chains attached to the top tray. The trays can be slid down for compact storage and to lock it.

Evening Kidz, just stumbled across this cool website yesterday while researching this roll-around box I picked up last week. I've thrown pics of it up on a couple different forums that I belong to, but no luck yet in i.d.'g it. So here goes, I'll let you rok starz try and figure out who made this thing.....
![]() (here's some specs on it---it weighs about 300 lbs. empty, it's about 28" deep x 46" wide, is a '3 sided' layout, has no badge, logo nor marks of any sort, the drawer slides only say 'Patent Pending', the casters are made by 'Faultless' and the exterior has been re-sprayed red again. Oh yeah, and I paid $50.00 for it...........) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I think that's a Snap-On box, and it's not really all that old. You don't see that many of them, I think the intended purpose was for maintenance guys working in factories, so you could carry a lot of tools, and have a nice work surface on the top. Having access to three sides to get to stuff isn't a big deal in that application because the box is always moving.
Nice find!

Looks like the same box my dad gave me. He bought his used back in the 1940's. Mine has green felt in the drawers and metal spring clips and dividers. The handle is leather.

Here's a toolbox my grandfather hand-made pre-WW2. He built things to last. I added the bad paint job and decals when I was a wacky teen-ager. Maybe I should try to restore it to its former glory.
He used to jack up the back wheel of his Model T and connect a belt from it to a saw for cutting firewood. (So I was told.)

I do not have a cool vintage tool box and this is my story of why not...
My Father was a mechanic and had his own service station from '55 till '66. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2390467/5 we moved to the big city and Dad passed away suddenly in '72. I remember the big tall and red box of drawers that disappeared after the official cleaning of the garage. I always assumed my oldest brother who was 23 at the time and had his own place ( I was 9 ) took it and ever since when ever I was in his garage would watch for it. Just last month I finally bought a bottom half tool box for the top half I had for years, my 83 year old Mom saw it in the back of the truck when I was giving her a ride and said "do you remember your Fathers?" She then tells me that during the official garage cleaning they had some "non-car people" ( Her term-I love my Mom ) help out. One of them removed all the tools from the tool box and piled them in cardboard boxes, He then wheeled the tool box out to the garbage cans in the back alley ![]() By the time the box was missed the next day it was long gone from the alley ( it wasn't garbage day, some one just got himself a free box ) Mr. Helper said I didn't think you would want it (!!) Ya - why would his 3 sons want a dirty old tool box - dick head! . At least I got some of his tools . |

just scored this mystery contraption yesterday.
![]() there are 10" fixed wheels on one end with rubber craftsman branded tires, and iron casters on the other. the corners are all rounded, and there's a "user added" hasp for the door. it will look much better cleaned up a bit with my 520 on top!

That box with the "eyeball" on the front. Who exactly made that box? I saw a couple different answers and wasn't sure which was right. I turned up empty handed on google using the names givin. Ever since going through this thread I have been drawn to that sucker. I need one! Any info would be killer. Thanks guys.

![]() I'm curious about all the linkage attaching the handle to the fold out trays to the main part of the box. When opened up, it looks like if you pick it up by the handle it will automatically fold up the trays to the closed position! Some pretty interesting "monkey motion" going on there.

I just got a really nice machinist's tool box the other day at an antique shop.Kind of unusual in that it is a wooden box with a sheet metal outside covering painted to simulate wood.Nice interior with green felt and oak drawers.Paid $75 for it but was worth every penny to me.

Thanks for the reply. If anyone knows of one for sale cheap, let me know
. I am just starting out striping and love that thing. I will definitely keep an eye out for one. That other box is killer too. I was checking out machinist's boxes on ebay also. They go for quite a bit. None nearly that cool.

I'll play too.... These two were my dad's. He bought them at Sears, sometime in the early 50's. He raced with them into the early 70's. They are one of those things that if my house was on fire, I would go in to get them. Seriously, they are that sentimental.

I'm new... just joined because of this thread. The collection of boxes shown here is stunning. I absolutely love this kind of stuff. My personal collection is small, both figuratively and literally, but I thought I'd show off this Kennedy box I bought off of craigslist yesterday for $5. It's not a pristine example, but it's tons cooler than any new hardware/tool store box. I'm thinking that I'll make it my kid's first tool box when he's ready. Anyway, here are some pics:
![]() BTW, anyone know how old this box is? The logo stylistically looks older than most Kennedys I've seen, so I'm curious. Thanks for letting me share in the sheer coolness of this thread. |

Not the best pics but here's my old snap on box. I'm not sure how old it is I'm thinking '40's at least. The colors are brighter than the pics show but it's pretty scratched I'm debating leaving it or restore it. I even have the key...

