I am building a 327 for my 55 chevy and I wanna run a Duntov 30/30 camshaft. I see the lift is .455 and the duration is .253 at .50 with a 114 degree lobe center... Has anyone run this cam on the street? Can someone give me some info on how it performs? I am running a Muncie 4 speed and a 3.55 rear. I would think with the duration that it wouldnt start howling till the rpms got up with with the lobe center at 114 I would think that would help. Thanks much.

I've used these cams (097) in various 283-292-301 combinations. You may need a little more gear. 3:70 to 4:11. I would use the small chamber 461 heads on your 327. Get a set of the Z/28 valve springs too. It has a really Boss idle. You'll like it.

Before this gets any further, the "097" camshaft that is commonly known as a "Duntov" was used in hipo sbcs from 1957-63, and is NOT the same as the "30-30" cam that replaced it, and was used from 1964-69. The "30-30" definitely has a soggier bottom end than the "097", and needs lots of gear and, preferrably, a four speed. Put it in a heavy car with an automatic, and VW bugs will beat you off the line.

Everything has to work together. If you want that cam, you will need some compression, good heads with big valves, good valve springs, a good intake and the proper size carb for the cubic inch size, and a free flowing exhaust. Think about a T500 five speed, low should be just a little lower, and five will be for Interstate cruising.

Heathen & Ole Don hit it on the head.
My Dad gave me a N.O.S. Duntov 30/30 for my '69 'Vette 350 mill in '72, (eng. had 17k miles) and I put it in my '55 F100, aluminum powerglide trans, 3.90 Dana rear.
Installed an Edelbrock performer intake, Carter Thermoquad, and tube headers with 2.5" headpipes and 40" glasspacks.
Initial performance was below expectations, but after a few miles (and a coupla beers) I revved it up to 3500 RPM in low range, drove deep into a corner, and pitched it sideways and it pulled thru the turn like a sprint car.
700 RPM idle speed, anywhere off-idle and it accelerated like a sick 283. Get it up past 2500 and it got 'anxious', then in the 3K range it got into "Hang on" mode.
Fun at RPM, but it was my shop truck. The 350 wasn't a 'comfortable screamer' like a 327, but it definitely had 'presence'...
I replaced it with a Cal Cams RV grind my pal Chico ground for me, with 112 degree lobe centers. Much more useable, Bonneville round trips in mid-'80s, Old Time Drags at Baylands, and even a time slip at 13.70 at 109 MPH, with mufflers and street tires! (350 turbo tranny & 3.70s)
(Same strip, uncorked with 30/30 cam previously made 14.20s at 100 MPH.)

The previous post are all correct. I would like to add that this cam does like a little more compression than what would come in a crate motor and it works best with a 4Spd transmisson and a single plane intake manifold. I also agree with the person that mentioned you will like the idle.

Im running flat tops...going to deck the block so the pistons are 0.00 in the hole and probably plane the heads...2.02 valves on the 461 heads...I am running old fenton black widow headers and i am running an old OFFY single 4 barrel and a 600 Holley.

I'll agree with Don, everything in the engine has to be set up to work together. Back in the 60's, all of the performance engines that came from Chevrolet with solid lifter cams had at least 11/1 compression. It's hard to get gas with enough octane to run one with that much compression on the street now. For the best performance and the sound you want, the best thing you can do is call one of the aftermarket cam manufacturers and get their recommendations.

One other point. A good running 327 in a street driven 55 would probably be a 15 or 16 second car. 11 second et's weren't as easy to come by as everyone seems to remember.

Mine had a C4B, with a 3310 Holley, but was running 4:88's. I used it for commuting to work on 101 for a while. Lots of fun.

I would watch how you use that term "VW"

Ive spanked a camero (350) and a El Camino (396) with my VW in a street race and all I have is a healthy 1776 cc motor that put out around 100hp. There are a hand full of VWs out there that regularly run 11's in full street trim and interior. So be ware!!

Man,look at the comp cams extreme 4x4 or lunati voodoo cams for torque you'll be happy you did.

