If any of you know CycloneKevin (Kevin Preciado) the following will come as no surprise.
I have been promising Kevin these Cyclone vs. Edmunds comparo shots for some time. Unfortunately, my old digi decided to commit suicide by jumping out of my truck when I opened the door a while back. I count myself as a lucky guy by having slightly gotten to know Kevin over the past 1.5 years via emails, PM's and phone conversations. He is a HERO, LIVING LEGEND, modest, knowledgable guy. Kevin, ya blushing yet? Which brings me to this point, I was looking for speed parts for the old, odd, rare badass Cadillac Flathead. Well as you may know that stuff is rare and bordering on being made of unobtainium. Well in lots of conversation with Kevin a long time ago, and being assured some things I took the leap and bought an engine for a build I'm collecting parts for. I then saved and ordered a set of Kevins "Cyclone" heads. All the while looking for an old dual carb intake. Well as luck would have it, when it rains it pours (more like pours out of my now broken wallet), I have some Edmunds heads to compare to the Cyclones. You will be viewing a comparison of a set of later design heads by Edmunds which are 50+ years old. As well as set #001 of 3 that Kevin recently reincarnated from the old Cooks Machine Cyclone molds. In my mind there is zero comparison and I will let the pictures do the talking. |

If anyone is interested in tricking out there Caddy, please hit up Kevin. I know he is considering doing a run of 10 set of heads if he can get the preorders/support.
As well as its my understanding he is getting really close to cutting a deal to cast up dual intakes using the Burrell design. These are the real deal, Kevin machines each one by himself sweating and laboring at his Bridgeport. If you have any questions about the differences in the comparison hit me up. If this sounds like a sales pitch it kinda is. I really want Kevin to do some intakes!!!!! |

The difference in the thickness of the casting is really interesting. Edmunds has taller fins, but the fins on flatheads really don't help cooling very much (if at all), so I'd definitely want the thicker Cyclone's which should keep the engine temperature more constant with the greater amount of metal. Out of curiosity, what are the dimensions on those Caddy heads anyway? Just trying to figure how much polishing they would need...

On the fins maybe the distance between the fins decieves the eyes, or the pics just make them both look ubbersmall. The Cyclones are 1/2 inch and the Edmunds are only 9/16ths. So very similiar, except the Edmunds does have substantially more of them. |

And just for $'s comparison in 1948 Edmunds sold Cadillac Flathead intakes for $57.50, and *Custom Hi-Speed Heads* for $69.50 pair. For Fords, V8 85, 90, 100's were $39.75, and heads were $59.50 unless it was the V8 60 which were $49.50 Hum.. inflation? |

Wow.... did you watch that auction? Along with the heads the guy sold? hahaha... I told a guy to shove it where it don't shine b/c he said he wanted $1,100 for a pair of Edmunds heads 2 yrs ago. Maybe I should call him back. lol

Ya gotta know my wife isn't a car person, but I'm trying to convert her. When she heard me talking about that auction on the phone, she went on a rampage about me selling my "shit"! Ohhhh no! I'm a parts collector baby!

Thanx Wyatt!
I'm all choked up up over this . This is long hard road, so hard that I can't even finish the companies car. I would like everone to know here that Wyatt came to me as a regular customer, I had only cast up 3 sets of these heads for my own use, which I wanted to put on a roadster of some kind that I could use both for fun & advertising. Geoff from The Rodders Journal wanted to do a shoot for TRJ #26 with the quickie & had me bring up the other parts as well, He had seen & heard about the Caddy head & wanted to include that. I wasn't ready to put that one back out yet, I really only made em for myself. Well thanks to that article & Ryan's HAMB, there is alot of interest in this ol tank eng . This tooling was quite well preserved & I remember the 1st time that I saw it .Cook literally felt that the day of the flathead was dead with the introduction of OHV's so he focussed on eng/trans adapters & driveline work. He did keep most of his tooling around though, some got lent out & never returned by people who said that they just wanted to make a couple of sets of heads, some went to the building that is no longer next to Cooks as a result of a fire some got destroyed. I am glad that I have looked after this Cad pattern and obtained the original & only "cast in plate" Ford V8 Cyclone V8 intake patterns as well as many others. I want people to have a choice in the availability of aftermarket speed equip & I know that we are a lil pricey for some, but if one only knew what I go through every step of the way, one would realize that "this has to be a passion, not a money maker". Take Eric Vaughn for instance, he hates dealing with foundries, so much so that he sold his wheel business so he wouldn't have to anymore. Wyatt is a stand up guy who is both very trusting & patient as I was afraid to ruin those heads by cutting something wrong, so I really had to think about how to go about it. Everything worked out fine though & I hope that with the 1O pairs that are waiting to be picked up from the foundry, I 'll have 10 more satisfied customers. Then I can move on onto the next run. As for the intake, I am awaiting a decission from Mr Burrell re: my assistance in making that design available again, I can tell you that he is indeed working on it. I too would like to see Cyclone produce one of our own, so lets see what the interest is guys . Let me know ok. Sincerely, Kevin Quote:

I know where one of these Caddy's is with a complete engine and driveline.
How much is a motor like one of these worth? I mean what is a reasonable amount and what is getting too high? I don't know anything about the condition of the car. |

Maybe I should have done a set of more, up close and personals (pre-polish, post-polish), LOL WOW I guess I didn't realize the TRJ aspect of this whole deal. Kevin, I know you're famous, but does that make me like a relative of famous???? Honestly fellas, I am in love with quality things. Cyclone, i.e. Kevin Precaido is 100% in your face quality, traditional, standup. I love the heads I got from him, I can not wait until the day I unveil my '40 Chevy Pickup running this engine with these blazing the way! If this whole shebang lookS like a brown nosing venture you need refer to post #1 to see the quality that Cyclone is. IDS EDIT: Looks like of all the fatfingering I left off a strategic letter that totally changed the meaning of the post. LOL Last edited by InDaShop; 03-23-2006 at 06:53 AM. |
