Right on! I think someone was saying on here not too long ago that someone needs to start a trad. lowrider mag. Moves, can you scan a pic of the cover? Not that the cover tells you anything, but I would be interested in seeing it as I'm sure others would too.

Wait, I see it now on the website when you click on subscribe. Is it monthly? Someone said it was quality like TRJ, if so I'm guessing the $35 is quarterly and the quality is high.

There is a couple cars with 13's...I can live with that .....but, there is a section on blast from the past.....old photos and such.......I'm diggin it...I wonder if they need contributors or articles and tech stuff??

I grew up in the 70's and 80's....I'm all about the traditional lowrider/ custom movement...........I'm particularly fed up with where lowriding has gone lately....seems like it's about how much you can spend....and not enough about the lifestyle and expressing yourself.......

well to anwser one question, it is a monthly publacation.and they are always lookin for good contributors. The whole reason i got interested in traditional hotrods was because mags like lowrider magazine got so far away from my root interest in the lowrider lifestyle that i went in search for somthing more true to its start.I will allways be a lowrider and magazines like TLM make it easer for me to fall back into that.

Yes and no. There's an undeniable cultural aspect behind traditional lowriders relative to time and place. They takes their ques from early customs, but lowriders are and were different animals. Not that you asked for a history lesson...but whatever.

Lowriders were born from "Customs"...

In fact some of the Veteranos still call the older body style Lowriders, "Customs"...

So my point is...

How do you define the word "Traditional?"

It's the same question I have about the HAMB from time to time.

What the average person calls a "Traditional Lowrider" today is a straight-up product of the late 60's to mid 70's. Which in turn were an evolution of pure "Customs" built in the 50's etc...

Ever notice all the Latin names of the owners of the famous customs that we all adore... "Matranga, Lopez, etc..."

They were the fathers of "Lowrider Culture"...

Along with the black kids and the white-trash kids that built "customs" "Back in the Day"...

I get what you're saying and totally agree with you. Terms/words/phrases evolve just like cars and styles do. I guess if you really want to get technical, lowriding started way before all the customizing of the fifties, with the Pachucos of the 40's. My grandpa claims to have been lowriding before Watson got his driver's license.

On the subject of the magazine, I picked up a couple copies yesterday. It's decent. There's a cool glossary of lowrider terms from the late 60's/early 70's. Many of the photos are no different than anything found in Lowrider. I really like it though.

A Pachuco is the term for a lattin gang member from the 40's...

And the term "Lowrider" wasn't around back then...

Pachucos may have been riding around in Lowered cars but they weren't "Lowriders"...

And Bertollucci and Westergard were Customizing before Winfield could drive too but they definately considered themselves "Customizers" or simply body men...

My Great Uncles were Pachucos and rode around in "Customs" in the 40s...

If they all rode around in a group, they were just Pachucos though...

Their Grand Kids were "Lowriders"

Sorry if this strays a little OT, but is Street Low Magazine any good?

This thread had me searching for other low rider mags on the 'net and that one came up. Ther website shows mostly older model vehicles from what I can see.

I am now on a search to see if any stores near me carry Traditional Lowriding Mag (or Street Low if it's any good). Thanks for the heads up.

They've been talking about it coming out on layitlow for quite some time now... looks like an okay mag from what I saw on there, but still a lot of the 13" Daytons... that one cover looks like a late-model Caddy maybe??

Like someone said before, most of it seems to be what you'd see in LRM as features... Traditional? All in the definition...

Ahhh, the beauty of language... shit, to me my old bigwheel was "traditional"... trad early-80s-style taildragger!

Maybe they'd be interested in an article on the Los Boulevardos... just a thought...

I got it.. liked it.. thought I'd see some features on cars with supremes, tru spokes, star wires and maybe even cragers. If you guys want to see some old school lowriding.. look for the movie Heartbreaker... lame story... but really coool cruising scenes.

p.s. Anybody ever run Apliance wheels? My brother just got some 14's w/tiny tires.

What exactly constitutes a "glasshouse"???