Two new additions to my vintage tool box collection.First is an S&K tool box I bought from an old friend at a swap meet for $7 full of tools. Some were good and the box is in great shape.Never saw one marked S&K.
The second one I bought this morning at a garage sale.No maker's name on it but is HEAVY gauge steel with a small removeable tray and has a bunch of Ford marked tools in it;some look like they are special. One open end is marked T 1917 and looks like a date rather than a model number. The box is reminiscent of the shape of a Model T hood.Cost:a whole five dollars!Sorry for the lousy pics;I'll try and get some better ones in the sunlight.

I just scored this 30's Lincoln Engineering cabinet. These were used in service station bays in dealerships and service stations. It is one of my all time favorite work bench designs. It is just like Kev's posted earlier in this thread.
This one is complete with all of the trim, but was stripped of the paint by the previous owner with the intent of restoring it. I will finish the job and bring it back to life. I would have prefered to have the original paint but to find one at all is pretty amazing.

That's not just a tool box, that's art!
Especially knowing all the history that goes along with it.The name tag on the top is a great touch. Reminds me of the similar tag on an old Kennedy chest I got several months ago.

He was a mechanic. He had a shop from '53 till he passed away in '76 called Summertime's Carbureter and Electric Service. His slogan was "Engines tuned like a fine violin"

http://www.flickr.com/photos/50984112@N04/4683611537/I know one guy has already posted something similar but mine is somewhat different. This is off course a Kennedy. Picked this guy up in nearby Canton,Tx. This is how it differs from the other guy's box: Mine doesn't have the diamond shapes on the drawer pegs, the Kennedy signature is in the middle of the underside of the lid and the model number is on the top inside of the front cover. Any ideas on the age. The previous one was thought to be of the 50's. Someone please grace me with some knowledge.

For as popular as these old Kennedy chests were, and are, there doesn't seem to be a lot of info out there on dating them. There seems to be a lot of variations in detail on them (handles, latches, lock types, hasps, drawer pulls, logo placement, etc.) but it doesn't appear that anyones sorted out what they all mean. With the sqare cornered lid, as opposed to the later rounded corners, I'd guess yours to be closer to 40s vintage rather than 50s. Maybe even older?

Way cool thread guys, love some of the stuff turning up here....my wish list just grew ten fold!! HAHA
This is a really cool number I found in a back garage at my grandma-in-law's place in. It belonged to my grandpa-in-law but doesn't have his name on it so i'm guessing maybe he bought it somewhere or got it from someone. All the drawers are felt lined, the rollers are gorgeous bearing types and it is as solid as a rock and as precise as anything. I couldnt find any markings or identifying features on it, anyone have any idea??? hopefully one day i get to look after it :-) ![]() ![]() Anyone have any idea as to it's maker/model number????

Got this in February, I've been looking for years for one of these, I think it's a Blackhawk, it's missing its wheels and axles. i plan on leaving it just as it is and getting some old wheels.

I like the old red drawer Craftsmans. Mine are from 69 or 70. Plus the Power Kraft bottom from 1970. Would love to find a top box for it.

When I came across this thread ,it made me remember a toolbox that I had in storage . This box was given to me by my brother in 63-64 ,the tools in it are from my grand father and from my brother, the box I think is late 50s....maybe early 60's. There was a mostly full set of Ford wrench's in the box,I left it home when I went in the Navy in 65 when I got the box back in 1970 all of the Ford tools except what you see in the pic's was gone. Reilly pissed me off as this was the only things that I ever got from my grand father,I know that my drug addict nephew got them, could not prove it but....he got his due died of a overdose in 76.
The Craftsman drill and the silver Yankee style driver are unusual and I have not been able to find any info on either one. The drill has that unusual collar behind the chuck ......? And the driver has single fluted drill bits stowed in the handle.....? My brother was a telephone repair man and I was told that phone men of that time had push drills like this at that time (late 50's early 60's).....anyone have any idea's about this two? Kenny

Not sure if I posted this before but here goes:
Bought at a yard sale about a week ago full of old Ford script tools and others.Super heavy gauge steel and it sort of looks like a Model T Ford hood.Five dollars for everything.Still don't know if I'm going to re-finish it or leave as is.