  13. They work fine on the street. A mild lope and good wide powerband.

Only down side I see with them is they are a splid lifter cam and you need to adjust valve lash once in a while. Well that and they are a little noisey because they are a solid lifter cam. As if that's a down side on a hot rod.

They were a street cam from the factory.

    Damn, thats funny!

Unless your hooked on the solid lift, you might consider the L79 hyd cam. Thats if ya want to stick to a vintage GM grind VS the latest and greatest technology. More versatile and street friendly, but still a nice hot rod idle.

I recall this to be the cam the 365 and 375HP Corvettes used. Lots of valve train noise cause they were supposed to be set at .030 on both the intakes and exhaust; set on a hot engine. I think the 097 Duntov cam had .012 intake lash and .018 on the exhaust. Everyone is right; a little slow off the line.

I suggest calling the CAMSHAFT manufactuer of your choice and tell them what your combination is. Tell them how much you car weighs and the rear gear and the rear tire diameter.

Then, let them tell you which camshaft is BEST ...

They will taylor one for one ... instead of a generic 30/30 that is now 40 years old ... technlogy wise.

    :D

The .030"-.030" cam was also used on the '67-'69 chevy 302 motors.. I think a 5-speed trans with a 3.35 first gear ratio would wake up the low end compared to the 2.20 first gear from the Muncie 4-speed...

I have never run or heard one run but Comp cams makes a Nostalgia plus cam part number N+30-30H that is an hydraulic cam that is supposed to out perform the old 30-30 and still have the wicked exhaust note.

I have always had good luck with 327-350 hp cam. The Duntov cam if it is the Corvette Fuel Injection cam is good for hi rpms but is low on torque. In the vettes it work best with a 411 axle. They would turn 7000 from the factory in the Fuel injection vettes.

I'm still building cars with 40 year old technology !?!?

  23. The p.o. of my '56 says he built the 355 with the 30-30 cam (and that is the only cam he uses). The car has worn out camel hump heads, smallish rams horn manifolds, a TH400 w/ 'stiff' converter and a 3.55 rear gear going through 26" tall tires. It's really soggy on the low end, but on the hwy you know when you've gotten to 3000 rpm's, cuz it just flat flies after that. I've never gotten the idle and vacuum sorted out properly so for in town driving it's not much fun - lot's of feathering the throttle to get going, probably partially carb related. When time permits, I'm gonna change out the carb, intake, heads and cam.

  24. I had a 65 Vette 375 fuel injected 30-30 cam valves set at .028 advanced cam 3 degrees , recurved dist. side pipes, close ratio 4-speed and 4:56 rear. Could wind it up to 8 grand easily.

Back in the 60's I ran a 301 in my '57 Chevy. I built it with the 30-30 cam, 350 HP 327 intake and carb, 11.5:1 Jahns pistons and a set of Hooker headers. With 4.88 gears and close ratio Muncie it would run 11.99 at 114.40MPH like clockwork. It made the most beautiful music 3500 to 7800 RPM.

And yes, it was gutless below 3000RPM.

While it was a great cam and this site is all about tradition, unless you have a bunch of cardboard oil cans and insist on re-ringing every 50K 'cause cast iron is the only way, take advantage of a modern grind.

We used to run a hyd cam that was suppose to be close to the 30 / 30--we called it a "151"--was Chevy cam--151 was the last three numbers of the part #--anybody remember this?

I ran one in a 302 and a 327. Idled around 900, didn't come in until about 4k. They never stop pulling though. I had a 64 belair with the 327, a glide with a 4k stall, and 4.10's. I used to stoplight 5.0 mustangs all the time. I ran in the left lane, they would get me off the line every time (reference soggy bottom end from above). I never shifted off the tach, just left it in low until I pulled even with them, because it never ran out of breath. I had shorty pipes on it, and the driver would be cringing like he was going to be eating pistons in a moment. Evidently 8600 rpm in the face is a little scary! Then I'd shift to hi, and pull away. I kept a bag of pushrods and rocker arms in the trunk, as I'd shove one through the other quite often. I probably left a lot of horsepower on the table, but what fun.