Is it basically a 75-76 caprice/impala with the landau option and/or large rear 1/4 windows?

what's up ken? hope you've picked up a copy of the magazine. i introduced myself on the board many months back, but ill reintroduce myself. My name is Eric, and I'm the managing editor for Traditional Lowriding Magazine. I am also glad to see people talking about the magazine on here and giving feed back. I'm an avid fan of all cars and an avid reader of custom automobile history. I'm also a a builder of custom cars myself, lowriders/"low rod"/hot rod. Everyone who contributes to the magazine builds custom vehicles for themselves. One of the publisher even paints rods/customs/low riders at the shop he owns with his brother-in-law. Hopefully everyone can see the "love" we have for cars; and subsequently set us apart from other publications. Between us, we know and have come to know a lot of people. Not just in Low Riding, but in all facets of customization. We are slowly trying to educate others about car customization, quality standards and the history of these people/cars. We have lots of people ready to help us, just takes a lot of work and time. Most of us enjoy cragers, tru spoke classics, and supremes; problem is most like the original thing. Hard to come by, but some guys out there still have them on cars they've had garaged for YEARS. We will not exclude these types of cars. One of my jobs, is interviewing individuals and writing the grass roots/throw back pieces on the individuals. We hope this feature will give people more insight on those who have contributed to the custom car culture.

Sex Pistol, Star Car, The Elvis Car, Twilight Zone, Dressed to Kill, Las Vegas are just a few cars that are legendary in low riding. There are an equal amount of cars with other styling that are just as legendary. In time we hope we can expand people's acceptance to low riding, hot rodding and the combination of both. Some of the new cars are getting blending together, and i myself enjoy it. Our second issue has a car that shows this.

Enough rambling from me, look forward to your responses and questions.

we just finished our 3rd issue. hard to find out what stores have them. the problem is our distributor sells to other distributors. people have found them at: Rite Aid, Wal Greens, Target, Vons, Start Bros, 7-11. Hastings has them as well.

My alltime favorite is the '64 Chevy Gypsy Rose. I wish pics were available. Someone posted a beautiful detail photo of the C-pillar a little while back, but that's all I've caught of it for a very long while. Anyone?

We know Jesse, owner of Gypsy Rose, known him for awhile. Great guy. Ill see if i can round up some pics. The car is in a lay out in our 2nd Issue. It
was the San Diego Automotive museum, along with other Low Riders such as Twilight Zone.
Here is a pic of our second issue, and is what you should see on the news stands.

Yeah that Rivi is killer! Got any pics of your Impala?

TLMEditor.. I'm excited to see where you guys take this magazine. Like I said earlier, I enjoyed it but was hoping for more old school lowriders. If you check out our site (deadendmagazine.com) you can see that we cover lowriders also.. We're staying away from show cars and anything modern. Almost the same style you guys are covering. Our next online issue is going to have a sweet 37 Master Deluxe and an article from my brother's eye about cruising..

Gypsy rose-

I saw it Memorial weekend at the parkon my street (ha, ha for those of you that bitch about LA) That car rules. . those roses are so loose and hand painted but really nicely done . . I can't think of another car that is painted in such a purely artistic way.

Now murals are all "realistic" style airbrush. . gansters, money, nudes, etc. . . I dig that stuff too but gypsy rose is something else.

reynolds

still working on the site, but we will have back issues available. i posted the cover of the issue out, the one with the 59 impala.

Gypsy Rose has been done in two versions. The original was a 63, and the second was a 64. The original 63 was vandalized and pretty much destroyed by some f'd up haters. It is in our second issue in our lay out on the low rider exhibit in san diego

I looked at the mag the other day, i like reading lowrider magazine, i can appreciate any car that someone has put there heart and soul into, whether its a 70's monte carlo or an old bomb, i thought that there might be some older pics though, maybe there is, i just flicked through one issue, either way its great to have alternative to LRM, i'd love seeing the old pics - thats all i really need.

