It's that time again. There's a new update on the server:

    http://www.target550.com/gallery/33_wheel_%20enclosures_ducting_and_instrument_panel/index.html

Some of the items touched on in this update include the rear wheel enclosures:

and the plenum and ducting between the blower and intake manifold:

finally, the instrument panel got a bit of milling to fit it to the shape of the body panels.

While all of Freud's shots are great, I found those that show the ducting and plenum between the blower and intake manifold to be an indication that the light at the end of the tunnel is getting closer and brighter.

    Enjoy,

Well, another week has gone by and more progress made on the liner.

Dave Jeffers is machining the plenum for one of the motors.

Here the chute tubes are mounted on the new attachment plate.

A friction shock is used to damp the canopy's movement when opening.

    There are http://www.target550.com/gallery/34_%20induction_system_chute_tubes_and_canopy_shock_absorber/index.htmlmore photos here:

With Dave and Jason working with Jim Hume, the pace is picking up. There really IS a light at the end of the tunnel.

It's update time again and Freud has provided us with a very kool section (largest one so far) that shows how some of the body panels were fabricated at Steve's Auto Restoration in Portland, Or:

    http://www.target550.com/gallery/35...on_panel_fabricating_and_employees/index.html

I'm attaching a coupla sample shots from today's update...and then I gotta catch up on some sleep.

Marlo, Jim, Freud and all the other team members would like to thank all of those who've taken an interest in this project. It seems to me that it's gathering speed like a snowball rolling downhill. As we've said before, there's a light at the end of the tunnel (and it's not a freight train.)

Well, I almost made the post on Friday. I guess my bonus for meeting the deadline is out the window. But the update's there and it shows some of the previously completed components coming together.

It shows the forward firewall being fit along with the fuel and water tanks which are all stainless and continue the process of crafting a piece of fine art that's intended to bump the current Land Speed record (415.896) by over 100 mph. Boggles the mind. I try to imagine being at the 5 mile mark on the salt and shooting the car as it sails by at over 500 mph...and I just can't wrap my head around it. Last year I shot the BUB 7 motorcycle liner as it sailed past me at around 370 mph. It blew my mind that I got background panning blur with a shutter speed of 1/1000th:
    http://www.chevyasylum.com/lsr/bsf2009/shootout/therest/BUB/Shootout_09_20_jpg.html

But I digress. Here are a coupla examples of the craftsmanship, not to mention the progress on the liner.

    More next week.

    Here's another update:
    http://www.target550.com/gallery/40_rats_eye_too/index.html

These are shots I made the last time I visited the shop. They're mainly of welding details. Sounds boring as hell. But I found 'em to be fascinating as far as the quality of work and the consistency of the beads are concerned.

The attached photo shows a fuel tank made from stainless. It's a frikkin work of art. Otta be in the Museum of Fine Art. It's for a dragster, not the liner but it was there on the bench and it kinda screamed at my camera to photograph it.

The last photo in the series shows the original plans for the liner's frame. Speakin of frame, that's what they did with the plan. It's in a frame and hung on the wall. Art is where ya find it.

    And one more.

This page has links to 3 YouTube interviews with Jim Hume, the master builder/designer/craftsman responsible for the liner's construction.

There's some real interesting stuff there. Like the answer to the question, "why are there no Dzuz fasteners?"

    Hope you enjoy 'em.

Friday update time for the Target 550 build diary. Doc Freud has provided us with some "potpourri" in the form of photos covering several different areas of the car.

This is the first image in the group and it shows Jim Hume standing by a group of body panels. They've been painted inside and given some primer where the rivets will be placed.

    Check it out.

Here we go again. This week's post shows the oil pan access panels, the body skin assembly and a security concern. Well, the head of security is takin a bribe, more or less.

Every time I add a group of photos, I see something else that blows my mind. In this one, it's the method of fastening and bonding the body skin to its substructure:

Another Friday, another set of photos, 20 this time. They show some...well, as Frank sez, incredible doesn't begin to describe what's going on.

This is a part of what I posted on www.landracing.com:

Case in point: one of the sections of this week's post show bearing surface pillow blocks and bearing inserts (made from Delrin or Teflon or some self-lubricating, high temperature-resistant plastic) for the rods that fasten and release the catches for the body panels. I've attached one of the photos from the web site and Freud may post a couple more. These blocks and inserts are (once again) works of art and something I never would have thought of doing. I asked where the oil lines and dry sump tank were gonna be. Well, that's a little over the top but when ya see this you might ask yerself the same thing...any system with matched blocks and bearing surface inserts deserves a full pressure oiling system, right?

And then there's the little catches for the retainer bolts on the wheel enclosures...and on and on...

Anyway, just more great stuff from Hume's shop...with a coupla hints and more good stuff to come.

This week's update shows a new press vehicle being delivered to the press representative, Doc Freud:

Maybe he was expecting something other than my Model A rat (traditional whatever...):

And since a rat (this one) wrote the line copy...well, his typing is better than his hand (paw?) writing.

We had a TON of fun doing this. Marlo and I have been planning a surprise for Freud since April. We finally pulled it off and all arrived at the same place at the same time. For those who know Freud (Glen Freudenberger) you might know that he's a somewhat emotional guy. When he saw what we (along with Dickey Milne, the team's gear and tire specialist) had cooked up he just came unglued. Marlo Treit is really the chief cooker...I just happened to have this Model A thing in my garage and...

