History 1955 Chevy Gasser ... White Lightnin

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Searcher, Nov 2, 2008.

  1. O.K. if you love 55 chevy gassers like I do you may not want to look at this.

I sold this straight axel car soon after this picture was taken in 1997. A guy by the name of Pete (last name witheld) from Reno purchased it. Shortly thereafter he lost control on a back road and rolled it over and over. He was badly injured and almost died. The roll bar saved his bacon.

    Wouldn't it though......

I can picture it in some garage or warehouse all covered up with junk... but with super nice patina :D
    That would be too cool.

What a bitchin history blast, reminds of the ol 1950's days in Grand Island, Ne., our car club the C-Dans were very active drag racers, sharing motors and other parts all around. Creams on the H.A.M.B. has some great pix in his profile of those racing times., check em out. Great stuff dudes. ~sololobo~

Got my version from my buddy sign painter yesterday. I think he nailed my vision of what the Florida "White Lightnin" would look like.

    I've been Gone too long.....

That's too Cool ... I'll call my Buddy who owned this 55 for awhile and tell him it's been recreated in Florida.

By the way, here's an old T he dug up awhile back from a trip to the drags.

M&R was the initials of the owners, Richard (Booty) Mark and Donnie Ross, Their shop was on Temple Street, LA. Both were great guys. I last saw Booty at Eric Averil's funeral many years ago. He still may be in business in Glendale.

Just happened upon this thread while searching for something else. What a great story and "Killer 55 Chevy Gasser". Nice to see the original builder(Fogger ..beautifull 3W by the way!) fill in all the details on the car. I will post this link on the 55 Chevy Gasser Owners wanted thread. :)

Why the fuck would you post this in this thread? Makes no sense? Great looking car. Here is to hoping that the car shows its face one day.

    Hey Fogger,
Does the name Jim Hendricks ring a bell? He raced a 55 "White Lightning" in the 60's and I believe it had a BBC w/ 4 speed. I'll ask him tomorrow if he remembers when, where and who he bought the car from. I'll also see if he has any pictures. Vic

Found out that my friend may've owned this car and ran it at Lion's with a tunnel rammed 427 w/ 4 speed in the 60's. Everything he described including setback engine and doghouse is the same. He said when he got it, it was without an engine and trans but had an Olds/Pontiac rearend. It probably had a SBC before he got it because he had to make a few mods for clearance. His best time was an 11.0. I'll get some pix from him and post them later. He thought about possibly cloning that car sometime.