Who built the gypsy rose ?

was it a club, shop or just a bunch of guys [ with supernatural powers ] ?

the spreads real and you see the detail in the cars. I build cars many lowriders, trucks & now my first bomb 54 chevy belair, and when your appears in a magazine there nothing more important then all the small details.it sucks when you pick up mag and they forget to show the details murals, upholstery, dash, engine details etc.

Thanks for noticing. As i write this we are conducting a photo shoot. We started at 9am and still here at 9:20 and not nearly done. We are picky people and these guys building these cars we are shooting put A LOT of work and money into their cars. So why not let everyone see the detailing they put into the car and allow them to have something they can mount on the wall. Not just one page or two pages, but 6-8 pages they can frame. Our throw-back stories are an honor to write, and these old school riders have been giving a lot of positive feed back and wanting similar articles done. give love, so you can get love back.

as far as gypsy rose goes, it was built by Jesse Valadez and his brother Armando. Jesse's son owns the car now. The car was done by the talented Walt Prey at his shop, Walt's Studio. The guy back in the day did everthing from paint to murals. The guy is a bad ass pin striper and still doing his thing today.

the only way we can improve and keep people reading is to listen, good or bad. a few of us know the other editor as well, sorry to hear you dont get treated the way you should. 60 impala vert, sounds like something worth shooting Glad to hear about old schoolers still putting in work.

thanks ken, appreciate the support. Hope you liked the pictures of the "og style" 58s and the Rivi in the piece on Andy Lodi. Had some nice pictures of the old school set ups in his trunks. Yeah we need to get the site up, just waiting on a few things. I think people will enjoy the ideas we have coming up, a little something for everyone. Keeping it Real ALWAYS. how's the 64 coming along?

No to Tower Records, no go on Barnes and Noble (they're not helpful) and 7-11 doesn't exsist out here anymore. At least not in my area.

i posted what the cover looks like on post #51 on page 3. its a black 59 impala. if you go to Tower Records they will have it on the computer, we checked yesterday. they are/will be a distributor. Glad to see it at Fred Meyers, that is a real hard place to get into. Also try Winco Foods, Rite-Aid, Sav-On. Its not at every store they have, only in places they think they might sell. lots of mom and pop liqour stores seem to have them. Everyone seems to be buying multiple issues. sometimes people buy 4 or more. We like that they sell, but sucks that others dont get to see it and/or purchase it. I think you guys will enjoy slight changes we are doing.

our PO BOX is

we will always keep it traditional. there was much more diversity in cars back in "the day". now it is mostly gms, few lincolns mixed in. the staff enjoys a lot of different types of cars. here is a topic some might find interesting.

Deadend Magazine looks great. ChevyBombs.com looks real good too. Can never have enough good car sites with good content. Just got issue 3 yesterday. Has another Keeping it Traditional segment and for some of you bomb guys a 48 Fleetmaster. A few Impalas, i know, but hot cars and what people are building. As always, good photos we think you guys will enjoy.

Another link i wanted to pass along. I think people in North America, especially the US, take Riding for granted. Well maybe because there are lots of things to do other then cars, especially here in Cali. Here is a link of someone who came fromHolland just for the love of cars. Did more touring then most of us who live here:

Ted Well's house, every color METAL flake you could want. Plenty of Pesco's too. Nice ad in our next issue in that garage. The Adex ads would make nice posters for the garage.

Fixing our OC distribution problem. My brother lives right near you off Orangethorpe and Kraemer. I check all the places around there to. I know my buddy gets it at a liqour store near his house off Ball. I'll get the info from him and post it. Olds send me a message or an email: eric@traditionallowriding.com. Sometimes when deadlines are approaching we get caught up in production. Shoot us messages and emails when you can. We have had a couple Barnes and Nobles sightings, just a matter of time when you can find it. Unfortunately not everyone has access to 7-11, they will all be caring it by next issue.

www.traditionallowriding.com for subscriptions

subscribers get them about a week before everyone else. back issues can be ordered at the address posted in here along with the posted prices. our canadian subscribers dont get to much after people in the states do.

