Kiss KCIR and Kansas City Drag Strip Good-Bye?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Yutan Flash, Nov 2, 2011.

  1. Just read a story on the Kansas City Star website that Kansas City Int'l Raceway owners may be selling the drag strip to the city so that it can be "turned" into a park. Looks like another homeowners' association and the uppity folks that felt they just had to buy a house next to an active motorsports facility are going to get their way. How sad...another facility lost.

"Kansas City has taken a preliminary step toward buying the Kansas City International Drag Strip in the Little Blue Valley so it can be converted into a park.
The city council’s Planning and Zoning Committee today authorized the park board to purchase the 93-acre property at 82nd Street and Noland Road from NP3 Racing LLC for an undisclosed price. The measure goes to the full Council Thursday for approval."

  2. A "park"...yeah, right, it'll be 145 houses, built five feet apart.

Running into that down here in Tulsa. Tulsa Raceway Park sold to the big Rock Quarry. >=(. Rumor has it there may still be a 3yr lease to keep the races going, but it's just a matter of time before its gone too.

    Thanks,

    Councilwoman Cindy Circo:
Taking jobs and tax dollars away and replacing them with a "park" that COSTS taxpayer's dollars and is desired only by land investors poised to make big bucks when the dragstrip is gone? Hmmmmmm. Smaks of corruption doesn't it?

Here she is Thursday lying to the council saying it was not condemned.

........and on the other side of Missouri (Illinois actually) you've lost Gateway International Raceway. ( http://www.gatewayraceway.com/ ) ...but another is being built 60 or 70 miles NW of St. Louis off I-70? To far for the KC crowd and the St. Louis area has a great facility but can't support it. Just wondering what's next?

What the hell?? I thought all of the states and municipalities were over budget and broke. How can they justify something like this in today's economy???

There is a race at 'Gateway' on Sept. 28-30th it's not entirely closed. It is under new management however.

It sucks seeing a track close especially one like KCIR. I always had a great time whenever I was there. Always ran great too. Just another example of the government working for the people...

Wow another park what a lovely place to drop off the kids while dad heads next door for a 12pack and a blow job at the whorehouse on the corner. They have been racing there since 1967 and people kept building around it knowing full well about the noise and traffic. The last straw however was when our esteemed state senator and local banker obtained property nearby. The word is they sold with the understanding they would help them re-locate (yea good luck with that). At least she will be able to enjoy the place next year after we the people kick her fat fucking ass out of office!!

  21. "Oh Buffy, those greasy poor hoodlums with thier old rattle trap cars are at it AGAIN. I just wish they had enough money to get their mufflers fixed."

This has been a fight for a long time. The leader of the charge (SK) is a real A$$ and thinks ( well he knows) his money is big in KC.
This is a major city and we don't have a Drag strip? Topeka is along way away.
Maybe if they would of put a casino next to it , it would of lived.

    I am not a happy camper:mad:

Montgomery is about 160 miles from the Eastern edge of KC. That's about 20 miles farther than Mokan Dragway.

I'm just guessing about these numbers, but I'd bet that shoots down at least 80 percent of the once regulars at the KCIR weekend races and 98 percent of the test and tuners that made Wednesday night a regular thing for dialing in their rides.

This is just heartbreaking news for the racers, tuners, machine shops, car and engine-builders, fans and families here in KC!

And utter political bullshit being played out in city hall and no doubt, under the table.

Why? Why? Do so many people hate car culture people?

    Is it the noise?

I lived four miles from Arrowhead/Royals stadium for 10 years back in the 1980s and 90s and could always plainly hear the cheering, fireworks and musical concerts that thrilled people at those locations and never once thought ill of those having a great time. And I guarantee that there were 50 times the amount of homes (as compared to the sparsely populated valley that KCIR is located) in the vicinity of those stadiums that could hear the same thing I was hearing. I've never heard a single complaint about the noise.

Is it the people? Those "dirty" low-life gearheads "they" think we are?

You know, I'd rather my son be hanging out with the drag racing crowd at KCIR vs the Drunken Rowdy TAILGATERS in Arrowhead's parking lot ANY DAY!!!!

I'm NOT threatening - I'm just being realistic when I say:

"Lordy, there's gonna be a racing in tha streets up in KC!"

Perhaps that's what the city is hoping for... The revenue from the citations they know they will be giving out may exceed the taxes gleaned from the legal racing and side businesses. Never mind it will certainly be at the expense of flesh and blood.

It's all about 3 rich women who own land next to, or near the track who either want to develop, or sell their property, and city council woman Cindy Circo who lives in those 3 women's purse's.

  27. This shit came up a few years back as well if I remember right. Don't think it was for a park, but for development (some houty-touties didn't like the noise). KCIR was our High School drag Strip, lots of good times, and saw lots of the big names back in the day.

Hopefully (wishfull thinking) this attempt will go south and become a memory too.

  28. "Some people are warning that the expected sale of the Kansas City International Raceway could lead to a rise in illegal street racing" - it's just pure coincidence that a new store called "Starter Flags Are Us" is getting ready to do a booming business.

    Save Kansas City International Raceway

    Statement from Rob Park: (11/08/2011)

Throughout history KCIR has had its trials and tribulations that we have all had to endure and this chapter is no different. To all of the loyal fans and racers I can’t thank you enough for all your support. I am sorry I have not communicated on a broad spectrum earlier but by a contractual obligation and advice of our attorney we were asked to refrain from any public s...tatements for the time being. I have since realized with all of the uncertainty it is vitally important that everyone know our side of the story, or at least as much as we are allowed to share at this time. I assure you it will be fully disclosed in time.
The entire story is too lengthy to tell in detail but I will attempt to give you the Cliff’s notes version. After we sold the track in 2008, the owner at that time offered to sell KCIR to the city for a park (which was necessary to complete the housing development across the road) and planned to build a new motorsports facility in conjunction with a road course up by the airport. As we all know those plans took a dramatic halt.
After learning the plans a group of investors had for the property, that didn’t include a drag strip, I set out on a mission to help save the track. With family life as my priority (wife and four kids) I knew I didn’t have the time available to put forth towards the track, as an owner, that it needed. Luckily Chris was in a position that he was willing to help even knowing the uncertainties surrounded by the current situation. I can assure you, without Chris we never would have even got this far.
Shortly after the transition I was approached by neighborhood and city officials to discuss the future of the track in its current location. I was asked to develop a proposal for what I felt would be a viable motorsports entity that would be located within Kansas City and would be a draw for the city. With the aid of Dan Porrevechio (yes he actually has been helping ) we developed a very comprehensive plan to relocate the track and develop a motorsports business that would be a “win” for everyone involved. As time went by we needed an answer and gave the city a deadline, the deadline approached and they asked for a week extension (which we granted) at the end of the week is when we received our first letter. You have all seen that one. Since that time, not knowing exactly what was going to happen, we have spent a considerable amount of time and money consulting with our attorneys looking for any other options and none were available. To this date no one has came to us with any options. The ability to exercise eminent domain through the use of condemnation is a very powerful and it is very expensive to the land owner(s). We have been given a very loud and clear message we are not wanted here. If you read between the lines of what is being said publicly you can see the play on words and how they are trying to use them to their advantage.
Our intentions never have been or will be to eliminate drag racing in Kansas City. Remember how I make my living. Anyone that actually knows me knows better. I do have a desire to help with a new track that we could all enjoy with much fewer restrictions in an area that we are welcome. We are continuing discussions to try to find a feasible solution for all racers, fans and owners.
Again, I can’t thank all of you supporters enough for what you are trying to do.
    Rob Park