After the little surprise we all headed to Jim Hume's shop to check out the construction of the liner. More progress is being made, but that'll be the subject of another update.

As of now, the plan is to have Rufus, the press truck, at Salt Talks. That's the Speed WeeklSunday night gathering at the "Bend in the Road" put on by Jon and Nancy Wennerberg (not to mention Cathy Shannon who cooks everything that isn't nailed down, no matter which way the wind is blowing.)

There are rumors that the liner might show up at World of Speed in September...for show and tell. But that's not real set in stone yet.

In any case, progress is being made, there's a light at the end of the tunnel and it's getting brighter...and it's not a freight train. There will be some new progress reports coming soon that cover areas that haven't (up until this week) been addressed.

Another Friday, another update. This shows the innards from stem to stern. It's kinda interesting to see how it all fits together. 4wd, two Keith Black 510 inch Hemis with Whipple superchargers, 2 B&J 4-speed planetary transmissions and a pair of highly-modified quick-change rear ends. We're gonna break the 500 mph barrier. No piston engined, wheel-driven car has ever done that. 450 is about the fastest one has run, but the driver of that one had to back out of the throttle cuz he was getting too much wheelspin!

This series gives a pretty good look at that's "under the covers" and shows the way it all fits together.

I need sleep...a big car show photo shoot plus this update...yada, yada...I'm wore out.

Well, I missed the Friday update, but here it is late on Saturday.

It shows the driver, Les Davenport getting fitted in the cockpit: seat belt mounting points, seat insert, etc. Also some work in locating the shifter module and the front torque tube.
    http://www.target550.com/gallery/48_several_different_areas_of_work/index.html

I'm in the middle of some photo coverage of an ALMS race so I gotta split.

    Njoy.

Don't worry about the missed Friday Ray, the updates are good viewing what ever time you get 'em posted. Don't know how you get done what you do with only 24/7 in a week. All your effort is really appreciated here.

One more Friday, one more Target 550 update. The first photo alone is worth the price of admission. It shows the
engine-turned instrument panel and explains many of the controls. Some
panel riveting work is shown and there are some photos of anodizing work
done by Production Plating, Inc, in Mukilteo, Wa. Real nice... work. But
my favorite is still the instrument panel. As Freud wrote, that
prepares it for the concours d'elegance.

@ed: Thanks for the kind words. I've found that working for a workaholic boss is much harder than working for one who only expects 40 hours in a week. Self-employment has its down sides. But I wouldn't change it fer nuttin. It's the best life I've ever lived.

Somehow I neglected to post about last week's update. So I'll cover 2 at once. Last week was kind of a "catch up" on several different things that hadn't been covered...like some re-design of the canopy opening system, some work on the cowl and the underbody tire fairings.
    http://www.target550.com/gallery/50_overlooked_items_front_engine_plate_and_guests/index.html

This week's update is along the same lines, but covers some work on the instrument panel, steering wheel with its control buttons, body skins and more.
    http://www.target550.com/gallery/51_many_different_areas_of_progress/index.html

Things are gonna slow down a bit as salt flats season is upon us, but we'll do what we can to keep the coverage going.

I'll be on the salt starting on August 9th to do photo coverage of the course setup and then the Speed Week competition. I was gonna just stay in my Burb like I've done for the last few years, but 2 weeks of that didn't seem very appealing. So now I'll be setting up "Camp Rat" with tent and generator up above the "Bend in the Road" where things is a little quieter and old farts like me can get some sleep at night.

Jon Wennerberg (Seldom Seen Slim) and I will be doing "live and direct forumcasts" on landracing.com with photos and commentary posted via cellular modems...or 3G connection, if my Android phone will remain stable enough to tether my laptop. We'll see...but there will definitely be coverage during all 5 events (assuming that Mother Nature smiles upon us.)

Here we go again. Today's update focuses on the tail skin pieces and the small part of the skin that joins the tail with the center section of the body. It's a precision-fit piece complicated by the need to allow the Speed Brake to be deployed through slots in it.

There's also some info on the dry sump scavenge pumps. Some pretty kool stuff. To me, the tail section skin construction is just fascinating.

Updates may be kinda slim during LSR season on the salt, but we'll do our best.

We have a mid-week update to the Target 550 web site. It's entitled, "A Glimpse of Bonneville." I feel flattered that the distinguished press relations specialist chose to use a lot of my photos. It's a different kind of update, but I think you'll enjoy it...if for no other reason than to see some very different photos. I hope ya like 'em.

    Here's one of 'em.

Being Friday, we have the weekly Target 500 update. For those who aren't familiar with this, Target 550 is a Land Speed Racing project. Marlo Treit is having Jim Hume (and a coupla others) build a streamliner with the goal of becoming the fastest piston-engined, wheel-driven car ever...by a very large margin. The number 550 describes the target speed. That's just about 135mph faster than the current record. It's a long term project and there are still a lot of things that need to be completed. But it's being done by some artists who use metal instead of paint or other media. Each piece of the liner is a work of art in its own right.

This week's update includes the steering wheel, scavenge pump, front drive hub and a tribute to Prairie, the former head of security.

While I was out frolicking on the salt flats, Doc Freud was busy shooting new photos that show the progress of the Target 500 Streamliner.

This week's update is entitled, "The The Aluminum Jewel Box and Accessories." The "jewel box" refers to the control cluster in the center of the steering wheel, much simplified from a previous version. More fine art coming together to set the ultimate wheel-driven, piston-engined Land Speed Record.