My latest find is this Kennedy. I was t_h_i_s close to buying a similar Craftsman that was missing the front door. While I was thinking about how I was going to make that one work I saw this. Is has better slides, the door, and is even built a bit heavier. It is just missing the front lock, which is OK because most guys have lost the keys anyhow. Not sure when to find a new lock.
This might finally be nice enough to have a professional lay some nice stripes on it. |

![]() If you're ever going thru the Van Wert, Ohio area it might be worth stopping by. Assuming that it's still in the same place it was a neat old factory building and they did have a small museum area and showroom. Don't know if they ever offer any kind of tours though.

I just picked up a vintage Craftsman tool box from a lady moving some stuff to a garage sale. She had a fridge, air compressor and this tool box to move to a garage sale she was having. I seen it and took a liking to it and she said I could have it for moving the stuff for her so not a bad deal for FREE!! Its deffinetly showing its age but all in all still in great shape!

keeping the thread alive, following up to my previous post...
after some exhaustive research and a few emails to the awesome people at graco, i have identified the "mystery box" as a 1948 graco porto-bench. ![]() i'm in the middle of restoring it now - probably not to exacting originality but much better than i got it, anyway.

I used to have an old Snap-On top box that my Dad gave me when I went off to college. I didn't have any tools of my own (and why....because I lived at home and had every tool imaginable). It was probably '60's era. Eventually my tools outgrew the little top box and he traded me a roller and a big top box for it. He's still got the old box at home.

This one might be a little off topic. My great grandfather was a carpenter around the turn of the century. This was his work box he made himself...

I picked this up at a garage sale today. It belonged to the ladies dad who died awhile back and i scored it with the tools in it for $40. From what i can tell it looks like in that little circle area it says Huot. I think its amazing that the cover was still intact, and the paint had been protected. It appears to have been repainted red because i see drips. But i was wondering if anyone has any info on this brand, what they looked like new? Era? I can see huot but its not embossed in the metal so im assuming there is a decal underneath. Anyways, heres the pics and im not trying to be a photowhore

I just got this one. It is a Lincoln Engineering service center with all of the trim. Of course it needs to be completely re-finished but it is nice and straight.
When I get around to doing the resto I will post up some shots. ![]()

Here's a box my best friends grandfather made me when I was about 8yrs old. I had one that my grandfather made but it was stolen,so he made me a replacement. I used it for a model box,and still do,when I have the time.

That's a bit of an odd duck, isn't it?
Don't think I've ever seen one quite like it before. Looks to be a machinist's chest more than a mechanic's box. Wonder how long they made them since it seems that Kennedy has pretty much owned that business since, like, forever. ![]() Little more "streamlined" looking than the Kennedy stuff, too. Nice find, especially for the price!

I have a pretty cool Kennedy toolbox that dates back to the late 40's. It belonged to my grandad and it's also the name of my daughter.

Here's my newest one:No maker's name but it looks to be from the 1930's.Made of wood covered with fake leather and reinforced nickel plated corners.Inside is a four tier(two per side)shelf system with dividers and the whole thing lifts out. When I found it it was filled with fishing lures but I don't think that was it's original function. In excellent condition and reasonably priced($35).Will be my new travel box.

Delco Tool Box - Pre 1970's
My Grandfather used to have this in his shop. He kept all his electrical and tune up stuff in it. It's got real cool Logo Handles on it. Two Drawers inside and a large storage area on top of the drawers and in the doors. I didn't want to ruin it by trying to repaint it. It has mounting holes on top and on the back for mounting on wall or under a cabinet. Or it can just go on top of your roll away. |

My latest garage sale find - MAC 16-drawer cart full of MAC & S-K tools, as well as twelve good pneumatic tools, majority of 'em MAC. Not too shabby for $500 and free delivery to my shop.

This reminds me of the early TV repair mans kit when they came to your house to fix the TV. (That sure tells my age.) Lots of tubes in the trays with the meters and tools in the lower part.

Could be Tommy but it is much smaller than a tube kit.The bottom will only hold 12 1/4 pint cans(only one row high)and the divisions in the trays were small as well;maybe 1 1/2" wide by 5"deep.Nevertheless it is a nice little box to use for a travel kit.