Barnes & Nobles has them. Went to the B&N in front of the Main Place mall in Orange and they had them. Might want to check the ones in your area. if they dont have it, ask for it because others do carry it.

Been following this thread and have been looking for the mag. It must not be getting down here. Can not find at my Barnes and Nobles ?

As with most of this thread, I love the traditional Lowriders. was born in LA and lived in various areas until the late 70s (including eagle rock, E. LA and other locals when I was little.) then moved to the foothills in Tujunga until the early 80's when we went to the NW. I can remember by uncle coming over to my parents place around about '77 with a 70 Riv on wires and juice. Burned a hole in my head.. My fav has to be the 66 riv and 59/62/63 Impalas

I have owned a set of 59 spinners for over 20 yrs in hopes of someday putting them on a set of large hub wires.. just have not had a car that would take the look (thou my 53 wagon could possible handle the look).

I will keep an eye out for the mag.

To say it the same, no idea how you came to that comparison. We actually have had 3 issues and have had females in all of them. We also do not have motorcycles, imports, new trucks, suvs, pages and pages of rim ads and do not make any inferences to race. you are entitled to your opinion, but didnt elaborate on what you found to be lame. Too big of photos? Not enough detailed shots? Paper grade need to be better? More girls? As far as getting better, every issue we improve on something.

The hottest girl was the one with the glasses...

Please get rid of the gangster look throughout the mag. It doesn't suit a good mag like yours.

feature less gold hoppers and bikes, nothing past 1975 (that Caddy didn't belong in the september issue)- more bombs, classic lows and hot women (:

The girl with the glasses was my favorite too. Heard she's looking for a good man

The bikes are a big part of low riding. Gets the kids involved and lets them have a spot light. I don't like it when older men are doing it; takes away from the kids. We shoot more classic cars then we do anything else. The newer cadillacs and lincolns are part of what is going on in the scene. Still rear wheel drive luxury cars. Those will end up being the new classics of the future IMHO. I hear your opinion though, i hear it a lot. I'm not a big hopping fan, but many are, so we include it. HOT WOMEN ALWAYS! Have to give different flavors when we can. The "gangster look", that is a hard concept to go over. Some owners just have that appearance, and we do try to include families in the lay out when we can. Good opinion, and thanks for saying what you do and dont like.

Pass the Tustin/Irvine Market Place all the time. Need to go look and see where we were placed. Again, good looking out and thanks for the feedback. We do talk about all things said.

I found the mag at the Barnes & Noble across the street from the Mainplace Mall (Santa Ana, CA)

The articles are interesting/informative and the pics are excellent.

I've been collecting LowRider Magazines since the 80's and stopped due to the amount of advertisment in the magazine and because there are more pages of rims than cars. When I buy mag's I want to see pic's and read stories not look at advertisement.

-SO-

I just bought the September issue of Traditional Lowriding and I must say I am very impressed. The magazine is printed on good quality paper for one and although I am not an expert, the pictures are clear and with the close-up shots, the detail you see is awesome. I have friends that are into LowRiding and have bought LRM for years and since then have decided to buy Traditional Lowriding because there are no SUV's or Imports. Keep up the good work and keep it REAL.

p.s. Add some bombitas when ever possible.

Hey Beaner, I live in East Los and all the low riders i know have given up on Low Rider Magazine. They are all about money and don't give a shit about the low riders anymore. They act like they do so we can keep on building them or else they wont have anything to shoot.... but they don't care! They put up this front with Low Riders Hall of Fame but they have disrespected so many of the original car clubs and thier members and now only play favorites to the ones (clubs) who bring the most members or who donate the most money to the magazine, either by advertising thier shop or by helping out with the show or just by being paid off....Screw that! We call it...Low Rider Catalog.....Not Low Rider Magazine.

I finally found a place selling the mag... and have picked up the last 2 issues (#2 and #3 I believe) and have thoroughly enjoyed both. I look forward to picking up future issues.

I agree with SHORTDOG LRM is all about the money.Maybe if the editor would stop smoking he would be more down to earth and understand the true lowriding.
