Projects East Coast 1934 Ford 3w Coupe Build

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Nicks Hot Rod Garage, Aug 9, 2011.

  1. Its been one of my dream cars, Model 40 3 window Coupe, Channeled and un-chopped. I stumbled into this fellow and couldn't leave it. My Plan is Keep it Super Simple! And Get it Running as quick as possible.

Here's what I know about it...

    • 1934 Ford 3w Coupe
    • Old aluminum Minnesota vin plate on the firewall
    • Channeled 5"
    • Lincoln Zephyr Rear Axle, Spring and Brakes
    • Lincoln Zephyr Front Axle, Spring and Brakes
    • 1956-1957 Chevy 265 without Power Pack Heads
    • Aluminum plate trans adapter
    • Ford 1939 top shift box
    • Hydraulic Slave Cylinder
    • 1940 Ford Brake Master Cylinders for both brakes and clutch
    • 1932 Ford Grille and Radiator

    Here's a few Pix:

    I like that!

Shame it looks like someone's torched through the torque tube and driveshaft, but a suitable replacement Ford one shouldn't be hard to find? Or was that the start of someone "adjusting" the LZ one to fit?

  17. Thanks Everyone for the "Nice Car" comments!

Chris, I'll PM you my phone # I'll take one of those boxes please.

I don't have much, just what I listed in the first post....

It looks like Tuffy's younger brother... ha ha !

Your On!! Yes the cross member is a little strange, I cut it out with the plasma today and I cleaned up some other spots. I'm planning on running the Zephyr rear, I have a '40 torque tube and a '40 drive shaft, I'll take it all apart tomorrow and see if the parts will interchange.

I believe this was a driver at one time, it got parked and them some torch happy ebay'r got a-hold of it.....

Yes, so here's a little more history.. Apparently my seller got it off of ebay sometime ago. The ebay seller had the body listed around X-Mas time and couldn't get it sold. He had taken the car apart via a torch....

    • Blew through the torque tube bearing and drive shaft (its only 6 bolts?)

    • Blew the front 1"x1/2" shock brackets
    • Blew the front radius rod brackets off
    • Blew off some other gussets on the frame too
    • Cut the body off the frame
So my seller asked if the guy had a anything else to go with the car, well YEA! A pile of parts and a frame.... DOH! My seller offered to buy the car if he could get it rolling so it could be transported across the country.

So said ebay seller, threw his blown apart car back together with a welder!

There you have it more history!

I spent my time cleaning up the frame with the grinder & plasma and then dropped it off at the blast shop. I also called Eric at Riley Automotive and ordered some parts for the front end, I hope to have it all by the weekend so I can get it on wheels.

I also took the trans apart, it had water & little oil in it. However I think some of it will be salvageable. Looks to be a '39 box.

  21. I picked up several boxes of parts from Riley Auto Parts, Eric treated me very well. I'm home mocking up the front end, tomorrow I hope to have the front done and start working on the rear Sunday. I love clean metal!

  23. I've never owned an "OCC" drill bit, and after an article in R&C (I think), I bought one and some smooth flange nuts, turned out pretty good, the bit gave out after 19 holes (w/no lube), I didn't want to soak my clean frame with oil.

I worked on the crossmember & got all tacked together.

My friend Scott dropped by to check out the car, he offered a suggestion for the brakes, a stock '34 pedal set (rather then the dual 40's & swing pedals on the firewall). I just happened to have a set hanging on a rafter.

I need to research mc mounting ideas for this setup.

    I'm going back for more!

What do you mean by an "old Minnesota VIN plate"? Was it an assigned number from MN from back in the day?

  26. Yea, an aluminum tag stamped MINN 66-4226 on the firewall. Who knows when they did that? 70's 60's 50's?