Badger, this is the winner for me, never do a thing to this box, never clean it or anything. I can't tell what type of wood she is, possibly a subspecies of a Birch or hard Maple, that box is absolutely gorgeous. The pulls on it are extremely hard to locate, they re pop them but it just is not the same.
I built a box very similar to this for a guy about 10 years ago using a rift cut Sycamore, she had waxed guides, brass handles, Maple drawer bottoms, and iron caster feet. I lined the drawer bottoms with Doe skin. I hand dove tailed all of the drawers. I had about 150 hours into it, it took me about 30 hours ad 6 months of aging technique to achieve the patina that yours has. I sold that box for $3000.00, it was commissioned by a gentleman who collected antique bronze micro meters. Cherish yours it's real. Here is something to consider for some of you guys who are ashes to ashes and dust to dust and not going to be laid to rest in the earth, I have what is called a forever box that I made. It's a tool box / memory box that I made from special woods. Black walnut from the playboy mansion, some Ebony that is 100 years old, some Rosewood reclaimed from the home of a British Governor in imperial India, circa 1850, a very small and precious piece of Lebanese Redwood about 100 years old. I made this small custom toolbox for all of the future generations to hold all my cool little items, I still need a few more special bits to facet the thing in a classy way, I'll show you when it's complete. Not many of us think of this, I never really realized the significance till I saw a loved ones box, I wish I had known, I would have made something special. |

This box just needs some plain, white block lettering on the side that says "BOMB SQUAD".

Very wierd; I just found the exact same box and I paid $35 for mine too. I have a large collection of pre-war Gerstner machinist boxes and these little things are on par with them in terms of how well made they are.
Hey, on another note; I still want those ACME suitcases and toolboxes. Send me a PM and let me know if you have them still. John Quote:

I cannot seem to stop finding these little gems.I know it's an addiction but I can stop ANYTIME!Yeah Sure!
Anyway I had to drive to a guy's house today to add some more lettering to his race car and stripe his wife's new Hyundai. After that as I was only a couple of miles from my favorite antique shop I decided to take a run over. Unfortunately they had nothing new but as I was leaving I noticed a place across the street that is very rarely open had it's lights on. Took a stroll over to check things out and find an old Craftsman tool box that looked to be in pretty good shape.Open it up to check out the inside and it is full of tools!Do a quick inventory and they are all vintage Craftsman(with a logo I'm not familiar with)except for a couple pieces. Tried to haggle the price but the woman wouldn't budge(hadn't been out long enough)so I paid what she was asking. Got it home and did some cleaning and inventory.Craftsman H sockets ranging from 7/32(quarter inch drive)all the way to 1 1/8(half inch drive);2 ratchets(3/8 and 1/2 inch drive);2 speed handles(3/8 and 1/2 inch drive)3 breaker bars(1/4,3/8,and 1/2);3 T handles;6 extensions(2 each of 1/4,3/8/and 1/2);an early Snap-On 3/8 universal;and some miscellaneous newer sockets. The only bad socket was a cracked 15/16;the rest were near new. The box is in excellent shape with a lot of it's original brown wrinkle paint still intact and no dents. After some research I determined that this stamping was used by Craftsman starting in 1934 and running til about 1947.A great set and a great price($60 plus tax). Here are some pictures.

If I get those this box will be awsome. I plan on restoring it the winter, just dont know what color I will paint it. Ill post some pics up in the next couple of days.

Sorry, that was just too easy to pass up and the funniest thing I've read so far this morning. ![]() The Craftsman logo on the tools themselves is a new one on me. But the nameplate on the toolbox I've seen before and that one's in great condition. That style of plate always looks good on their old drill presses and circular saws too.

I have a old tool wiring caddy I got about 25 years ago when I bought some stuff from a old radio shop. I worked on radios at the time. Its in great condition and looks worse than it really is in the photos. Most of the stuff that looks like rust is actually dirt and grease. It was a Packard wiring caddy. I used it some but put it up because it is so old now. I have never seen another around.

.Doing some research I found that the logo(a large C underlining the rest of the name)was first used in 1934 and phased out around 1947.Prior to that the logo was strictly block letters. The logo then went back to the block letters but was surrounded by two horizontal lines on either side(much like an = sign)and that eventually incorporated the V between the logo and Made in USA.It was generally conceded that Craftsman tools were made by New Britian Tool Co.in Connecticut. There are pictures on the site of comparison tools from NB and they are virtually identical. I don't recall the name of the site but I've used it before to date old Duro and Indestro tools.Great info there.EDIT:The site is called,"Alloy Artifacts" As for that Packard kit;Packard was a highly used maker of ignition wires in the 50's and before.Everyone wanted to use Packard 440 wires for ignition cables as they were considered the best.I don't know if they had any affiliation with the Packard Motor Car Co.but the logo sure looks the same.A very nice and rare piece by the way.

This might not be the most practical tool box, but it does have some early '60s Chevrolet promotional and family history, so I think it probably qualifies. I wrote a whole thing about the box and the lousy old tools in it here if you care to see.
