To be honest the weather has made a turn for the better lately so I've just been driving the ass off the A. Very little work has been done. It's been good though, enjoying the fruits of my winter labours.

Got to go out in a friend's fresh out chopped '29 Sport Coupe though, running a Jay Steel-built banger. Superb car, though it's up to him to post any pics.

weeellll...i ordered some valves for my banger, switched to a v-8 water pump, sent a buttload of aluminum goods out to get polished including my head (f*#k yeah! finally some eye candy!),and started making a lakes-type header/log intake out of my old torque tube.that will then go out to chrome, and next week ALL of my chassis parts are getting sandblasted where upon i will slather them with gloss black enamel.

  5. Been a real busy month of change for me.

The first was the purchase of that roadster that I have always wanted. A Connecticut car that is allegedly an old Hot Rod.

    See the thread here.

    http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=106429

Time will tell on that one.

Then there was the major disappointment of finding a large piece of my block broken and making its way around the flywheel housing.

    http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=105860

After all that I've decided to just carry on running it.

Progress is now becoming rapid, maybe I might make it to Faffing, eh Phil!

One of the ring gear bolts broke on my 31 coupe.

All the other bolts on the ring were very loose.

It chipped a pinion tooth and mashed part of the broken bolt into the teeth on the ring. I'm OK with it breaking. I have been driving it 10 years and have never been in the rear axle. Now I will KNOW whats in there. While the rear axle is out, I will shorten the torque tube and driveshaft and install a 1987 F-150 fully synchronised overdrive transmission. The rear axle will get hydraulic brakes and tube shocks. One of the HAMBers used 42-48 backing plates with 71-76 chevy wagon 12" brakes. I am going to do this and have self energizing, self adjusting brakes! After 10 years of dragging my feet to slow down, the idea of good brakles is pretty exciting. I have started working on assembling another front axle assembly, using a dropped axle, 39 Lincoln brakes, and tube shock absorbers. I am thinking of using Torrington bearings on my front spindle kingpins, stealing the idea from Stainless Steel Brake Corporation. They want $250 for their kit. I can do it for the cost of the Torrington bearings and machining the kingpins. All this will make this car drivable anywhere, anytime. This car has been all original but with the new babbitt and new bore, I used a 7 to 1 Lion Speed Head and a New Model B cam.. It runs a lot better now. Ron Kelleys dyno tests suggest that the A engine will benefit with better breathing, so I plan to make a stainless steel header with intake to accept SU carburetors. I have a set of big and little wide whitewall 17" wheels for it too. Yeehaaaa!

I suspect the only 'banger I'll be working on this month is the 1.9L in my '93 Escort. :(

I think I split the ring gear in two in my '12 T. Time to rip the rear axle out and explore Model T technology!

nothing much on the banger- I've taken it off the street for now in lieu of our bucket. I just couldn't wring enough power out of it without the stromberg and header, but I can't put the header in because it hits my front wishbone cause the front is so low :( I'd hate to tear it up trying to make it fast. Will soon undergo a body off- and the entire chassis will go under a custom A Sedan creation we're working on, something a little lighter and fenderless. Then I can put on the lightened flywheel easier, and then throw on the carb/header/ high comp head and she'll be complete. The coupe will get a new chassis and more modern running gear.

  14. Lets hope so - you've already paid...
    Four banger stuff?
Made a dashboard for the tourer from a piece of a LHD dash, and a RHD Tudor dash. Lots of dot to dot welding to stop her warping.

Apart from that - messing around changing diffs on the 100E so that doesn't count.
Oh, spent Friday helping unload a 40' container full of Model T's and spares, picked up the interior for my tourer and some bits to make the engine mounts for putting the A engine in the T frame.

  15. Is the 'T' scene big enough over here to support all that stock?

Monkeybiker, It that container load of T parts from Don Lang?

  22. Think they're from all over, packed and shipped out of Model T Haven for Neil Tuckett, who is first port of call for all T stuff over here. Apart from the owners club obviously, gotta support your owners club. Lots of it was Hershey purchases by club members last year.
My interior parts were RIGHT at the back, 40' in last things out except a tractor...
It was basically all hands on deck to pass, slide and shove everything out. The cars had been stuffed full of oddments, even bodies had parts stuffed under the seats.
Couple of lads were re-assembling a 1910 tourer as it was handed to them piece by piece!

I've sold stuff to guys in Australia that must have the same setup, pack a container and save on shipping. It would be good to know who has these setups so everyone could get a better deal on transportation. :) :)

  24. Heres a weird one.

I've got this built 'B' engine that came out of the roadster. Its a normal 'B' with a 'C' crank.

It has this odd mount on the drivers side. As you will hopefully see from the photos it is cast as part of the block. Its not welded or a patch. It was a perfectly smooth surface with two threaded holes that go right through into the crank case.
The two cap head bolts have been put in by the previous owner to plug the holes.

Any ideas? I'm thinking industrial? Governor mount?

Is early block with provision for vacuum assisted clutch, a '32 option that apparently almost made production--it was also the reason for the funny dent in the bottom edge of some firewalls. That engine should also have a huge plugged vac opening in the intake manifold--maybe '38 pipe necked down to I8 for the wiper hookup. Bizarre, eh?

Has that B engine got inserts fitted, Clark?

  27. Wow Bruce that was quick!

I know exactly what you mean with the vacuum assisted clutch. I remember reading about them in the Tony Thacker book.
I didn't think they ever made it to production? Would it be a late '31 production?

Whats the chances of collecting all the vacuum stuff to put it all back on!

Totally rebuild to stock and never run. 'B' block, 'C' crank, 40 thou over, stock 'B' flywheel and clutch.
Riley pulley, Yapp water inlet, V8 water pump conversion, winfield head and side cover.
Unknown cam, allegedly Isky. Differently high lift and used.

There was a lengthy article on this stuff in V8 Times by Cole--I think he had some murky prototype pics, but I don't think anything made it to production. A mechanical brake power cylinder might be a start...run down to the scrapyard and check out the thirties Lincolns! There were also accessory systems sold, all of course wildly scarce...
I would think this engine would be early '32 or late '31?? If I remember correctly, B engine production started very early on, but HF would not allow them to be put into cars until V8's were available, so a very large number of B engines was stockpiled before production started in...April I think??
This also muddies up and dating of B cars, since it is unlikely the stockpiled engines came out of the back of the warehous in any sort of order. Is this engine associated with a chassis or bellhousing with a number??

  29. Just had a read up and it said they never went into production.

The 'B' prototypes were runnning around in late '31 with looks like a 'B' engine though it could have been a re-dressed 'A'.

I'll try and get the engine number tomorrow if its readable.

  30. Whilst I've been pondering some engine mounts - something altogether more exciting has been happening down the road.
Like to guess what these are....?
