The Green Mamba was at the event that set me on the path I walk today--Great Lakes Drag-o-Way, 1979. I was 8 years old. I'll never forget announcer hyping the car..."The Green Mamba!!! The deadliest snake in the world!"
Bill Golden was also there doing wheel stands with metal plates on his wheelie bars, throwing sparks.
I met my uncle for the first time that day, too--he was running a Fuel rail with a blown and injected 392 in it. He would later tell me "It's been my experience that if you're upside down and backwards going 80 or 180 miles an hour, it's all about the same."
I remember standing at the fence, much closer to the starting line than you can get as a spectator today, with my fingers grabbing it, being totally deaf, feeling the ground shake under my feet and my lungs vibrating in my chest, thinking "This is the neatest thing in the world!" as the cars were staging.
My mom has told me "After that day, you were never the same." And it's true.

And now these fucking bastards have cut up a piece of it! FUCK! Those fucking scumbags need to have everything they own broken and destroyed, a brand on their forehead that says "THEIF," and then be deposited in the heart of a strange city with no money, no ID, 10 broken fingers so they can't dial a phone to call friends to come get them, and wire their shit-talking trap shut so they can't ask for help.

Don't kill them...just fix it so they can think for a good long time about what they've done to one man's livelihood.

Brad

I hope they can rebuild after those ass-holes ruined everything.

They found the engine today at a local scrapyard. He had a spare, but has the original back now. He said he would rebuild it....

we have a problem here in Dallas with these scrap metal junkies that sneak around in these pile of shit trucks. They pull up to new housing developments or construction sites and steal the a/c systems along with the wiring and pipes to cash in for their copper content. This would mostly stop if the places that buy scrap would start holding this stuff for a couple of days just to make sure it wasn't reported stolen. Its seems fishy to me when a scumbag pulls up in a fifty dollar truck and has three to four thousand dollars worth of new a/c compressors and thousands of dollars in new copper pipe for scrap..

They were probably in it for the trailer. Someone here swiped a trailer from Gasoline Alley and opened it to find an Indy car. They must have figured they had bitten offf more than they could chew and abandoned the trailer and car on the other side of town I think, undamaged.

I'll put money on it being a bunch of druggies. They heard "jet engine", and probably saw dollar signs in their eyes. They really really need to start regulating scrap yards.

Can you imagine how sick he must've felt upon seeing his labor of love hacked into pieces? I hope Karma works really fast for these guys who stole it.

we basicly have the same problem here in the St Louis area, hell they're stealing the copper off the roof's of churches. what St Louis City is think of doing is making all the scrap dealers take a picture of the license of the person & the license plate on the car/truck that brings it in along w/a picture of what they sold for scrap.

my question to the scrap dealer is, "now where in the world does a guy find a JET ENGINE to scrap", seem to me i would of had the cops there when i seen that because it's not like they don't get those everyday.....joe

a buddy here who owns a sports car shop had a storage trailer broke into by a druggy. this asswipe stole thousands of dollars worth of vintage speed equipment, carb sets, trannys etc. basicly anything made out of aluminum.
smashed it up and sold it for scrap. the cops caught him but he was kicked loose by the court because they didn't want to mess with a homeless drug addict.

I work at a school & they've been clipping the copper leads off of the numerous welding machines we have.We had to make small boxes that attatch to the machines so we can roll the cables up inside & lock them.
Assholes.

You know, I read that he was storing it in the parking lot of his apartment complex? You'd think he would have picked a little more of a secure place to store it. I think anyone who lives around here knows that when in comes to these local apartment complexes, they'll steal anything that isn't chained down. I'm amazed that as important as this car was to him, he left it in such an unsecure location.

Damn, I'm glad he got it back, and I hope he gets all the help and support he needs to put it back together.

This is one of those cars I haven't thought about in years, but I remember seeing him on TV with it when I was a kid. During an interview he stuck a knive in his leg (because they're artificial) and I thought he was a real bad ass! LOL

I was thinking that too, but read that the car is his only source of income... maybe he's not doing so great money wise? I'm glad he got most of the car back.
